June 2011Page 3Rabbi’s Message: The Year of PrideWell, we made it to the end of anotheryear. By the time you read this, wewill have finished our last day ofreligious school, the last Bar Mitzvah of the season willbe behind us, and summer will be just around thecorner. Somehow it feels, all at once, as if the HighHolidays were just yesterday and 10 years ago. Timehas gone so fast, yet we have also accomplished, andbeen through, a great deal. I am tempted to list all ofthe fond memories I have of the year gone by, but Iwould hate to leave something out, or not mentionsomeone instrumental. Instead, I want to focus on anemotion.I am sure this will shock many of you, but Iwould like to talk about Pride. Now obviously I am kidding about the shock, because last year's High Holidays focused entirely onthe theme of pride. It was my buzz word for this year, and so I think it is only fitting that I bookend the yearby writing my final Honey Jar article about pride. Myhope for this year was that we would develop a deepsense of pride in what we are able to accomplishtogether at Ohev Shalom. As I write these words, somany memories are flooding back to me, times when Iindeed felt deeply proud to be involved with thiscongregation. I invite you to take a minute to reflectfor yourself: Was there something in this past year thatled you to feel proud of Ohev? Were you personallyinvolved, or was it perhaps a family member? Was itsomething primarily for congregants, or perhaps opento the wider community? Was it a single, isolatedmoment, or did it leave a lasting impression? There are two reasons why I didn't mentionspecific events, and one is because I want you toremember your own. Every person finds meaning insomething different. Community is not about alwaysdoing the same things, all of us together; it's aboutoffering a vast array of activities and opportunities, sothat we can all find meaning and holiness in a sharedspace. The second reason was already stated at thebeginning of this article. I want to focus on emotionand perception rather than specific events. Success isnot rooted in tangible, measurable factors, it beginswith a shift in attitude. We are doing well, because youand I feel like we're doing well. All year long, I'veheard people say, "There's always so much going on atthe synagogue!" Last month I even heard that fromone of the leaders of the United Synagogue ofConservative Judaism. She oversees 104 congregations, and told me that Ohev Shalom comes up inconversation all the time. What a thrill to hearsomething like that about our synagogue! So I hope that you share my sense of pride inour community. That feeling will carry us through thesummer into the exciting year ahead. Next year we willhave another theme word. If you want to know whatit is, you'll have to come to High Holiday services tofind out. But even as we focus on a new value or idea(and this next one won't also be one of the SevenDeadly Sins...), let's not forget about Pride. This yearwe kept talking about Journeys, even though that waslast year's theme, and so 2009-2010! As we move intoour third year together, let us hold onto all oursuccesses and wonderful memories, yet also look aheadto the fabulous times that await us.I wish everyone a terrific summer filled withrelaxation, warmth, family, fun, maybe a slight tan, good food, lots of sleep, at least a few days ofsomething you LOVE doing, an adventure or two, agood book or two, health, satisfaction, andrejuvenation. And as we say around the synagogueoffice: Have a Safe Summer!Sincerely,Rabbi GerberSpeaking of Pride ...A big Thank You to Ruth Kaplan and Bea Ernest for bringing our silver Heritage Collection back to life.Stop in the hallway and see it shine!

Page 4The Honey JarPresident’s Compass: The Blessing of GratitudeAt this year’s Hall of Fame Awards service,Elsa Wachs reminded us of the Jewishprecept of Hakarat Ha Tov, “gratitude,”which literally translates as “recognizing the good.”She of course was speaking of all the good done byour new Hall of Fame members Cathy Yeager, BernieMissan, and Sally Balin z”l. But she could have beenspeaking of so many of you who have made my firstyear as President such a pleasure. In our rush to accomplish specific goals atOhev Shalom – like the newly repaved parking lot youcan anticipate in June (go, Josh!) – we often forgetthat relishing milestones is important. So, as I writefor this year’s last issue of The Honey Jar, I’m goingto jump off my goal-oriented train to congratulateseveral of you on significant awards andaccomplishments, of which we can all beproud. Our very own Kathy Elias will takeon leadership training for USCJ on anational level, but will still manage tosqueeze in facilitating our board retreat thisfall – thank you, Kathy! She led afabulous first Ateret Kavod reception forUSCJ honorees from approximatelytwenty synagogues in Pennsylvania andNew Jersey on May 11 at Har Zion.Winning the award for our shul was AmyPollack who was recognized for her manyvolunteer roles as board member andnewsletter editor, chair and co-chair offundraising events, the Kadima CapitalCampaign, Synaplex, and the RabbiTransition Committee, and designer of numerousinvitations, Kadima Campaign materials, and our new“identity package,” i.e., logo, stationery, and websitelook. We have benefited tremendously from herdevotion to Ohev Shalom and from the pro bonoservices of her firm (see her company’s website,www.twistnshout.com).We also just learned that our new USY chapterhas received a prestigious award for its membershiprecruitment efforts. Special thanks to Mike Fackenthall,USY Chapter President, and his leadership team ofVice Presidents Talia Kaplan, Ruth Cohen, RachelErnest, Seth Fein, Alyssa and Kaitlin Graham, andEthan Tashman, as well as Curt Krouse, Youth Chairon the board, and Matt Rosenbaum, our Youth GroupCoordinator. They have brought new enthusiasm notonly to USY, but also to our new Kadima Chapter. And, we are grateful to Rabbi Gerber who haspromised to award first year USY memberships to ourupcoming B’nai Mitzvah students this year as a way tofurther promote USY involvement. We’re lookingforward to an even more exciting array of youthactivities next year!Speaking of Mike Fackenthall, fresh off his tourin the Ohev Shalom show, as I write this, he ispreparing for his next performance as a finalist inKathy Elias and award recipient Amy Harris Pollack.Jewish Federation’s “A Song in My Heart” celebrationof Israel’s 63 rd anniversary of independence, which is/was at Penn’s Landing on May 22. The winner willperform at Jewish Heritage Night at the Phillies onAugust 18. Page 14The Honey JarMispallelim: Chocolate Israel CakeWhenever I’m congratulated by acongregant or a visitor for doingsuch a good job training our B’naiMitzvah, my standard response is to say “Thank you.I am so fortunate to be blessed with good students.”But truth be told, that is only half the actual reasonour children do so well on the bimah. The other halfis that I am also blessed with good teachers!Finding teachers for a religious school such asours is difficult, as there is a real shortage of qualifiedteachers who are willing to work for the few workinghours per year we can provide them. Finding “good”teachers (dedicated people who are willing to give uptheir Sunday mornings to be in our classrooms) iseven more difficult. And yet our school is blessed tohave nine very dedicated and gifted people whocontinue to do a most excellent job in teaching ourchildren how to be Jewish. This past Sunday (May 15) Morah RonitTehrani and Morah Yana List did a geography lessonwith their 1 st and 2 nd grade students by baking cakes. These were no ordinary cakes. They were loaves ofchocolate cake which the students made themselves. Then, they carefully decorated the cakes with a mapof Israel using different colored icings to representdeserts, forests, or seas. They even used chocolatechips to show the mountains in the north. Best of all B’Shalom, they got to take the cakes home to share with their Cantor Friedrichfamilies so that all could share in a “taste” of EretzYisrael. Our building smelled super-sweet all morning.Best of all, the cakes were (yum!) delicious. So you see, it is our teachers who make beingJewish so much fun. It is our teachers who reallyshould be congratulated whenever our children dowell on the bimah. It is to our teachers that we oweour thanks. Our students do so well because they areblessed with such good teachers. It is an unbeatablecombination. So I wish to extend my sincerest thanksto this year’s Mispallelim teachers: Cathy Baum,Preschool; Ronit Tehrani, Aleph; Yana List, Bet;Karen Ernest, Gimel; Heidi Diamond, Daled; ChanaDickter, Hey; Dena Young and Henry Dickson, Vav;and Matthew Rosenbaum, Zayin. You are a mostdedicated and talented faculty. Our Religious School came to an end this pastmonth, with an awards ceremony and graduation ofour 7 th grade students. There were many awardsgiven, and I am most pleased to announce the topaward winners here:Top Students – Emily Shor, Aleph class; AlyseWicentowski, Bet class; and Evan Hoffman, Gimelclass. The Sparkler Award, given to the top studentsin the Daled, Hey and Vav classes (grades 4, 5 & 6)went respectively to Heather Adelsberg, Leah Cohenand Jay Fein. The Bernstein Award, given annually tothe top student in the 7 th grade, was awarded this yearto Daniel Kaplan. I am also pleased to announcethere were three students who tied for best attendanceat Junior Congregation. They were Meredith Bermanand Kayla Finsterbusch, both in Gimel class (3); andWilliam Chalker of the Vav class (6). Other classleaders for service attendance were Alyse Wicentowski(1), Aubrey Tillman (4), Abigail Schwartz (5) andDaniel Kaplan (7).Finally, I wish to give special congratulations toour graduating 7 th graders: Avery Brown, Seth Fein,Jeffrey Himelstein, Daniel Kaplan, Harrison Rovnerand Etai Stern. I look forward to seeing many moreaccomplishments from them all in the future.PS – Registration packets for school year 5772(2011-12) have been given out, along with apreliminary calendar for the next school year. Campaign:Severe government budget cuts and increased operating costs have created a very disturbing financial problem foremergency shelters in Delaware County. The shelters in CAADC’s emergency housing system face large operatingdeficits. CAADC has already determined that it must close the Colony Building Shelter by June 30, 2011 causing theloss of 12 shelter units for families. The Agency has started the Saves Our Shelters (S.O.S.) Campaign to make surethat no more shelters need to close including the Family Management Center, Wesley House Shelter and the LifeCenter. Last year these shelters were a vital part of the County’s safety net for homeless families and individualsincluding helping 277 homeless children stay with their families and many homeless veterans and senior citizens. The S.O.S. Campaign is a cooperative effort between CAADC and the faith-based community. CAADC and the S.O.S.Steering Committee (comprised of representatives from local churches) is reaching out to area churches, synagoguesand mosques in Delaware County to help bridge the shelter funding gaps. We are asking each church, synagogue ormosque to consider a contribution of $100, $500, $1,000 or more for this effort through their discretionary budget, afundraising event/dinner or through a special collection.
