More time for care: Diane Miles, RN; Sara Ste-Croix, RN, with patient Douglas HancherFunding equipmentfor quality care“They were always therewhen I needed them.”A priority for theFoundation is to put theright tools in the handsof Trillium’s healthcare professionals toimprove the patientexperience. With thecommunity’s generosity,Trillium has purchasedcare-enhancingequipment, such aselectronic whiteboardsand touch screens, togive staff access to vitalinformation instantly.Wireless nurse calldevices, which connectpatients directly totheir nurses, improveresponse times, reducepatient stress andeliminate disruptiveoverhead pages.Douglas Hancher had never stayedovernight in a hospital in his life and wasnot looking forward to it when he wentin for knee replacement surgery. Thatchanged when he arrived at the newinpatient wing at Trillium Health Centre.“It was beautiful,” Douglas says. “Nicebright colours. Spacious. Lots of light.Nobody likes to go into hospital, but thisfelt like a home away from home.”The new wing is more than just a prettyplace; it is the result of one of severalevidence-based initiatives at Trilliumdesigned to bring nurses closer to theirpatients and to increase the amountof time that caregivers spend at theirpatients’ bedsides. Research shows thatthe new wing design has increaseddirect patient-care time, reduced nursecall response time and improved patientsatisfaction scores significantly.Another initiative that is increasing stafftime at the bedside is called ReleasingTime to Care. Nurse Diane Miles explains,“Releasing Time to Care empowers usto look at our practices and implementchanges to improve our efficiency.”Small changes have made a big difference.“Because of the program,” Diane says, “Ican spend more time with my patients. I cansit and listen to their needs, both physicaland emotional. I can hold their hands. Itmakes them feel happier and safer. And Ilook forward to going to work.”Douglas has also noticed the impact.“During my stay, the nurses and the staffwere wonderful,” he recalls. “If I hadquestions, they took as much time as wasneeded to answer. And because there wasa nurses’ station right outside my door, they were quick to respond and alwaysthere when I needed them.”In 2011/12, another program calledCollaborative Care by Design will further addto the time staff can spend at their patients’bedsides through an interprofessional teamapproach to patient care.8trilliumhealthcentre.org/communityreport

Every second counts: Dr. Marc Pope, vascular surgeon; Umberto and Antonietta RizzaCommunity donorsbuy essentialmicroscopeWith a matching giftfrom the Rotary Clubof Etobicoke andgenerous supportfrom the community, the Foundation raisedfunds for the purchaseof a much-neededsurgical microscope toreplace one that wasmore than 20 yearsold. This powerfultool will enable 400more neurosurgicalprocedures, and over200 ear, nose andthroat procedures, peryear. This will reducewait times for patients.10“We had the rightpeople on our side.”With no time to lose, Umberto Rizza wasrushed to Trillium Health Centre where hewas treated for a massive stroke. His wife,Antonietta, was by his side during theentire ordeal. She too had received lifesavingvascular care at Trillium just a fewyears earlier.“Umberto and I knew we had the rightpeople on our side and that we were in thebest place,” she says.Trillium is a Regional Stroke Centre, whichmeans people calling 911 with strokesymptoms come directly to the healthcentre for urgent assessment and, incertain cases, a clot busting agent calledtPA. In these situations, time is critical. Itis important to get patients the treatmentthey need as quickly as possible tominimize motor or cognitive damage. But getting tPA on time was only the firstof three hurdles Umberto had to overcome. While in hospital, he was also found tohave severe heart disease and a largeabdominal aortic aneurysm. He underwentheart bypass surgery followed by aorticaneurysm repair six months later.trilliumhealthcentre.org/communityreport“Stroke is often associated with heartattack and other vascular disease, suchas abdominal aortic aneurysms,” explainsDr. Marc Pope, vascular surgeon anddirector of the Vascular Laboratory. “Theyshare the same risk factors, such as highblood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking and lack of exercise.”As the Regional Centre for Neurosciences,Trillium provides patients with highlyspecialized programs for neurosurgery, stroke, neurology and spine. Strokepatients receive integrated care, whichmeans the same team follows the patientfrom admission through to discharge –including rehabilitation services – and theninto the Regional Stroke Prevention Clinic. The team also ensures stroke survivorsreceive the care they need once they returnto the community. Through this program,Trillium follows up with stroke survivors, speaking with them at 3-, 6- and 18-monthintervals to understand how they arecoping and offering necessary supports. When asked to remark on the treatmenthe received from Trillium, Umberto’s eyesfill with tears as he holds two thumbs up toshow his gratitude.
