This will reducewait times for patients.10“We had the rightpeople on our side.”With no time to lose, Umberto Rizza wasrushed to Trillium Health Centre where hewas treated for a massive stroke. His wife,Antonietta, was by his side during theentire ordeal. She too had received lifesavingvascular care at Trillium just a fewyears earlier.“Umberto and I knew we had the rightpeople on our side and that we were in thebest place,” she says.Trillium is a Regional Stroke Centre, whichmeans people calling 911 with strokesymptoms come directly to the healthcentre for urgent assessment and, incertain cases, a clot busting agent calledtPA. In these situations, time is critical. Itis important to get patients the treatmentthey need as quickly as possible tominimize motor or cognitive damage.But getting tPA on time was only the firstof three hurdles Umberto had to overcome.While in hospital, he was also found tohave severe heart disease and a largeabdominal aortic aneurysm. He underwentheart bypass surgery followed by aorticaneurysm repair six months later.trilliumhealthcentre.org/communityreport“Stroke is often associated with heartattack and other vascular disease, suchas abdominal aortic aneurysms,” explainsDr. Marc Pope, vascular surgeon anddirector of the Vascular Laboratory. “Theyshare the same risk factors, such as highblood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes,smoking and lack of exercise.”As the Regional Centre for Neurosciences,Trillium provides patients with highlyspecialized programs for neurosurgery,stroke, neurology and spine. Strokepatients receive integrated care, whichmeans the same team follows the patientfrom admission through to discharge –including rehabilitation services – and theninto the Regional Stroke Prevention Clinic.The team also ensures stroke survivorsreceive the care they need once they returnto the community. Through this program,Trillium follows up with stroke survivors,speaking with them at 3-, 6- and 18-monthintervals to understand how they arecoping and offering necessary supports.When asked to remark on the treatmenthe received from Trillium, Umberto’s eyesfill with tears as he holds two thumbs up toshow his gratitude.

Trillium’s operational funding from the Ministry of Healthand Long-Term Care increased due to Post-Construction Operating Plan (PCOP) funds involving the new inpatient expansion,favourable performance regarding wait times, Emergency Pay-for-Results and Cardiac services. Additional funding was alsoreceived for growth, Aging-at-Home initiatives and being designated the regional lead for Specialized Geriatric Services andGeriatric Mental Health. A disbursement of $4.83million was transferred to Trillium in fiscal 2010/11 which funded major projects such as digital mammography diagnosticequipment and the revitalization of spaces dedicated to Mental Health Services.
