Themusicians had amost enjoyable afternoon &arealready looking forward to the next one.The event was organised by Devon Folk &sponsored by the Exmouth Folk Dance Club.THE OLDE BERRY BANDCharlie Lewis tells of an exciting new folk-relatedmusical project which is in the process of beingset up at St. Mary’s church in Berry Pomeroy.Over acentury since it performed for the last time,we have decided to re-start our old parish band.As readers will know, until the advent of modernrecording technology the playing of the parishbands represented the only regular opportunity formost ordinary people to hear instrumental music. From the time of Elizabeth Ito the reign of QueenVictoria the bands sustained a long tradition oflive community-based musical performance, becomingin the process the root of the English folkmovement. Now, in aventure that is already bringing togetherperformers from avariety of musical backgrounds,we have begun to assemble an enthusiastic groupof local musicians. Concentrating mainly onre-discovering the Church of England’s lost traditionof metrical Psalmody, the band and choir willbe performing at Berry Pomeroy’s monthly serviceof Prayer Book matins (at 11.15 a.m. on the fourthSunday of each month). Using the 1562 EnglishPsalter as our principal textual source, we aim toexplore alargely forgotten musical repertoire andto breathe new life into one of the Church’sneglected traditions.11Last Thursdayof every monthatTheDevonArmsHotelNorthumberlandPlaceTeignmouth8pm.For furtherdetails contact:MartynHillstead01626778071matyngh@aol.comAlthough we have enough musicians to getstarted we are still looking for additionalperformers, so should any readers wish tobecome involved –either as players or singers–Iinvite them to contact me. Ican be reachedby telephone on 01803 525722 or by e-mail atelwynlewis@ntlworld.com . ReviewsJOANNA:-TraditionaldancemusicfromEnglandThe BISMARCKS Ref. EFDSSCD10 - April 2005It'sbeen along time coming but JOANNA the second album from the BISMARCKS has been wellworth the wait. As with their first album UPSTREAM the recording is of extremely high quality, although the material on the new album is similar in content, the style has evolved and sounds freshand up to dateThe Bismarcks are three musicians playing predominantly traditional tunes in a modern yettraditional style. No drums, no bass guitar, no brass, instead some of the finest fiddle, melodeon andpiano sounds that you are ever likely to hear.Members Nina Hansell, Gareth Kiddier and Ed Rennie have compiled another inspired collectionof dance tunes ranging from the perennial Speed The Plough, once voted the most performed dancetune of all time but now given the Bismarck touch and as aresult sounding original and interesting- to the exotically named Tarantella Calabria /3e Partie du Caledonia not adish at the local Italianrestaurant but acracking 48 bar jig. This tune in particular shows the band at their best. Ed'spercussive melodeon style and Nina's bouncy fiddle beautifully balanced with Gareth's pin sharpkeyboard bass lines underpinning asound which belies the size of the band.Other highlights include the Market Rasen Quickstep /Togmeister Twostep (Terry Wogan seems toget everywhere!) Although they have only recently started performingtogether as atrio, their collective experience is extensive, afact that is evident on this recording.Their knowledge of traditional music is also evident in the sleeve notes. The notes about the tracksare succinct and informative, while the background to the choice of music and the performance styleis invaluable in appreciating the album in more depth. They have obviously given much thought, based on both research and personal preference, to theirperformance style and have adopted one that would be difficult to imitate. As individual performersthey have distinctive styles, as atrio the blend is unique. Annie Dearman has apowerful voice thatresonates in the mind for some time after the CD has finished playing. In most of the numbers onwhich she sings the accompaniment is similarly robust and complements her singing perfectly. Withsuch astrong vocal lead, it might have been tempting to make the instrumentation of secondarysignificance which would have trivialised the value ofthe voice as an instrument and part ofawhole.Vic Gammon's voice gives the vocal contrast needed on an album of 19 tracks, especially on theIrish Set Dancing ClassesClosed August.New venue from Wednesday 7th Sept.8pm FunctionRoom,Jolly Farmer,Market Street, Newton Abbot.Details :Maggie Daniel 01803 204350DANCEWITHLEIGHVILLAGE HALLSaturday 17th SeptemberSarahBazeley& DartmoorPixieBand34PDF created with pdfFactory Pro trial version www.pdffactory.com

Reviewsunaccompanied version of Early, Early In TheSpring, aparticular favourite. As for the instrumentation, at various times Vicplays anglo-concertina, banjo and 1-row melodeon, while Steve plays 1and 2row melodeonsand mouth organs. On three of the four instrumentalstracks, Trip to Brighton, Enfield Wash andPleal's Allemand, they are joined by JohnnyAdams. Both the song accompaniments and thetunes are rhythmic and emphatic, astyle that maynot be to all tastes but one that works well for thistrio. The standard of musicianship is excellentthroughout. A live performance would be anexciting and uplifting event and Ihope to be ableto see them in the not too distant future. The material has been chosen specifically to givean overview of the themes, origins and modes oftransmission that occur within traditional music. Thus love, marriage, seduction, sex, separation, fidelity, prostitution, loss jealously, parental disapproval, fantasy, death, murder and deception, allfeature: the themes familiar in the soap operas sopopular in today's society. They, therefore, "dealwith recurring human experiences and still havethe ability to speak to and move us today".This album is another brought out on the EFDSSlabel and is an indication of the valuable work thatis being done by the Society to promote traditionalmaterial through its publications. It brings togethertraditional songs and instrumental music inastyle appropriate to aparticular historical periodwith a twenty-first century interpretation. Thearrangements reflect the idea behind the project, both vocally and instrumentally. For anyone interestedin traditional music the CD should be intheir collection, likewise for those who want aclearer understanding of style or who enjoy arousing audio experience.Jacqueline PattenOggle Band advertFOOTLOOSEBARN DANCE BANDFOUR PIECE BANDOWN CALLERMike &Sheila 01647 433464Trevor 01769 52059535PDF created with pdfFactory Pro trial version www.pdffactory.com

ReviewsTHE MOONSHINES BRIGHTLynne Heraud and Pat Turner.Wildgoose records WGS 321 CDThis is aparticularly delightful CD. An example oftwo-part harmony at its very best.Though probably little known to many here in thedeep South West, both Lynn Heraud and PatTurner are recognised nationally as well establishedperformers, both as solo artists and incombination with others – Lynne with KeithKendrick was one of the guests at WadebridgeFestival 2004.When Iinitially listened to the first track on thisCD The Moon Shines Bright, in spite of theexcellence of their singing, I did have just onesmall reservation. That being, would sixteen tracksof female vocal purity begin to pall? Ican assurethe reader that it did not. It didn’t because of thediverse selection of material chosen –traditional,quasi-music hall, humorous to contemporary –withsuperlative harmonies applied and in two instancesto Pat’s guitar accompaniment. There are one ortwo instances of double-tracking, a techniquewhich I, in the main, frown upon. However, inrespect of this CD it is tastefully and appropriatelyapplied to musically beneficial effect, i.e. not tojust create more volume.Pat and Lynne, in the main, lean t’wards traditionalEnglish song but that in no way inhibits theirconsiderable ability to write their own material,Autumn is Down by Pat and IJust Want To Be LikeThe Other Girls by Lynne are perfect examples ofthis. And I must not fail to mention KeithScowcroft’s Where The Seeds Of Love Grew put tomusic by Lynne -brilliant. Iwonder how manypeople in the South West sing Scowie’s poems andare oblivious to the fact?Sometime ago, Iheard Lynn Heraud described, asthe ‘Hertfordshire linnet’, which Ithink, is an aptdescription of her singing. Lynn Heraud’s soaringvoice underpinned by and in combination with thewarm timbre of Pat Turner’s voice is a perfectmusical balance. ReviewsPARALLELSTRANDSMartin Graebe & Shan CowanWGS323CDMartin has along-established and well-deservedreputation as asinger and writer of songs in thetraditional style. Indeed Martin was aregular onthe Exeter folk scene back in the 70's and early80's and at the long-defunct Sunday club at SouthTawton. In recent years Martin has become theleading authority on the work of Rev. SabineBaring-Gould in preserving the songs and musicof the South-West, and particularly of Devon fromthe late 19th Century and early twentieth century.Since meeting Martin a few years ago at aBaring-Gould study week, Shan has also undertakenmuch valuable work in researching Baring-Gould's sources and transcribing his collectedsongs.Irarely play anew CD asecond time immediatelyafter the initial hearing, but Iwas so taken withseveral of the tracks that Icouldn't delay hearingthem again. Though I'd not heard Martin performwith Shan before, nor with accompanying musicians,I'd expected aquality performance, but thechoice of material, the delivery, the harmoniesand the accompaniments (by Jeff Gillett on guitar&mandolin, Keith Kendrick on concertina, PaulBurgess on fiddle, Barry Lister on brass, PaulSartin on oboe and Paul Wilson on accordion) allcombine to make atruly impressive album.TheBarnOwlsCountryDanceBandEast CornwallDennisCook01822 832002other tracks on this album. (All arewelcome). The book contains sixty tunes which are mostly inpairs so that they can easily be played as short sets, four local versions of what "furriners" just call theNorfolk Long Dance, and acircle dance known as theBuxton 7. ReviewsWAGERDr. Faustus Fellside FECD 189Bring four individually highly respected youngsingers and musicians together to give a newslant to traditional ballads, add a couple oforiginal compositions and you have the essenceof Dr Faustus. On their debut album, though very good, Ifeltthat the quartet were still experimenting to findthe best combination of their talents. On theirlatest CD, there's still some experimentation butgenerally amuch more cohesive feeling in thepresentation. The opening track, BroomfieldWager, already asubstantial ballad, is quite amarathon, and demonstrates particularly well theblending of voices and instrumental for maximumdramatic effect. It's good also to hear moreuse of the voices in harmony. The songs generally are given the full instrumentalbacking and interludes, which, though possiblyirritating the purist, certainly gives addedinterest. Ididn't find the accompaniment distractingor intrusive. There are ten good tracks on thealbum, with Lord Ellenwater, acomposite versionof an epic ballad, and 'The Shepherd's Song'from the Gardiner collection being particularlyworthy of note.Tim Van Eyken, Benji Kirkpatrick, Paul Sartinand Robert Harbron bring an exciting approachto English traditional material as Dr Faustus.(Available from:Fellside RecordingsLtd, P.O. Always on the lookout for less familiar versions of a well-knownsong or an unusual but appealing tune, theirmaterial, well-supported by detailed sleevenotes, never lacks interest. The accompaniments on cello, melodeon andanglo concertina from Anahata perfectly complementMary's voice, which carries the samewarmth and feeling for the songs that sheexpresses in live performances. Ican honestlysay that there are no tracks which fail to appealto me, but the first and final songs, Green GrowThe Laurel and If IWere ABlackbird ,epitomiseMary's unique style and quality. Iparticularlylike Anahata's cheeky interposing of Morristunes between the verses of The Prickly Bush -not an obvious partnership! Though accompanyingherself on banjo on some songs, theinstrumentals feature Mary on English concertinaalong with Anahata's melodeon in amedleyof 3/2 hornpipes (one composed by Purcell) andaselection of other hornpipes influenced in partby playing for Molly Dancing in their EastAnglian home -all great to listen to, and arealchallenge for lesser melodeon players to copy.Once again, congratulations to WildGoose and toMary &Anahata for producing amost enjoyableCD.Colin AndrewsAny folk websitesofinterest? Please let usknow,so we can pass onthe details toothers.41PDF created with pdfFactory Pro trial version www.pdffactory.com

ReviewsSCATTER PIPESVicky Swan and Jonny DyerWGS 324 CDVicky Swan and Jonny Dyer are aperfect blendingof musical talents, having been playing together forover ten years both as aduo and as part of SeriousKitchen. Whilst Ipersonally consider Vicky Swanto be the principle exponent of the Scottish Smallpipes‘ south of the border’, she is also anextremely accomplished flautist and double bassplayer. Jonny Dyer exhibits outstanding technicalability in his supporting guitar work and alsotastefully applies his Pigin72 accordion on anumber of tracks. This CD is not just about Scottish smallpiping. It isa CD packed full with musical delights, songs, superlative smallpiping, brilliant guitar and fluteplaying and beautiful innovative compositions. Infact out of the eleven total tracks, only six are ofpure piping. On tracks, 3, 7 and 11, Jonny Dyersings The Hare’s Lament, The Trooper and theMaid, and Seven Little Gypsies respectively. Jonnyhas aclear mellow appealing voice and uses it togive an imaginative and contemporary interpretationto the three songs.Vicky Swan’s piping is everything that one wouldexpect from amusician of this calibre. Her phrasing, gracing of and empathy with the music is ajoyto hear. For me, Vicky Swan’s interpretation of J.Scott Skinner’s Hector the Hero and Jonny Dyer’sThe Willows can only be described as enchanting.Ihave just two small moans. In the first instance, the sleeve notes simply credit Vicky with playingthe Scottish Smallpipes and as far as Iam able todetermine, they are Smallpipes in ‘A’ throughoutthe recording. Iwould dearly have loved to hearVicky play the Smallpipes in ‘D’. Secondly, in thelatter part of track 11, there is an instance ofdouble-tracking over Vicky’s flute playing. Ifeelthat it is not necessary and does not enhance thecharmingly fluid purity of the flute. For those readers with amyopic opinion of pipersand piping The Bulgarian Bandit would be amusical revelation. The Bulgarian Bandit has awonderful Eastern European feel to it with asemi-quaver being missed out in one bar. To quotethe sleeve notes, “Wonderful for bodhran playersto get completely confused.” I, as the reviewer ofthis CD, am lost in admiration for Vicky Swan’stechnical ability.Ken Hinchliffe43EXMOUTH YWCA adENGLISH & BORDER MUSICFORPIPESDavid Faulkner -Border bagpipesSteve Turner -AccordionIf you think all bagpipes sound the same, thenDavid's article and the CDs reviewed on thispage should convince you otherwise.David's album is exactly as described in thetitle -an amazing selection of pipe tunes culledfrom various collections, all fully credited andcatalogued in the sleeve notes, and played onSwayne Border Pipes. There's not much pointin listing titles by name since almost all will beunfamiliar, but there are several 3/2 and 9/4hornpipes, a 9/8 slip jig as well as morefamiliar rhythms.Apiper will no doubt be keen to try some ofthe tunes out -or at least seek out the sources -and some ambitious musicians on other instrumentswill find several tunes an appealingchallenge. The album works very well, however,as relaxing 'mood music, particularlywith Steve's distinctive accompaniment of unusualchordal progressions and short countermelodybreaks.David &Steve both play with the Eelgrinders.Colin AndrewsPDF created with pdfFactory Pro trial version www.pdffactory.com
