Thecertification level of LEED Platinum is the highest levelattainable within the program created by the UnitedStates Green Building Council (USGBC). The residenceis only the second new construction home to achieve theelite LEED Platinum certification in the State of Illinois andis the first to do so on the North Shore. The official award presentation will take place at theresidence at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, January 27, 2012.Anthony Janowski, the 2012 President of the U.S. GreenBuilding Council Illinois Chapter, will present the officialLEED Platinum certificate to the homeowners. A tour of thehome will follow. Unique to this home is how it adheres to the aesthetic of the surrounding community while stillimplementing a wide enough range of green features to achieve the prestigious LEED Platinum rating. It's one ofthe few LEED homes to take a non-modernist approach to its exterior, as well as being informed by traditional lowimpactbuilding philosophies. The home is classic in its style, form and proportions, yet modern in its use ofmaterials, colors and systems. Green features include a vegetative green roof, passive, natural ventilation; passivesolar heating and cooling; water-efficient indoor plumbing fixtures including a waterless urinal; low and no-VOCfinishes and fixtures; standing seam metal roofing; cement fiberboard siding; and prefabricated framing. The Washington Avenue home was designed by NathanKipnis, AIA of Kipnis Architecture + Planning of Evanston andbuilt by Scott Simpson Builders of Northbrook. Owners Barryand Natalie Slotnick moved into the house in April of 2011with their two young children.Architect Kipnis states, “The house was built for 40% of thecost of the first LEED Platinum home in Illinois and in a stylethat appeals to a much wider cross section of the public. Whilethese homes can be thought of as pioneering efforts, if thegoal is to engage the public then the design should becontextual to neighborhood and not be aesthetically shocking. The Slotnick's home is a perfect example of this.”

LEED for Homes is a voluntary, third-partycertification program developed byresidential experts and experiencedbuilders. LEED promotes the design andconstruction of high performance greenhomes, and encourages the adoption ofsustainable practices throughout thebuilding industry.###
