Introduction2008-758Air Liquide group, with its headquarters in Paris, France,is one of Europe’s larger multinational companies witha consolidated turnover of € 11.8 billion in 2007Air Liquide Welding, with a sales turnover of ~ € 700 million, isrepresented throughout the world by individual ALW companies. These are involved in many different areas of OERLIKONproduct design, development and application. The research anddevelopment centre, AL CTAS, is located in Paris and is thelargest privately owned centre for welding R&D. This facilitatesthe rapid transfer and implementation of important innovationsand advances in welding technology throughout the whole ofthe OERLIKON global network. Through utilising in this way thestrengths and experience of the network, OERLIKON continuesto maintain its position and international reputation for innovativeleadership at the forefront of advanced welding technology inboth welding consumables and processes. With this background, OERLIKON has generated a provenhistory of supplying welding products on an ongoing basis forthe most demanding and critical applications. Nowhere has thisrecord of success been greater than in the offshore oil and gasindustry. Right from its very beginning,OERLIKON has been involved in the fabrication of almost allfixed and mobile structures for the extraction of offshore oil andgas in the cold waters of the European basin and now servesthe industry globally.Over this period, OERLIKON has continued to work closely withoil companies, construction contractors and fabricators indeveloping and supplying welding consumables, equipment andprocesses capable of meeting the stringent mechanical propertyspecifications and increasingly the demands for enhancedwelding productivity. The results of this process of ongoing innovation and productdevelopment are demonstrated by the unrivalled range ofOERLIKON welding consumables, specifically tailored for theoffshore oil and gas construction industry. Welding consumablesare accompanied by extensive ranges of welding and cuttingequipment, manual through to fully automated installations, flame and workplace products.2

MMA consumables for the offshore industry2008-759MMA weldingOerlikon TENACITO manual metal arc electrodes are designed tooptimise toughness and productivity in the fabrication of structuralsteels while retaining the excellent levels of operating characteristicsrequired for positional welding during on-site constructionThe TENACITO range is characterisedby the following features:ToughnessThe TENACITO range of MMA electrodes for offshoreapplications are all fully basic electrodes of the EX018-H4 typewith nominal 110% efficiency. They are the result of many yearsof systematic development and high Charpy values at -40 °Cto -60 °C and Crack Tip Opening Displacement toughnessat -10 °C are readily achieved at realistic arc energies. The TENACITO range of electrodes is made on high purity steelcore wire, very low in residual and impurity elements to ensureweld deposit cleanliness and optimum mechanical properties. The smaller sizes

Cored wires for the offshore industryOERLIKON flux-cored wires for MAG welding comprisethe FLUXOFIL and CITOFLUX high performance product rangesFLUXOFIL and CITOFLUX wires are produced in ISO certifiedgroup manufacturing plants2008-767FLUXOFIL cored wires are manufactured using a processsimilar to the production of a solid wire and results in a seamlessflux-cored wire with a number of product advantages:Low Hydrogen PotentialFLUXOFIL wires have a hydrogen potential of ~4ml H 2 per 100gdeposited weld metal when used straight from the carton or storewith no re-conditioning. This is very low and can be considered by thewelding engineer to be an excellent safety factor. A reduction in preheatmay also be possible meaning more cost effective fabrication.Feeding CharacteristicsThe solid sheath provides uniform mechanical properties around thewire circumference and hence the wire feeding is smooth withoutkinking or spiralling. The production annealing ensures close controlof the wire hardness and this in turn reduces wear of the wirefeeder and cable hose assembly.Stability in WeldingFLUXOFIL wires are coppered in exactly the same way as solidwire. Current transfer from the torch contact tube to the wire isthus improved.CITOFLUX cored wires were recently introduced to theOERLIKON product range, manufactured using a folded striptechnique. This range of wires includes, rutile, basic and metalcored wires, bringing another balance of operating characteristics, mechanical properties and deposition rate to the OERLIKON rangeof cored wires, to meet all fabrication requirements.Deposition rateCITOFLUX rutile cored wires feature enhanced filling of the fluxcore, which results in increased current carrying capacity, thusincreasing welding speed and hence deposition rate.Key productsA selection of key products is shown below. Submerged arc wires and fluxesfor the offshore industryOERLIKON’s agglomerated submerged arc welding fluxes,in combination with the OERLIKON range of solid wires, have achieved worldwide recognition as the first choice forquality submerged arc welding2008-760ToughnessConsistent CVN and CTOD even at deep sub-zerotemperatures through the right combination of wire and flux.WeldabilityAs well as the consistent ability to deliver the highest levels ofmechanical properties, OERLIKON fluxes have stable arcrunning characteristics together with excellent slag detachability.TechnologyOERLIKON submerged arc wire specifications are designed toincorporate the state of the art technology and hence thehighest levels of weld metal toughness are generated for thealloy type. In addition, as new steels and applications aredeveloped so special wires are designed and introduced to therange.Low Hydrogen PotentialOERLIKON fully basic fluxes and semi basic SAW fluxes aredesigned and manufactured to give a low hydrogen potentialunder the most demanding conditions. This minimises the risksof weld metal hydrogen (chevron) cracking in the welding ofthick structural steel sections even after exposure of the flux toatmospheric moisture during recirculation. These fluxcharacteristics are supported by the OERLIKON DryBagpackaging system, which is particularly relevant for use in highhumidity climates.ReproducibilityConsolidating the metallurgical rationale for OERLIKONagglomerated fluxes , the grain size distribution andagglomerate strength ensure reliable recirculation characteristicsand consistent chemistry. This is most important whensubmerged arc welding.ProductivityOERLIKON can input into the optimum choices of the numberof wires, head geometry and wire size for a given application, inorder to optimise productivity in a given application. Improveddeposition rates can be attained without sacrificing weld metaltoughness, operability or bead profile.QualityAll OERLIKON agglomerated fluxes are produced in ISOcertified group manufacturing plants, under the most stringentquality control conditions.Key productsA selection of key products is shown below. DRYBAGAbsolute watertight control for submerged arc fluxes.DRYBAG an innovative packagingsystem from Oerlikon reduces costs, time and energy2007-539The needs of industryThe fabrication specifications of oil companies and powersuppliers usually require a guaranteed very low level of SAW fluxmoisture in order to attain a diffusible hydrogen level of lessthan 5 ml/100 g in the deposited weld metal. Thesespecifications clearly stipulate the conditions required toguarantee compliance with this requirement.2007-474DRYBAG :a packaging solution from our R&D teamsThe research and development and the production departmentsof the Air Liquide Welding group, have developed an innovativenew packaging system for Oerlikon submerged arc weldingfluxes: DRYBAG a fully moisture proof packaging system makingany requirement for flux conditioning unecessary, resulting inhigh-quality welds even in the most hostile ambient conditions.DRYBAG is made of an advanced composite foil, speciallydeveloped for vacuum packaging applications. For enhancedsecurity, a partial vacuum is produced in the DRYBAG during thepackaging of the welding flux. The low-pressure serves as anindicator for the security of the packaging. Oerlikon DRYBAGoffers similar levels of security as packaging in metal drums, butis more cost effective. DRYBAG is available in 25 kg or larger,800 or 1000 kg formats. The 25 kg-DRYBAG can be stored, transported and palletised in the same way as regular 25 kg bagsand the larger formats have an integral pallet.Advantages■ No risk of moisture ingress, even during transcontinental ormaritime transport and following long-term storage in adverseconditions.■ No risk from ambient humidity, even in extreme climaticconditions.■ No need to re-condition the flux before use.■ This new packaging solution enables fabricators to reduce therisk of hydrogen induced cracking.■ No requirement for detailed control of temperature or humidityduring storage, thereby saving time and energy costs.■ Improved, simplified handling and storage compared to existingsolutions using metal drums, again reducing costs.Oerlikon : Satisfied customers are our primary objectiveAllseas choose Oerlikon DRYBAG OP 121TT submerged arc fluxAllseas' dynamically positionedpipelay vessel SolitaireThe Swiss-based Allseas Group S.A. is one of the majoroffshore pipelay and subsea construction companies in theworld, operating specialised vessels – which are designedin-house. The largest pipelay vessel in the world, Solitaire, has set new standards in the pipelay industry. The S-laycapacity with a holding force of 1050 tons, enables her to laythe heaviest pipelines. Welding processes SAW (rotating pipe)and MAG welding (fixed pipe) are used on board. For storage of the submerged arc flux at sea DRYBAGpackaging is the chosen solution to avoid moisture pick up.Also for the SAW-wire, special packing in aluminium foil hasbeen developed to avoid corrosion.Using these solutions, Allseas is assured of low hydrogenwelding consumables during welding.14
