Volume 23, Issue 3 Quarterly Newsletter Summer 2006
Message From Our New President—Herb Hall
“The best chapter in all of
ACBS”. I made this statement
at the Wood and Glory event
at Clear Lake and I am more
convinced of it every day. Apparently
so do others as we
now stand at 612 member
families. We have now completed
10 very successful and
fun events so far. All were well
attended and very well run. Kudos’ go to Cary Winslow
for Bass Lake, Jack Bingham and crew for Wood
and Glory, Chuck Kelly for the Shriners display and
Dave Lyon for Crossing of the Chris Crafts. Not to be
forgotten is Tom O’Rourke who organizes the Woodie
Whoopies at Tahoe. These events take a major effort
to put on and wouldn’t happen without these dedicated
people.
On July 8 th we had a wonderful Lake Circumnavigation
organized by Greg Joseph. This was a substitute
event for the canceled Tahoe Keys show. It looks like
the Keys Show will return next year, but the Circumnavigation
was a great event and will probably become
a permanent addition to our future schedule.
Next up is our ships store at the Concours. Please
contact Rich Fisher if you want help out. Tuesday after
the Concours, is the ACBS Cruise and Picnic at
Meeks Bay campground. John Lahti is organizing this
event and would be happy for helpers as well.
Things are shaping up well for the International Boat
Show and meeting in September. As of this writing all
the pre-events were sold out except for 30 spots for
Thunderbird Lodge. Jeff Peterson is heading up the
pre- events schedule and these events have proven
to be very popular. Tom O’Rourke and Bob Bush are
in charge of the boat show and meeting and things
are shaping up nicely. Many have signed up for the
pre-events but as of yet, have not registered for the
annual show and meeting. Just a reminder, the fee
for the International Meeting and Show goes up after
the 1 st of August.
This will be a great show and unlike the Concours, it
will be far more low-key. We will be allowing people
to take their boats out for boat rides, so the boats are
not locked in to a two day show. Also, the cost for the
public is only $5.00, so the show is very affordable.
Encourage everyone you know to come up and see
it. Additionally, we will have an excellent display of
vintage cars and Mercedes Gull Wings. We are also
moving ahead with plans for a series of Restoration
Workshops during the two day event. It should be a
great week.
Badges? , we don’t need to stinking badges! But they
do come in handy at events when you are meeting a
lot of people for the first time and can’t remember
their name 30 seconds later. Greg Joseph has included
an order form for a nicely designed brass
name badge with a cloisonné of our chapter burgee. I
would encourage every member to look for the order
form in this newsletter and get one.
That’s all for now, see you on the water.
At the recent ACBS International Quarterly
meeting held in Chicago, nominations
for officers and directors for the upcoming
year were announced. At the top of the slate,
nominated for President, is Bob Bush, long
time member of the No/Cal Lake Tahoe
Chapter. Bob is a past President of the
Nor/ Cal Chapter and has served on the International
Board since 1998, most recently as
Senior VP. He will assume the office at the
upcoming Annual Meeting being held at the
Hyatt at Lake Tahoe in September.
The above message is from international. If you
have been to some of our chapter events you may
have already had the pleasure of meeting Bob and
his wife Arlene. Bob was our chapter president in
1998. They both enjoy the boating aspect of our
club, but also the social. Their boats are always
full of fun loving people, some friends, some family.
Bob has passed his love of boats along to his
son Tim. Tim Bush became a board member of
our chapter in 2004 and he and his wife Teri have
chaired the committee for the Pleasanton Boat
Show for the last 2 years. When you see Bob and
his family this summer and at the
Int’l boat show and meeting, make
sure you take a moment to introduce
yourself. You won’t regret
it. - Sandy Chase

Page 8 Western Wood
By Greg Joseph
We had a great Woodie Whoopie scheduled for Friday, July 7 th , and a Board meeting for Sunday morning the 9 th , but with the cancellation
of the Keys Show, nothing for Saturday the 8 th . As the chair of the ill fated show, I felt I should try to find an alternative.
I had heard TYC and Riva Club people talking about organized trips around the lake (both clubs have done it) and thought it would
be a good way to get ACBS people together and do some boating. I had talked it up at functions and meetings and was getting a
favorable response, so I decided to give it a go. It turned out to be short on logistics, because there wasn’t a big response to the
blurb in the Western Wood. I was prepared to have food and drinks provided (with the expert help of Ellen Swensen) but it turned
out to be a BYO everything event, which went just fine.
Micki and I started out at 9:15 from the east harbor of the Keys in our CC 20’ Custom, Genevieve, and quickly met up with Steve
and Cheryl Caplan in their 28’ CC cruiser, Viking. Riding with them was Steve’s mother, Rae, who was celebrating her 88 th birthday.
Cheryl told us to soft peddle it about the you-know-what day thing because Rae was not particularly in a celebratory mood
about it. We all obliged, but now that it’s over……Happy Birthday Rae!
As we all know by now (or should), there is no guarantee on the weather at Tahoe and planning things out on the lake is a crap
shoot. Well, the dice were good to us because it was a gorgeous day. Cruising from the Keys to our first rendezvous point at Rubicon
Bay was very pleasant. We were to meet the Pumphreys and the Ludwigs, but got a cell call from Kirk as we were passing
Emerald Bay reluctantly bowing out due to pressing needs as chairman of the Concours d’Elegance (c’mon Kirk, come up with
something original next time).
No sign of the Ludwigs either, so we buzzed Meeks Bay and continued on to our advertised starting point at Obexer’s. We arrived
right at the specified time, 10:00, with a big 26’ Riva Triton, Eleven-Eleven, right on our tail. We had evidently just missed Barry
and Jenny at Meeks, who had Skip and Lin Stahmer with them. Waiting at Obexer’s were Lee and Sandy Chase with Dave Lyon in
the Chases’ beautiful 28’ Sea Lyon. Also staged were Bill and Mary Jo Hutchins in their unique 25’ CC double cockpit, Blind
Faith.
Well, we were off! We cruised the west shore, on past Tahoe City Marina and picked up Bob and Ellen Swensen in their 20’ CC
Sportsman, Tucker (it was named after a cat – don’t you know). Riding with the Swensens were Steve and Pamela Burton, who are
selling their 20’ CC Riviera, Bleach Blonde.
Next stop was Sierra Boat, where we picked up Herb Hall (solo) in his 19’ Riva Junior, Selvaggio. Apparently Barbara had picked
up a particularly nasty flu bug and was home wearing a porcelain necklace. Sorry to hear that, Barb. Nothing personal, but better
you than me - hope you are better now. Also arriving at Sierra Boat was Roy Dryer in his 18’ Riva Junior, Friva, with Jared (party
animal) Hein along for the ride. Evidently, Roy was preparing to leave Obexer’s when we were there, but we took off without him.
Sorry Roy, we didn’t do it on purpose.
Off we were again and about Incline, we picked up Dave Lobb in his big Lyman with Greg Rudloff as co-pilot. There was also a
CC Capri traveling along with us that we are calling the mystery boat because when we stopped for lunch, they kept on going. We
all bobbed in the deep water off of the Thunderbird Lodge and ate lunch and visited. What a setting and with all the woodies gathered
we attracted photographers and sightseers. And did I mention it was a gorgeous day?
When we were getting ready to continue on, Steve Caplan invited all boats to their home in the Keys for cocktails and hors
d’ouerves, so we kind of short cut the southeast corner of the lake and
headed for the west entrance to the Keys. My experience is that that
corner of the lake has the least predictable boat drivers anyway. We
arrived at the Caplans’ docks at about 2:00. Steve and Cheryl hosted a
great impromptu party and then the balance of the boats headed for
ports north departed.
It was a fun trip and I think everybody had a good time. This is one
that I hope will become an annual event. I’m thinking it would be
good for the week after Labor Day and if enough boats commit in
advance, we could organize a provided lunch, anchorage, poker hands,
who knows?

The 28’ Sea Lyon came into our lives in 1994. It was rescued from a boat storage warehouse near Clayton,
N.Y. by Martin Smith and his dad Lou, where it had sat for decades. They brought it to San Jose
where they planed to restore it. That plan changed when they acquired a 30’ SeaLyon, “Eclipse”, and they
decided to sell the 28’ as is. It was in pretty sad condition, but it was a pre-war 28 foot triple cockpit and
that was what was important. To me the pre-war triple is the ultimate representative of classic boating.
The design objective of these boats was to be big, impressive and fast. No thought to practical application
was considered. What could be better than a big, impressive boat with no practical use? I had to have it.
My efforts to find the origins of this boat were unsuccessful, although I did talk to a very nice lady whose family had a 28’ SeaLyon
named after her (Mary Jane) that they used in Thousand Island area. But alas, it wasn’t my boat. This boat still exists, renamed
Elixir, and is being restored by Kent O. Smith of ACBS Adirondacks chapter.
The SeaLyon Company was started in 1927 by Howard Lyon, a successful GarWood dealer in New York City at the time. The story
goes that he was not satisfied with the GarWoods and the company was not receptive to his suggestions for improvements. So he
decided to build and sell his own boats. His factory was located in City Island, New York. The plan worked well for a couple of
years, until the depression hit in 1929. By 1934 SeaLyon closed its doors forever.
Production records disappeared with the company, so we can’t tell from the hull number when it was built or how it was equipped.
Nor do we know how many were built. From the sales literature that still exists, I know my boat is a 1930 or later. The hull number
is 219, which may indicate that couple of hundred were built up to that time. Sales literature indicates that no design changes were
made to the hulls after 1930, but more engine choices were added. Engines offered for the 28’ were the Scripps 202, Kermath Sea
Wolf, and the Lycoming V12. Interestingly, the 30’ SeaLyons used different engines entirely, either the Sterling Petrel or the Hall
Scott Invader.
A few years after I bought the SeaLyon I had the opportunity to buy a Lycoming V12. This engine is arguably one of the most impressive
of the early marine engines. It’s big, 1010 cubic inches, and very clean appearance with both the intake and exhaust manifolds
contained within the valley of the V. This engine is also very rare, with only one other running on the west coast. So, I had to
ponder whether or not to use this engine in my boat.
Since I didn’t have the original engine for the boat and since SeaLyon used the Lycoming V12 in the 28 foot hull, it made good
sense to use it. Further, this may be the only opportunity to see the Lycoming V12 in a 28 foot SeaLyon since very few of either
remain. Finally, the engine was just way too awesome not to use it!
Of course it took a little work to restore the boat to its original condition. In fact a sane person should not attempt a project this big.
Every frame and plank in the bottom had to be replaced. Hardware had to be custom fabricated to SeaLyon specifications. Side,
transom and deck planks were replaced. I used over 4000 screws and 15 plus gallons of epoxy. While I was doing this project I was
also working full time at my real job, trying not to neglect the family too much, and, did I mention, we remodeled the house.
John Allen did most of the engine work. We did a trial fitting of the engine into the hull at his shop after all the planking was done
but before any finishing work was done. It almost fit, but we had to cut a few places. It would have been OK in final position; it’s
just that there were a few things in the way of getting it to final position. After stain and varnish, but not the final coat, I showed up
at John’s shop again for the final installation. I was totally unprepared for what happened next; it dropped right in without a hitch.
Next, I pulled the boat to Petaluma so Rod Souza could install the blue leather upholstery. We knew the color from the catalog, and
Rod, after several tries, found a leather supplier who could match the texture in the catalog photos. I only had a few pieces of the
original seats, but Rod made good photos when he did Howard Guilde’s 30’ SeaLyon “White Smoke” and we used those as a guide
for reconstructing the seats to original.
For the final coat of varnish, Steve Caplan’s kindly let me use his famous barn. The idea was to get away from all the mahogany
dust in my garage from 9 years of sanding. I spent days hanging plastic sheets and trying to eliminate dust and bugs. My conclusion,
dust and bugs follow me no matter where I go. For better or for worse the last coat of varnish went on.
At this point I had a boat that looked great but hadn’t seen water for decades. The time had come for the water test. I met John Allen
at Collero Reservoir one morning for the water test. Jared and Paul Hein were also there to test their Chris Craft and pitched in to
help. It was quite a sight to have two woodies on that little
puddle. What a relief it was to have it in the water making a
big fat wake.
At last, after 11 years the boat was finally finished. I entered
the boat in the 2005 TYC Concours d’Elegance and was
thrilled to win the best of show for boats longer than 23’.

Many hands make light work for all and again we thank
our volunteers who have helped staff the “Ships Store”
at the Concourse. Our goal is to share the camaraderie
of people with a love for vintage boats. Members and
potential members meet with our enthusiastic staff, get
an opportunity to join our fun organization and purchase
some merchandise that helps them identify with
our passion for historical watercraft. Last year we
signed up 16 new member families from contacts at the
concourse.
If you are coming to the concourse and have not signed
up for a 2-3 hour block of time in the “store” please
contact Rich Fisher. [ cell: 925 525 5428, or
In the past as a token of appreciation for your volunteer
efforts we have been able to give admission passes to
volunteers that otherwise do not have a ticket through
boat entry, judging or gate/dock duty. It appears that
the TYCF in their efforts to maximize their charitable
fund raising will not be giving anyone except their direct
workers these admission passes. We understand
their decision but WE STILL NEED YOU.
“UNIFORM” FOR ANNUAL
MEETING PRE EVENTS
As noted in the previous edition of Western Wood we
have a limited supply of clothing that identifies with
our chapter and the ACBS Annual Meeting in September.
We have added caps and men’s denim shirts since
our display at the “Crossings” show in June. Purchase
yours at the Concourse on Thursday, August 3 rd to get
the best selection. (No admission pass required on
Thursday.)

Handling and Safety Clinic 2006, Herb Hall
Meeks Bay Barbecue
Page 15
This year’s handling clinic was a great success. If you haven’t participated, you really should consider coming next year.
I was assisted by some of the best instructors around, Chuck Kelly, Steve Hanst and Glory Beall. We had four boats and
roughly 15 people participating. As is our usual practice, we have a dry land session where we cover the fundamentals of
the dynamics of straight inboard handling. Many people don’t have any idea of what makes their boat handle like it does
and this portion of the clinic is often very enlightening. Then it was into the boats for some hands on instruction. We
used some near by buoys and docks, spending over and hour with each boat owner until he/she was becoming more proficient
and competent.
Newly graduated from our session were Norm and Kathy Kitching in their Grand Craft Kathryn, Nancy Cunningham
and Wes Schimmelpfennig in Santana, her 1941 Gar Wood, Wes and Patti Ball in their 24’ Hacker, and Les and Linda
Schwoob in their Chris Craft Continental. I personally instructed Norm and suggested that he needed to be a competent
boat driver before taking over as ACBS president next year. He passed with flying colors. Norm, get that control
changed!
(Check out the pictures on page 10)
On Tuesday, August 8th you are invited to our annual ACBS picnic and barbecue at
Meeks Bay. This event, known as ACBS Tuesday is a free event for our members,
family and friends. The event begins at noon and lunch will be served until 1:30.
If you are coming by boat make sure you have plenty of rope, chain and an adequate
anchor. A minimum of 100 feet of line is recommended. There will be buoy boats to assist
you.
Remember, this event is free. Questions...? Call John Lahti: 530 581 2709

Page 16 Western Wood
2006 marked the return of perfect weather (raise your hand if you remember last year.....) to the annual
"Crossing Of Chris Crafts" at Obexer's Marina, as we celebrated the beginning of Summer, and the official
start of the lake Tahoe boating season !
35 gleaming antique and classic boats were on display, and 120 ACBS members were on hand to enjoy this
special event and venue. Once again, or sincere thanks and appreciation goes out to Sarah Fields and the hardworking
staff at Obexer's Marina, for providing the perfect location for us to gather and celebrate the day, and
we were pleased that Keith and Sarah could be there to enjoy the day with us.
Members attending included Mark Jordan and Laurie McCarty in 'Say When", Trent and Karen Pridemore in
the newly refurbished "Lahontan", Bob and Ellen Swensen in "Tucker", Dave and Laura Nelsen in
"Tuppence", and the Bush Family arriving in "Mr President"
"Chris Craft for a day" attendees included Roy Dryer in "Friva", the Jeff Peterson family in the beautiful
"Steinway", Wes and Patti Ball in "Destiny", and Jim and Bernadette Sweeney in "Little Bear". Kudos to Harbor
Master Chuck Kelley for getting everyone safely into their slips.
Special thanks goes out once again this year to Steve Lapkin & the cast and crew of H2oMark Productions for
once again providing a wonderful array of morning snacks plus the always popular champagne & orange juice
for everyone to enjoy. Additional recognition goes to Labrador Sam for helping me wash down the boat.......
My daughter Hannah's favorite part was the wonderful home-made ice-cream provided by the Lake Tahoe
Maritime Museum, who were also on hand to give rides in "Miss Tahoe" and signup new members.
Once again lunch was the highlight of the day, as we enjoyed a wonderful sit-down BBQ lunch in the historic
barn at Obexer's, catered by Carina's of South Shore. The grilled chicken and tri-tip was excellent, and by
1:00pm there wasn't much left on the buffet table save for a few chocolate brownies, and Rich Fisher soon
made off with those.
Many thanks to Roy Dryer who arranged for the wine to be donated by Ironstone Vineyards, and to Tammi
Lyon for the table centerpieces.
Our tradition of presenting the very informal but highly prestegious "Best Chris Craft Of Show" award continued
this year. Honorable mention went to both "lolipop", owned by Steve and Cheryl Caplin, and to
"Quiver", owned and restored by Ralph and Bonnie Wallen. Top honors went to "Good Grief", a beautilful
1939 19' Barrelstern Custom runabout, owned by Mike and Kathy Scroggie, and the "Best Boat Bar Of
Show" recognition went to Larry Walter, for his outstanding personal handywork on "Victory", a 1947 Chris
Craft U-22, fresh from Larry's shop.
Special thanks to everyone who signed up for this event and made our first boat show of the 2006 season a
whole lotta fun! (pictures on Page 10)

Dear Fellow ACBS Members,
Thank you to Mike Evans, Cody Taylor, Joel Castro,
Scott Ewing, Jerry Turney, Dave Lyon, Jared
Hein, and Lee Chase for contributing some of the
pictures I used in this issue. I really appreciate the
photos. I won’t be at the TYC Concourse or Meeks
Bay Picnic, so some of you please take pictures
and send me the good ones. .
I still don’t have enough advertising for the Chapter
Directory. So this is what I need: I need 7 full
pages of ads. Each page will hold 3 business card
size, or 2 half page, or 1 full page. The price for the
ads are:
$200 for Business Card size
$400 for ½ page ads
$600 for full page ad
The last one we did was in 2003 and I know that
even though a lot of the data is out of date you are
still using it. I will also be sending out bills to all me
advertisers for the Western Wood. This is you last
issue for the year cycle. Look for the bills around
the end of August. The new pricing will be $125 for
a Business Card size ad and $500 for a quarter
page ad. This is a slight increase over last years
ad prices. We are currently 604 members strong
and growing. This is the price for the next 4 issues,
not per issue.
In the next issue I will have some really great pictures
of Wood & Glory and details. I will also have
an article that was originally printed in the 1993
Winter addition of Western Wood giving some history
of how our Delta Cruise came to be. I also
have some older pictures of that too. If you have
any that you would like to share, send them to me.
Keep sending me those stories and pictures for the
website and/or newsletter. I prefer digital, but can
scan in photos too. Just a reminder that the newsletter
is also available on the website.
