You can check the
progress of your
application using Track
at www.ucas.com,
which will be updated as
we receive decisions
from universities and
colleges.
We receive most exam
results direct from the
awarding bodies – you
can check the list at
www.ucas.com. Check
Track at www.ucas.com
to see if you’ve got a
place on your chosen
course.
If you have received
different grades than
expected, there may be
other options available.
You need to look at Track
and course vacancies at
STEP 6
Starting
university
or college
You need to make sure
you have everything
ready, such as
accommodation,
finances, travel
arrangements, books
and equipment required
for the course.
Your first step is to find out all about the universities and colleges and the courses they offer, so you can decide which courses to include on your application. Try to use as many of
the following sources of information as possible.
COURSE SEARCH
Course Search is a tool on our website, www.ucas.com, which helps you find courses which interest you. You can search on almost any subject, course type, institution or region.
Nearly all courses on UCAS Course Search have what are known as ‘Entry Profiles’. These are compiled by staff at the university or college, and provide extra information to help
you decide if the course is the right one for you. Entry Profiles provide information about the course, specific entry requirements, career possibilities and the qualities or experience
admissions staff are looking for in an applicant. Increasingly, they are also providing information about an institution’s admission and selection criteria. Entry Profiles may also
provide details about accommodation, access for students with special needs, open days and student life. Most Entry Profiles include links to the universities’ and colleges’
websites for further information. Entry Profiles make it easier to differentiate between courses with similar or identical names.
You can research information for courses starting in 2012 on Course Search from May 2011, but tuition fee details will not be available on Course Search until early July 2011.
UCASTV
From the homepage at www.ucas.com you can watch videos about choosing courses and attending UCAS conventions, as well as recordings of students talking about how they
decided on their course choices.
UCAS CONVENTIONS
We hold around 50 higher education conventions every year throughout the UK. Most universities and colleges attend our conventions so that their admissions staff can provide
information about their institutions and courses. At our conventions we hold seminars to guide you through the application process and help you prepare for life as a student Visit
www.ucas.com for more information about our conventions and to find out where and when they take place.
OPEN DAYS AND TASTER COURSES
Most universities and colleges run open days, which give you the opportunity to look around the institution, meet tutors and students, and ask questions. Some universities and
colleges also run short ‘taster’ courses that give you the chance to sample the academic and social life. You can find the dates for open days in the institution guide at
www.ucas.com.
Our Open days booklet includes a full list of open days, taster courses and UCAS conventions. It costs £3.50 and you can buy a copy online at www.ucasbooks.com, or by
emailing publicationservices@ucas.ac.uk.
UNISTATS
Step 2- Applying (continued)
DON’T FORGET…
Universities and colleges have agreed to consider your application if we receive it by
the appropriate deadline. If we receive it after the deadline, but by 30 June 2012,
universities and colleges will consider it if they still want to make more offers.
HOW TO APPLY
Whatever your age or qualifications, if you want to apply for any of over 40,000
courses at approximately 300 universities and colleges on our website, you must
apply through UCAS.
You apply online at www.ucas.com through Apply – our secure, web-based
application service that is designed for all our applicants anywhere in the world,
whether they are applying through a school, college or other UCAS-registered centre
or as an individual. Apply is:
• easy to access – all you need is an internet connection
• easy to use – you don’t have to complete your application all in one go: you can
save the sections as you complete them and come back to it later. As you complete
Step 2- Applying (continued)
YOU’LL NEED A REFERENCE
When you have completed all the other sections of your application, you need to
obtain a reference before your application can be sent to us. If you are applying
through a school, college or other UCAS-registered centre, you send your completed
application to them online. They add a reference and send your application to us. If
you are not applying through a UCAS-registered centre, you obtain your referee’s
agreement to provide a reference before entering their details on your application.
We then send him or her an automated email to request an online reference. Your
referee enters the reference directly onto your application through our secure website.
We need to receive your completed application with a reference by the application
deadlines, so make sure you give your centre or referee plenty of time to write your
reference.
HOW MUCH WILL IT ALL COST?
Your application will cost £11 if you apply for one course or £22 if you apply for two to
five courses.
• Compare subjects and unis • See job prospects for your subject
• Compare UCAS points • See what 220,000 students thought
each section, you can click on a help button for guidance on entering information
• easy to monitor – once you’ve applied, you can use our online Track service at
www.ucas.com to check the progress of your application, including any decisions
from universities or colleges. You can also reply to your offers using Track.
You can only make one application in each year’s application cycle.
If you are unsure about the application process, your school, college or careers adviser
will be able to assist you. Further help and advice for applicants and parents is
available on the UCAS website www.ucas.com.
OXFORD AND CAMBRIDGE
You cannot apply to both the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, unless you already
have or expect to have a degree by September 2012.
HOW MANY CHOICES?
You can apply for up to five course choices on your application. If you are applying for
medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine or veterinary medicine, you can only apply for
four courses in any one of these subjects.
Make sure you know the tuition fees for your chosen courses before sending your
application to us.
WANT TO APPLY FOR STUDENT FINANCE?
You shouldn’t wait for your exam results to apply for student finance. You can apply
online for finance as soon as the services for the different countries go live. The
services in Wales and Northern Ireland usually go live in November, while the services
in England and Scotland are normally available from February and May respectively.
By applying early you can have everything sorted before you start your course. Visit
the websites listed in the Money matters section for student finance information.
If you live in England, Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can make the whole process
easier by choosing to share some information on your application with the Student
Loans Company when you apply through UCAS.
WANT TO START A COURSE IN 2013?
If you want to start your course in 2013, perhaps because you want to take a gap
year, you should check that the university or college will be able to consider you if you
apply in the application cycle for 2012 course entry. Some tutors may not be happy to
accept students who take a gap year, because it interrupts the flow of their learning. If
you apply in the 2012 application cycle to start a course in 2013, you must meet the
conditions of any offers by 31 August 2012, unless otherwise agreed with the
university or college.
The UCAS Guide to getting
into University and College
Everything you need to know about the
entire research and application process.
This new guide from UCAS will help you maximise your
chances of getting into uni or college by answering the
top applicant questions, such as:
How do I choose the right course?
Which is the best uni or college for me?
How and when should I apply?
What makes a great personal statement?
How do I find out about finance and funding?
What about admissions tests and interviews?
and many more...?
Step 2 Applying
The quality of your writing reflects the quality of your thinking. Show that you know
your strengths and can outline your ideas clearly. Use words you know will be
understood by the person reading your statement; you might find it easier if you
imagine you are talking to them across their desk. In fact, you can sometimes spot
where your statement doesn't work well by reading it aloud!
Dos and don’ts when writing your personal statement
Do create a list of your ideas before attempting to write the real thing.
Do expect to produce several drafts before being totally happy.
Do ask people you trust for their feedback.
Do check university and college prospectuses, websites and Entry Profiles (at
www.ucas.com), as they usually tell you the criteria and qualities that they want their
students to demonstrate.
Do use your best English/Welsh and don't let spelling and grammatical errors spoil
your statement.
Do be enthusiastic – if you show your interest in the course, it may help you get a
place.
Don't feel that you need to use elaborate language. If you try too hard to impress with
long words that you are not confident using, the focus of your writing may be lost.
Don't say too much about things that are not relevant – if you think that you are
starting to, take a break and come back to your statement when you feel more
focused.
Don't lie – if you exaggerate you may get caught out at interview when asked to
elaborate on an interesting achievement.
Don't rely on a spellchecker as it will not pick up everything – proofread as many
times as possible.
Don't leave it to the last minute – your statement will seem rushed and important
information could be left out.
Don't expect to be able to write your personal statement while watching TV or surfing
the internet – this is your future, so make the most of the opportunity to succeed.
Personal statement
Student tip:
‘I didn’t really know where
to start, what to write or
anything, but after looking
on the UCAS website I
found some pages that
gave me advice on what to
include and what not to
include. When I actually
wrote my personal
statement, I found that
making a list of the things
I wanted to include in it
very useful. I then
expanded on each of my
points in my list, put the
most important first and
the whole thing slowly
fitted together.’
Money matters
It is important that you take some time to think about the financial aspects of going into
higher education and research how much it is going to cost and what help is available
to you.
You should visit www.ucas.com/students/studentfinance to find out where to go for
everything you need to know. The website also has a budget calculator to help you plan
your finances.
If you are going to study full-time, your two main expenses whilst at university or
college will be your contribution to tuition fees and your living costs (such as rent, food,
books, clothing and transport).
Financial support is available. How much help you will get depends on where you live,
your household income, the type of course you want to do, and the university or college
where you are planning to study. You should check the website below for the country
where you normally live for more information.
If your live in England, visit, www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance
If you live in Wales, visit www.studentfinancewales.co.uk or
www.cyllidmyfyrwyrcymru.co.uk.
If you live in Scotland, visit www.saas.gov.uk.
If you live in Northern Ireland, visit www.studentfinanceni.co.uk.
If you live in Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man, visit www.gov.gg/, www.gov.je/
or www.gov.im/.
Step 6 - Starting university or college
Congratulations! You now have a place at university or college. If you are not planning to stay at home, the university or college should be able to help you find a place to live.
You need to plan your finances to cover the cost of accommodation, living expenses, course fees, travel and books. Try using our budget calculator at www.ucas.com.
Register at yougofurther.co.uk to meet other students who will be studying at the same university or college and who may be on your course.
Where no figures are given, please contact institution direct to obtain data.
Step 4 - Results
At www.ucas.com we list all the qualifications for which we receive results direct from the exam boards. We send these results to the universities and colleges where applicants have
accepted offers. If your qualification is not listed on our website, you need to send your exam results to the universities and colleges where you are holding offers.
When the universities and colleges receive your exam results, they tell us whether or not you have a place. You use Track at www.ucas.com to find out if you have a place on your
chosen course.
Step 5 – Next steps
IF YOU HAVE A PLACE
We send you a Confirmation letter.
BETTER EXAM RESULTS THAN EXPECTED?
If you obtain exam results that meet and exceed the conditions of your firmly accepted
offer, you can for a short period look for an alternative place, whilst still keeping your
original firmly accepted offer.
WHAT IF YOU DON’T HAVE A PLACE?
If you have not met the conditions of your offers, and your chosen universities or
colleges have not confirmed your place, you are eligible for Clearing. In Clearing you can
contact any universities and colleges that still have vacancies. If a university or college
makes you a verbal offer that you want to accept, you apply for the course on Track at
www.ucas.com. When the university or college confirms your place, you can see it on
Track. Clearing operates from mid-July to late September 2011.
What publications are available from UCAS?
Can UCAS help keep my parents/guardians informed?
Parents and guardians sometimes worry about this new step in their family life. Your entering higher education is a big change which might involve your leaving home, and the
financial aspects of it all may also raise many questions for them.
On our website your parents can register to receive a free copy of our Parent Guide and monthly email newsletters giving key information from UCAS and other relevant organisations
to help keep them up-to-date with the application process. The UCAS website gives full information about applying and going to college or university, and parents can find answers
to many of their questions at www.ucas.com/parents.
Our website provides information about student bursaries, grants and awards with links to the relevant government sites. It gives funding information for disabled students and
students with dependants. It also includes checklists of things for your parents to consider at each stage, for example: will you require a postal vote or will you need to join the
electoral register at college; or what safety checks should you make when selecting accommodation (eg smoke alarms, window locks, insurance); etc.
By informing themselves through reading the websites and going with you to a convention or open day, your parents can give you support, and just be there for you as a
knowledgeable sounding-board and safety net.
Step 3 - Offers
After we have sent your application to your chosen universities and colleges, they all
consider you independently and tell us whether or not they can offer you a place. They
make a ‘conditional’ offer if you need to pass exams before you can start the course
and an ‘unconditional’ offer if you already have all the qualifications for course entry.
You use Track at www.ucas.com to view all your decisions and find out the details for
your offers. When you have received decisions from all your chosen universities and
colleges, you reply to your offers on Track.
EXTRA
If you have no offers and you have already made five choices, you can use the Extra
process to apply for one further course at a time on Track at www.ucas.com. Extra
operates from late February to early July.
How can I find out more about UCAS and applying?
If you have any questions about the application process, please ask your tutor
or careers adviser or visit www.ucas.com. If you still need to contact us,
details can be found at www.ucas.com/about_us/contact_us/.
We have made all reasonable efforts to ensure that the information in this
publication was correct at time of publication. We will not, however, accept
any liability for errors, omissions or changes to information since
publication. Wherever possible any changes will be updated on the
UCAS website www.ucas.com.
UCAS and its trading subsidiary, UCAS Media Limited, accept
advertising for publications that promote products and services
relating to higher education and career progression. Revenue
generated by advertising is invested by UCAS in order to
applicants as low as possible. Neither UCAS nor UCAS Media
Limited endorse the products and services of other
how to apply, admissions tests, personal statements, student finance,
gap years and much more.
