Charles P. PriceMia Kornelis, violinWELCOME AND OPENING PRAYERII. MISSA ECLECTICAIt wasn’t until the fourteenth century that composers began to think of themovements of a mass as parts of a unified whole; Guillaume de Machaut’s(ca.1300-1377) Messe de Notre Dame is considered to be the first to do so. Untilthat time, musical settings of the various mass texts were grouped together, with allthe Glorias in one place, all the Credos in another, and so on, and settings wouldbe selected without consideration of any unifying element. In today’s postmodernculture, a similar “pick-and-mix” approach has become popular, often juxtaposingor combining strikingly different styles—witness a recent recording of Gregorianchant with superimposed jazz saxophone. In this portion of our program, we presentsettings representing five very different styles and historical periods, in no particularorder. Whether you choose to think of it as “neo-medieval” or “postmodern,” we hopeyou enjoy this eclectic assembling of mass text settings.Kyrie (from Petit messe solennelle)Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868)Kyrie eleison.Christe eleison.Kyrie eleison.Lord, have mercy.Christ, have mercy.Lord, have mercy.

ConCert Choir tour programLove Never FailsJ.A.C. Redford (b.1953)If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels but have not love,I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge,And if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love,I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.Love is patient, love is kind,Love leaves envy far behind.Never boastful, proud or rude,Love rejoices with the truth.Slow to anger, stores no wrongs,Love will never seek its own.Love does not delight in sin,It bears all things, believes all things,Love hopes all things, endures all things.Love never fails.Prophecies some day will cease,As for tongues they will be stilled.Knowledge, it will pass away,Yet love remains, it hopes all things,Believes all things, endures all things.Love never fails. – I Corinthians 13:1-8, adapted J.A.C. Ben Parry (b.1965)The hauntingly beautiful David of the White Rock (Dafydd y Gareg Wen) is thought to have been composed by the short-livedWelsh bard, David Owens (1712-1741). Tradition has it that Owens called for his harp while on his deathbed, composedthis lovely tune, and asked that it be played at his funeral. The lyrics, describing the song’s origin, were added later by theWelsh poet Ceiriog Hughes.“Carrwch,” medd Dafydd, “fy nhelyn I miCeisiaf cyn marw roi tôn arni hiCodwch fy nwy law I gyrhaedd y tantDuw a’ch bendithio fy ngweddw a’m plant.”“Carry,” said David, “my harp to me.I would like, before dying, to give a tune on it (her)Lift my hands to reach the stringsGod bless you, my widow and child.”David the Bard on his bed of death liesPale are his features and dim are his eyes,Yet all around him his gaze wildly roves‘Til it alights on the harp that he loves.Give me my harp my companion so long,Let it once more add its voice to my song.Harp of my country, dear harp of the brave,Let thy last notes linger over my grave. – Ceiriog Hughes (1832-1887)Mia Kornelis, soprano

Pontas Purba (b.1953)This song is a setting of a “pantun,” a traditional Malay poetic form that expresses a riddle with hidden meaning. Frequently, the initiallines are meaningless but establish a rhythm and rhyme for the second part of the text, which carries the enigmatic meaning of the poem.Siksik si batu manikkam ni parjoget,Sor ma di gottam di na mangingani.Si bambangkara jula-jula,Si bambangkara jula-jula.Habang birrik-birrik, santabi loloan on,Dipatangkas dipatilik bohi nahurapon on.Dang tutu sihupi ianggo so marsuga suga,Dang tutu na uli ianggo so denggan marroha.(These lines do not have any meaning. They are only funny lines that rhyme,And lead to the rest of the text.)(No meaning—written to rhyme with the next line:)The more you look you can see that my face has blemishes.(No meaning—written to rhyme with the next line:)Beauty is worthless if you don’t have a beautiful character.Kristina Haan, sopranoMaria Bouwkamp, altoJake Miller, tenorGøtaPeder Karlsson (b.1963)“Gøta” was inspired by the people and the nature of the Faroe Islands.
