FREEDOM FROM SINFUL THOUGHTS - D E L I B E R A T E S I Nas a pastor is the occult, which I have run into often inmy counseling work. Occultism is often regarded as justanother science to be studied. Yet supposedly harmlessforms of spiritualism, as well as superstitious practicessuch as wearing health rings, tipping tables, or talkingwith the dead, can bind a person to demonic forces evenwhen entered innocently. I firmly believe we shouldreject these things completely. They have nothing to dowith a childlike faith in Jesus.I know there are people who study evil – people whotry to discover its root and who attempt to unearth thesecrets of Satan. This may be understandable, but is itgodly? It seems to me that too many men and women inour society are already burdened by what they know ofmurder, fornication, and other sins.Others willingly flirt with evil in the name of experimentation.These people try, in effect, to understand itsarguments; they claim to reject darkness, but throughtoying with it, they are gripped more firmly by itspower than they realize.As long as we allow ourselves the loophole ofindecision – as long as we give evil even a little rein inour hearts and do not break with it fully, we will neverbecome wholly free; it will continue to exert power overus. I am not speaking only of the occult here, but ofeverything that is opposed to God: jealousy, hatred, lust,11

As long as we deliberately steel even a small partof our hearts against God’s intervention in our lives, wecut ourselves off <strong>from</strong> the mercy he offers us throughJesus.Certainly a divided soul must be treated with compassion– Jesus himself says he will not “break a bruisedreed” or “snuff a smoldering wick.” But it is also clear, Ibelieve, that ultimately he cannot tolerate anything thatgrieves the Holy Spirit. Jesus was and is fully victoriousover the devil and his demons, and he demands ourwholehearted service in the fight against them too.12
