CHAIRMAN’SREPORTWilliam H. Connolly, Jr.H’91Iam pleased to tell you that our school has managed anothervery successful and healthy year. You’ll no doubt be asimpressed as my Board colleagues and I are with the rangeof accomplishments that our young men achieved with thetalented and dedicated teaching, coaching, and counselingthey benefit from every day. Those of us privileged to serve the school as Boardmembers hear throughout the year of the victories of oursports teams, the talents of our student actors, the prizeswon by our writers and journalists and the amazing workstretching the curriculum to span the countries of Asia –representing the far-reaching curiosities and imaginations ofour faculty working on yet another multi-disciplinary topic. We take as a given that our young men will gain admission toa range of excellent colleges, as 98 percent did this past year. For its part, the Board maintained its vigilanceon the school’s financial health and assisted with a significantre-structuring of the abbey and school’s long-termdebt, incurred when we renovated extensively and built thefirst-ever dormitory and a new grammar school building in1999-2001. While our new students and their families can’timagine St. Benedict’s any other way, we remember a schoolwithout the Leahy House, or the beautifully re-configuredand renovated cafeteria and auditorium in the buildingappropriately re-named Cawley Hall, after the man whosevision and drive inspired these magnificent improvements. Two other tasks occupied the Board’s attention. OneBoard member with extensive management consulting experienceand an equally talented and dedicated volunteer alumnusenlisted a core of current Benedict’s teachers and administratorsfor a thorough review of the school’s organization. They identifiedthe best new leadership to work with Fr. Edwin to move theschool into the future. And we conducted a broad search for a newdevelopment leader, who possessed the requisite experience andskills to lead the school’s next capital campaign. We completedboth tasks and believe the results will prove themselves in the nextfew years. We vowed this year to examine how we, the Board, canrenew and re-charge our own efforts. That exercise has led us to are-structuring with some new committees that must be as effectivein service to the school as our Finance Committee has been. Nextyear I’ll report on how this Board renewal has positioned us tohelp St. Benedict’s move confidently into its new campaign to assurethe school’s future for many decades. I offer my own thanksto all who help our extraordinary school to continue to workmiracles each day.1

HEADMASTER’SREPORTRev. Edwin D. LeahyO.S.B. ’63Repeatedly throughout the last school year I thoughtit was a good one, with steady efforts leading to visibleresults across the board, but with nothing really exceptionalto boast about. On reflection, a year when we began animportant transition in school leadership structure, when wereceived renewed accreditation from Middle States, and whichended with 98% of our seniors receiving college acceptancesfrom 130 different schools – among some other achievements– was a pretty outstanding school year by most measures. We have come to expect outstanding results fromour students, teachers and coaches. A few state prep championshipsare virtually the minimum acceptable results forour athletic teams. This year we met that mark again with oursoccer and fencing teams while our track team won the EssexCounty Championships in cross-country and indoor andoutdoor track – the first time our runners have done that inyears. We also basked in the spotlight of the growing accomplishmentsof Edward Cheserek, our gift from the Maryknollersin Kenya, who quickly came to be seen as one ofthe country’s best young distance runners.Flourishing student achievements in the fine andperforming arts, and in writing, have become quite a strongelement of our academic life. In recent years, a band ofteachers have formed a cohesive, dynamic nucleus of multidisciplinarywork, leading our students to explore in somedepth topics like Romanticism or regions of the world, suchas Asia and India, that often fall outside of the curriculum.During this past year, students have explored Asian art, music, drama, and culture, and topics in science that relatestrongly to these areas. Our hallways and cafeteria gleamedwith murals, sculptures, and banners with images and motifsfrom Japan to China to India — capturing what students hadcome to appreciate creatively. In fall and spring, two culminatingexhibits and performances, including the Drama Guildproduction of Yellow Face, a play about a Chinese-American’ssense of identity, demonstrated their understanding of facetsof Asian cultures to the entire school community. Our writers, whether in the Benedict News orthe special spring edition of our literary magazine, Kayrix, performed at a very high level. Many thought the springissue of the Kayrix may be one of the most outstanding wehave seen, and the Scholastic Press Association at Columbiaagreed by awarding the issue a gold medal. Our students alsoparticipated successfully in the Newark High School writingcontest, sponsored by the MFA Program in Creative Writingat Rutgers-Newark, with several award winning pieces. We could count all these as, in the words of onewriter, the “ordinary miracles” that we come to expect. Alldepend, year after year, on all the “ordinary miracles” thatour alumni and friends perform through their unstinting andgenerous help. For all of that, we are most grateful.3

DEVELOPMENTREPORTPaul E. Thornton ’63Those who work on gift-giving as we do on behalfof our students and faculty are “half-full” people. Weare always encouraged by the continual expressionsof support from alumni and friends, often from people whoknow us now only through e-mails, appeal letters and thesedays, our website and videos. Their responses – no matterhow small or large – always give us hope that our messagesconvey how much their support means for the mission ofteaching and learning that our faculty, monks and dedicatedmen and women, carry on with our students each day.2011 was a curiously uneven year for us in development. We placed new energies into identifying more foundationsand friends who might support us, and several newmajor responses followed. This doesn’t always happen, butthis past year it did. One new family foundation, the GrossmanFamily Foundation, that had some business involvementin Newark some years back, responded to our appeal for new, substantial support for our Leahy House residence programwith a $500,000 grant, one of the largest one-time grants wehave ever received. Another new contact with a history of supportfor Catholic schools in the Newark Archdiocese lookedwith special favor on us and made a commitment that willyield over $1 million over the next five years. We also receivedstrong added support for our highly successful counselingprogram, which serves all students who need it and directsspecial attention to the young men in Leahy House. We also received critical sustaining support fromour alumni and friends, who gave annual dollars in amountsthat fell a little short of our goal, but still provided the solidbase of funding for all our programs. The special foundationsupport noted above made up for the slight fall-off in alumniand friends support. There were other bright signs in our annual appeal, which led 30 percent of our alumni to contribute. The 50thReunion class of 1961 set a new record for participation with70 percent of the class responding, many with their largesteversingle gift to St. Benedict’s, yielding a total of $212,000,fully six times the amount of their previous year’s giving. Ahuge increase in support and attendance, especially from ouryounger alumni, bolstered our St. Benedict’s Dinner, whichhonored two longtime coaches – Mike DiPiano H’82 (alsoathletic director 1977 – 2010) and Rick Jacobs H’90, as wellas Tom McCabe H’02, author of Miracle on High Street. The year ended with another miracle: Eric Ross, whom we made an honorary alumnus in 2009 to recognizehis decades of help to us in honor of his lifelong friendshipwith Tom Durkin ’43, provided a $1 million bequest forscholarships in honor of Tom and his family. We have alwayscherished our friendship with this former Newark industrialist, widely known for his philanthropy to Jewish organizationsboth local and national. His bequest perpetuates hisgenerosity to us and his bond with the Durkin family. We could not succeed in our efforts withouttremendous volunteer support. Year-in and year-out thatcomes from both our Board members, who are occasionallyrecognized for their help, and from our alumni class agents, rarely given the recognition they deserve, for they write theletters and make the calls to, and plead and cajole and more, their classmates to urge them to support us.Perhaps no one recently has exemplified thatgenerous service more than Kevin Moore ’64, who devotedthe entire academic year to helping us organize our developmentefforts to greater effect. Our successful year, raising$5,197,000 in annual and capital gifts and pledges, is due inno small part to his fresh eyes and enthusiasm for meetingour challenge to support the inspiring work each day withour students.5

But he sees his job as not onlyintroducing kids to schools but helping to insure their success.Sometimes that means helping a student apply to anIvy League college, but it can also mean suggesting a studentspend two years locally at a community college where he cancontinue to develop the skills and confidence necessary tosuccess at a four year institution. And he makes himself available to Gray Bees whenthey are ready to make the transition after two years. Thisapproach makes our 95 percent college matriculation rate amore nuanced but meaningful statistic in which we can alltake pride.Alan J. NEW ADMINISTRATORSIvan Lamourt ’82, Michelle Tuorto, and Mike Scanlan H’97weren’t exactly working in the shadows at St. Benedict’s beforeJanuary 2011. With a collective 44 years at the Hive, each hadalready amassed considerable experience — Ivan as a teacher, coachand counselor; Michelle as a teacher and head of the science department;and Mike as assistant headmaster, finance adviser, facilitiesmanager and moderator of the student-run 520 Corp facilitiesmaintenance company. But a careful organizational study led by Don Laurie ’60and Kevin Moore ’64 in the fall of 2010 resulted in an administrativestructure that would both address faculty concerns likeprofessional development, intra-school communication and studentdiscipline, and spread to others some of Fr. Edwin’s responsibilitiesfor day-to-day operations.Ivan, Michelle and Mike were tapped to take on threenew or revived positions. As the new Assistant Headmaster, Ivan ischarged with overseeing the day-to-day operations of the school.Michelle, now Dean of Faculty, manages the recruitment, development, and retention of the faculty, supporting and supervisingteachers in instruction, classroom management, and best practices.Mike, as Dean of Student Life, is responsible for supporting studentsoutside the regular academic routine, including everything fromimplementing the Group System, overseeing the student leadershipstructure and developing programs to motivate students and rewardpositive behavior and performance.22Joseph P. Donohue, Jr.VOLUNTEERINGMost non-profits consider themselves lucky if theirregular volunteers donate a number of hours each week, keep a routine that is good for them and their organizations, and find the volunteer’s talents a “good fit” for them and thevolunteer. In 2010-11, we may have had the “superstar” ofvolunteers in Kevin Moore’ 64. If he was inspired by theexample of young Benedictine volunteers who gave a year oftheir lives in service to St. Benedict’s, we don’t know, butKevin decided on the same commitment of a year of service. So he arrived in July 2010, moved into Leahy House in lateJuly and stayed at full-time work for us right through Graduation2011. Living in Leahy House, he was an informal tutorand counselor, getting to know our resident students and developinga real feel for the improvements that would enhanceLeahy House and St. Benedict’s.These were his incidental contributions. Reluctantly,Kevin recognized that although he didn’t want to do“fund-raising,” development was where we most needed theenergy and focus he brought. His years in management andconsulting, following his Annapolis days and a 20-year Navycareer, gave him an unusual set of executive skills to bring tothe myriad challenges of a small staff charged with producinga large annual fund of over $4 million. His fresh perspectiveand great work ethic helped lead our Annual Fund to anothersuccessful year, marked by some breakthrough foundationgifts, including a major grant for our Leahy House programs. No doubt his wife, Pat, deserves kudos for her sacrifice forthe Benedict’s cause as well.Jerome J. OMNES PARITERSOCIETYall together -planned giving toensure the futureOmnes Pariter, “all together” in the original Latin of the Rule of Saint Benedict, perfectly describes the ethos ofour school, where students live by the motto “Whatever hurts my brother, hurts me.” The Omnes Pariter Society offersalumni, family, and friends the chance to live out this philosophy through planned giving to St. Benedict’s Prep.Planned giving – in the form of bequests, charitable trusts, or other gift instruments – signifies a long-termcommitment to the school and its mission, the continuation of a well-established relationship. The name also pointsto the cumulative effect of giving. Each individual gift becomes more effective when joined with the generosity ofother donors. We do need to work “all together” to help St. Benedict’s sustain and strengthen its dedication to theyoung men we serve.Everyone who indicates the intention to make a planned gift to St. Benedict’s Prep is welcomed in the OmnesPariter Society. We gratefully acknowledge in memoriam those members who have made such gifts and have gone to theireternal rest.36In Memoriam MembersNora AquilonDr. Henry BarkhornHoward E. WAYS TO GIVEpix38ANNUAL FUNDThe Annual Fund is the cornerstone of giving to St. Benedict’sand primarily funds scholarship aid, which assists three-quartersof our students with direct tuition aid grants, and includes the“silent scholarship” subsidy all students receive. The school canalso put such unrestricted gifts to use in areas where theyare most needed.CAPITAL GIFTSCapital Gifts are gifts specifically restricted by the donor toimprove school facilities or increase permanent financial assetsas endowment funds.ENDOWMENT FUNDSEndowment funds ensure St. Benedict’s future as a school infidelity to our mission. Gifts specified for endowment purposescan be designated to support scholarships, teacher salaries, orgeneral purposes, as well as to fund new program development.MEMORIAL GIFTSA gift in memory of someone you love or admire can be aparticularly meaningful way to contribute to St. Benedict’s.A memorial gift may be made to the Annual Fund or asa capital gift and may be restricted or unrestricted.FORMS A GIFT CAN TAKE✤ CASH: The simplest form of gift. An outright gift of cashqualifies as a charitable deduction for federal income tax purposes.Current tax laws allow you to deduct the full amount of the giftin the year in which it is given, provided the gift is not morethan 50 percent of your adjusted gross income that year. If over50 percent, the excess can be carried forward and deducted thefollowing year or for up to five years until the deduction isused up.You can give your cash gift online at the websitewww.sbp.org by following the link “make a donation.” Youcan also give your cash or credit card gift as a recurring gift paidin installments.✤ SECURITIES: A gift of securities, stocks, or bonds entitles thegiver to an income tax deduction; a gift of appreciatedsecurities may also reduce capital gains tax liability. To transfer securities, please contact our Advancement Officeat (973) 792-5779 or pbenavides@sbp.org for full details.✤ REAL ESTATE: A gift of real estate to St. Benedict’s providesthe donor an income tax benefit as well as possibly reducingcapital gains since the market value of appreciated property isdeductible.✤ CORPORATE MATCHING GIFTS: Many businesses havematching gift programs which will multiply contributions toSt. Benedict’s by two, three, or even four times the amount onedonates. If you are employed by a company that has a matchinggift program, we urge you to take advantage of it wheneverpossible. Some companies also match the gifts of directors, spouses, and retirees. Since they are available from contributingfirms each year, matching gifts can be a great boost as part ofyour regular giving to St. Benedict’s. Forms and instructionscan be obtained from your employer.✤ BEQUESTS: A bequest is a gift by a will. It can be given as aspecific amount, as a percentage of an estate, or as a remaindershare. Many alumni, friends, and families of St. Benedict’sgraduates make gifts through bequests to perpetuate lasting tiesto the school and ensure its future. If you have already written a will and would like to adda provision for St. Benedict’s without redrawing the entiredocument, you may do so by means of a codicil, a legal additionor amendment to an existing will.A bequest to St. Benedict’s reduces the size of thetaxable portion of an estate and may thus lower federal estatetax liability.Your attorney and accountant can help you create a willor codicil that includes your provisions for relatives, your taxsituation, and your philanthropic intentions for St. Benedicts. The federal tax laws encourage charitable giving. Thesegifts may be given in the names of loved ones honored orremembered through them. In 2010-11, 424 students, threequartersof our student body, received financial aid totaling$1,940,300. The average aid was $4,576 toward our tuitionof $8,250.In recent years the Lobo family has developed asignificant scholarship endowment in the memory of John C.Lobo ’52, one of four Lobo brothers who attended St. Benedict’s,Paul ’46, Walter ’47, and Philip ’59. The first recipient of theJohn C. Lobo ’52 Scholarship, Giovanni Urquilla, graduatedin June, 2011, and is now at Johns Hopkins.Another approach appealed to the Barkhorn Family, which discovered a scholarship established long ago in honorof Dr. Henry Barkhorn, grandfather of Henry Barkhorn, III,who, through his family foundation, decided to renew thisscholarship through annual gifts. The first recent recipientof the Barkhorn Scholarship, Fritz Bondoa, also graduated in2011, and is now at the University of Virginia.

ANNUAL DINNER2011More than any Dinner in recent memory, this year’s eventrecognized the contributions of three men to the dailylife of the school and their direct impact on studentsover decades. Both Mike DiPiano Sr. H’82 in his roles as headwrestling coach for over twenty years and athletic director for threedecades, and Rick Jacobs H’90, who turned the St. Benedict’ssoccer team into a national powerhouse in his quarter century ashead coach, became “legends in their own time.”The outpouring of support by the student athleteswhose lives they helped to shape was vivid testimony to theirimpact. The impact Tom McCabe H’02 had on studentsoverlapped some with that of Rick Jacobs, since, while serving ascollege counselor, he also assisted Rick with soccer for mostof his years here. But Tom’s greater impact, for which he wasduly recognized at the dinner, stems from his first majorbook – Miracle on High Street. His is the first everhistory of St. Benedict’s – engagingly told from a scholarlyinsider’s perspective. The Annual Dinner managed at thesame time to serve its original purpose: to bring together morethan 400 St. Benedict’s alumni and friends, including manycorporate and professional benefactors, to raise substantialfunds for student financial aid. This year the dinner and silent auction yielded$240,000.41

Montesdeoca ’94Reverend Peter Winstead’s LegacyThe joy of St. Benedict’s June 6, 2011 commencementexercise was tempered by our sadness at hearing ofthe death that morning of our beloved leader of song,Rev. Peter Winstead H ‘08. For 22 years “Rev” was acentral part of the St. Benedict’s experience, leadingthe school’s Convocation three mornings a week withhis inspirational songs (he wrote all his own lyrics andmusic). The Spirit was constantly giving him new songsfor his ministry, so that those that were favorites in 1990were likely to be unknown to the students of 2010. Thetheme, however, was always the same: God is alwayswatching over you, caring for you and helping you toovercome life’s challenges so that you can become thegreat person He had in mind when He created you.No one who ever heard him at Convocation willever forget the way he stood at the piano and liftedour spirits by making Shanley Gym come alive withshouts of praise and confidence in God. Nor will any ofus soon forget the sound of 570 teenagers singing withgusto the words that would carry them through the day.Words such as “There’s a lotta stuff goin’ on in my life, but God is good,” and “God has never lost a battle, don’tgive up!”In recent years despite his failing health hewould push himself to come to morning Convocation, giving us a living example of the faith and couragethat he had taught us to sing about: “Stay up! Don’t letnothin’ get you down.”At a memorial Convocation on Sept 23, 2011Rev. Winstead’s sister and several members of hischurch heard the students sing and shout the “Rev’s”music, assuring them and all of us that not just his spiritbut his songs will live on in our hearts.46
