THE WELFARE OF BROILER CHICKENS IN THE EUROPEAN UNION❍ Catch<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> birds to remove <strong>the</strong>m from <strong>the</strong> shedfor slaughter can result <strong>in</strong> unacceptably highlevels <strong>of</strong> stress, fractures and o<strong>the</strong>r traumatic<strong>in</strong>jury (SCAHAW, 2000, Sect. 7.8, Conclusion). There is <strong>in</strong>adequate legislation <strong>in</strong> protect <strong>broiler</strong><strong>welfare</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g transport. Across <strong>the</strong> EU, as manyas 18 - 35 million <strong>broiler</strong> <strong>chickens</strong> may dieannually dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> catch<strong>in</strong>g andtransport to <strong>the</strong> slaughterhouse.● The slaughter process, where <strong>broiler</strong>s are hungupside down <strong>in</strong> shackles and stunned by dipp<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong> electrified water baths, is also cause forconcern. Broilers <strong>of</strong>ten experience pa<strong>in</strong> andstruggle while hung <strong>in</strong> shackles and may sufferdur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> slaughter process. As many as 50million EU <strong>broiler</strong>s may be slaughtered while notfully unconscious. It is essential that sufficientstunn<strong>in</strong>g current is used and that both carotidarteries are cut to reduce <strong>the</strong> risk <strong>of</strong> birdsrega<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g consciousness dur<strong>in</strong>g bleed-out.● The scientific evidence shows that <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tensive<strong>broiler</strong> chicken <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>in</strong>flicts serious healthand <strong>welfare</strong> problems on <strong>the</strong> birds. The<strong>in</strong>dustry’s drive to ever faster growth rates leadsto pa<strong>in</strong>ful leg disorders and heart failure <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>birds reared for <strong>the</strong>ir meat and to severe foodrestriction and hunger <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> breed<strong>in</strong>g birds. Inaddition, <strong>the</strong> birds are <strong>of</strong>ten housed <strong>in</strong> shedsthat are too crowded and that subject <strong>the</strong>m tosuffer<strong>in</strong>g from sk<strong>in</strong> sores, uncomfortably hightemperatures and unhealthy levels <strong>of</strong> airpollution.● <strong>Compassion</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>World</strong> Farm<strong>in</strong>g Trust believesthat <strong>the</strong> EU should now take urgent action toaddress <strong>the</strong> serious health and <strong>welfare</strong> problems<strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>tensively farmed <strong>broiler</strong> <strong>chickens</strong>.29
