The Monty/November 2011
Regular readers of "The Monty" will no doubt have noticed that Heat Treat Shows, Exhibitions
and Seminars would appear to be almost continuous these days with our coverage of shows in
Dusseldorf, Germany, Moscow, Russia, Beijing, China and Wiesbaden, Germany with the largest
North American show, "ASM" coming up next week (and let's not forget that we will be having
some coverage of the recent show in Thailand). What makes this rather odd is that the death of
large exhibitions was forecast a number of years ago because of the high costs of these events
and the advent of the internet and E-mail. However forecasters of the death of these events
forgot one important detail - people like interacting with real people and nothing can replace the
feeling of actually touching and playing with new technology. Being able to meet your customers
and competitors in a neutral setting, swap information, gossip a bit and see all the industry
suppliers in one location is an experience almost impossible to replace (and let's not forget that a
road trip can be a heck of a nice change from a daily routine). So while logically shows do not
make a great deal of sense on one level on the other hand the experience is – priceless!
Warmest Regards,
Thread Industrial/Taiwan. Some years ago several of the North American furnace
companies were swamped with new orders for mesh belt furnace lines from US and
Canadian based fastener manufacturers. The world is constantly evolving and while there is
still a substantial amount of fastener manufacturing in North America a great deal ended up
in Asia in particular Taiwan. With this background Damian Bratcher, of SSI introduces us to
one of the foremost fastener manufacturers in Taiwan, Thread Industrial and Sun Yung a
giant when it comes to continuous furnaces for the fastener industry in Asia. October
"On the left is Mr. Tony Yang of San-Yung Furnaces, in the middle is Mr. Michael Yen,
Chairman, Thread Industrial Co. and on the right is Mr. Damian Bratcher of Super Systems
Inc.. Thread is a high-quality fastener manufacturer who has been in business for close to
25 years. We were at the facility for installation and commission of the new mesh belt line
being installed by San-Yung at Thread Industrial. San-Yung is the leading supplier of
continuous furnaces for the fastener industry. It is a state of the art furnace for a state of
7th Annual South East Asia Heat Treat Seminar. October 21st CHS Asia Hosted the 7th
Annual South East Asia Heat Treat Seminar in Thailand. While still a relatively small event
this has grown substantially in a short period of time as you can tell from the number of
well known US and European suppliers who invested a great deal of time and money to
attend this event. According to the organizer of this event, Randy Simmons of CHS Asia
(new furnaces, installations, upgrades and rebuilds) one of the reasons the event is such as
success is (and we will quote Randy) "The attendance was good because free admission,
food, beer, women and whiskey seem to lure Heat Treaters In." October 28/2011
Applied Process Inc./AFC-Holcroft. So have a look at the world's largest batch IQ
furnace. Having seen this during construction I can say that it is truly a sight to behold. If
you scroll down to the drawing at the end of this press release you will see what I assume is
this furnace beside a standard 36" X 48" X 36" UBQ furnace which gives you an even better
idea about the size of this unit. October 27/2011
“Applied Process Inc. and AFC-Holcroft Announce the World’s
Largest Integral Atmosphere Batch Furnace - By the way, it’s got a salt quench. Livonia,
Mich., Oct. 25, 2011 - Applied Process Inc., a worldwide leader in Austempering technology,
www.themonty.com

has collaborated with AFC-Holcroft, a leading international manufacturer of industrial
thermal processing equipment, to produce a Monster Parts furnace for a new plant that
Applied Process is establishing in Oshkosh, Wisc. The new plant is in response to growing
demand for Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI), Carbidic Austempered Ductile Iron (CADI),
Austempered Gray Iron (AGI), Austempered Steel and Carbo-Austempered Steel
components, and for applications that consolidate many steel or aluminum weldments,
forgings, castings or assemblies into a single, large, elegant ductile iron design not
previously feasible.
The unique Universal Batch Quench-Austemper (UBQA) design will have a working envelope
of 84” x 96” x 56” (2050mm x 2438mm x 1422mm) and a maximum gross load of 20,000
lbs. (9,090kg). The unit integrates a controlled atmosphere furnace with an oversized
nitrate/nitrite salt quench, with transfer from the furnace accomplished safely, automatically
and under atmosphere.
According to Bill Disler, AFC-Holcroft’s executive vice president, “This design was a
collaborative effort between AFC-Holcroft’s engineering and production staff and the
engineering and plant services staff at the Applied Process companies.” John Keough, CEO
of Applied Process, stated, “This furnace is fully capable of all of the processes that Applied
Process’ customers have come to use and trust, with the added capability of running very
large and/or heavy steel, iron, and Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI) parts.”
Designed for Large Loads. The furnace will employ
strategically placed natural gas fired radiant tubes, and is
designed to meet the stringent temperature uniformity
requirements of various new international standards. The
furnace will utilize an endothermic gas atmosphere with
natural gas addition. The heat and atmosphere will be
uniformly circulated in the furnace with the aid of four alloy
fans. A raised pier design in the furnace will allow both the
sight lines necessary for efficient radiant heat transfer and the
smooth flow of atmosphere circulation. This design aspect is critical to the efficient
processing of such a large load. Applied Process Chief Operating Officer John Wagner
indicated that, “For us, endothermic gas, manufactured from an endothermic generator, is
the way to go. It is less costly and more stable than nitrogen-methanol systems.
Endothermic generators with modern injection systems, digital controls and dewpoint
sensors, with proper preventive maintenance, can run trouble-free for years at a time. And
parts run in this unit, like all of our UBQA lines, will not have the surface decarburization
seen on parts run in other systems.”
For this massive furnace a special direct gear drive handling system, was developed by AFC-
Holcroft. The system is designed to smoothly accelerate and decelerate the load quickly,
without the rough, jerking motions that can plague conventional transfer systems.
Industry-leading Quench Systems.
AFC-Holcroft UBQA furnaces are known for their quench speed and uniformity. The unique
quench tank and housing design, coupled with proprietary agitation and water addition
techniques, give UBQA units quench severity that far exceed typical salt quench systems.
Further, the oversize quenches specified by Applied Process allow for less than a 15°F
(8.3°C) temperature rise for a maximum design gross load. The Monster Parts quench
system’s operating temperature range is 360°F-725°F (182°C-399°C).
www.themonty.com

The Monster Parts system allows for nearly 100 percent salt reclamation using minimal
energy. Because the system is atmosphere-to-salt, the quench salt is not contaminated by
drag-out of high temperature Austenitizing salt, as is typical of salt-to-salt processes. The
salt-rich water from the primary wash can easily be rectified, filtered and then the salt can
be 100 percent reclaimed using proprietary (green) technology.
The new heat treating facility, Applied Process’ Monster Parts Division, will be housed in a
purpose-built, 15,000 sq. ft. (1,400 sq. meters) facility in Oshkosh, Wisc. It will be serviced
by a 10 ton crane for bulk, top loading and unloading, and a protected truck dock for
conventional loading.
John Keough further stated, “This furnace line will give Applied Process a unique opportunity
to work with engineers, buyers and the management of manufacturers to develop new,
cost-effective conversions of large parts (we like to call them Monster
Parts). The line also consolidates weldments and assemblies into
efficient, single-piece designs--not to mention the fact that it will
increase our capacity to process conventional Austempering work.”
Applied Process’ Technical Sales Group Leader, Vasko Popovski, added,
“The new furnace means the engineering community is now freed from
the overwhelming reliance on large-scale steel components in favor of
less costly and lighter ADI components. Such components would most
likely be American-made, and as such allow US firms to compete more
readily with expensive imported steel forgings and castings.”
Champion Furnace Co Inc. /California, USA. A sign of the times is the fact that most
suppliers and furnace builders to our industry are staying very busy these days. Champion
Furnace Co., Inc. in CA is a good example. The company reports they have rebuilt and
installed six vacuum furnaces, installed a new Ipsen Titan, and installed two complete
cooling water systems this year alone and are in the process of rebuilding another vacuum
furnace. These are for customers such as 3V Fasteners, Qualtek MFG, Delta Heat Treat and
MSAerospace. Doing all this work in a year might not sound like a lot but one you consider
it's being done by one man and a couple of part time sub contractors it's impressive. In fact
business is so good they have started moving into a larger building to keep pace with the
demand. Happy days are here again? I think so... October 26/2011
The Full Monty. In a recent news item we mentioned how "DOKKA Fasteners" was
setting up a new plant in Auburn Hills, Michigan, USA which includes a brand
new heat treating department consisting of batch IQ furnaces. It turns out
that the supplier of these furnaces is "Ipsen" with their new ATLAS
platform.
"GKN Driveline", a 252-year-old British industrial company just completed
their purchase of two North American "Getrag" plants including Getrag's
Newton, NC facility which is one of the largest captive vacuum carburizing
companies in North America. Getrag in Newton started down the path of
vacuum carburizing a number of years back with two systems and very
recently ordered a third vacuum carburizing system. Both GKN and Getrag
provide components for the automotive power transmission industry. This
was a $440 million acquisition on the part of GKN.
The upcoming "ASM Show" in Cincinnati is probably going to be the best
attended in many, many years. A sign of the strength of the captive and
commercial heat treating markets.
"Thomas Kreuzaler/VP Seco Warwick Group Thermal Products". We mentioned this
treatment and a broad experience with the corresponding process and installation
technology. His worldwide contacts will help to strengthen SECO/WARWICK's position in this
market. Prior to joining SECO/WARWICK Group, Mr. Kreuzaler got his experience on
managing positions in such companies as: ThyssenKrupp Anlagentechnik GmbH, Linde Gas
AG, Ipsen International GmbH, Abar Ipsen UK Ltd, Bodycote Wärmebehandlung GmbH and
IHI furnace and machinery Ltd."
"ZF Transmission/Fountain Inn, SC". A couple of weeks back we had a rumor about
Ipsen landing an order for $8 million USD worth of pushers from a customer in North
America. We now understand that the customer is ZF Transmission, in Fountain Inn, SC.
who purchased (3) Ipsen Pushers for FNC Work.
"ALD Thermal Treatment/Port Huron, Michigan, USA". Our buddy Robert Peters,
president of ALD Thermal Treatment in Port Huron, Michigan was recently interviewed about
how the company is doing these days. This is what he had to say; "Robert Peters, president
of ALD Thermal Treatment, said his facility at 2656 24th St. in Port Huron has expanded in
the past year -- adding square footage and employees. The company does heat treating for
automotive, aerospace and commercial parts. The volumes of the company's current
contracts have increased in the past few months, Peters said. The Port Huron facility's
revenue has more than doubled since October 2010. Michael Pode, vice president of sales at
ALD Thermal Treatment, said about 80% of the company's business comes from General
Motors. "As GM's growth has accelerated, so has our business opportunity with them," he
said. Two additions totalling 12,000 square feet are being made to the company's main
building, Pode said. In May 2010, the company expanded into a building north of the main
facility when equipment and some employees were relocated from a South Carolina facility
that closed. Growth mostly has been in the manufacturing process connected to the
automotive industry, Haynes said. But other manufacturing segments -- including medical,
aerospace and defense -- have been "picking up." October 25/2011
Ipsen Launches HybridCarb®, a New Process Gas
Recycling Technology
(October 24, 2011 Cherry Valley, IL) – Ipsen, Inc.
announces the release of its new greener process gas system,
HybridCarb®, an alternative to Endothermic and
nitrogen/methanol generators for atmosphere furnaces. Rather
than simply burning off excess gas, HybridCarb provides precise
process gas control to conserve gas consumption. The process
gas is then recycled, reconditioned and reused, increasing
www.themonty.com

efficiency up to 90%, which translates to a reduction of more than 40 tons of CO2 per year,
or the environmental equivalent of planting 220 trees each year!
HybridCarb delivers immediate cost savings without the hassle of major changes in
operations. Unlike other similar process gas generators, the process gas is not directed to
the burn-off system; instead, after transferring carbon into the load, the process gas is
guided back through the HybridCarb system to be reconditioned and recycled in the furnace.
HybridCarb is intuitive and operator friendly. The compact, roll-in design fits almost
anywhere, takes up very little space, and installs in just hours. HybridCarb connects quickly
and easily using Ipsen’s patent pending Trunk Module. Plus, it is significantly less expensive
to operate compared to the cost of running and maintaining an endothermic generator or
nitrogen/menthol gassing system. HybridCarb is environmentally friendly and cost effective.
It improves hardness and uniformity with less heat and atmosphere loss because of its
recirculating design. With enhanced furnace pressure regulation, HybridCarb allows for less
natural gas consumption and a shorter burner recovery time. There is less chance of IGO
formulations. For more information on HybridCarb visit www.IpsenUSA.com/HybridCarb, or
visit our booth 2123 at the upcoming ASM Heat Treat 2011 show and see HybridCarb and
our other innovations." October 25/2011
Specialty Steel Treating/SSI. Specialty is another commercial heat treater who has seen
tremendous growth over the past few years. October 24/2011
"Specialty Steel Treating Control Upgrades at East Granby. Super Systems has completed a
controls retrofit project utilizing a centralized three door enclosure at Specialty Steel
Treating of East Granby, Connecticut this month, marking the most recent partnership in a
successful history between the two companies. Committed to incorporating innovative
solutions to its thermal processing, Specialty Steel Treating determined that SSi’s controls
and SuperDATA system was the best technology fit for the East Granby facility. Thirteen
furnaces were integrated into the 3 door enclosure for Specialty Steel Treating utilizing
Series 9000 controls and SCADA software, including quench timing and alarming. “We trust
the reliability and quality of the products designed by Super Systems,” said Justin
Kollmorgen, at Specialty Steel. “The furnace controls and software for this job were installed
in about five days, which goes to show the high level of service and dedication that Super
Systems provides.” The electrical enclosure included all the software and controls to
automate an atmosphere batch furnace line. SSi programmable recipe controllers are being
used to manage sophisticated processes for batch integral quench and tempering cycles.
This upgrade provides the latest in control technology with redundant data storage of
process data at the SuperDATA PC and on each controllers HMI interface. SSi’s SuperDATA
15th International Exhibition on Heat Treatment, Beijing, China. I doubt very much
that anybody needs proof that the Chinese heat treating market is one that can't be ignored
but if you need one more example the recently concluded show In Beijing is a perfect
example. Virtually every single furnace manufacturer from around the world was in
attendance as you can see in the photos below. October 24/2011
Lufkin Industries/Lufkin, Texas,USA. Scrolling down a few news items you will come
across a report and pictures about a fire at captive heat treater Lufkin Industries in Texas.
We are very pleased to report that while there was a great deal of "sound and fury" involved
with this news report at the end of the day (like most of these incidents) the fire was put
out very quickly with foam and there was little if any damage to the building and associated
equipment and the heat treat department should be up and running again shortly. October
Dokka Fasteners/Auburn Hills, Michigan, USA. It is rather rare these days to see
companies based outside of North American setting up new manufacturing facilities in
Michigan so this is a rather welcome news item. The press release below was issued earlier
this year but we now understand that the company invested in batch IQ furnaces and that
they are getting closer to having the heat treat department completed. Generally you would
expect bolts to be processed in some form of continuous furnace however based upon the
size of the bolts (and keep in mind that these are for supporting windmills) the decision was
made to go with batch IQ furnaces. October 20/2011
"The Würth Group, a $10B USD global company comprised of over 400 companies in 80
countries and a world leader in providing assembly components, is pleased to announce the
establishment of Dokka Fasteners Inc, a state-of-the-art hot forming fastener
manufacturing facility that will be located in Auburn Hills, Michigan. Specializing in
providing product for the North American wind energy market, Dokka’s fully automated
manufacturing process will be the first of its kind in the U.S., and will replicate the high tech
process found in the Dokka Norway facility. The Dokka Norway facility has been an industry
leader in providing products to the Wind Energy Market for over two decades. After a highly
detailed review of incentives from Illinois, Missouri, Indiana and Michigan, the clear
advantage to Dokka was the overwhelming support of the state of Michigan, Oakland
County, and the City of Auburn Hills. With Michigan developing into an epicenter for wind
energy technology and manufacturing, and coupled with the exponential growth of the wind
farms throughout Michigan, Auburn Hills is the ideal location for Dokka Fasteners Inc. to
support the North American wind market. The Würth Group will invest over $20MM USD into
the facility, which will feature robotic hot forming manufacturing of high quality bolts from
M24 through M72 up to 675 mm in length, as well as studs and threaded rod in sizes M16
through M80 and lengths to 2300 mm. Dokka Fasteners Inc. will feature state-of-the-art inhouse
heat treat capabilities to allow Dokka to control the quality and integrity of each
fastener produced. Dokka Fasteners Inc. will be managed by a team of long time fastener
industry professionals with a hundred years of combined fastener manufacturing and
Combustol Equipamentos/Brazil. We go to Brazil for this news item. Combustol we
believe is the largest new furnace builder in Brazil and the press release explains about a
belt furnace they are are building for Metalpo which is involved with powdered metal parts.
The name "Cremer" is mentioned in the release, this is a German furnace builder who has
sold a number of top end sintering furnaces into North America. October 20/2011
"New furnace brings more quality and productivity to steam treatment. Combustol
Equipamentos is building a new continuous belt type furnace that will be used by Metalpó in
the steam treatment process of sintered parts. The project was developed by the German
company Cremer, with which Combustol keeps a relationship and technical exchange. The
expectation is that it starts to operate in December of this year. From the four well type
furnaces currently working at Metalpó, two will be deactivated due to the high maintenance
cost, being replaced by the new equipment. According to the Technical and Commercial
Metallurgy manager of the Equipment division, Donizetti Ribeiro, the innovative
technological concept of this equipment project (continuous feed of parts process) can be
applied in the future by Combustol, enlarging its products portfolio. The Production manager
of Metalpó, Marcelo Iasi, explains that the new furnace will bring an important increase of
quality to the steam treatment process – a coating layer application of iron oxide (Fe3O4) in
the sintered parts. “The company will experiment gains of productivity and process stability,
reducing the intermediate stocks”, he states. This will happen because the new furnace is
directly interconnected to Metalpó production lines, making it be fed of new parts in a
continuous way. “Currently, the furnace feeding is done in batches with predefined
quantities of parts, in a system called ‘batch’. With the new furnace, the operation will be
continuous and uniform. The operators will act more directly in the control and monitoring
of the operation”, he says." For further information: Flavia Mariotto Marketing Coordinator
Lufkin Industries Fire. According to the Lufkin Daily News Lufkin Industries suffered a fire
yesterday morning. Lufkin in Lufkin, Texas is a large manufacturer of gears and gearboxes.
It boasts quite a large, impressive in house heat treat department. "A pillar of black smoke
caused by an oil vat fire caught the attention of motorists driving by Lufkin Industries
www.themonty.com

Tuesday morning. The fire broke out around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in a heat treat facility used
for cooling and hardening metal that faces Feagin Drive. Lufkin Industries Vice President
Brian Gifford said the employees quickly evacuated the building and that no one was
injured. “We don’t know much yet about how it happened because it is still under
investigation, but we do know we’re proud of our employees because they got everybody
out of there and accounted for,” Gifford said. “We will be investigating the damage to see
when employees can reoccupy the building.” After being contacted about the blaze by Lufkin
Deputy City Manager Keith Wright, who happened to be driving by, the fire department
responded to the scene. Wright said he got out of his car to flag an AN&R train to stop,
preventing the railroad crossing gates from blocking the fire trucks’ path. “As the fire trucks
arrived, the AN&R train was coming down the track. I was afraid the gates would close and
they wouldn’t be able to get in, so I just waved at the train to stop,” he said. “It was just an
engine and one car, so it worked out well. Had it been a Union Pacific train, I don’t think
they would have been able to stop.” Lufkin Fire planned to remain on the scene throughout
the day Tuesday to monitor hot spots." October 19/2011
Bodycote/Langenselbold, Germany. I was truly honored last week when Jan Elwart
(manager of 77 Bodycote plants around the world) offered a personal tour of his
Langenselbold plant (which is located near Frankfurt). This commercial heat treating facility
was built as a "greenfield" site approximately 12 years ago and is impressive to say the
least. In common with many Bodycote facilities it concentrates on a few core competencies
in this case vacuum hardening, Marquenching, Carburizing and Ferritic Nitro Carburizing.
With typical German efficiency it is top notch and well organized-an example that springs to
mind is that the plant has two closed loop cooling systems in case there is a failure with
one. With roughly 50 employees this would certainly be considered a larger than average
Wiesbaden. Wiesbaden Germany HT Show. HK 2011 AWT is now in full swing. For readers
outside of Europe this is an annual heat treat show dedicated largely to the German heat
treating market hence the fact that the exhibitors are largely German companies and most
of the attendees are also from German captive and commercial heat treats. The show itself
and the number of exhibitors is impressive (I would compare it to the ASM show in North
America) and typically attendance has been good however on this the first day of the show I
have to say that the number of attendees was not impressive. The show is well organized,
at a great location but unless a lot more attendees show up in the next two days I would
have to think that many of the exhibitors will not be pleased. What is exciting though is the
mood and optimism of everybody here. To date I have yet to speak with a heat treater or
industry supplier that is not swamped with work and not expecting that 2012 will again be a
great year for business. An example would be Ipsen (new furnaces-photo below). The
company has had a record breaking sales year in their German, Chinese and US
manufacturing plants and feels that this will continue. In the photo immediately below you
see from the left; Geoffrey Somary (Ipsen USA), Marc Angenendt, VP Operations Germany
and Gord Montgomery. In the second photo you see an individual who I have to say
impresses me, Mr. Hugo Burgmaier, President and owner of SHU in Ulm, Germany. Starting
from scratch 32 years ago with some salt equipment Hugo has built the company into what
I still consider the largest single location commercial heat treater in the world (yes they do
have two locations close to each other but the Ulm facility with over 500 employees we
would rank as the largest in the world). Joining Hugo in the photo is on the left Gunther
Braus of Dibalog and on the right Gord Montgomery. More photos and information from the
show will be available over the next few days. October 13/2011
"MIDWESTERN MANUFACTURING COMPANY BUYS AFC-HOLCROFT ‘BUILT-FOR-
STOCK’ UBQ FURNACE, RECEIVES DELIVERY IN JUST 3 WEEKS. October, 2011 – A
large manufacturing company located in the Midwestern region of the United States, has
purchased an AFC-Holcroft “Built for Stock” UBQ (“Universal Batch Quench”) furnace, size
36”-48”-36”, with delivery taken only 3 weeks after order date. As part of the “Built for
Stock” program, this furnace was already fully fabricated, ready for paint, shipping and
installation only 3 weeks from date of order. The UBQ furnace is one of AFC-Holcroft‟s most
popular products, due in part to its modularity and flexibility, and is available in a
standardized form for fastest delivery, or customizable to meet individual customer
specifications. The modular design of the UBQ furnace will enable it to integrate with other
existing batch furnaces already in the customer‟s plant. This brand-new stock UBQ furnace
not only met the customer‟s processing requirements, but was already on the floor, fully
built. Knowing this, the customer was able to respond quickly to increasing order volumes
without having to wait for the typical build schedule. Mike Neumann, Technical Sales
Specialist at AFC-Holcroft, commented, “AFC-Holcroft understands that lead times are
important, and our exclusive „Built for Stock‟ program can greatly accelerate the delivery
date. Our customers can get the unit into production quickly, with no compromise
whatsoever in design or fabrication quality.” Neumann added, “No one else in the industry
can supply a complete, fabricated new furnace this quickly.” As part of AFC-Holcroft‟s
commitment to the industry, work has already begun on another “Built for Stock” furnace.
AFC-Holcroft‟s goal is to keep a stock UBQ furnace and endothermic generator in the most
popular sizes available and ready for shipment, or well within the build cycle for fastest
delivery. “Built for stock” equipment can be seen on the company ‟s website , www.afcholcroft.com/quick-delivery."
Natural Gas Pricing. We ran across a very interesting article about natural gas pricing in
the US. What we get out of it is that natural gas pricing is slowly increasing due to the
approach of winter however there would appear to be little if any reason to expect major
changes in pricing. Nickel also is remaining fairly constant these days meaning that
electricity pricing is probably the largest issue for heat treaters. October 11/2011
"Natural gas spot prices at most market locations across the country this past week initially
declined and then began to creep upwards as natural gas use for power generation
increased. The upward trend was halted yesterday, as prices at nearly all points retreated,
possibly due to forecasts for considerably colder weather. After declining from $3.78 per
million British thermal units (MMBtu) last Wednesday to $3.72 per MMbtu on Thursday, the
Henry Hub spot price increased to $3.92 per MMBtu on Tuesday and closed at $3.88 per
MMBtu yesterday. At the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX), the October 2011
contract rose from $3.73 per MMBtu last Wednesday to a high of $3.83
per MMBtu on Tuesday and closed out the month at $3.76 per MMBtu
yesterday. The November contract, which decreased from $3.82 per
MMBtu last Wednesday to $3.80 per MMBtu yesterday, moved into the
near-month position. Working natural gas in storage rose to 3312 billion
cubic feet (Bcf) as of Friday, September 23rd, according to EIA's Weekly
Natural Gas Storage Report (WNGSR). The natural gas rotary rig count
remained steady at 912 as of September 23, holding at an 8-month
high, according to data reported by Baker Hughes Incorporated. The oil
rig count, on the other hand, rose by 9 to 1,071. Prices at most trading
locations oscillated over the report week, declining between last
Wednesday and the weekend, then increasing through Tuesday and
subsequently dipping on the last day of the report week. Although
prices were up and down over the week, most closed higher than the
preceding week. The Henry Hub price declined from $3.78 per MMBtu
last Wednesday to a low for the report week of $3.72 per MMBtu on
Thursday, increased to $3.92 per MMBtu on Tuesday and then declined,
closing at $3.88 per MMBtu yesterday. Prices at Transcontinental
Pipeline's Zone 6 trading point for delivery into New York City fell from
$4.03 per MMBtu last Wednesday to $3.91 per MMBtu on Friday,
jumped to $4.20 per MMBtu by Tuesday, and then closed at $4.13 per
MMBtu yesterday. Similarly, the Chicago citygate price declined from
$3.88 per MMBtu last Wednesday to $3.80 per MMBtu on Thursday,
then climbed to $3.98 per MMBtu Tuesday, only to reverse direction and fall to $3.91 per
MMBtu yesterday. Natural gas demand for power burn increased across the country during
the report week. According to data from BENTEK Energy Services, LLC, gas burn for power
increased overall by 11.1 percent, driven by increases in the Northeast and Southeast.
Power burn in the Northeast rose by 28.0 percent, while the Southeast registered a 7.5
percent gain. Total demand was up by a much more modest 1.2 percent over the week.
Supply remained flat, with production up by only 0.1 percent. Most of the increased demand
was satisfied by imports from Canada, which increased by 5.1 percent. LNG imports rose by
17.8 percent and averaged 463 million cubic feet (MMcf)/day, while exports to Mexico
jumped 32.2 percent and averaged 1460 MMcf/day over the week."
What The Heck Is Happening/Aerospace Heat Treating. In a recent column we asked
how it was possible that the economy in general is languishing while at the same time
commercial and captive heat treaters are doing very well. We approached Mr. Bob Hill,
President of Solar Atmospheres of Western P.A. for his thoughts (Solar Atmospheres is
quite likely the largest commercial vacuum heat treater in North America with 3 locations
and is almost undoubtedly the largest commercial Titanium processor in North America.
Titanium is of course very closely tied to the Aerospace Industry). Bob just returned from
the International Titanium Conference in San Diego, CA, USA during which a number of very
knowledgeable individuals from the Titanium/Aerospace Industries offered their forecasts
about the direction of these industries-these forecasts go a long way towards explaining
why captive and commercial heat treaters serving these industries are busy and should
remain so for the near and medium term.
It should be noted that this conference had a record number of attendees (1,161) with over
80 talks presented. The Distinguished Speaker this year was John Byrne VP of Aircraft
Materials and Structures Supplier Management. For the 787 alone John is in charge of
over 500 suppliers in over 13 different countries. He was very proud to be present in Japan
as Boeing executives handed over the most technologically advanced airplane ever built to
ANA. John did admit to the audience that they “probably” pushed the new technology too
far with the 787 and it has been painful. However they are now set for the future. They are
already having conversations now within Boeing on utilizing the composite vs metal
advantages (specifically the performance of the wings) on the 777. I find the comments
fascinating and greatly encouraging for the future and can understand why companies such
www.themonty.com

as Solar are making such enormous investments into furnaces for processing Titanium.
October 7/2011
Mike Metz’s President of VSMPO Tirus USA had these thoughts about the two giants in
the Commercial Airline industry, Airbus and Boeing:
- Currently the best build rates in 15 years.
- 33,500 new projected aircraft over the next 30 years.
- The majority of the above number earmarked for Asia
- 40% of the above number are replacements of aging aircraft- Many parked aircraft in the
desert > 20 years old
- Major driver for this growth- is fuel prices. DC 9’s and MD 80’s are very inefficient and
have to be replaced.
- All US airlines are profitable except for American.
- Worldwide profits are $14 billion- Doing well.
- Boeing breakdown- 737 NG- 31 per month to 42 per month over 3 years 737 Max- New
engine 2014 777- 7 per month to 9 in 2 years 787- 2 per month to 10 in
2013
- Airbus breakdown- A320- 30 per month to 42 in 2012 A320 – new
engine 2016 A380- 2 per month going to 3 per month 2012 A350- 800
aircraft enter service in 2015 (to compete with the 787)
- Because of these growth rates there will be a tremendous increase in
titanium demand
- Titanium mill products = 25,000 metric tons this year- to keep up with
demand 40,000 metric tons will be required in the future
- THE FEELING IS THERE IS NO BUBBLE! Too much inertia is pushing
these unprecedented builds upward (of course pending another
catastrophic event- e.g. 9/11)
Dawn Hinkton CEO of RTI International addressed the military
sector:
- Not as positive as the commercial aircraft projections due to a shift in
technology, shift in the battlefield, and a shift in the geo political procurement
- Good news- Globally in 2010 there was 31 million pounds for military. Projected 41 million
pounds for Y 2015
www.themonty.com

- Bad news- US will see a -14% reduction and CHINA will rise to 145% increase in titanium
usage for military. China has a $100 Billion increase on defense spending!
Rich Harshman CEO of ATI on Engines
- Of course with the commercial segment so strong there will be very strong demand
efficient power plants
- Ti usage more and more prevalent in the front of the engine (blades, discs ,compressors,
vanes, and fasteners)
- These more fuel efficient engines burn hotter- ergo more Ti.
Jim Buch VP of TIMET addressed the Industrial markets
- In 2008 Ti shipments double over 5 years. During the recession in 2009 this Ti market was
down 29%. 2010 it was back up by 43%. 2011 projected to be up 31%!
- Increases in titanium usage is primarily dependent upon 1. desalination plants 2. oil and
gas (the deeper you go the hotter and more sour is the well), Medical (baby boomers and
Chinese masses getting more hips and knee implants), and nuclear remains strong.
Wiesbaden, Germany Heat Treat Show/October-14, 2011. The largest dedicated
German Heat Treat show will be held next week in Wiesbaden, Germany and we will be
attending and giving you updates about what is new in the European Heat Treating market.
As a prelude to this let's have a quick look at the commercial heat treating industry in that
country. The largest organization for commercial heat treaters is IHT (Industrieverband
Härtetechnik- Industrial association Heat Treatment) and in 2010 this had 111 members out
of a total of roughly 175 separate commercial heat treaters meaning that the organization
represents almost 70% of the total number of commercial shops in Germany. The total
sales for commercial heat treats in 2009 (probably a bad starting point since it was such a
terrible year for business) was estimated at 850 million Euros or roughly $1.13 billion USD
at today's exchange rate. If we divide this number by the total number of heat treats we
arrive at an average of roughly $6,460,000 USD in annual sales per shop (and by the way
the total number of employees is about 6300). What this tells us is that the average
commercial heat treat in Germany is double the size of the average operation in North
America and for that matter is far larger than that in other areas of the world. From
personal experience I would not disagree, some of the operations in Germany are absolutely
enormous such as SHU which we would consider the largest in the world and most offer
more expensive processes such as Ion Nitriding, more vacuum and more Vacuum
Carburizing which would up the sales figures. Another factor is that environmental
regulations are far more stringent in Germany than most other parts of the world meaning
you see fewer "down and dirty", smaller operations. More to come. October 6/2011
Advanced Heat Treating Solutions. Last week we had a news item about how there had
been a fire at commercial heat treater Advanced Heat Treating Solutions in Mississauga,
Ontario, Canada. It would appear that there was an exaggeration on the part of both the
fire department and the local media and that there was no fire. Turns out that it was excess
smoke from a tempering furnace due to residual oil from the wash. The flames being
emitted out of the Integral Quench Furnace and from the Generator were considered as fire.
The doors were closed for 1 hour when the smoke got accumulated out of the chimney and
was mistaken as fire. I have to add that 90% of the time we have run across news reports
about fires in heat treats the local reports have been exaggerated beyond believe. October
Ed Liguori/Scarrott Metallurgical Co. The heat treating industry is really at the end of
the day a game of musical chairs. Most individuals who enter the industry do not leave it
and at most people move between different companies. For instance Ed Liguori who is a
good man and has worked at a couple of heat treats in CA has left commercial heat treater
Scarrott Metallurgical Co., http://www.scarrott.com/ after a number of years as General
Manager. At pretty much the same time Jose Catano who has spent a number of years with
commercial heat treat Bodycote has now joined Scarrott as Quality Control Manager.
Scarrott is a very cool operation-not large but top end vacuum heat treating and brazing.
The photo below was taken late last year at Scarrott and you see Ed on the right. We have
heard rumors that he is entering the consultant field but this is just a vague rumor. October
"NEW TUTORIAL OFFERS TIPS FOR OPERATING A VACUUM FURNACE UNDER
HUMID CONDITIONS. "Souderton, PA. 10/3/11- Solar Atmospheres and Solar
Manufacturing have jointly released a new technical paper on operating a vacuum furnace in
humid conditions. This educational resource offers insight and practical solutions based on
decades of vacuum heat treating knowledge and experience. Humidity, especially paired
with high temperatures in the summer months, poses a significant challenge to the vacuum
heat treating process. Water vapor contained in humid or wet air can accumulate inside the
furnace chamber and hot zone causing production metal parts to discolor or oxidize. The
outcome is unacceptable, especially for critical components like aerospace, electronic, and
medical implant materials. This tutorial explains how the amount of water vapor contained
in a specific volume of air is a function of relative humidity, air temperature and other
factors. In addition to an in-depth understanding of the topic, readers can obtain
suggestions on how to improve final product appearance and minimize possibility of
contamination when faced with high humidity. The tutorial can be accessed at
What the Heck Is Happening? A theme we have touched upon before is the enormous
disconnect between the economy in general and heat treating in particular. Since we last
mentioned this just a few weeks back the gap has only widened. It has become very
commonplace to hear captive and commercial heat treaters complaining about businesscomplaining
that they have so much work that routine maintenance is falling by the
wayside, new projects are not getting the attention they deserve, there is no room to store
the work coming in and employees are overworked. Boeing has now shipped their first long
awaited 787 with over 800 more on the books, GM, Ford and Chrysler are all announcing
excellent sales of new vehicles and the oil and gas industry keeps humming along on all
cylinders. On the other side of the coin we are overwhelmed with doom and gloom reports
about a double dip recession, unsustainable government debt, unemployment rates that
refuse to drop and trepidation, if not complete terror about what happens when Greece
defaults (what a world-ten years ago I wouldn't have cared less what happened to a
socialistic, relatively small country half way around the world). So which is the real story?
Doom and gloom or manufacturing which continues to defy the predictions? Perhaps heat
treaters learned their lessons in 2009, namely reduced debt, leaner operations and a focus
on profitable jobs as opposed to any jobs? Or perhaps there is less heat treating capacity
www.themonty.com

available meaning more demand than supply? Or just perhaps governments have very little
actual control over the economy? I for one would argue that it is a combination of all three;
lessons learned in 2009, a shortage of capacity and governments that long ago forgot that
industry is what produces wealth not governments with the result that manufacturing is
generally forgotten except as a token when it comes to policies. October 4/2011
Nickel Pricing. Along with electrical costs, natural gas pricing, labor costs and health costs
(at least in the US) nickel is also included in one of the major costs for captive and
commercial heat treaters because of its enormous effect on high temperature alloy
components in heat treating furnaces. The chart below tells you where nickel pricing has
been and gives you an idea where it is going. All good in our opinion. October 4/2011
Things to Know. Metals India http://www.metalsindia.com/ one of the larger family
owned commercial heat treaters in India has very recently placed an order with a European
Manufacturer for a new Ion (plasma) nitriding system. Ion Nitriding is still relatively
uncommon in India so this is a great step forward in technology for the company. One of
the larger heat treat shows in Germany will be held in Wiesbaden, Germany (just west of
Frankfurt) Wednesday, Oct. 12 thru Friday, October 14. This is largely dedicated to the
German market but we at "The Monty" will be attending and giving you an update about
the quality of the show. You can find a list of the attendees at
http://www.technologiebroker.de/fileadmin/dateiablage/HK/2011/fbs2011.pdf
Natural gas pricing in North America is staying fairly steady but what about electricity
pricing? Up, up, up. If you want details one of the larger providers in the US, Duke Energy
tells us about the anticipated price increases (15% to cut a long story short) at
http://www.duke-energy.com/news/releases/2011080503.asp SC that are upcoming. For
NC we have this http://www.duke-energy.com/news/releases/2011070101.asp and in
general we have this http://www.duke-energy.com/news/2011.asp What this all means is
that for heat treaters using gas, things should remain stable, for heat treaters using
electricity your bills will keep going up. And last but not least we have this very interesting
but lightweight news item. Mr. Bob Balow founder and owner of Accu-Temp Heat Treating
in Mount Pleasant (commercial heat treating) is a very famous guy. It would appear that
Bob is an inventor of sorts and a number of years back invented a custom spaghetti fork,
which has been so successful that recently Bob had 900,000 hits on a YouTube video of him
eating spaghetti with his famous spaghetti fork-I am impressed. October 3/2011
