LETTER TO SHAREHOLDERSDear Fellow Shareholders,Marking the 20th anniversary since our founding, 2009 was a very successful yearfor Chesapeake, even though average natural gas prices fell 56% in 2009compared to 2008: Average daily natural gas and oil productionincreased 8% from 2.3 billion cubic feet ofnatural gas equivalent (bcfe) in 2008 to 2.5bcfe in 2009;Aubrey K. McClendon,Co-Founder, Chairmanand Chief Executive Officer Proved natural gas and oil reserves increased18% in 2009, from 12.1 trillion cubic feet ofnatural gas equivalent (tcfe) to 14.3 tcfe; Reserve replacement for the year reached 343%at a drilling and net acquisition cost of only$0.74 per thousand cubic feet of natural gasequivalent (mcfe) (1) ; Cash hedging gains were $2.3 billion; Our stock price increased 60% in 2009, from$16.17 to $25.88; Revenues totaled $7.7 billion; Adjusted ebitda (2) was $4.4 billion; Operating cash flow (2) totaled $4.3 billion; and Adjusted earnings per fully diluted share (2)were $2.55.HAYNESVILLE SHALE DRILLING RIG Shreveport, LouisianaTHE PAST AS PROLOGUEIn May 1989, I co-founded Chesapeake to takeadvantage of a newly developed technology calledhorizontal drilling. At the time, my business partnerTom Ward and I were two self-employed landmenworking together to develop prospects for othercompanies to drill. These prospects were located insouthern Oklahoma and in South Texas where we assembledlarge land positions that were underlain byfractured carbonates — reservoirs which were not atthe time considered economic to develop using conventionalvertical drilling technologies.Convinced the conventional wisdom aboutthese formations was wrong, we started developingthe prospects ourselves using horizontal drilling. We didn’t know it then, but those prospects todaywould be called unconventional reservoirs (so-calledbecause they are generally nonproductive without4 CHESAPEAKE ENERGY CORPORATION

the implementation of advanced horizontal drillingand fracture stimulation technologies). To us, it wassimply a very logical way to combine a new technologywith our land acquisition skills to crack the codefor economically developing large scale projects thatcould be company-makers.Ironically, that is precisely what Chesapeake doestoday — uses its cutting-edge technological capabilitiesand industry-leading land acquisition skillsto develop new unconventional reservoirs that haverecently become some of the largest, most active andmost highly valued natural gas development projectsin the world. While I am proud of our humble beginnings, I amalso proud that during its 20-year existence, Chesapeakehas built an unparalleled asset portfolio, anindustry-leading technological position and a deepsense of environmental stewardship to become thenation’s second-largest natural gas producer, mostactive driller of new wells and most vocal proponentof natural gas as the best way to fuel America’s cleanenergy future.OUR POWERFUL ASSETSWhat will drive Chesapeake’s strong growth in thefuture? It will be our industry-leading position in the“Big 6” major natural gas shale plays in the U.S. — theBarnett, Fayetteville, Haynesville, Marcellus, Bossierand Eagle Ford shales — plus our emerging unconventionaloil plays. The Big 6 shale plays form the foundationof the American natural gas shale revolution andthey will create substantial value for Chesapeake’sshareholders for decades to come. And because thosekey shale plays are dominated by only 15 or so publiccompanies, we believe this group of shale pioneerswill emerge as the industry’s biggest winnersin the years ahead. Chesapeake’s Top 2 positionin five of the Big 6 shale plays (with no othercompany having more than one Top 2 position)should ensure that Chesapeake will emerge asthe biggest winner of all from the Big 6 shaleland rush.significance of the play until early 2004. We thenmade our first two property acquisitions in JohnsonCounty and set our sights on what we called the“doughnut hole” — Tarrant County, the home of FortWorth and more than 60 other municipalities. Most in the industry knew Tarrant County layabove the best Barnett rock in the entire play. What was unclear was how to develop it beneatha metropolitan area of almost two million people. After analyzing the challenges and opportunitiesof urban and suburban drilling, we concludedthat while most of our competitors would not wantto deal with these complexities, Chesapeake’soperational and land acquisition skills would beespecially well suited for successful urban developmentin the Barnett.Consequently, in 2005 we began leasing in earnestin Tarrant County, and today we own approximately200,000 leases, on which we estimate we could drillup to 2,400 future net wells in addition to our 1,100 netwells currently producing. Our most exciting development in the BarnettShale during 2009 was the signing of our fourth naturalgas shale joint venture agreement. This agreement closed in January 2010and involved Chesapeake selling 25% ofits assets in the Barnett to Paris-basedTotal, S.A., the world’s fifth-largestoil company. Total paid $2.25 billionin cash and drilling carries for its25% stake in the Barnett and we areextremely proud to welcome Total asone of our four highly valued joint venturepartners.Hard work, high-tech drillingrigs and gas-laden shale providea formula for success.Employees of Nomac Drilling,a Chesapeake subsidiary, operate the largest rig fleet inthe exploration and productionindustry as they drill fornatural gas in America’s Big 6shale plays.BARNETT SHALEDiscovered in the 1990s, the Barnett is thegranddaddy of all shale plays. Chesapeakeacquired its first assets in the Barnett in 2001,but did not fully appreciate the potentialLETTER TO SHAREHOLDERS 5

The Haynesville Shale in Northwest Louisiana and East Texasis the shale play of which we are most proud because it wasdiscovered by Chesapeake’s own geoscientists and engineers.GRANITE WASHHigh-volume natural gas witha bonus of oil and natural gasliquids give the Granite Washoutstanding returns.BARNETT SHALEThe massive Barnett in northcentralTexas is the granddaddyof all natural gas shale plays.FAYETTEVILLE SHALEScenic central Arkansasis home to the prolificFayetteville Shale.MARCELLUS SHALEDeep beneath northernAppalachia, Marcellus Shalenatural gas will revitalizethe region.HAYNESVILLE SHALEChesapeake’s discovery of theHaynesville makes the play’ssuccess even sweeter.FAYETTEVILLE SHALEThe Fayetteville Shale of central Arkansas emergedas the second important U.S. shale play in early 2005.Chesapeake had already developed a presence in theWoodford Shale of southeastern Oklahoma in 2004,so when we learned in 2005 of initial success in theFayetteville, we aggressively jumped into Arkansas, acquiring approximately 550,000 net acres of primeFayetteville acreage by mid-year 2008. Our drillingsuccess came quickly in the Fayetteville as ourknowledge of shale development from the Barnettand Woodford plays helped establish Chesapeake asthe second-largest player in the Fayetteville.A key to Chesapeake’s Fayetteville success hasbeen our September 2008 joint venture with LondonbasedBP, the world’s second-largest oil company. In this joint venture, we sold 25% of ourassets in the Fayetteville to BP for $1.9billion in cash and drilling carries. Today,we are producing from more than500 net wells in the Fayetteville on our460,000 net acres and estimate we coulddrill up to 5,200 additional net wells inthe years ahead.HAYNESVILLE SHALEThe Haynesville Shale in NorthwestLouisiana and East Texas is the shaleGRANITE WASHplay of which we are most proud because it wasdiscovered by Chesapeake’s own geoscientists andengineers. We began our geoscientific investigationof the Haynesville in 2005–06 and tested our theoriesthrough drilling in 2007. In 2008, we formed aninnovative joint venture with our well-respectedindustry partner, Houston-based Plains Exploration& Production Company, to which we sold 20% ofour Haynesville assets for $3.2 billion in cash anddrilling carries. The Haynesville Shale is now the nation’s secondlargestproducing shale play. It is so large (more thantwice the size of the Barnett core area) and so overpressured(holding more gas in place per square milethan the Barnett) that we believe it will likely surpassthe Barnett by 2014 to become the largest naturalgas producing field in the U.S. Ultimate recoveriesfrom the Haynesville could exceed 250 tcfe, making itpotentially one of the five largest natural gas fields inthe world. Today, we are producing from more than200 net wells in the Haynesville on our 520,000 netleasehold acres and estimate we could drill up to6,500 additional net wells in the years ahead.BARNETT SHALEFAYETTEVILLE SHALEMARCELLUS SHALE6 CHESAPEAKE ENERGY CORPORATION

TECHNOLOGYAssociate Geologist EmikoBogard takes a closer lookat the microscopic qualitiesof shale.HORIZONTAL DRILLINGChesapeake’s expertise inhorizontal drilling has beena key factor in its success.CORE ANALYSISScientists in the company’sReservoir Technology Centerstudy core samples to unlockthe secrets of shale gas.MARCELLUS SHALEWe first became aware of the Marcellus in 2005 whenwe were negotiating our $2.2 billion acquisition ofAppalachia’s second-largest natural gas producer,Columbia Natural Resources, LLC (CNR). Although CNRwas not actively developing the Marcellus at thetime of our acquisition, Chesapeake’s geoscientistsrecognized that CNR’s industry-leading leaseholdposition in Appalachia would overlay a significantportion of the Marcellus in northwestern WestVirginia and southern New York (CNR had unfortunatelypreviously sold its Pennsylvania assets). In 2007, we aggressively accelerated our Marcellusleasehold acquisition efforts in Pennsylvania andbegan to prepare for our first drilling activities. Byearly 2008, we had determined the Marcellus couldbe prospective over an area of approximately 15 millionnet acres (approximately five times larger thanthe prospective Haynesville core area and 10 timeslarger than the Barnett core area). After acquiring 1.8 million net acres, we enteredinto a joint venture in late 2008 with Oslo, NorwaybasedStatoil, one of the largest and most respectedEuropean energy companies. In this transaction, wesold Statoil 32.5% of our Marcellus assets for $3.375billion in cash and drilling carries. In addition, wehave joined with Statoil in the search for other shaleplays around the world in a 50/50 partnership. Weare excited by the opportunity to extend our naturalgas shale expertise from the U.S. to other parts of theworld through our Statoil joint venture. Today, weare producing from more than 150 net wells in theMarcellus on our 1.6 million net acres and estimatewe could drill up to 20,000 additional net wells inthe years ahead.BOSSIER SHALEThe Bossier Shale is one of the two new shaleplays that expanded our “Big 4” shale playsfrom 2008 into the “Big 6” of 2009. The Bossieroverlays a portion of the Haynesville Shaleand is perhaps the “sleeper” of the Big 6 shaleplays. The reason is that in Louisiana, leasesoften restrict the lessee (i.e., the producer) to onlyholding future drilling rights down through thedeepest formation drilled. Because the BossierHORIZONTAL DRILLINGTechnologyCORE ANALYSIS8 CHESAPEAKE ENERGY CORPORATION

lies above the Haynesville, horizontal wells drilledjust to the Bossier may not always hold Haynesvillerights. Therefore, Chesapeake and other producersare drilling aggressively to hold all rights throughthe Haynesville before the typical three-year-terminitial leases expire, so not much Bossier drilling is yetunderway. However, once our leases are HBP (heldby production) by Haynesville drilling, we will begindeveloping the Bossier Shale more aggressively in2013. In the Bossier play, we own 180,000 net acres onwhich we estimate we could drill up to 2,250 net wellsin the years ahead.EAGLE FORD SHALEThe Eagle Ford Shale of South Texas was the secondaddition to our Big 6 inventory in 2009. The EagleFord is different from the other Big 6 shale playsbecause it has three distinct elements: a dry gas play,an oil play and a wet gas play. Chesapeake has acquiredapproximately 300,000 net acres to date, all of whichare in the oil and wet gas portions of the play. Giventhat oil and natural gas liquids are valued much morehighly than natural gas, we are focusing all of our EagleFord leasing efforts in the oil and wet gas portions ofthe play. Our first three wells have been successful, andwe expect to accelerate our drilling in the Eagle Ford in2010 and beyond. Our leasehold position could supportthe drilling of up to 2,000 additional net wells.LOOKING FOR MORE OILIn addition to further developing our Big 6 naturalgas shale plays, another important goal of the companyin 2010 is to find more oil. Oil comprised only8% of Chesapeake’s 2009 production, and with oilprices more than 3.5 times higher today than naturalgas prices on an energy equivalent basis, it makespowerful economic sense to increase our effortstoward finding, leasing and developing large scaleunconventional oil projects using the skills we havedeveloped in unconventional natural gas projects. This challenge is especially difficult because oilmolecules and wet natural gas molecules are largerthan dry natural gas molecules and therefore muchmore difficult to produce from ultra-tight unconventionalreservoirs. In addition to further developing our Big 6 natural gas shaleplays, another important goal of the company in 2010 is tofind more oil.We kicked off this “gas to oil” initiative twoyears ago, and to date, have already had initialsuccess in 10 new oil plays. We also are working onadditional oil play concepts. If these plays and conceptsprove commercial on a large scale, then we believeChesapeake owns more than four billion barrelsof unrecognized oil resources that will substantiallyincrease the company’s value as they are developed.Because early drilling results need to remain confidentialas we acquire more leasehold in these newoil plays, we are being guarded with our oil drillingresults disclosures. As 2010 progresses, however, welook forward to revealing more about the potentialof Chesapeake’s oil upside. I believe these oil discoveriescould prove to be the most significant valuecreation uplift for the company since our gas shalediscoveries of the past few years.3-D SEISMIC This rapidlyadvancing technologyhas been critical in enablingChesapeake’s geoscientiststo steer our horizontal wellsinto the best shale rock.3-D SEISMICINNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY AND SHARED KNOWLEDGEIn the natural gas exploration and production business, success is predicated on knowledge: knowingwhere to drill, how to complete and how to transfer the expertise gained in one play to the next.Using 3-D seismic, Chesapeake’s geoscientists and reservoir engineers study the geologic structures ofplays and potential drillsites. CHESAPEAKE IS COMMITTED TO SAFE,EFFECTIVE HYDRAULIC FRACTURINGHydraulic fracture stimulation, commonly known asfracing, is a proven completion technique essential tothe recovery of natural gas from deep shale formations.More than one million fracture stimulation treatmentshave been performed in the U.S. since 1949. Duringthis process, fluids are pumped at high pressuresdown the wellbore to create small fissures, orfractures. These fractures are propped open by sand toallow natural gas to flow into the wellbore.Chesapeake’s fracturing fluids are more than 99% waterand sand, along with a small amount of special purposeadditives. The same additives can be found in a numberof household products such as cosmetics, laundrydetergents, pool treatment fluids and food.On average, Chesapeake’s fracing operations occurmore than 1.5 miles below the surface and areseparated from shallow groundwater formations bythousands of feet of impenetrable rock. In addition, multiple layers of steel casing and cement surroundthe wellbore creating further layers of protection. In2009 the Ground Water Protection Council issued areport stating that the chances of fracing operationsimpacting groundwater aquifers were as low asone in 200 million. For more information, please visitwww.hydraulicfracturing.com.Environment12 CHESAPEAKE ENERGY CORPORATION

FUELING AMERICA’S CLEAN ENERGYFUTUREBecause of a series of insights into the future, followedby good decisions and hard work, Chesapeakehas grown from a small startup company 20 yearsago into an industry leader today. Along the way, wehave built the industry’s highest quality asset base inthe Big 6 natural gas shale plays. These shale playshave dramatically changed how we can solve ournation’s most important energy and environmentalchallenges in the years ahead, while also creatingmillions of truly green jobs that pay well and do notneed taxpayer or ratepayer subsidies. They also canimprove America’s national security by reducing ourdependence on foreign oil. There has never really been any debate aboutwhether natural gas is a good fuel — its carbon-lightmolecular structure guarantees that. The issue has alwaysbeen whether there is enough of it to begin movingour electrical generation system more aggressivelyaway from dirty coal and whether it is the right timeto begin moving our transportation system away fromexpensive foreign oil. With the enormity of the Big 6REDUCED FOOTPRINTTRAININGWATER RECYCLINGnatural gas shale plays now more fully understood,it should become increasingly clear that the U.S. has ahuge competitive advantage in the world. On the economic front, U.S. natural gas prices areamong the lowest in the industrialized world and arelikely to remain so for an extended period because ofthe discovery of the Big 6 shale natural gas resources. On the environmental front, the U.S. can regain itsleadership in environmental best practices by burningmore clean natural gas and less dirty coal to makeour electricity. And finally, natural gas can enable theU.S. to transition its transportation system away fromdangerous and expensive foreign oil to cheaper andcleaner American natural gas.To capture the important advantages the Big 6shale plays can provide, U.S. leaders must recognizethe “Age of Natural Gas” has arrived and that itwill remain with us for decades to come. FUELING AMERICA’S FUTUREAubrey McClendon on the Potential of Natural Gas in the 21st CenturyThe enormous potential of the 21st century’s“Age of Natural Gas” is now fully inview. Vast new reserves of natural gas inshale reservoirs deep beneath our country havebeen discovered in the past five years. Theseshale reservoirs are now estimated to containmore than two quadrillion cubic feet of naturalgas, more than doubling America’s previouslyestimated natural gas reserves, and giving usclose to a 200-year supply of clean, affordable,American natural gas. These unconventionalreservoirs are a remarkable addition to America’sbountiful natural resource endowment. They are also essential to retaining ournation’s prosperity. Because of our relianceon dangerous and expensive foreignoil to power our cars and trucks and ondirty coal to produce 50% of our electricity,America’s position of global economic andenvironmental leadership for the next centuryis unfortunately in doubt. It need not be.Underneath many parts of the U.S. lies aburied treasure of natural gas that is quicklybecoming the envy of the world — it’s clean, affordable, abundant, American, and broughtto you by public independent natural gas producerssuch as Chesapeake. Two quadrillion cubic feet of America’snatural gas represent more energy than SaudiArabia’s 200 billion barrels of oil reserves — butAmerica’s natural gas is much cleaner and 70%cheaper than Saudi oil. In 2009, the U.S. passedRussia as the biggest producer of natural gasin the world, but how many Americans realizethis remarkable achievement? Our politicalleadership must begin to acknowledge andcelebrate this tremendous accomplishmentand to recognize the strategic and practicalbenefits of more aggressively using our enormousnew reserves of natural gas.NATURAL GAS IS THE BESTSUBSTITUTE FOR FOREIGN OILThe U.S. imports approximately 60% of the oilthat we consume — a dangerous addictionthat costs our country $1 billion per day. Thispercentage will likely rise in the years aheadas oil prices inevitably increase to choke offdemand in the industrialized countries tomake room for burgeoning oil demand fromrapidly developing countries in Asia, theMiddle East and in South America. This is anaddiction America cannot afford in good economictimes and certainly not in the tougheconomic times the nation is facing today. But if our political leadership would awakenand recognize that this addiction could beovercome by converting some of the currentdemand for foreign oil to new demand for domesticnatural gas, America’s economic futurewould be much stronger and our environmentaloutlook would be brighter. Natural gas has only50% of the carbon that gasoline has, but moreimportantly, natural gas vehicles emit little tono harmful pollutants such as carbon monoxide(CO), nitrogen oxide (NOx), and toxic volatileorganic compounds (VOCs) that gasoline anddiesel consumption currently produce. The best way to begin breaking this foreignoil addiction is to endorse the NAT GAS Act (H.R.1835 and S. 1408) now pending in Congress. Fordetails on these bills, please visit www.cngnow.com. These bills would gradually and efficientlyintroduce clean, American natural gas as the fuelof choice for heavy-, medium- and light-dutytruck fleets in the U.S., replacing diesel refinedfrom expensive foreign oil.Once truck fleets have been convertedto natural gas (in the form of liquefied naturalgas, or “LNG”) and natural gas refuelingpumps have been added to many of our nation’struck stops, we can then begin convertingpassenger cars to natural gas (in the formof compressed natural gas, or “CNG”). Thisconversion process would save American consumersbillions of dollars because natural gasis 70% cheaper than oil. Americans also wouldGRANITE WASH WELL Roberts County, Texas14 CHESAPEAKE ENERGY CORPORATION

enjoy the added benefits of cleaner air andwater and greater national security.Speaking of national security, let’s not forgetthat the real price of oil is far more than the $85per barrel that it costs today. When the Americanmilitary’s cost of defending the world’s oilshipping lanes and fighting wars in the MiddleEast and nearby areas is considered, some expertssay the true cost of oil to Americans maybe over $200 per barrel. The current practice ofspending $1 billion per day to import 11 millionbarrels of oil from foreign countries is simply notsustainable — it’s a dangerous, dirty and expensivehabit that must be curtailed.I drive a converted Chevy Tahoe that runs onnatural gas from my home, and I can assure youit feels great to refuel my vehicle at $1.00 pergallon with a clean fuel that is made in Americaand creates American jobs. My goal is to makesure all Americans one day have the opportunityto enjoy that same great feeling. We must demand that our leadership beginsacting now to make the transition to clean, affordable, abundant, American natural gas beforeoil reaches $150 per barrel (bringing the price ofgasoline to $4.50–5.00 per gallon) and we findourselves right back in another recession, or perhapseven worse, a depression. These are seriousissues, and our nation does not have one day towaste in beginning the transition to a transportationsystem based on natural gas rather thanon expensive foreign oil.NATURAL GAS IS THE BESTSUBSTITUTE FOR DIRTY COALA recent survey Chesapeake commissionedshowed that most Americans believe their electricitycomes from coal, nuclear or wind — veryfew people know that natural gas provides 22%of America’s electricity. It is critical for Americansto realize how their electricity is generated. As more Americans take responsibility for theenvironmental impact they create through theirelectricity consumption, they need to knowthere are alternatives to burning dirty coal besidesconstructing new nuclear power plants ornew wind and solar facilities. Nuclear plants areprohibitively expensive and time consuming tobuild. Wind and solar facilities are not economicwithout taxpayer or ratepayer subsidies. Theyalso cannot provide baseload power becauseof the lack of sunshine at night and on cloudydays and because of the unpredictability of thewind. These alternatives also require the enormousexpense of building unsightly power linesover long distances. The only scalable, affordable alternative toburning dirty coal is to burn clean natural gas.And the best news is that it would be relativelyeasy to shut down the dirtiest 33% of America’scoal plants (better known at Chesapeake as the“Filthy 100”) and replace their electrical outputwith natural gas-fired electricity. That is becausecoal plants generally run about 75% of the timewhile natural gas power plants only run about25% of the time. The U.S. has enough naturalgas to ramp up natural gas power plants to runat least 50% of the time so that we can decommissionthe Filthy 100.Doing so would eliminate the following annualestimated pollution: 600 million tons ofcarbon dioxide (implicated in global warmingconcerns); 700,000 tons of nitrogen oxide (exacerbatesrespiratory and heart diseases); 1.5 milliontons of sulfur dioxide (the main ingredientof acid rain); 19,000 tons of mercury (one of thedeadliest toxins known to mankind, and nonexistentin natural gas); and millions of tons of particulates(which the American Lung Associationsays kill 24,000 Americans per year).Confronted with these facts, the coal industryresponds with two claims: first, that natural gasis more expensive, and second, that coal can bemade clean. Natural gas today sells for around$4 per mcf, making it nearly equivalent in cost tocoal, but far cheaper when you factor in the socialand environmental costs from coal pollution. Andto say that coal is clean or can be made clean isextremely misleading. No scalable, affordabletechnology exists today to make coal clean. It remainsan expensive fantasy on a distant horizon. In addition, so-called “clean coal” still retains50% of coal’s original carbon, which ironicallywould place “clean coal” at a carbon levelequivalent to natural gas. So why not just use theLet’s embrace a clean and prosperous energy future through thesubstitution of American natural gas for foreign oil and dirty coal. The time for action is NOW!reality of clean natural gas today and save hundredsof billions of dollars and several decades oftime associated with the daunting challenge oftrying to make coal clean? And remember, thecarbon removed from coal to make it “clean”doesn’t just go away — it has to be disposed ofsomewhere. Right now the “clean coal” plan isto pump more than 100 million gallons of liquidcarbon dioxide underneath the ground everyday and hope it stays there. That process is expensive, unproven and is projected to consumeabout 30–35% of a typical power plant’s electricaloutput. No wonder the coal industry favorsthe “clean coal” idea so much — it would actuallyincrease coal consumption by 30–35%! Thisinsanity must stop! Our country needs to recognizethat the future should belong to clean, affordable, practical energy sources — and naturalgas is the only ready-to-go, scalable alternativeto dirty coal.Natural gas provides an affordable, environmentallyfriendly substitute for foreign oil anddirty coal — while also stimulating America’seconomy and strengthening its energy security.Let’s embrace a clean and prosperous energyfuture through the substitution of Americannatural gas for foreign oil and dirty coal. The time for action is NOW!FUELING AMERICA’S FUTURE 15

OPERATING AREASChesapeake is the second-largest producer of U.S. natural gas and has built the nation’s largest natural gas resource basewith high-quality U.S. shale assets within the Big 6 shale plays: the Barnett, Fayetteville, Haynesville, Marcellus, Bossier andEagle Ford. Our unique position in these six shale plays, as well as the liquids-rich Granite Wash plays of western Oklahomaand the Texas Panhandle, will provide us competitive advantages for decades to come. No other company in the industry hasamassed a leading position in each of the low-cost, low-risk Big 6 shale plays. We own interests in approximately 44,100 producing natural gas and oil wells, and in 2009 we produced 906 bcfe for anaverage of 2.5 bcfe per day. At year-end 2009, our proved reserves were 14.3 tcfe, of which 95% were natural gas and all ofwhich were onshore in the U.S. We have also captured the nation’s largest inventory of future drilling opportunities onapproximately 13 million net acres of total leasehold in the U.S. The map below highlights Chesapeake’s ownership positionin our key operating areas.1 2 3 4 5 678 91016 CHESAPEAKE ENERGY CORPORATION

In January 2010, Chesapeakecompleted a $2.25 billion Barnett Shale joint venture transaction with Total S.A. (NYSE:TOT, FP:FP)(Total), whereby Total acquired a 25% interest in Chesapeake’s upstream Barnett Shale assets.Total paid Chesapeake approximately $800 million in cash at closing and will pay a further $1.45 billionby funding 60% of Chesapeake’s share of drilling and completion expenditures until the $1.45 billionobligation has been funded, which Chesapeake expects to occur by year-end 2012. We anticipate using anaverage of 25 operated rigs in 2010 to further develop our leasehold. On our acreage, we estimate we could drillup to 2,400 net wells in the years to come.Other Mid-Continent Chesapeake’s Other Mid-Continent area includes operationsin Oklahoma, the Texas Panhandle, southwestern Kansas and western Arkansas. In additionto various conventional plays in this area, our activities currently focus on the massive Saharaunconventional natural gas resource project in northwestern Oklahoma, where Chesapeake is byfar the dominant operator with nearly 950,000 net leasehold acres. Sahara is a multi-county playwith excellent low-risk, shallow natural gas production and an emerging horizontally drilledoil opportunity in the Mississippian formation. In the Anadarko Basin area of the Mid-Continent,we are developing multiple horizontal unconventional oil plays, with a significantpresence in the emerging Cleveland and Tonkawa tight sand oil plays, in which we are leveragingwhat we have learned from our horizontal Granite Wash discoveries.Fayetteville Shale The Fayetteville is currently the third most productive shale playin the U.S. and one of the nation’s 10 largest natural gas fields of any type. Chesapeake ownsthe industry’s second-largest acreage position in the core area of the Fayetteville Shale play inArkansas, totaling nearly 460,000 net acres. We estimate we could drill up to 5,200 net wells on ourFayetteville acreage in the years ahead and plan to utilize an average of 10 operated rigs in 2010to further develop our leasehold. During 2009, $600 million of Chesapeake’s drilling costs in theFayetteville were paid for by its joint venture partner, BP America (NYSE:BP). During the fourth quarter2009, BP paid Chesapeake the remaining balance of its drilling carry obligations and Chesapeakeand BP each then began paying its proportionate working interest costs.Appalachian Basin Often referred to as America’s most drilled but least exploredarea, Appalachia presents abundant growth opportunities through the introduction of leading-edgeexploration, drilling and production technologies, in which Chesapeake is a recognizedindustry leader, into a basin largely ignored by the industry since the 1940s. Our leasehold position, excluding our Marcellus position, includes 1.2 million net acres in the Lower Huron Shale play andan additional 1.7 million net acres in other conventional and unconventional plays in the region. We have developed multiple deep exploration prospects in Appalachia that we plan totest once natural gas prices recover to higher levels.17 CHESAPEAKE ENERGY CORPORATION2009 Total Production:240 bcfe, +33%, 26%12/31/09 Proved Reserves:3,430 bcfe, +17%, 24%12/31/09 Net Leasehold Acres:290,000, -6%, 2%2009 Total Production:235 bcfe, -23%, 26%12/31/09 Proved Reserves:3,010 bcfe, -29%, 21%12/31/09 Net Leasehold Acres:4,330,000, -9%, 33%2009 Total Production:90 bcfe, +64%, 10%12/31/09 Proved Reserves:2,170 bcfe, +229%, 15%12/31/09 Net Leasehold Acres:460,000, +10%, 4%2009 Total Production:30 bcfe, -14%, 3%12/31/09 Proved Reserves:1,160 bcfe, -24%, 8%12/31/09 Net Leasehold Acres:2,930,000, -7%, 22%Note: Figures may not add to companytotals due to rounding in each area.* Compared to last year** % of company totalNM Not meaningful

678Marcellus Shale Chesapeake is the largest leasehold owner and most active driller in theMarcellus Shale play that spans from northern West Virginia across much of Pennsylvania intosouthern New York. The Marcellus is located near the highest gas-consuming region of the U.S. andtherefore receives the best natural gas prices in the U.S. We estimate we could drill up to 20,000net wells on our Marcellus acreage in the future and plan to utilize an average of 31 operated rigs in2010 to further develop our 1.6 million net acres of Marcellus leasehold. During 2009, approximately$160 million of Chesapeake’s drilling costs in the Marcellus were paid for by its jointventure partner, Statoil (NYSE:STO, OSE:STL). During 2010 through 2012, 75% of Chesapeake’sdrilling costs (approximately $2.0 billion) in the Marcellus will be paid for by STO.We remain very active in acquiring additional leasehold in the Marcellus and expect that overtime, it will become the largest natural gas field in the U.S. and the second largest in the world.Permian and Delaware Basins In the northern portion of thePermian Basin, Chesapeake has focused on discovering and developing variousshallow- to medium-depth horizontal oil plays and also operates a number of secondaryrecovery oil projects. We plan to utilize an average of six operated rigs in 2010 to furtherdevelop our 2.15 million net acres of leasehold in the Permian and Delaware Basins. Ournew horizontal oil projects in this area, including the Avalon Shale and the Bone SpringSand, have the potential to deliver significant upside as we move towards substantiallyincreasing our oil production in the years ahead.Eagle Ford Shale As part of a growing emphasis on increasing its oil and naturalgas liquids production, Chesapeake has recently built one of the top five industry leaseholdpositions in the Eagle Ford Shale play in South Texas. At year-end 2009, the company owned approximately80,000 net acres of Eagle Ford leasehold and now has 300,000 net acres. Our focus hasbeen on the oil and wet gas prone portions of the play and we plan to utilize an average offour operated rigs in 2010 to further develop our growing Eagle Ford leasehold position.2009 Total Production:15 bcfe, +200%, 2%12/31/09 Proved Reserves:260 bcfe, +550%, 2%12/31/09 Net Leasehold Acres:1,620,000, +30%, 12%2009 Total Production:75 bcfe, -6%, 8%12/31/09 Proved Reserves:740 bcfe, -20%, 5%12/31/09 Net Leasehold Acres:2,150,000, -23%, 16%2009 Total Production:0 bcfe, NM, NM12/31/09 Proved Reserves:0 bcfe, NM, NM12/31/09 Net Leasehold Acres:80,000, NM, 1%(300,000 as of 3/31/10)910East Texas, Gulf Coast, South Texas and Louisiana In EastTexas, Chesapeake owns significant vertical natural gas production from wells thatproduce from various tight natural gas sand formations in medium to deep horizons, includingthe Pettet, Travis Peak and Cotton Valley formations. We have established a significantpresence in a number of counties along the prolific Texas Gulf Coast, where weutilize 3-D seismic data to delineate structural and stratigraphic traps, primarily in the Frio,Yegua and Wilcox formations. This area has been de-emphasized as we move our drillingaway from legacy vertical natural gas drilling to horizontal natural gas and oil drilling inunconventional plays.Haynesville/Bossier Shales In early 2008, Chesapeake announced itsdiscovery of the Haynesville Shale, a reservoir that likely will become one of the twolargest natural gas fields in the U.S. (along with the Marcellus) and one of the five largest in theworld. The Haynesville Shale is now the nation’s second-largest producing shale play. TheBossier Shale lies above and overlaps much of our Hayneville prospective leasehold. Weare the largest leasehold owner and most active driller of new wells in the Haynesville/Bossiershale play, which is located in northwestern Louisiana and East Texas. We estimate we coulddrill up to 8,750 net wells on our Haynesville/Bossier Shale acreage in the future and plan to utilizean average of 35 operated rigs in 2010 to further develop our 520,000 net leasehold acres of Haynesville/BossierShale. Chesapeake and its 20% joint venture partner, Plains Exploration & Production Company (NYSE:PXP),are producing from more than 200 net wells in the Haynesville play and continue to experience outstanding drillingresults. INVESTOR Q&AWhat is CHK doing to increase itspercentage of oil and natural gasliquids production?STEVE DIXON: While the exact timing ofa peak in worldwide oil production remains agreat debate, the vast majority of investors andindustry professionals would agree that a peakin worldwide natural gas production is muchfurther away. We believe this is reflected in thecurrent market price of oil relative to natural gas— today, oil is priced more than 3.5 times higherthan natural gas on an energy equivalent basis.Compared to natural gas, oil is harder to findand even more challenging to move throughand produce from tight reservoir rocks. One ofthe few strategic weaknesses of Chesapeake isthe relatively small percentage of our productionthat comes from oil and natural gas liquids— that, however, is on the verge of changing.Over the past two years, Chesapeake’sworld class unconventional resource teamshave been quietly working to develop oilfocusedprojects in the U.S. where our expertisein identifying, analyzing and commercializingunconventional natural gas reservoirscould be transferred to tight rock oil reservoirs.Innovative horizontal drilling and well completiontechniques enable our geoscientists andengineers to extract oil and natural gas liquidsfrom pore spaces in rocks that are more than 300times smaller in diameter than a human hair. Our efforts to crack the code on these difficult, but very lucrative, liquids-rich plays havegreatly benefited from our state-of-the-artReservoir Technology Center (RTC). This unique, proprietary core laboratory has enabled us toquickly analyze rock properties, model completiontechniques and assess fluid movementproperties in multiple tight rock formations. Ithas also helped Chesapeake minimize resourcesand capital spent on leasing and drilling programsin many plays that are likely to proveuneconomic. The company has now established a strongleasehold position and made substantialprogress in commercializing 10 liquids-rich plays, including the Eagle Ford Shale in South Texas, the Niobrara and Frontier plays in Wyoming, theTexas Panhandle and Colony Granite Washes, the Cleveland, Tonkawa and Mississippian playsin western Oklahoma and the Bone Spring andAvalon shale plays in the Permian Basin. In eachof these 10 plays, we have drilled successful wellsand established very large leasehold positions. We are now in the process of reallocating capitalexpenditures from some of our natural gas playsand increasing drilling activity in each of theseemerging liquids-rich plays. These new plays could enable Chesapeaketo substantially increase its percentage of productionof liquids from 8% in 2009 to perhaps asmuch as 20% over the next few years. If we areable to achieve this objective, our percentage ofrevenue from liquids production could approachthe 50% balance we are seeking. What makes CHK a great placeto work?MARTHA BURGER: There’s not a set formulafor creating a great place to work. Instead, itevolves out of a corporate culture which demonstratescommitment to making and keepingits employees happy and motivated. At Chesapeake,we work hard to create an environmentwhere people feel valued, are challenged andare part of something special.Chesapeake provides a wide array of benefitsto employees. To name a few, we have:an on-site health and dental clinic at our headquarters,a 72,000-square-foot best-in-classfitness center, stock and bonuses awardedtwice a year, a generous 401(k) match of up to15% of pay, adoption and fertility benefits anda flexible work week schedule. We believe the Chesapeake culture isunique. It starts from the top and disseminatesthroughout the organization. New employeesexperience this very quickly during the company’sNew Employee Orientation program, which is a half-day session led by our CEOAubrey McClendon. Our employees are empoweredto make decisions without gettingcaught up in bureaucracy and are encouragedto create innovation along the way.We expect industry-leading performanceand results from employees, and that meansthat we must do our part by providing themwith the best tools, a motivating environmentand the space to grow and learn. Employees atChesapeake have access to first-class resources, such as large dual-screen monitor work stationsin every office, the safest, most modern trucks, rigs and equipment in the field. This commitmentinspires our employees to perform to thebest of their ability. We pride ourselves on our efforts to bea great neighbor, employer and corporatecitizen. Chesapeake’s campus is a landmarkin Oklahoma City with immaculate landscapedgrounds, three full-service restaurants, a reservoirtechnology center and an athletic fieldfor team sports and individual exercise. Thecompany’s high work environment standardsextend beyond its corporate headquarters toevery wellsite, field and subsidiary office. For the third consecutive year, Chesapeakehas been named to FORTUNE magazine’s 100Best Companies to Work For ® list. This year thecompany jumped from #73 to #34. Two-thirds ofa company’s score is based on an extensive thirdpartyadministered employee survey, which issent to a random sample of employees. The surveyasks questions related to employee attitudesabout management’s credibility, job satisfactionand corporate culture. We are thrilled again tobe awarded this prestigious honor because it reaffirmsthat our employees believe Chesapeakeis one of the best places to work in America. Why does CHK monetize assetsand what additional opportunitiesare possible?MARC ROWLAND: Chesapeake has alwaysbeen a growth company and has amassed anabundance of attractive investment opportunitiesthat will keep us growing for years tocome. To fully benefit from these opportunities,we make substantial capital investments eachyear and work proactively to arrange the mostattractive funding alternatives for these investments. We reinvest our operating cash flow primarilyin our drilling program and in our midstream, compression, drilling and oilfield servicesubsidiaries. We also make investments for fu-20 CHESAPEAKE ENERGY CORPORATION

DIXON BURGER ROWLAND JACOBSONMOBLEYture growth largely in new leasehold in emergingplays and to further solidify our leaseholdposition in our existing plays. As part of our programto fund our leasehold investments whilereducing our financial leverage, we periodicallysell or monetize non-core assets. Our goal is tosecure proceeds from asset sales well in excessof our reinvestment needs in order to providecash for debt reduction. We believe this financialstrategy will enable Chesapeake to becomean investment-grade company. In just the past two years, we have successfullymonetized $10.7 billion of assets (in whichour cost basis was only $2.7 billion) by sellingminority joint venture interests in four of ourshale plays. In addition, we have sold producingassets through volumetric production paymenttransactions and also smaller packages of noncoreassets that did not compete well for capitalin our overall investment program. We plan topursue similar asset sales in the years ahead, possibly including a joint venture in the EagleFord Shale, additional volumetric productionpayments and partial monetization of our midstreamand other non-E&P assets. Why have world-class energycompanies chosen to do jointventures with CHK?DOUG JACOBSON: Chesapeake’s industryleadingposition in U.S. shale gas plays has attractedthe interest of numerous world classenergy companies, including three European integratedoil companies: London-based BP, OslobasedStatoil and Paris-based Total, which havea combined market capitalization of $400 billion. We believe these joint ventures are also greatinvestments for our joint venture partners, whobenefit from Chesapeake’s expertise in identifyingand leasing prime shale gas assets, ourindustry-leading drilling program that efficientlyconverts leasehold to producing assets, our scaleand purchasing power with service providersand our vertically integrated operations. Ourpartners are also able to make substantial lowriskinvestments over multi-year periods withminimal commitment of their own personnel. These benefits have enabled Chesapeake tosecure premium valuations for its assets thoughjoint venture transactions and generate attractivereturns for Chesapeake’s shareholders. Will shale gas plays permanentlyoversupply U.S. natural gasmarkets?JEFF MOBLEY: The rise of shale gas playsin the U.S. has led to substantial growth innatural gas supplies and much lower naturalgas prices for consumers. More importantly, this new abundant and affordable resourceprovides consumers with long-term supplyvisibility and reliability to meet market demandsand dampen price volatility. However, shale gas only accounts for approximately15% of total U.S. natural gas production.Currently, 85% of U.S. natural gas productioncomes from non-shale plays, the vastmajority of which have substantially higherfinding and development costs than the majorU.S. shale gas plays. Without new drilling, production from virtually all natural gas fieldsdeclines approximately 20% or more per yearSTEVEN C. ROWLAND Executive VicePresident and Chief Financial OfficerDOUGLAS J. JACOBSON ExecutiveVice President – Acquisitions and DivestituresJEFFREY L. MOBLEY Senior VicePresident – Investor Relations and Researchthrough normal depletion. Chesapeake believesthis depletion, combined with reduced drillingactivity in high-cost, non-shale gas fields willmake way for further growth in productionfrom the low-cost shale plays to perhaps asmuch as 30–40% of total U.S. natural gasproduction over the next few years. Will this lead to a permanent oversupply? We don’t believe so. Rather, the market will bebalanced over time through reduced drillingon marginal, high-cost production, probably inthe range of $6–7 per mcf. The abundance oflow-cost shale gas will likely lead to a lowerultimate cost of gas supplies to consumers, but we believe that natural gas prices will besustained at high enough levels to profitablydevelop shale gas.Chesapeake was early to recognize thisstructural change in the natural gas industryand strategically invested to capture the largestleasehold position in the Big 6 shale plays. This unique position in the industry shouldmake Chesapeake one of the greatest beneficiariesof the shale gas revolution and themore stable price of natural gas in the future.INVESTOR Q&A 21

As the country’s most active driller ofnew wells, Chesapeake’s presence in an areaincreases business activity and creates wellpayingjobs that improve people’s lives andstimulate local economies. In addition to our activities’ impact onlocal economies, the company’s tax contributionsare substantial: in 2009, Chesapeakepaid more than $730 million in totalstate and local taxes, including ad valorem, severance, sales and use, employee withholdingand unemployment, corporate incomeand franchise taxes. These taxes areused for building and maintaining schools, recreational facilities, parks and roads — and ata time when state and local governments arefeeling the pinch of recession. We are proud tosupport America’s economy with our growthwhile we also help to reduce the country’s dependenceon expensive foreign oil.In addition to stimulating the economy,Chesapeake makes strategic donations tohelp improve lives and local economies in citieswhere we operate. In 2009 the companyannounced a donation of $5 million to build afour-story Finish Line Tower in the BoathouseDistrict of downtown Oklahoma City. We led theway in developing this emerging area of thecity with the completion of the first boathouseon the Oklahoma River in 2005. Today, thereare several more boathouses under construction, and upon their completion, five stateof-the-artboathouses will confirm OklahomaCity’s international recognition as the nation’spremier canoeing, rowing and kayakingvenue. Recently, USA Canoe/Kayak moved itsheadquarters to Oklahoma City. With the Okla-homa River serving as an official U.S. OlympicTraining site, Oklahoma City is now a strongcontender for the upcoming 2012 Olympiccanoe/kayak trials.FUELING THE NEXT GENERATIONPreparing tomorrow’s leaders today is imperativeto building and sustaining a competitivework force. In 2009, Chesapeake supporteduniversities, schools, academic chairs, scholarshipsand other educational programs withcontributions of $4.5 million. The backboneof a strong country in today’s competitiveeconomy is education, and by investing in ittoday, we are fueling a brighter future for thenext generation.More than $1.3 million of the company’seducational contributions helped fund highereducation tuition for nearly 400 students.Chesapeake scholarships help recruit the bestand brightest students and provide educationalopportunities in communities where we operate. In Northwest Louisiana, for example, weprovided scholarships to 25 students at fiveuniversities and colleges based on need andcommunity leadership. To increase diversityin the energy industry, Chesapeake partneredwith the Fort Valley State University’s (Fort Valley,Georgia) Cooperative Developmental EnergyProgram (CDEP) to award scholarships to minoritystudents pursuing geoscience and petroleumengineering degrees. Last year, over 50 studentsbenefited from our CDEP contributions. In Texas, Chesapeake established a newscholarship program, which will benefit qualifiedJohnson County high school graduates throughfive annual gifts totaling $125,000, available toqualifying seniors through 2013. With anotherfoundation matching Chesapeake’s contributions,a total of $250,000 will be available tosupport Johnson County scholars.24 CHESAPEAKE ENERGY CORPORATION

We also award scholarships to studentspursuing degrees in energy-related fieldssuch as geology, engineering, land and law.Through the Peak Program in Oklahoma, junior-and senior-level scholarship recipientsare paired with Chesapeake employee mentorswho help develop students’ knowledgeand provide career advice. There are currently30 mentors and 39 scholarship recipients participatingin the Peak Program. These numbersare expected to increase in the upcomingyears as the program is extended to universitiesoutside Oklahoma.University science departments are centersfor research to find the best approachesfor meeting society’s energy needs while reducingenvironmental costs. To further suchefforts, the company funded $1.5 million toendow two Chesapeake Energy Chairs in thefield of Climate Studies in the School of Meteorologyof the University of Oklahoma Collegeof Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences. Forthe past five years, Chesapeake’s meteorologicalteam in Chicago has provided the companywith long-range forecasting that has been veryhelpful to the success of its natural gas hedgingprogram.FUELING OUR COMMUNITIESVolunteerism has always been at the core ofthe company’s culture. In 2009 as part of Chesapeake’s20th anniversary celebration, a company-wideproject was launched through anemployee volunteer program — the H.E.L.P.Initiative (Helping Energize Local Progress). Many employees volunteer year-round,but this past summer employees were challengedto complete 20,000 hours of communityservice in five weeks. Chesapeake also permittedemployees to use four hours of companytime to complete this task. From renovatingplaygrounds in West Virginia to building a Habitatfor Humanity house in Texas, employeesresponded in full force. In just five weeks, Chesapeakeemployees exceeded the company’sgoal by 30%, donating 26,134 hours of serviceto 575 organizations in more than 70 communitiesacross the country. The hours they workedwould be comparable to a full-time employeeworking 40 hours a week for 13 years! Employeesand communities responded with such enthusiasmthat the volunteer push will becomean annual event. We listen to our communities to ensurewe are providing services they really need.In addition to the more than $21 million incharitable donations given last year, we alsomade numerous in-kind donations ofcomputers, reconditioned Chesapeakefleet vehicles and subsidized office space. With the slow economy affecting monetarydonations, many nonprofit groupsfound themselves struggling to meetbasic administrative costs with someon the verge of closing. To alleviate thisburden, we opened the ChesapeakeCommunity Plaza in Oklahoma City, providingmore than 67,000 square feet ofoffice space at low monthly rates. To date,10 nonprofit groups ranging from the OklahomaVisual Arts Coalition to Citizens Caringfor Children have relocated offices to the spaceand are now more able to focus on their missionrather than worry about how to pay rent.Chesapeake partners with other companiesand groups in hundreds of communitiesto meet basic needs. One example is in NorthTexas where we partnered with eye care companiesto provide vision screenings, examsand glasses to children in Tarrant County publicschools. So far 2,700 students have been testedwith many receiving prescription glasses atno cost.Regardless of the size of our contributions,Chesapeake and its employees are honored towork in local communities and partner withnonprofit groups and organizations to makea difference — fueling development and improvingthe communities that our employees, royalty owners and contractors all call home.(Upper right) Production Assistant JulieMiller carries food as part of her team’svolunteer work with Operation Blessingin Cleburne, Texas. Environmental, Health & SafetyChesapeake’s commitment to fueling America’s clean energy future is reflected in every aspect of what we do— from our corporate dedication to that of our employees and extending to the clean, affordable, abundantAmerican natural gas that we produce every day to improve lives across our country and enhance our nation’sfuture well-being.PRODUCING ENVIRONMENTALLYFRIENDLY FUELChesapeake employees are proud to be FuelingAmerica’s Future by exploring for and producingclean, affordable, abundant Americannatural gas. With almost a 200-year supplylocated in the U.S., natural gas can help reducethe nation’s dependence on foreign oil and dirtycoal, while creating jobs and revenue to fuelstate and local economies. It also provides anenvironmentally friendly source of power anda viable transportation alternative to foreign oil.Selling for less than half the cost of a gallon ofgasoline, compressed natural gas (CNG) powersvehicles that are among the greenest transportationoptions on the planet. A recent studycompleted on behalf of the California EnergyCommission concluded that CNG vehicles produceup to 30% less greenhouse gas emissionsthan comparable gasoline vehicles and up to22% less than comparable diesel vehicles.Dave Gum, Production Foreman, checks fluidlevel readings at the Elk Valley Disposal in BraxtonCounty, West Virginia. With its automatedtwo-pump filtering and monitoring systems, the facility can safely and efficiently workyear-round.In fact, natural gas is the earth’s cleanestand most efficient hydrocarbon. Emissions fromits combustion contain approximately 50%less carbon dioxide than coal and up to 30%less than oil products. It’s also one of the mostefficient supplies for power. On average, 50% ofthe natural gas piped into a natural gas powerplant is converted to electricity, compared toonly 33% in coal- and nuclear-fueled powerplants. Furthermore, natural gas used for powergeneration creates 85% less nitrogen oxides,50% less particulate matter, 97% less sulfurdioxide and 100% less mercury than a comparablemodern pulverized coal-fired plant.PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENTWe realize the way a product is produced canbe as important as the product itself. Protectingthe beauty and resources of the areas where weoperate is our goal from the day we spud a welluntil the day a depleted well is plugged and thewell location restored to its natural state. The company evaluates every potential drillsiteto identify any possible operational or environmentalissues, ensuring that the best possiblelocation is selected. This kind of careful planningallows Chesapeake to utilize multiwell padsites todrill up to 12 wells on a single location, greatly reducingthe impact of the company’s drilling andproduction activities. Using the latest horizontaland directional drilling technology, we are alsoable to place wells at a safe distance from homes, schools and businesses. As an industry leader, Chesapeake mergesexperience with state-of-the-art technology tocreate remarkable sites like its Elk Valley Disposalfacility in Braxton County, West Virginia. Designedby Dave Gum, Chesapeake’s Production Foremanfor the Victory Prospect in the Marcellus Shale, thefacility is one of the most advanced and efficientproduced water disposal facilities in existence, according to the West Virginia Department ofEnvironmental Protection (DEP), and has becomea popular tour stop for the DEP in showing off abest-practice approach to produced water.“All of Chesapeake’s sites are good, but Iwas really impressed with this one,” said JamiePeterson, West Virginia DEP EnvironmentalResource Specialist and Permitting. “It’s a modelof how an underground injection control facilityshould be done.”Serving as a DEP example is not the onlyway Chesapeake collaborates with environmentalorganizations. An active member of theEnvironmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) NaturalGas Star Program, the company has hosted anumber of events at its Oklahoma City headquarters, including most recently a ProducersTechnology Transfer Workshop. In addition, wework closely with a number of nonprofit andgovernment organizations such as the AmericanClean Skies Foundation, The Nature Conservancy, the Groundwater Protection Counciland various environmental organizations todesign and pursue best practices. We also strive to educate the public andpolicymakers about our industry and the environmentaladvantages of natural gas. Chesapeakeis a proud member of the newly formedAmerica’s Natural Gas Alliance (ANGA), which iscomprised of 34 of America’s top independentnatural gas producers. We also host regular townhall meetings in our operating areas to meetwith our neighbors and address their questionsand concerns about natural gas and environmentalissues. We strive to provide clear, accurateanswers about natural gas and its productionand consumption on our websites at www.askchesapeake.com, www.hydraulicfracturing.comand www.cngnow.com. We also feature extensive, timely information about our industry and companyon our corporate website at www.chk.com.26 CHESAPEAKE ENERGY CORPORATION

PROTECTING OUR PEOPLEChesapeake approaches the safety of our employeeswith the same intensity we have fordrilling for natural gas. We work hard to ensurethat all of our employees are properly educatedto meet the company’s high safety standards.Last year we offered approximately 500online and instructor-led operational trainingsessions. Additional training and field safetydrills ensure that employees in every phaseof our drilling, completion and production activitiesare knowledgeable of and committed tosafe work practices.Chesapeake’s intranet is an important toolused in our efforts to promote company-widesafety, and employees receive regular safetyalerts about potential issues. In addition, quarterlynewsletters highlight pertinent environmental, health and safety news and recognizethe safety achievements and milestones of ourfield employees.Like most companies in our industry, Chesapeakeemploys a number of contract servicecompanies for specialized tasks and projects. The safety of these contract employees is alsoof great importance to us, and we begin byselecting contractors with a safety commitmentthat matches our own. In 2009, we beganusing ISNetworld to objectively manage contractorprequalification requirements for safetyand health programs. This allows us to makeeducated contractor selections by reviewing apotential contractor’s history and performance.“Contractors are an extension of the company, and it’s important that we only partner withorganizations that demonstrate the same highstandards of safety and operational excellencethat we do,” said Greg Dykes, Senior Director –Corporate EHS Compliance. At Chesapeake, protecting employees’safety and health does not end at the jobsite. We encourage our employees to live healthylives through a number of amenities and incentiveprograms. The company’s distinctivehealth promotion program, Living Well, allowsemployees to earn cash rewards for maintaininga healthy, active lifestyle throughout theyear. In addition, on-site health screenings areoffered at least once a year at all office locationsand Wellness Dollar benefits pay for preventivescreenings and care. The company’s corporate campus includesthe 72,000-square-foot Chesapeake FitnessCenter, which features a swimming pool; volleyball, basketball, racquetball and squashcourts; a rock climbing wall and a variety ofcardio and weight lifting equipment. They includeestimates of natural gas and oil reserves,The SEC requires natural gas and oil companies,in filings made with the SEC, to discloseproved reserves and, beginning with filingsreporting year-end 2009 reserves, permits theoptional disclosure of probable and possiblereserves. While Chesapeake has elected not toreport probable and possible reserves in its filingswith the SEC, we have provided estimatesin this report of what we consider to be our“total resource base.” This term includes ourestimated proved reserves as well as “riskedand unrisked unproved resources,” whichrepresent Chesapeake’s internal estimatesof volumes of natural gas and oil that are notclassified as proved reserves but are potentiallyrecoverable through exploratory drillingor additional drilling or recovery techniques. Our estimates of unproved resources are notintended to correspond to probable and possiblereserves, as defined by SEC regulations, are by their nature more speculative thanestimates of proved reserves and accordinglyare subject to substantially greater riskof being actually realized by the company.Cert no.
