Case Study: Mr & Mrs HughesBob and Helen Hughes bought their18th century Georgian house in 2007and spent a year on renovations.Being keen to minimise both energy usageand bills, they installed loft, underfloor andwall insulation as well as double glazing..To reduce the need for increasingly expensiveelectricity from the grid, the Hughes chose tore-roof their home with 36 C21e solar electricroof tiles. Ordered via their local buildersmerchant, the Hughes’ builder installed thetiles after a morning’s training from Solarcentury.Producing 1,500 kWh per year, the systemprovides a large element of the home’s electrical needs, saving 850kg of C0 2emissions from entering the atmosphere each year.Bob comments: “Whywouldn’t you install solarelectric roof tiles? It’s anenvironmentally sound andeconomically efficient thingto do. As we were spendingon renovation anyway, werealised the cost of the solarwas comparable to otherhome improvements.””He adds: “We’re reallyhappy to have installed thetiles and feel they add to theappearance of the house.We really want to inspireothers to do the same.”
