The students alsolooked at alternate energy sources andfocused on wind power. The students began the unit with alaptops lesson, completing interactivemodules that related to energy andpower. The students in the lab have accessto Discovery Lab Director MelodyShaw’s website to complete all laptoplessons. This website has an individualpage that is designed each year for thestudents. They can access lessons learnedin the lab from home to show parents oradvance their learning. The website iswww.melodyshaw.com.Following the laptop lesson the studentslearned that in the United Statesthere are over 70,000 jobs available dueto advancements in wind power andabout the top twenty states that are producingenergy through wind farms. To continue learning about windpower, the students worked in teamsand assembled a windmill. The studentstested blade angles, number of blades, and direction. In another visit, the students learnedabout Newton’s third law of motion bymaking rubber band airplanes and testingthem. The airplanes allowed the studentsto see that when there is a force by oneside, there will be opposite and equalforce by the other side, causing each sideto move in opposite directions. The Discovery Lab has begun collectingaluminum cans to use for the finallesson of the unit. Students, teachers, andcommunity members all helped, collectingover the targeted goal of 650 cans inthree weeks. The cans were transformedinto pop can speedsters. Each studentmade a speedster and explored how elasticpotential energy is stored in a twistedrubber band and converted to kineticenergy. The students enjoyed testing andracing their speedsters. The DiscoveryLab thanks everyone who helped in collectingcans during the unit.GHS Varsity Tennis TeamMAE Awards GSD TeacherMember of the YearEach year the MississippiAssociation of Educators (MAE)selects one of its members to representthe association as Memberof the Year.
