Visionary Leaders Scholarships award merit,allevi<strong>at</strong>e student debtPastor David Spong and his family understand <strong>the</strong>challenges new pastors face when <strong>the</strong>y gradu<strong>at</strong>efrom seminary with student loan debt.“My daughter is a seminary gradu<strong>at</strong>e who is paying<strong>of</strong>f student loans. It can be difficult. We knowth<strong>at</strong> no one gets rich on a pastor’s salary. Th<strong>at</strong> iswhy we’re concerned about o<strong>the</strong>rs gradu<strong>at</strong>ing fromseminary with debt,” Pastor Spong said.When <strong>the</strong> family sought a way to honor PastorSpong’s parents, Bernard (Augustana, class <strong>of</strong> 1939)and Doris, <strong>the</strong>y decided to fund two <strong>of</strong> LSTC’s newVisionary Leaders Scholarships. Using a gift fromhis parents’ est<strong>at</strong>e, Pastor Spong and his family arefunding a half-tuition Dean’s Scholarship and aone-quarter tuition Servant Scholarship for first yearM.Div students <strong>at</strong> LSTC.Helping students choose LSTCEleven first-year, three Ph.D., and three doctor <strong>of</strong>ministry LSTC students are receiving VisionaryLeaders Scholarships for <strong>the</strong> 2011-2012 academicyear. LSTC has, historically, provided a large number<strong>of</strong> need-based scholarships. Wh<strong>at</strong>’s new about <strong>the</strong>Visionary Leaders Scholarships is th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>y are meritscholarships awarded to students whose gifts andgoals make <strong>the</strong>m a particularly good m<strong>at</strong>ch for <strong>the</strong>type <strong>of</strong> ministry form<strong>at</strong>ion LSTC provides.Allevi<strong>at</strong>ing debtStudent loan debt carried by seminary gradu<strong>at</strong>es hasbeen a growing problem over <strong>the</strong> last 15–20 years.LSTC has long been aware <strong>of</strong> gradu<strong>at</strong>es sometimesturning down a call because <strong>of</strong> financial reasons.Several years ago, <strong>the</strong> admissions staff discoveredth<strong>at</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> prospective students who were veryinterested in LSTC decided to go to o<strong>the</strong>r seminariesbecause those o<strong>the</strong>r schools were able to <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>the</strong> students a better scholarship package, allevi<strong>at</strong>ing<strong>the</strong>ir need to borrow money for seminary.Mark Van Scharrel, vice president for advancement,proposed cre<strong>at</strong>ing <strong>the</strong> Visionary LeadersScholarships to provide several levels <strong>of</strong> merit- andneed-based support for students based on merit. Hewas also aware <strong>of</strong> two studies rel<strong>at</strong>ed to student debtshowing th<strong>at</strong> students <strong>of</strong> color gradu<strong>at</strong>e from ELCAseminaries with 50% more debt than <strong>the</strong> average ELCAseminary gradu<strong>at</strong>e. The Advancement Office cre<strong>at</strong>ed<strong>the</strong> Hope Scholarships specifically for students <strong>of</strong> color.“We wanted to remove as many financial barriersas possible for prospective students who feltLSTC was <strong>the</strong> best seminary for <strong>the</strong>m,” Van Scharrelsays. “We worked closely with our colleagues inadmissions to find out how many scholarships <strong>the</strong>ythought would make a difference and <strong>the</strong>n we tested<strong>the</strong> idea with some <strong>of</strong> LSTC’s donors. The responsefrom donors was truly amazing. Everyone we talkedto understood <strong>the</strong> need and many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m are providingscholarships for students this year.”Hope ScholarshipsMany students <strong>of</strong> color in ELCA seminaries willbecome <strong>the</strong> first in <strong>the</strong>ir family to be a Lu<strong>the</strong>ranpastor. “Seminary students who come from familieswith pastors seem to have a better network <strong>of</strong> financialsupport from <strong>the</strong>ir congreg<strong>at</strong>ion or througho<strong>the</strong>r Lu<strong>the</strong>ran organiz<strong>at</strong>ions and th<strong>at</strong> reduces <strong>the</strong>irKa<strong>the</strong>rine Tuttle, receiveda Dean’s ScholarshipRuby Burwell-Lee received aHope ScholarshipElizabeth Lowry received aDean’s ScholarshipAngela Storer, Justin Tigerman and Rachel Brockerreceived Presidential Scholarships15
