healthbriefsThe Question of Root Canalsand Your HealthDr. Hal HugginsOur western society is riddled with a variety of “degenerativediseases” and many accepted health proceduresare suspected as their causes.Dr. Hal Huggins has become controversial for standingup for health and wholistic dentistry, and is currently devotedto generating public awareness about the consequences ofhaving dead teeth – called root canals – in one’s mouth. As early as 1906 the Mayo Clinic in conjunction with Dr.Weston Price, DDS, MS, announced that root canals were ahaven for disease-producing bacteria. Since then, using DNAanalysis, Dr. Huggins has identified at least 90 different organisms that can havedetrimental effects on the human body. The most common diseases associated with root canals are heart and circulatorydiseases, auto-immune conditions such as chronic fatigue, common diseasesof the joints, arthritis and rheumatism, followed by diseases of the brain and nervoussystem. Before you make the decision to crown a dead tooth, check into further articleson this subject or contact a “wholistic dentist” in your area, who will look atyour whole health profile in helping you to make dental decisions. For more information go to: http://is.gd/ConsciousLiving.Does Your HouseSupport Your Health?Rick shows you how your house can be• CLEAN – from Mold, Odor, Dust• EFFICIENT – Energy Use• HEALTHY – Indoor Air Quality• SAFE – Furnace, Heat Pump, Duct• GREEN – Sustainable ChoicesRick Baylessbrings you hisskills asa Mold Expert,College Instructor, HealthyHomes Coach, and HomeEnergy Consultant.Schedule your Home HealthCheck-up and Energy AuditCall 828-243-5192A Healthier Homewww.RickBaylessHealthyHome.comOne-MinuteRelaxation TechniquesStress, even minor, can decrease your immune system’sability to do its work. globalbriefsNews and resources to inspire concerned citizens to work togetherin building a healthier, stronger society that benefits all.Cut AbuseGovernment Steps In to Curb GreenwashingThe U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has issued updatedgreen marketing guidelines intended to stop advertisers frommaking deceptive or unqualified claims about products beingenvironmentally beneficial or eco-friendly, called “greenwashing”.The FTC said that few products deliver the far-reachingenvironmental benefits that consumers associate with suchclaims, and they are nearly impossible to substantiate. The revision is the first since 1998, when phrases like“carbon footprint” and “renewable energy” were relatively new.Using input from consumers and industry groups, new sectionsaddress the use of carbon offsets, “green” certifications and seals, and renewableenergy and renewable materials claims. Marketers are warned not to make broad, unqualified assertions that their products are environmentally benign or eco-friendly.Arthur Weissman, president and CEO of Green Seal Inc., a nonprofit environmentalcertification organization based in Washington, D.C., says, “We hope thatthere will be enforcement to help rid the marketplace of the many less-than-credibleseals and greenwashing that exist.”The new guidelines are not rules or regulations, but general principles thatdescribe the types of environmental claims the FTC may find deceptive. They donot address use of the terms “sustainable”, “natural” and “organic”.Source: The Christian Science MonitorShell GameTurtles Facing Extinction Get HelpThe Turtle Survival Alliance Foundation (TSA) isopening a facility to house some of the world’smost endangered freshwater turtles and tortoisesnear Charleston, South Carolina. The 50-acreTurtle Survival Center will maintain living groups,or assurance colonies, of many species facing anuncertain future in the wild. The center will house 20 species of freshwaterturtles and tortoises ranked “criticallyendangered” by the International Union for theConservation of Nature. Nine are also on the Turtle Conservation Coalition list ofthe world’s most endangered tortoises and freshwater turtles.According to TSA President Rick Hudson, “No group of animals is undergreater threat or faces a higher risk of extinction than freshwater turtles and tortoises.”The center will focus on species that have little chance of being recoveredin nature because of habitat loss and intensive hunting pressures. Some species have undergone such dramatic declines that without intervention, their extinction is imminent. After theUnited States and Canada signedthe initial Great Lakes Water QualityAgreement in 1972, many localgovernments banned detergentscontaining phosphorus and the algaeproblem faded, but it has returned inthe past decade.Analysts note that while thepractice of planting crops withoutplowing the ground may help preventerosion, it leaves high concentrationsof fertilizer phosphorus in the upperlayers of soil, where it easily runsoff into waterways. A task force ofacademic and government experts hasrecommended more than 50 helpfulpractices, including providing fundingand technical assistance for phosphorusreduction projects; authorizingstate regulators to require pollutionreduction measures in stressed watersheds;and working with farmers andequipment manufacturers to developfertilizer application methods thatavoid runoff.Source: EarthKnowledge.net12 www.wncmountainsna.com

Theeffort in sustainability has been bolstered bya government grant, support from foundationsand small donations that pay for staffing, marketing and even a Repair Café bus.“In Europe, we throw out so manythings,” says Martine Postma, a former journalistwho initiated the idea after attendingan exhibit on the benefits of repairing andrecycling. “It’s a shame, because the thingswe throw away are usually not that broken.”“I think it’s a great idea,” says Hanvan Kasteren, a professor at the EindhovenUniversity of Technology, who works onwaste issues. “The social effect alone isimportant. When you get people togetherto do something for the environment, youraise consciousness, and repairing [something]gives a good feeling.”The forum harbors two other positiveaspects: It’s a way for handy retirees and othersto ply and mentor skills that may havebeen dormant and also saves families thecost of buying a new product, a commonoccurrence as repair shops vanish alongwith handymen that make house calls. The Repair Café Foundation provideslists of tools, tips for raising money, marketingmaterials and helpful insights for interestedgroups. Simmerup a batch of hearty soup and then sitback and watch it disappear,” says KenHaedrich. “Kids love soup,” he maintains,“because it’s warm and soothingand slurpy.” A former navy Seabee andauthor of the classic Soup Makes theMeal, Haedrich is a father to four grownchildren. “Besides being kid-friendly,soup has other advantages,” he continues.“It can be made ahead of time, andyou’ll probably end up with leftovers—a bonus for busy families.”Soup is also a great way to get kidsinterested in vegetables and in cooking.“Starting at around 2 years old, kidswant to be in charge of what they eat, just like they want to choose their ownclothes,” says Beth Bader, author of TheCleaner Plate Club. So Bader and herdaughter Amelie started entertainingfresh ways of looking at food. At thegrocery store or farmers’ market, forexample, they played “I Spy,” as in “Ispy something purple that tastes like....Amelie could pick any vegetableand we’d figure out how to cook it athome—often in soup,” says Bader.Chicken broth-based soups mayalso boost immunity and help battle thesniffles, according to researchers at theUniversity of Nebraska Medical Center.Dr. Stephen Rennard and his colleaguesfound that properties of chicken souphelp soothe sore throats and ease othercold symptoms.Soups made with vegetablebroths likewise offer anti-inflammatoryproperties and comforting goodness, maintains green living expert AnnieB. greenlivingFRACKING WRECKSAMERICA’S BEDROCKby Sandra SteingraberUnder the misleading banner of clean and green, the globalnatural gas rush is on, and nowhere more so than in theUnited States. We are literally shattering America’s bedrockto bring methane out of the Earth and consuming enormousquantities of precious fresh water to do so, without any clearknowledge of the health or environmental consequences. Dueto economies of scale and required infrastructure, fracking is anall-or-nothing proposition, and each state decides its own fate. The Marcellus Shale forms a 600-mile-long basementfoundation for communities spanning New York, West Virginia,Pennsylvania and Ohio. As the largest natural gas deposit in thecountry, it has become ground-zero for high-volume, slickwaterhydraulic fracturing, or fracking. Many more states are equallyvulnerable (see GaslandTheMovie.com/map).In a two-to-200-foot-thick bedrock layer up to a milebelow Earth’s surface, the shale and its captured methane, uranium, mercury, arsenic and lead have remained locked inplace for millions of years. Above it lie drinking water aquifers.Prior to the 21st century, capturing methane gas bubblesdispersed within such a horizontal formation, instead of a verticalwell, was deemed uneconomical and labeled unrecoverable. Now,modern drills can bore down steel piping, some portions encasedin cement, and direct pressure-packed explosions of up to 10,000pounds per square inch of water, sand and chemicals into the rock, fracturing it. Next, hundreds of chemicals are injected to reducefriction (thus the term slickwater) so that the fracking fluid can floweasily. The mixture includes acids, rust and scale inhibitors and pesticidesto kill microbes, plus sometimes gelling agents, petroleumdistillates, glycol ethers, form aldehyde and toluene. The result is that gas flows back up the borehole along with30 to 60 percent of the injected cocktail of water and chemicals. The rest is left behind. Fracking a gas well once requires 2 to8 million gallons of fresh water, 10,000 to 40,000 gallons ofchemicals and at least 1,000 diesel truck trips. Wells can befracked multiple times before they run dry.Between 34,000 and 95,000 wells are envisioned for NewYork State alone, according to Cornell University EngineeringProfessor, Anthony Ingraffea, with 77,000 likely over the next 50years. While New York residents are watching the result of frackingin other states and have elected a temporary moratorium on fracking,Pennsylvania has issued thousands of permits since 2004.Continued unknowns stir debate. Meanwhile, scientistsacross leading institutions are certain of five universal impacts.First, fracking industrializes rural landscapes, clearing andfragmenting vital woodlands and wetlands. Second, frackingbrings urban-style air pollution to the rural countryside. Third, accidents happen, necessitating the evacuation of surroundingcommunities. Fourth, fracking makes huge volumes of Earth’slimited fresh water disappear forever. Fifth, sooner or later, thegas will run out, while the environmental damage remains.Known and Unknown Dangers. Beyond thesecertainties lie questions. Drilling proponents may claim thatthere have been no confirmed cases of drinking water contaminatedby fracking. Yet in Pavillion, Wyoming, residents noticeda few years ago that their water was yellow, cloudy and oily, bubbled and smelled like chemicals. Some people felt sick.A joint investigation by the U.S. Environmental ProtectionAgency (EPA) and the Agency for Toxic Substances andDisease Registry found petrochemicals— including diesel fuel, benzene, cyclohexane, methane, propane and ethane, plustraces of arsenic and a microbe-inhibiting pesticide—in 20water wells. The EPA recommended that residents not drinktheir water. Turning on a fan while showering to avoid possiblemethane explosions was also suggested.Fracking enjoys special exemptions from many regulations—theClean Water Act, Clean Air Act, Superfund Act andNational Environmental Policy Act—that govern other types ofindustrial activities. Fracking also gets a pass on federal rightto-knowlaws, because natural gas operations do not reporttheir air and water emissions under the EPA Toxics ReleaseInventory. A special amendment to the 2005 Energy PolicyAct grants fracking exclusion from the Safe Drinking WaterAct, which authorizes the EPA to regulate all injection of toxicchemicals into the ground. Thus, a drilling company doesn’thave to disclose the formulation of its fracking fluids.Eco-Horrors and EconomicsBiologist Theo Colborn and her research team at The EndocrineDisruptor Exchange report that of the 353 chemicals testedas presumed ingredients of fracking fluid, 60 percent canharm the brain and nervous system, 40 percent are endocrinedisrupters and one-third are both suspected carcinogens anddevelopmental toxicants. What should we do with this lethal fluid—a million ormore gallons with every wellhead? The trend, say gas industryservice providers like Halliburton, is to recycle it, but flowbackwater gets more poisonous with every reuse. At some point, thishighly concentrated toxic liquid still has to be disposed of viadesignated underground wells or municipal sewage-treatmentplants or else it’s clandestinely dumped. Then there’s the lure of fracking’s economics. In manycases, a homeowner can receive $5,000 per acre, plus 1216 www.wncmountainsna.com

to 20 percent royalties, from leasingland to a gas company. The MarcellusShale may be worth a trillion dollarsand possibly provide enough naturalgas to supply the nation’s consumptionfor six years, according to the U.S.Energy Information Administration’smost recent estimates. (It’s unknownhow much gas is recoverable or howoften wells may need to be refrackedto stimulate production.)No study of the cumulative impact offracking on public health or agriculture, including its full lifecycle greenhousegas emissions, has been conducted; it’san economic gamble and a bona fideenvironmental crime.A Community Speaks Out.In New York’s Tompkins County, 40percent of the land acreage covering theMarcellus Shale is leased to gas drillers.Local feelings are mixed. Some peoplejust wish the whole practice would goaway. Some find fracking such a vileand preposterous idea that they don’tbelieve it will really happen. Others, seeking personal gain or believing thatit’s inevitable, plan to “ride the tiger,”hoping for greater future oversight. At a recent community meeting, candidatesfor mayor and the village board declaredtheir unified opposition to fracking.Soon afterward, at a packed town meetingon fracking at the village library, someonenoted that a nearby community had successfullyturned away frack waste truckedin from Pennsylvania that was headed toan old well for disposal. An elderly mandeclared passionately, “We have to beready to lie down in front of the trucks.”Take a stand at Tinyurl.com/FrackMedia,Tinyurl.com/FrackingMap and Tinyurl.com/FrackAction (scroll to petitions).Note: Find films at GaslandTheMovie.com; and Tinyurl.com/FilmPromisedLand.Biologist Sandra Steingraber, Ph.D., is theacclaimed author of Living Downstream, now also a documentary film, and HavingFaith, on the threat of environmentaltoxins to infant development. healingwaysBe SupplementSAVVYHow to Choose Wiselyfor Optimal Healthby James OcchiogrossoAccording to the U.S. Office of Dietary Supplements, nearlyhalf of us regularly use some kind of dietary supplement, including vitamins, minerals and botanical herbs. While mainstream mediahave recently targetedsupplements with alarmingcoverage about their value and safety,James J. Gormley, former editor ofBetter Nutrition and author of User’sGuide to Brain-Boosting Supplements, helps set the record straight. In an open letter on the Citizens forHealth website, at Tinyurl.com/Letter-Rebuttal, he contends the worst partabout misleading articles is that theycan scare readers away from benefitsthat safe supplements might offer. Henotes that although nothing in life is100 percent risk-free, supplements areinherently benign, while pharmaceuticaldrugs frequently have unhealthyside effects.Controversy over supplementsseems to arise primarily from misinformation.Following are some guidelinesand resources to help ensuretheir wise use and maximum benefit.Supplements VersusPharmaceutical DrugsNatural health practitioners reportthat their clients tend to mentallygroup pharmaceuticals and supplementstogether. However, pharmaceuticaldrugs are typically synthetic,single-action chemicals that targetone body system or organ, causing itto alter its function; they mask symptoms, but do not cure disease. Onthe other hand, the goal of vitamins, minerals and plant-derived supplementsis to provide nutrients to helpa troubled body system by supportinghealth and healing. Some confusion occurs becausemany pharmaceutical and supplementmanufacturers take advantageof people’s desire for a one-bulletsolution, which rarely exists in eithersource. Stephen Lawson, administrativeofficer of the Linus PaulingInstitute, at Oregon State University, maintains that, “Lumping togetheritems like vitamins, minerals andbotanicals, each of which can haveprofoundly different physical profilesand effects on the body, is dangerousand misleading.”Who Needs Supplements?Everyone can benefit from taking theright supplements to address specifichealth needs. Numerous studies attestthat many diseases, especially inolder adults, are caused by a deficiencyof certain vitamins or minerals. Forexample, pernicious anemia, commonin adults over the age of 60, is due toa long-term deficiency of vitamin B 12.The condition often proved fatal untilresearchers discovered that takingsuch supplements could effectivelytreat it.Another common nutritionaldeficiency disease among aging adultsis osteoporosis, a loss of bone mineralsthat often leads to fractures. Itsprimary cause is chronic deficienciesin calcium and vitamin D levels. The latter is crucial for absorbingcalcium—a primary mineral for buildingbone. According to the NationalInstitutes of Health, older adults arelikely to spend more time indoors, plus, even when they are exposed tothe sun, their skin does not synthesizevitamin D as efficiently as when theywere younger.Serious nutrient deficienciesrarely cause fatal outcomes, but deficienciesof certain vitamins and mineralscan deter organs from optimalfunctioning. General medical testsdo not always show minor shortfalls, and practice shows that supplementingwith the appropriate vitamin ormineral can often both eliminatesymptoms and resolve an underlyingproblem.Choosing HelpfulSupplementsDetermining which supplements canbest meet individual needs requiressound information. First, determineif a perceived condition could becaused by a vitamin or mineral deficiency, and then identify the bestdosage. It is also vital to know how asupplement might interact with anycurrent medications. Most vitamin and mineral supplementsare safe when used properly, but always consider asking an experiencedprofessional for guidance; this isespecially true for botanicals, becausesome manufacturers make unsupportedclaims based only on their ownresearch. Generally, nonprofit organizationssuch as the Linus Pauling Institute(lpi.OregonState.edu) that do not sell supplementproducts, present unbiased information.18 www.wncmountainsna.com

Final WordAlthough conflicting information continuesto circulate, abundant scientificevidence verifies that commonsenseuse of vitamin and mineral supplementsis safe and usually helpful. Therecommendation is to take enough, but not too much, of a deficiencyspecificsupplement, along withnutritious foods, in order to achieve anormal balance.A 2009 report by the U.S. NationalPoison Data System indicatedthat the number of serious adverseevents that year from the use of vitamins, minerals, amino acids or herbalsupplements was extremely low, withno related U.S. deaths. Many natural healthcare experts, including naturopaths, nutritionistsand dieticians, conclude that supplementsare useful and in some cases, necessary, especially when treating asignificant nutrient or hormonal deficiency. It’s wise to consult a knowledgeableprofessional before buyingthe antioxidant du jour mentioned bya friend from the gym.My Healing Cottage“A sacred place for Reflection and Revitalization”edrianna@bellsouth.netwww.myhealingcottage.comEdrianna StilwellBrennan Healing Science®Energy Healer • Integration PractitionerF.B.H.S. That isthe single reason that Pilates flattens absso quickly,” comments Ungaro.Improve Eating Habits“The increased body awareness willalso make you less likely to indulge inunhealthy eating habits,” notes Ungaro.Experiencing the improvements to yourbody and of what it’s capable is incrediblymotivating. “You will have a newrespect for your body and be morelikely to take better care of it,” she says. The Organic Bedroom isthe most Health-conscious mattressstore in the Carolinas, featuring 5 luxuriousorganic brands – WJ Southard, Royal-Pedic,Savvy Rest, Suite Sleep & Naturepedic — allnon-toxic and chemical free.919-521-5566www.theorganicbedroom.comFamily Owned & Operated6325-61 Falls of Neuse Road, Raleigh, NCQueen Size Organic mattresses starting at $1595 delivered. wisewordsGMO Truths andConsequencesHealth and Safety are Question MarksThe food industrytells consumersthat geneticallyengineered foodsare safe. On universitycampuses, agriculture studentslearn that suchgenetically modifiedorganisms (GMO) areboth safe and necessaryto feed the world. TheCouncil for BiotechnologyInformation, a biotech industry-supportednonprofit, even created acoloring book to teach children aboutthe many benefits of GMO crops, includingimproved nutrition. Most GMO crops have beengenetically engineered to withstandspraying with herbicides, such as Monsanto’sRoundup-Ready soybeans, orto produce their own pesticides, suchas “Bt” corn and cotton. Bill Freese, ascience policy analyst at the nonprofitCenter for Food Safety, warns us to beleery of simplistic claims that don’t takeinto account unintended consequences. For example, he points out that, “GMOcrops have nothing to do with feedingthe world, because almost all geneticallyengineered crops are corn andsoybeans... used to feed livestock inrich countries, or to feed automobiles.”Approximately 40 percent of corn currentlyis used to make ethanol.Freese adds, “They don’t increaseyields and they don’t increase nutrition.”But GMO crops have led to astaggering increase in herbicide use, putting both farmers and consumers atgreater risk for exposure to these toxinsby Melinda Hemmelgarnand related diseases, accordingto the Center for Food Safety. So the question is:Are GMOs the panacea industrywants us to believe,or are they contributingto chronic disease?Hereare threeclaims commonlyheardabout GMOs,generally madeby the biotechnologyindustry and theirfunded researchers.Claim: GMOs are safe.Fact Check: Little research existson the long-term effects of consumingGMO foods. According to Douglas Gurian-Sherman,a senior scientist with theUnion of Concerned Scientists, safetyassessments have left us with significantuncertainties about whether GMOfood is safe or not. However, concernsvoiced by the Center for Food Safetyrevolve around potential allergens andtoxins from both herbicide and pesticideresidues and new genetic material.New research from the EuropeanUnion published in Food and ChemicalToxicology adds to growing concernsabout the risks. Researchers discoveredthat rats fed GMO corn and drinkingwater containing Roundup herbicideexperienced negative health effectsduring their two-year lifespan, includingmammary tumors and disabled pituitaryfunction in females, and liver and kidneydamage in males. These outcomes wereattributed to the endocrine-disrupting effectsof Roundup, as well as the geneticmakeup of the engineered corn. What makes this study uniqueand troubling is that it’s the longestsuch study period to date. Most studiesfunded and conducted by industry lastjust 90 days—not long enough to fullydocument potential harm.Michael Hansen, Ph.D., a seniorscientist at Consumer Reports, states ina memo to the American Medical Association’s(AMA) Council on Scienceand Public Health, “Unlike all otherdeveloped countries, the U.S. Foodand Drug Administration does not requiresafety testing for GE [geneticallyengineered] plants.”Hansen explains, “In additionto the FDA not requiring any premarketsafety testing, there is virtuallyno independent safety testing ofthese crops in the United States, dueto intellectual property rights. Whenfarmers buy GE seed in the U.S., theyinvariably must sign a product stewardshipagreement that forbids them fromgiving such seeds to researchers.” Plus,“Researchers must get permission fromthe biotech companies before they cando research, which means there is apaucity of independent research.”The good news is that last June, the AMA recommended mandatorypre-market safety testing to better characterizethe potential harms of bioengineeredfoods.Claim: GMO crops use fewer pesticides, and those used are safer thanmost others and break down quickly.Fact Check: Roundup herbicide isincreasingly sprayed on a growing numberof herbicide-resistant GMO crops, including corn, soy, canola, sugar beetsand most recently, alfalfa. By trackingthe U.S. Department of Agriculture’spesticide use data, Charles Benbrook, research professor at the Center forSustaining Agriculture and Natural Resources,at Washington State University, discovered that herbicide-resistant croptechnology led to a 527-million-poundincrease in herbicide use in the UnitedStates between 1996 and 2011.With the growing presence ofherbicide-resistant weeds, new GEforms of corn and soybeans have beendeveloped to resist stronger and more22 www.wncmountainsna.com

dangerous herbicides, such as 2,4-D,one of the two ingredients in AgentOrange, a defoliant used in the VietnamWar. Benbrook projects that these newGMO crops could drive herbicide usageup by about another 50 percent.According to Warren Porter, Ph.D.,a biologist and environmental toxicologyprofessor at the University ofWisconsin-Madison, and Theo Colborn,Ph.D., president of The EndocrineDisruption Exchange, glyphosate, theactive chemical ingredient in Roundup,is an endocrine disruptor, meaning itinterferes with hormone systems.Porter says we can expect higherlevels of herbicide residues in GMOfood crops. A report from the U.S.Geological Survey (USGS) found thatglyphosate is now commonly found inrain, streams and air during the growingseason. “Though glyphosate is the mostwidely used herbicide in the world, weknow very little about its long-term effectsto the environment,” cautions PaulCapel, a USGS chemist.A Canadian study showing thatthe Bt toxins from GMO corn areshowing up in umbilical cord bloodand the blood of pregnant women isanother concern. Monsanto claims Btis harmless and will break down in ourdigestive tracts. But we have no way ofknowing the effect of these toxins ondeveloping fetuses, says Marcia Ishii-Eiteman, Ph.D., a senior scientist withthe Pesticide Action Network.Claim: GMO labeling isn’t necessary.Fact Check: Hansen believes that ifthere are unexpected adverse healtheffects resulting from consuming GMOfoods, a product label would allowpeople to begin connecting symptomswith foods consumed. Until there isconsistent, national GMO food labeling, everyone is just dining in the dark.Learn more and take action atJustLabelIt.org.Melinda Hemmelgarn, aka the “FoodSleuth,” is a registered dietitian andaward-winning writer and radio hostat kopn.org, in Columbia, MO (FoodSleuth@gmail.com). Both of these mirrors areclouded with ego-related dust that distortsour vision. Only when we turn ourgaze inward with the intuitive eye ofawareness can we perceive our innatewholeness, for there is no dust on themirror of the soul.Consider this: A consciousness ofwholeness reunifies us with our authenticself, so that even during those timeswhen we are unaware of it, our wholenessis intact and utterly dust-free—onlyour awareness of it is missing. Whenawareness returns, we live free fromego’s bondage and its ignorance-soakedhistory and habits. We are reunifiedwith the reality of our being. Our daily practice is to be evermindful—on the dot—the moment welose sight of our true nature. Everydayexperiences grace us with remindersby mentally tapping us on the shoulderand returning us to the qualities wewish to express in our interactions withour self, others and all of life. We arecontinually given the opportunity toreconnect with the high vision we holdby Michael Bernard Beckwithfor ourselves in our mental, emotional, spiritual, physical, professional, relationaland communal life structures. It serves us well to remember thatwe are here learning to mother ourconsciousness, just as the universemothers us throughout our lifetimeand beyond. Intelligence, wisdom, intuition, joy and creativity—theseare the qualities we want to motherwithin ourselves in order to unveil ouroriginal face. As we set a conscious intentionto evolve, we live as the masterartists we are—creating, directing andproducing our lives. The more time we set aside formeditation, contemplation and lifevisioning, the more we can have 20/20vision in foresight, rather than hindsight.Through practice, we activate ourintuition, clean off egoic dust and entera more consistently clear-sighted stateof mindful being. Thus we actualizeour highest potential and realize ourorganic, enlightened consciousness.Michael Bernard Beckwith is the founderof the Agape International SpiritualCenter, in Los Angeles, California, authorof Life Visioning: A TransformativeProcess for Activating Your Unique Giftsand Highest Potential (Sounds True,2011/2013), and originator of the LifeVisioning process.natural awakenings January 201323
