Recentcooperation with both foundation equipmentmanufacturers and customers have led to newapplications of the Tadano Mantis crane withlead systems and impact hammers. IcandaCorporation based in Laval, Quebec has recentlyrented a 77 ton Mantis Model 15010from Cropac Equipment, Mantis’ dealer inQuebec and Ontario, along with 78 feet ofBermingham Foundation Solutions L-15 verticaltravel leads, a Bermingham B-21 DieselHammer and an HHH-12 hydraulic spotter.Icanda will be utilizing the Mantis Crane andBermingham lead system to drive pipe pilesin varying batter configurations for a bridgefoundation near Chicoutimi, Quebec. The Mantis 15010 was identified as an idealpiling crane by Icanda because of the heavydutyconstruction of the crawler crane coupledwith the flexibility of the telescopic boom, theintegrated lead and hammer controls that areoffered as a standard option on the crane andthe fast self-erecting capabilities of the craneand pile driving system. The pile driving leadinterface option on the crane includes an integratedcontrol console, spotter lugs, hydraulicvalving and quick coupler panel. Includedcontrol functions for lead and spotter winchesand cylinders to adjust batter, lead height, pilegates and hammer starter and throttle controls.Tadano Mantis and Bermingham FoundationSolutions have cooperated together forthe past two years to develop a vertical travellead (VTL) piling system optimized for theModel 15010 crane which can offer piling atradii up to 34’-4” and batters up to 4:1 in alldirections with piles weighing up to 5,200 lbs.The crane and VTL system was displayed in apile driving configuration at ConExpo 2011 inLas Vegas and then as a drilling system – withan Atlas Copco QL120 down hole hammerat the recent ADSC show in San Antonio inMarch.Upon arrival at the job site, the Mantis cranequickly goes to work unloading and self-erectingits counterweights, then assembling anderecting the vertical travel lead system, whichquickly attaches to the pre-installed boom tipadapter. The crane, lead and hammer systemis completely assembled and erected in undera days time and is ready to go to work drivingpiles. The initial job that Icanda will be usingthe crane for will consist of driving 40, 14-inchand 16-inch piles that will be spliced to a maximumlength of 93 feet. The piles will be driveninside of coffer dams below grade at battersset up by the hydraulic spotter, so no templateis needed for the piling job. As quickly as thepiling system can be rigged up, it can also bedismounted from the crane. Thus the Mantiscan effectively go from a piling crane to a liftcrane in very little time. Tadano Mantis cranesare suited for much more than lifting – thecranes have full load chart pick-and-carry capabilities, full power booms that can telescopethe entire load chart, high powered Cumminsdiesel engines and performance matched hydraulicsallow for both superior travel performance,as well as the ability to perform multifunctioncrane operations and to power auxiliarytools. Other standard options well suitedtoward foundation applications include controlledfree-fall winches, a 14,000 lb-ft torqueboom mounted auger drive, and a FOPS forthe standard cab.Tadano Mantis has worked with foundationcontractors in support of adapting all sizes ofMantis cranes for various foundation jobs andapplications. Over the years a variety of leadsystems for either pile driving or drilling alongwith auxiliary hydraulic circuits have beenadapted to Mantis cranes from 18 ton through100 ton capacity. Serving the foundation industrywith telescopic boom crawler cranesdesigned for the heavy duty applications seenby foundation contractors remains a key aspectin the present and future developmentprocess for Tadano Mantis Corporation. n26 PIC Magazine • June 2012
