Welcome to our Spring/Summer SeasonWelcome to The Maltings Theatre & Cinema’s Spring/Summer Season. My name is Matthew Rooke and it ismy pleasure to present another gloriously diverse hamperof delights that has been largely assembled as a partinggift by my predecessor, Miles Gregory. There really issomething for everyone this season, so why not takethe plunge and dive in? A wealth of talent andentertainment awaits you!One of the great attractions of my new post is thequality of work produced locally, such as the large-scaleproductions of the Berwick Operatic Society and SpittalVariety Group, the vintage insanity of the BerwickBroadcasting Corporation, and the wonderful work ofthe Maltings Youth Theatre, to name but a few. In time,I hope to add our own professional productions to themix by building on my experience in musical theatre.I am also keen to upgrade our cinema and technicalequipment. By acquiring the latest digital projectionand lighting technology, what currently takes hours oftechnical time will be achieved “at the flick of a switch”.This will give us more flexibility to programme what audiences wantto see - when they want to see it - as well as save money in the long term, too.In April, The Maltings begins its new role championing the Visual Arts in Berwick with funding fromArts Council England for the coming three years. Although the total money for Visual Arts will reducesignificantly when the Gymnasium Gallery’s English Heritage funding ends on 31st March, for example,it is an opportunity to start afresh. I look forward to sharing our plans as this challenging work unfoldsin the coming financial year.On a personal note, my family has been in the Borders for nearly 10 years now and my sons are enrolledin local schools. The Maltings is more than just a career opportunity - its part of my home patch. Apartfrom my life in the arts, my wife and I run a family farm so I feel part of the rhythm of life in these parts. For every heart-stopping beautiful sunrise, there is a numb-fingered 3am stretch in the lambing pens, nursing the newly born along the tightrope of life and death. I hope this empathy ensures I do not strayfar from understanding the working lives that we all lead in this community and promoting work thatfits in with Borders lifestyle.I hardly need say that we are all living in tough economic times and that means The Maltings cannotrest on its laurels. I wholeheartedly look forward to working closely with the community, our fundersand the great team in place here at the theatre to ensure that that a visit to The Maltings continuesto be one of life’s essential little luxuries.Matthew RookeChief Executive & Artistic DirectorXylophone ProductionsCan You Dig It?Comedy Songs AboutGrowing Your OwnSat 3 Mar 7.30pmComedy songs about growing your own vegetables, including The Ballad of Derrick the Evil Pigeon, apowerful love song to Alan Titchmarsh, and theworld’s first rap battle between a gardener and a slug.Starring musical comedians (and real-life allotmentholders) Jo Stephenson and Dan Woods, the showwill appeal to both vegetable-growing novices andseasoned cultivators.
