3tise. There are many excellent reasons to purchase at the convention:you can handle and see what you are buying, ask the “experts” for theiradvice regarding curriculum and homeschooling issues, avoid shippingcosts, take your items home with you, make it worth the vendors’time and effort to offer their services at the convention, andenable CHAP to afford the expense of bringing the convention to centralPennsylvania. If you are unable to find what you want at the convention and forneeds throughout the year, take a look at our new bookstore. Manyof our vendors do, or will eventually, take part in it as well, so whenthey have returned home, you can help them by purchasing after theconvention season. For after-convention shopping, using our bookstore also assists homeeducation across the nation. CHAP, similar organizations in other states, the National Alliance for Christian Home Education Leadership, andHSLDA, all receive a small percentage of the sales generated with thegoal of growing homeschooling in our nation and world. After a year’s delay, we finally have a CHAP bookstore, in conjunctionwith GPA and HSLDA. The prices are competitive with other onlinebookstores for any non-member shopper and even better discountsare available for CHAP bookstore members (see below) and HSLDAmembers.Last year our plan was that CHAP members would receive a greaterdiscount in the bookstore than CHAP affiliates, and we stated thatthis would be a CHAP membership benefit. Due to many unforeseencircumstances and development delays, the bookstore establishmenttook much longer than we anticipated. As you may recall, we issued acoupon in the Winter 2008 issue for members to receive two free CDsof their choice at the convention to help compensate for this delay. There is no coupon this year. However, the benefits of current and past CHAP membership is valuedat much more than the membership fee, as you can see above. Thecost of the magazine and the HSLDA membership alone is worth atleast $25, other benefits not withstanding.Since this is so, and CHAP members were and are still gaining morebenefits than affiliates, we decided to open the bookstore to a widermarket. As we worked out the final details for the bookstore, it became apparentthat everyone involved would benefit more if the bookstorehad its own membership and that it be as inclusive as possible. Evena non-affiliate person may purchase from the bookstore, but with alesser discount. Thus, membership for the bookstore is different thanthe CHAP membership. All CHAP affiliates (which includes CHAPmembers) as defined above are automatically considered members ofthe CHAP bookstore and are eligible for the discount. Check it out atwww.gpasmartstore.com.4. How is membership in CHAP related to the HSLDAdiscount? Membership is for individuals; affiliation is forsupport groups, co-ops, or non-members associated with CHAP. Non-CHAP members are referred to as affiliates. Membership is $25. Supportgroup affiliation is free and requires the support group leader toregister for the support group or co-op. The support group or co-opleader can do this online. A person can qualify for the HSLDA discountas a member of an affiliated support group or co-op with CHAP.There are now two ways to get the HSLDA discount. You can qualifyfor the HSLDA discount by being a member of CHAP or by being amember of a CHAP affiliated support group or co-op.

The answers to these and many other questions provide parents with ammunition to deal with one of the most challenging threats to a relationship, lack of honesty.Bruce ShorttTwo Enlightenment Lies: Columbus and the Flat Earth and the “Persecution” of GalileoThe left always attempts to discredit its opponents by resorting to smears. One of the familiar allegations by the left against Christianity is that not onlyare Christians against science, they have persecuted scientists and have stood in the way of progress. In particular, the “flat earth myth” and the story of the“persecution” of Galileo are two familiar smears against Christianity that are so entrenched that they even find their way into some Christian writings. Thetruth may surprise you.Aaron WatsonChanging Lives to Change the WorldIn a culture plagued by apathy and tolerance, attempting to raise a generation of world changers is an uphill battle. We are designed by God in a marvelously intricate way. Though we can not reduce our understanding of design to asimple, no-brainer, fit-everyone-into-a-box explanation, we can recognize similarities in how people learn. And what’s more, I was one! Allow me to share my own testimony of how God could use a Crockett-loving, gopher-skinning, “retarded”boy and create a national ministry that has reached thousands through the vehicle of Mantle Ministries. This message is designed to assure parentsthat the Lord can direct the interests of our children and use them to His glory. Very inspirational for parents with “irregular” children.Mary SchofieldHigh School OverviewHow do you decide what to study in high school? Some people think that if he can’t be at home during “schooltime,” he can’t be involved. Others think his job is to take over some of Mom’s chores in order to free her to spend more time with the children. ButScripture gives seven functions of a father in a godly home, and each of these can be applied very practically and powerfully in home education. Enjoy thewisdom and humor of this presentation as Rick answers the question of “What’s a Dad to Do?”

The Scriptures say that being “well” and honoring your father and mother are inextricably linked. “Honor your father and mother”is the first command with a promise. It is a promise linked with spiritual and physical prosperity, including long life. Yet this foundational command islargely ignored and resented by teenagers and adults alike. As a young man, Doug purposed before the Lord to make it a life goal to honor his parents. Inthis foundational talk, Doug addresses challenging issues like: How do wise parents instill honor in their children? What does the Bible say about the waywe are to respond to perverse authority in parents? In what way are adult sons and daughters to honor their living parents? What are the consequences fordishonoring parents? How does our culture promote dishonor? Why do children who never learn to honor their parents consistently experience failure inmarriage and business? How can adult children restore honor to relationships that have long been tinged by dishonor?Turansky and MillerTeaching Kids to Respond Well to CorrectionMany children don’t know how to respond well to correction. After all, correction is one of the tools for learning. Instead many children blame, defend, rationalize and justify their behavior. Furthermore, many parents view correction as an interruption to their lives, not realizing the teaching opportunitiespresent. When parents have a plan for correction, they can help children develop good patterns that result in a clear and strong conscience.Bruce ShorttChristianity and the FoundingThe postmodern left rejects the notion of absolute truth, and therefore the idea of historical truth. 16Jay WileWhat about K-6 Science?Homeschooling parents are faced with a dizzying array of choices when it comes to teaching science at the elementary level. In this seminar, Dr. Jay L.Wile, a former teacher at both the high school and university levels, helps parents make sense of it all. He then surveys the major curriculum choices available to homeschoolers in order to help parentsfocus on what will work for their children. At the same time, however, Dr. Wile attempts to add perspective to the issue. He makes it clear that whileteaching science at the elementary level is important, there are other subjects upon which an elementary-level education should focus.Maggie HoganClassical Composers: Music History for the Musically ChallengedThis is a fast, fun, integrated approach to history and music for those of us who never learned this stuff. Stan JohnA Blueprint for Change? - Returning to a Culture of FamilyThroughout the last two years we have heard a cacophony of voices advocating for significant change in our nation. While we might agree things are notworking well and that change is due, what kind of change do we really need? The world around us is crying out for healthy, long term family and marriagerelationships. With hopes to encourage and inspire home educators, Stan John will lay out a vision for us to reach our culture and establish a “Culture ofFamily.”17Jay Wile“Teaching” the Junior High & High School Sciences at HomeIn this seminar, Dr. Jay L. Wile explains how any parent can help his or her children learn science at the upper levels. As a former university teacher and a former highschool teacher, Dr. Wile has experienced first-hand the failure of our public school system. As a result, he is a staunch advocate of homeschooling a student all the waythrough the high school years. Dr. Wile agrees that most parents do not have the ability to teach the high school sciences at home, but he also contends that this is not aproblem. By the time a homeschooled student reaches high school, he or she should have the ability to learn independently or with the help of another. Thus, Dr. Wileadmonishes the parent to learn the subject right along with the student. With both the parent and the student helping each other learn, an upper level science experiencecan be equally rewarding for both! In order to help the homeschooling parent plan his or her science curriculum, Dr. Wile provides study timelines for both thescience-oriented and the non-science-oriented student. In addition, he discusses the mathematical skills needed in order to maintain the proposed timeline. Finally, Dr.Wile discusses the curriculum that will make it possible for the homeschooling parent to provide a quality high school science education for his or her children.Kathy KuhlTeaching Math to Struggling LearnersHow do you bear to tackle math facts again, when your child didn’t get them for the last four years? An old legislative warhorse’sthoughts turn to getting the Pennsylvania homeschooling law improved. Many have askedme what CHAP’s plans are for this legislative term.CHAP (The Christian Homeschool Association of Pennsylvania, the largest homeschoolsupport organization in the state) has long thought that the Pennsylvania law is far too restrictive. In our early attempts to change the law, we tried unsuccessfully to get what wecalled a “freedom bill,” a law with very few restrictions. This freedom bill, in spite of widespreadsupport among homeschoolers, was soundly and easily defeated by the educationestablishment. We subsequently went on to HB 1273 which was a bill that few homeschoolers thought wasperfect, but was a bill most homeschoolers could support. In essence, it puts the evaluationstep on the qualified evaluator rather than having both a qualified evaluator and the schooldistrict do evaluations as our current law requires. The current method has two disadvantages:the first is a form of double jeopardy for the homeschooling family and the second isan unfunded mandate for the school district.HB 1217 is the current version of the previous bill (1273) that we supported last session. HB1273 was introduced and championed by Representative Marisco, at the request of CHAP.Things moved smoothly as CHAP and our legal counsel met with the sponsor and the PASchool Board Association. Then all discussions stopped as the School Board Associationrefused to continue discussions while the RFPA was being litigated.CHAP is supporting HB 1217. We believe passing HB 1217 will make a better climate forhomeschooling in PA. Some have expressed concern that the political climate may be lessfavorable than in the past, but we don’t believe we can miss a whole legislative session dueto fear. Our history has been that we have had more success stopping negative things than wehave had in accomplishing positive changes. We believe that we can stop the bill if it wouldbe corrupted to the point of being unacceptable.Homeschoolers in the state need to be active in order to prevent further erosion of our freedomsto homeschool. This will be the topic of the opening talk (which is free and opento the public) for the 23rd annual CHAP Convention held at the Farm Show Complex onMay 8th and 9th. We are also having other sessions which deal with issues facing homeschoolersin Pennsylvania and the United States. For further information about the conventiongo to CHAPonline.com.If you want to be involved in this effort to improve the law in Pennsylvania, be sure thatCHAP has your contact data. You can go to our web page and sign up at Chaponline.com.Thank you. This letter may quoted in its entirety, but no permission is granted to use it in parts.Sincerely,Bruce Eagleson, MDChairman, CHAP
