Technical InformationDensotan ATI/P 3324 eJune 2000 (DFC)Supersedes edition dated August 1999® = Registered trademark ofBASF AktiengesellschaftPlease file this leaflet in your“Wet-End” binder, Section 8Special polymer used in retannagesDensotan A is a novel type of polymer that is mainly applied to the leatherat the neutralization and retanning stages. It is very versatile, and it can beused to reduce the time required to retan leather and the consumption ofchemicals in the retanning process.Densotan A is lightfast, heat-resistant and particularly effective in theproduction of water-resistant leathers.Colorants and Finishing Products

Densotan AChemical natureAqueous anionic polymer solution, free of AOX and solvents.Solids content ca. 40%pH (diluted with demineralized water at 23 °C) ca. 7.5The above figures are approximate. A detailed specification is available onrequest.StorageThis product has a shelf life of at least one year if it is stored in its tightlysealed original packaging at temperatures between 5 °C and 40 °C.Drums should be tightly resealed each time material is taken from them, and their contents should be used up as soon as possible after they havebeen opened. This product must be protected from frost. The contents ofdrums should be stirred thoroughly before use.PropertiesDensotan A is an aqueous, polymer solution. It is supplied in the form of amobile, clear or slightly cloudy, yellow to brownish liquid. It is resistant tohard water and the salts and alkalis of monovalent metal ions.Densotan A has a pronounced dispersing effect, which causes it to improvethe distribution of other products that are applied to the leather at theneutralization and retanning stages of the process. This makes waterproofingmuch easier. Densotan A provides a very effective, economicalmeans of obtaining water-resistant leather, especially in combination withthe products in our Densodrin ® range. It also helps to avoid problems such as a drawn grain and unlevel dyeingwhich sometimes occur when water-resistant treatments are applied toleather.Densotan A is lightfast and resistant to yellowing at high temperatures andit has a neutral odour. It is particularly appropriate for retanning automotiveleathers, because it has very little tendency to fog.Densotan A also promotes the penetration of dye through thecross-section.ApplicationDensotan A can be applied either at the neutralization stage or in a freshbath immediately after neutralization. It needs to be applied at a rate of 4 – 8% at the neutralization or retanningstage, expressed as a proportion of the shaved weight, depending on thetype of leather and the desired effect. It is usually sufficient to apply Densotan A at a rate of 10% if it is used tostabilize fatliquor emulsions, expressed as a proportion of the fatliquorapplied.2
