IMPORTANT FACTORS FOR WINDOWS[ ] DirectionIn order to be able to use the sun ideally, plan to haveyour windows facing mostly south, west or east. Largewindow surfaces facing south create good energybalance and bring light and life into your rooms. Plan toinstall sun protection systems right from the start to avoidoverheating your rooms. Additionally you can integrateinsect protection, too.[ ] Thermal insulationA house loses approx. 25 % of energy through its windows. Therefore thermal insulation is particularly important. This depends on frame material, impermeability andglazing. The statistical indicator for insulation propertiesof the window is the U value. The smaller the U value, thebetter the insulation properties of the window.[ ] SoundproofingNoise is unpleasant and can have a negative effect onhumans given the corresponding intensity and duration. Thus choose the correct glazing, frame material andimpermeability.Soundproofing of windows is measured in decibles (dB).The higher the dB value, the better the soundproofingproperties of the window.[ ] ImpermeabilityWindows are an important component of the outside walland have to withstand driving rain and wind-load. The importantfactor is the impermeability or air tightness of thewindow. This is indicated through the joint permeabilitycoefficient, called the “a value”. The smaller the “a value”,the higher the impermeability of the window.[ ] Burglary protectionAn experienced burglar can unhinge a window sash injust ten seconds. To prevent this Internorm offers highsecurity as standard. For additional security Internorm offersversions of safety class WK1 and WK2 with unhingeprotection, special locking parts, locking mechanismpoints etc. Fix-O-Round Technology ensures that theglass pane is connected to the sash frame on all sides.Unhinging the pane is therefore almost impossible. (seepage 13).[ ] Energy savingThe correct windows can help you considerably to saveenergy. Internorm therefore offers the best windows withthe most sophisticated technology and optimum thermalinsulation and soundproofing. With corresponding glazingyou can additionally achieve low energy or passive housestandards. Thus you can save on heating costs andimprove your living environment.[ ] Installation/FittingProfessional fitting of windows and doors is required forperfect functionality and long-term usability. Thermalloss can occur especially in the connecting area to thebrickwork resulting in condensation and mould. Thereforefitting should only be carried out by trained personnelsuch as your Internorm distribution partner. He can guaranteeyou installations according to the most up-to-datetechnology, compliance to the standards – such as theRAL installation – and observance to the structural-physicalprinciples.[ ] Correct VentilationInternorm windows offer superb thermal insulation andhigh impermeability. This prevents cumbersome draughts, saves heating costs and keeps out disruptive noise. Therefore you should systematically air your rooms. We recommend several times a day to have a 5 minute“complete airing session”. The room temperature willdrop for a few minutes, but the heat storage areas ofwall, ceiling and floor will not. Fresh air will warm up againquickly and energy loss is minimal.

TIMBER/ALUMINIUM WINDOWSDesignsTimber/aluminium window systems are available in five different designs. You can therefore adapt your window design to suitthe style of your house. These designs can be perfectly combined with each other and with all other Internorm window systems.Premium DesignThis design impresses in how it plays with concave andconvex forms – with a lively light and shadow effect.Softline DesignPerfect harmony and aesthetics – ensured by rounding-offall visible edges. SECURITYSECURITY HARDWAREAll Internorm windows are equipped with standard securityfeatures. For higher security we offer two additional versionsin the security classes 1 and 2.STANDARD SECURITYAs standard all Internorm window systems provide increasedburglary protection due to a mushroom shaped peg anda security locking plate. In all Internorm window systemswith fully concealed hardware both bottom corners are fittedwith security hardware.PROTECTION ON ALL CORNERSWITH WK 1 – SECURITY Class 1Windows with tested security class 1(WK 1) are protected with special hardwareparts on all four corners as well as drilling protectionon the drive. Additionally a lockable handleand 6 mm glass (thicker panes are available) arefitted. Installation is carried out with rawlplugs orscrews. The BBA (British Board of Agrément) is the UK’s major body for new construction products and installers. The BBA AgrémentCertificates are recognised by specifiers and other industry decisionmakers as proof that the products covered by them havebeen rigorously and impartially assessed. The certificate shows that compliance with Building Regulations has been achievedand will last for a defined period. The BBA has evaluated more than 60 different window and door systems. All the BBA testsare carried out in accordance with EN45001 and several are accredited under the UKAS scheme. Tests include the followingprocedures: durability, air permeability, water tightness, wind resistance, endurance on door & window hardware, thermalinsulation and enhanced resistance to intrusion. Many companies advertise their windows and doors as BBA accredited, but itis only the profile that has the accreditation not their manufacturing process. Here at Internorm we are striving to have both ourwindow profile and our manufacturing process accredited by the BBA.BBA certification on its own does not guarantee security or consistency of standards. TIPSRemodeLlingSwap windows to save energy sustainablyHigh energy prices, climate protection and the introductionof energy performance certificates all lead to the fact that aninvestment in sustainable remodelling of your house willpay off quickly. Old “energy dumps” can be easily replacedwith modern, highly thermally insulated Internorm windowsystems, which will save heating costs.Lower energy consumption from the startAs has been demonstrated in various studies, a temperaturerise of two degrees centigrade can be accommodatedwithout any major economic impact, anything above that iscritical. The situation is serious, but not hopeless. Everyoneagrees that the major contributor for climate change is theworldwide emission of CO 2.The most effective and also the most economical way toreduce these emissions, is to find measures to lower theenergy consumption right from the start. This was theverdict of a study on climate protection carried out by themanagement consultancy McKinsey about: measures, suchas applying nuclear or wind power instead, reforestation orstorage of CO 2, where CO 2is reduced slowly, all generateadditional costs. Methods, however, which reduce the initialenergy consumption, such as using biofuel or heating waterThermal imaging provides information on thermal bridges of a house.Image: Verband Privater Bauherren e. V./ Bundesverband DeutscherBaustoff-Fachhandel e. V.with solar energy, generate profit. For this reason, accordingto the McKinsey study, the best solution for economicclimate protection clearly is: efficient thermal insulation.Every saved tonne of CO 2leaves a profit of € 150,–.Saving tonnes of CO 2is possibleThis notion becomes even more interesting, if you notewhere these CO 2emissions originate from: the well-known“sinners” industry and traffic each account for approximatelya third, but roughly 40 % come from badly insulatedbuildings. As 25 to 30 %of the heat in ahouse escapesthrough thewindows alone;this results inan increasedneed for heatingand cooling, using modernwindows couldalready savetonnes of CO 2every year. If allwindows in anaverage housewith 20 windowsaged 25years would bereplaced withnew passiveENERGY WINDOWEdition Window with 3LA GlazingReport Number: Chilt/T07021-1BFRC Certified Simulator 032, Mike Chorltonhouse windows, every year almost two tonnes of CO 2could be saved. In case these old windows are old singleglazed windows, which are even less insulated, the numberwould rise to almost five tonnes.WIN/WIN SITUATIONWell remodelled houses and passive houses unburden theenvironment, energy and costs are conserved sustainably.Sophisticated windows save a lot of money, time and fuss –and they raise living quality for years to come.Apart from increased demands on thermal protection and animpermeable building shell, not only do thermal characteristicshave to be improved, the elementary rules of structuralphysics must also be considered when fitting windows. Inaddition to that, remodelling the facade will improve theenergy balance considerably.More energy efficiency using highlythermally insulating INTERNORM windowsystemsWindow solutions are an investment with a lasting value. Forthis reason, any quality conscious person carrying out remodellingworks should make use of the security of a brandname. For only brand name windows will keep their promisesin the long run: exactly fitting and individual windows andenergy conservation solutions – highly thermally insulating, economic and environment friendly.Passive house certified and certified Internorm windowsystems with triple glazing not only considerably reducethe annual CO 2output, they are also extremely economic.Another example: if all the 60 million windows in Austriawere on passive house standard, the total annual CO 2outputof Austria would be reduced by over 5.7 million tonnesof CO 2, which would be over 6 %. To put it bluntly: if othermeasures, such as improved insulation of walls and roofs,Internorm, with all of its lowest energy and passive housewindow systems, is the first place to contact, when youwant to stop “heating the outside through your windows”.Additionally, the special triple white glass with solar coatingwill provide a gain in solar energy.etc. were included in the calculation, the Kyoto target of20 % CO 2reduction could be achieved with energy conservationon buildings alone. This is why Internorm specifically supports passive housewindows: Internorm is the only window manufacturer inThermal remodelling – just professionalYour demand when remodelling: less heating costs – moreenergy efficiency and sustainability – simply better livingquality!Europe with nine passive house certificates from the Pas-Internorm will be happy to fulfil your demands and you willsivhausinstitut Darmstadt, Dr. Feist. This is where thepositive effect of triple glazed Internorm window systems isapplied: The surface temperature of the frame and the glasspane is closer to the inside air temperature due to the goodthermal insulation. Thus cold and draughts are avoided anda nice and warm cosy spot is created even near the window.EnergY CONSERVATION – aLSO WITHLARGE SCALE WINDOW SOLUTIONSNo need to do without generous window constructions. The highly thermally insulating properties of triple glazed Internormwindow systems allow you to use 40 % larger glasssurfaces in comparison with double glazing at the sameheating costs.THERMAL INSULATIONAs a building can lose approx. 25 to 30 % of its energythrough the windows, the thermal insulation of the windowsis especially important. Energy transfer through the windowsis not only heat loss – due to the transparency of the glass,an energy gain is also achieved. If correctly planned with well laid out window surfaces (i.e.large window surfaces towards the south), the energy balanceof the building can be influenced considerably.A window‘s thermal insulation depends on the frame material, the insulating glass and the impermeability of the window. The parameter for the insulating capability of the windowis the U value. The lower the value, the better the thermalinsulation. Additional features like roller shutters and windowshutters improve the U value.WinterlY thermal protectionThe aim is to reduce the energy loss through the transparentbuilding components – windows and facades – during theheating period to an economically feasible amount and indue course to reduce emission of CO 2through heating. The parameter of the heat transmission coefficient U W is statedin W/m 2 K (Watt per square metre kelvin), which is eithermathematically calculated according to EN ISO 10077 orSOUND INSULATIONInterference of noise is unpleasant and can – given the rightintensity and duration – affect the human body negatively.Noise is perceived through changes of air pressure, whichare received through the human ear and passed on to thebrain. Sound insulation (soundproofing) of a window ismeasured in decibel. The higher the value, the better thesound insulation. Sound insulation states how much soundenergy from the original sound energy is allowed to passthrough. At an insulation of 10 dB 1/10 of the original soundenergy passes through, at 20 dB 1/100, at 30 dB 1/1000etc. Humans perceive a reduction of 10 dB as halving thenoise. DI Weratschnig, TransformArchitekten ZT-GmbHPASSIVE HOUSE WINDOWSThe window in a passive house plays a prominent role in twoways – firstly, the heat loss despite large glass surfaces canbe reduced and secondly, windows increase the possibilitiesfor heat gain through solar irradiation.Internorm‘s highly thermally insulating energy savingwindows fulfil this seemingly contradictory dual capacityinternorm expert ADVICEInternorm‘s multi-patented system technology has achieved to transfer the heat composite system of structuralcomponents/insulation/optical weather-resistant outer design, which has proven successful for decades, to windows. The unique advantages of thermal foam and aluminium can be used at their best: FKW-free thermal foam forhighly thermally environment-friendly insulation and aluminium for unlimited, weather-resistant designer possibilities.Internorm is the only window manufacturer in Europe with nine passive house certified components and also becamethe European market leader in the low energy and passive house segment with this highly thermally insulatingproduct range. When the overall concept of a passive house has been perfectly planned, it is also possible to usehighly thermally insulating, but not passive house certified components, to build lowest energy and passive houses.62/63exemplary: Triple heat protection glazing achieves U gvaluesof up to 0.5 W/m 2 K and g values (overall energy transmissionfactors) of up to 62 % – depending on coating andgas fillings. In comparison U gvalues of conventional windows often lie ataround 1.4 W/m 2 K. Using these window systems in centralEurope in south-facing houses with little shade the heat gaineven between December and February is greater than theheat loss.Besides the glazing however you have to consider theinsulation of the window frame as well as thermal bridges atthe glass edge and in the connecting area window to wall.Otherwise any positive heat gain would be cancelled outimmediately.Spacers form thermal bridges, they are usually made of aluminium.Especially for use in passive houses particularly wellthermally insulating window frames were developed, whichalso reduce the glass edge losses through deeper offsetsinto the frame.Stainless steel spacers further reduce losses at the glassedge. For passive house certified components thermally optimisedsystems – like the Internorm ISO spacers – are used.Following the automobile industry all glass panes are gluedto improve structural stability.ESSENTIAL PRINCIPLES FOR ConstruCtion OFPassivE hOusE WINDOWS:[ ] Highly thermally insulating glazing[ ] Highly thermally insulating frame[ ] Thermally optimised composite edge[ ] Expert installation, thermally optimised

PassivE housEPASSIVe Housesustainable investmentA passive house provides consistent, comfortabletemperatures in winter, as well as in summer withoutusing conventional heating or air conditioning systems.Using the existing temperature provided through solarirradiation through the windows as well as the heat fromappliances and inhabitants is sufficient, the necessaryheating energy for a passive house is only 10 % ofthat needed for a conventional house.Heating Heizwärmebedarf cost demand und and C CO O 2 -Emis 2 emissions sionen per p ro year Jah rtonnes CO2 / yearold building low energy house passive houseOptimised energy demandThis results in an annual heating demand of not more than15 kWh/m 2 a. The overall energy demand including warmwater and household electricity for a passive house is lessthan 120 kWh/m 2 a. The heating load of a passive house isnot more than 10 W/m 2 , for a room of 30 m 2 , this results ina heating load of approximately 300 Watts – just to illustrate:the heating power of a tea candle is 30 Watts already. Thismeans that 10 tea candles are enough to heat 30 m 2 ina passive house. These extraordinary savings are rootedin the two basic principles of minimising thermal loss andoptimising thermal gain.tonnes CO 2/ yearRaising comfortDue to the powerful insulation the heat stays inside thebuilding, all surrounding surfaces are equally warm. For thisreason there is no radiation asymmetry (heat radiation)originating from exterior walls in a passive house, and alsothe resulting draught phenomena are avoided. The reverseconclusion would be that heat stays outside in the summerto avoid overheating. This means that in a passive housea consistent living climate is retained throughout thewhole year – this provides a high degree of comfort for theinhabitants. Passive houses also make use of highly efficientair conditioning systems to prevent mould growth, dust andany resulting allergies.Consistent pleasant living climate in summer and winter.Reducing Costs and protecting theenvironmentAs the energy demands of a passive house are reducedby up to 90 %, heating costs and therefore CO 2emissionscan be reduced drastically – compared to a conventionallyconstructed building, on average 4.000 kg of greenhouserelevant carbon monoxide are avoided each year. This wouldcorrespond to driving about 27.000 km with a typical 6 litrecar. Therefore constructing energy efficient passive housessupports climate protection sustainably and saves onlimited resources, such as oil or gas. What is important for passive housesOne of the major characteristics is the active utilisation of existing energy – minimising thermal losses and at the same timeoptimising thermal gain, these are the basic principles. But merely combining passive house certified components is notenough to reach a passive house construction standard: The whole thing is more than the sum of its parts – mutual interactionsbetween the distinct components necessitate integral planning to fulfil three basic demands:[ ] Heating demand < 15 kWh/(m 2 a)[ ] Primary energy demand (heating, warm water, house appliances) < 120 kWh/(m 2 a)[ ] Pressure difference air exchange n50 < 0.6 h-1, i.e. at a pressure difference of 50 Pascal the air flow must be less than60 % the building’s volume per hour.cooled outgoing airheated incoming airwarm outgoing air (frombathroom and kitchen)heat loss throughfloor slabheat recovery deviceheat loss throughinsulated roofearth heat exchangerheat loss throughwallheat gain throughsolar irradiationheat loss throughwindowheat loss throughwallcold incoming airThe passive house needs an impermeableoutside shell and optimised thermal insulationwith integrated ventilation in bothdirections:Fresh air is sucked into the building undergroundthrough the ventilation pipe, preheatedby the earth, and led to the heatrecovery system. There the energy of the used air is passedon to the fresh, filtered, cold air using aheat exchanger. Here the energy storedin used air, which would normally be lost intraditional airing, is utilised. From there, air is led into the living areasand distributed with special nozzles inorder to avoid draughts. The air is sucked out of sanitary areas andthe kitchen, in order to avoid the spread ofunpleasant smells throughout the house.internorm expert adviceThe extraordinary thermal insulation clearly is the focal point in passive house construction. The enormous energysavings of up to 90 % not only please the inhabitants, but also represent an active and essential contribution toclimate protection, due to the reduced CO 2emission. Nevertheless, a highly insulating window should still be ableto fulfil all the basic functions of a modern window construction: It is important to be able to offer all window sizesand opening types, but also bespoke special constructions, such as round or angular elements. Further functions, such as burglary protection, shading, insect protection and visual design possibilities should not be treatedas unimportant for highly thermally insulating window systems.internorm expert adviceA human needs 15 to 20 m 3 of air per hour. In order to achieve better air quality in passive houses, in the coldermonths energy consuming airing can be avoided. This is why the passive house is different from conventionalbuildings. This technology necessitates careful planning and exact construction, but it results in a higher living standard andsupports CO 2savings considerably. For the sake of our environment, but also for the sake of our own well-being,we should construct more and more houses in passive house technology!64/65

SIDE ENTRANCE DOORSALUMINIUM SIDE ENTRANCE DOORSSide entrance doors serve as closure from not occupied (unheated) rooms to the outside climate. They are used for less importantrooms for which no special requirements exist (e.g. garage, cellar/storage rooms etc.).Current statistics show that burglars mostly use side entrance doors to gain access to the house. Therefore it is vital to takeadequate security features into consideration. As closure to occupied rooms (heated rooms) house entrance doors should beused due to climatic conditions.Finger scannerDoes this sound familiar?
