Volunteer RecognitionCommitment and dedication...the keys to our successDuane Bates understandsthe value <strong>of</strong> volunteeringThe <strong>Appraisal</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Canada</strong> (AIC) has many determinedand dedicated volunteers who make the work <strong>of</strong> the<strong>Institute</strong> possible and help move the pr<strong>of</strong>ession forward inprogressive and fundamental ways. Despite being underheavy commitments both pr<strong>of</strong>essionally and personally,AIC members continue to serve in countless ways. For thisissue <strong>of</strong> Canadian Property Valuation, we interviewedAIC member, Duane Bates, AACI from Abbotsford, BC.Duane Bates, AACI is one <strong>of</strong> the many volunteers helping the <strong>Appraisal</strong><strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Canada</strong> (AIC) to thrive as a pr<strong>of</strong>essional association. WhileDuane was still a Candidate, a 2003 invitation from a member <strong>of</strong> his AICchapter executive to attend the local meeting marked the start <strong>of</strong> his volunteerinvolvement with the <strong>Institute</strong>. As Duane remembers <strong>of</strong> that meeting,“Little did I know that this was an AGM, and, when the time camefor nominations to the chapter executive, I was nominated. I decided tolet my name stand and ended up joining the executive by acclamation.At that point, Duane was in his seventh year with BC Assessment, andhe had been an appraisal supervisor for two years.
