Congresswoman
Debbie Wasserman Schultz
(D–FL 20th), the first Jewish Congresswoman ever
elected in Florida, has an impressive portfolio. A
“Cardinal” on the House Committee on
Appropriations, member of the Judiciary Committee
and as Chief Deputy Whip, Representative
Wasserman Schultz is uniquely well-positioned to
serve her constituents and greatly influence longrange
policy goals and key issues facing Congress. A
visit to her offices in Washington, Aventura or
Pembroke Pines reveals Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s
passions. This includes her family and strong advocacy
for children and women’s rights, as well as
protection of our environment.
(D–NY 4th) has served Long Island since 1996 and is
During a recent visit, Congresswoman Wasserman
Schultz and David Mandel discussed OHEL’s work
in South Florida focusing on school-based education
to expand their social and learning opportunities.
Congresswoman McCarthy is well-known for her
passion on gun control, strong advocacy on behalf of
children, working to make colleges more affordable,
overseeing the financial service system and protecting
the identity of Long Islanders.
OHEL Bais Ezra services in Congresswoman
McCarthy’s district have grown dramatically with
housing, in-home habilitation and respite and schoolbased
services. Congresswoman McCarthy’s role as
chairwoman of the subcommittee on Health, Families
and Communities resonates with OHEL’s mission of
strengthening families.
WON’T YOU BE
JUDAH’S FOSTER
PARENTS?
A PLEA TO FIND A FAMILY!
“I want a family!” These are the actual words of
Judah, an 11 year old boy. He is sweet and caring. His
determination and resilience have helped him through
many trying times. He loves to read and ride his bike.
These are his two favorite hobbies.
But Judah is not your average child – he needs a loving
family because he is a foster child. After being abused and
neglected and finally abandoned by his parents who suffer
from mental illness and drug addictions, the Administration
for Children’s Services contacted OHEL who stepped in to
provide for Judah’s needs.
After spending some time in foster homes, Judah has been
living in institutional residences for the past few years,
receiving treatment for the psychiatric and emotional issues
that have followed him.
Mayor Bloomberg Hosts BBQ
INVITES OHEL STAFF AND CLIENTS
Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg hosted a barbeque
in honor of the Mayoral Advocacy Awards and
to celebrate the 16th Anniversary of the
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) at
Gracie Mansion. Among the guests were staff
and Clients who were invited to represent
OHEL at the festivities. Seen left to right are
Goldie Simons; Mayor Bloomberg; Yossi Simons;
and Leah Rokeach, Assistant Director, AMHS.
There is no question that Judah has a rough road ahead of
him. He suffers from severe ADHD and has learning
disabilities. Things are difficult right now.
You see, Judah has shown much progress in the residence,
and OHEL is now working hard to reconnect him with a
home and a family — a family that will love him and give
him the security that he needs to grow, develop and learn
to trust again.
In today’s world, where the percentage of children at risk is
rising, we wonder how we can make a difference. Kol Yisrael
responsibility for one another. Now is the time to act. We
don’t want to fail Judah and the others.
IN WHOM DO YOU “TRUST?”
By: Norman B. Gildin, Chief Development Officer
Among the definitions of the
word “trust” in the
dictionary are “to place confidence”
or “depend.” In today’s
world this word takes on added
meaning, as we often rely on, believe or commit ourselves
to others. When we are entrusted in the care of others, it
especially holds special significance.
“Trust” can also take on importance in connection with
estate planning in that it serves as an important financial
planning tool. Trusts can be very useful and help you
accomplish your tax and estate planning strategies. In
fact, there are many trusts that provide asset protection
and afford other legal and tax benefits to those who
establish them.
Trusts can be created for you, for a spouse or a significant
other, for children and for charities. Space
precludes describing every conceivable trust, however,
here are three types of trusts that are particularly
common in the not-for-profit, charitable world.
CHARITABLE REMAINDER ANNUITY TRUST
A charitable remainder annuity trust, or CRAT, provides
a donor or his/her designate(s), as the income beneficiaries,
with a fixed annuity. By law, the minimum rate of
return must be no less than 5%, and it must be a fixed
or determinable amount. The fair market value of the
property put into the trust is the basis for calculating the
beneficiaries’ income. Once established, no further
contributions can be made to it. The donor can receive
a fixed dollar amount — paid at least annually — or a
fixed percentage of trust assets. At the term of the trust,
the remainder goes to the charity. Finally, should the
trust earn less than the payout, the principal must be
invaded to make the required payment.
CHARITABLE REMAINDER UNITRUST
A unitrust, or CRUT, is similar to a CRAT, but it
provides a fluctuating annual payment based on a
percentage of the trust’s value each year. As with the
CRAT, the percentage must be at least 5% of the initial
gift amount. When the trust is created, the donor selects
the payout, and additional gifts can be made to the trust
at any time. There are also variations to the unitrust.
CHARITABLE LEAD TRUST
In the cases of a Lead Trust, the gift arrangement is
opposite that of a life income gift such as a CRAT. The
Lead Trust provides an income stream to the charity
during the term of the trust, with the remainder going
to the donor or his/her designate (s) at the end of the
trust period. As with other trusts, there are variations to
this theme that are too lengthy to explain in a short
column.
BENEFITS TO CREATING CHARITABLE TRUSTS
There are many reasons to create a Charitable Trust.
Among them:
(a) Depending on the type of Trust you choose, it can create an
income stream for you and/or your spouse for life;
(b) you may avoid significant capital gains taxes, especially if
you establish the Trust with an asset that has appreciated for
more than 12 months;
(c) it actually helps diversify your concentrated holdings;
(d) you may enjoy a significant charitable income tax deduction,
portions of which can be spread up to as many as five years;
(e) you may measurably reduce your probate and estate taxes,
which is all-important to your heirs, if any; and
(f) in most instances it helps you achieve your philanthropic
goals.
PLANNING YOUR FUTURE NOW
The well being of children and grandchildren is
frequently on the minds of donors who establish charitable
trusts. And for a good reason. With today’s
increasing tax burdens and rising costs, this concern is
legitimate. Benefiting your favorite charity during
your lifetime, or after your death, can also be
considered when planning your future and that of
your heirs, because it may benefit you and them
too! For more information, call our Toll-Free
The past school year has been a busy one for
OHEL Bais Ezra’s School Based programs. Staff
visited more than thirty schools and presented
seminars and workshops for staff, students and
parents to provide education and heighten awareness
of at-risk behaviors; conflict resolution;
safety from unwanted touch and more.
Students and adults are benefiting greatly from
these programs.
Rabbi Meir Mark leads many student workshops. In the
THE SIMCHA
PROGRAM @ OHEL:
Helping Jewish Individuals With
Disabilities Build Relationships
BY: LEAH ROKEACH, ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, AMHS
The Simcha Program focuses on providing opportunities
for socialization and dating that can lead to marriage.
This past year has been very exciting for the men and
women who joined the program. We had a few socials in
restaurants and a bowling party which resulted in dates for
some of the men and women who participated. Just like all
single individuals, some couples dated a couple of times,
some only dated one time, and three couples are still dating
on a regular basis.
One of our socials took place at the very elegant and upscale
Orchidea restaurant located in Boro Park. We invited
twenty five people, thirteen men and twelve women. After
they arrived at the restaurant, they were seated at very
elegant set tables with fresh flowers at each table. There was
a board game at each table, an ice breaker to lessen the stress
of finding topics to discuss. People played games, socialized,
Kadimah Day Program
K adimah is the
Hebrew word for
‘forward’ and represents
the psychosocial club’s
commitment to assist
individuals with mental
illness to move beyond
limitations they may be
experiencing. The purpose of OHEL’s Kadimah Day
program is to provide its participants with support and a
feeling of community as well as improvement of socialization
skills in a relaxed setting that is sensitive to the diverse
cultural and multi-lingual needs of the Jewish population.
smiled and laughed. Two people asked to be introduced to
other individuals sitting at different tables.
After spending some time playing board games, the staff
introduced the speed dating game, which is used at every
single event around the country. During this game, men and
women sit across from each other and spend a couple of
minutes getting to know each other.
After the speed dating ended, everyone helped themselves to
the food prepared buffet style which also included a sushi bar.
This was a very special event. It provided the opportunity
for a few individuals who have a disability, to have a normal
experience, to be like other single people in New York, who
are invited to a social event in a restaurant. After all, it’s
bashert.
In the past few months, participants have written and
‘published’ their own newsletter, visited the New York
Aquarium, several museums, participated in Torah
learning groups, a book reading club, art classes, cooking
classes, money management groups and a weekly peer
support group. The Kol Chazan Band is part of Kadimah
and the members play at various OHEL Bais Ezra events
that are enjoyed by all in attendance.
Activities enhance the self confidence and social skills of the
individuals while empowering clients to take an active role
in their rehabilitation and ultimate recovery. If you know
an individual that could benefit from this day program,
please call Dr. Michael Jonas at (718) 851-6300.
The “New Lease on Life”
Program Offers Hope and…
A New Lease on Life
Janice W. has been suffering from chronic mental illness since her
teenage years. Now at age 32, she still lives with her parents and
hasn’t been able to do much to move ahead with her life.
Janice registered for college a few
times, but ends up feeling overwhelmed.
Mr. and Mrs. W know
that she needs to be in a residential
rehabilitative setting, but everywhere
they have looked is unappealing.
The environments bear
little resemblance to the Jewish
home they provide for their
daughter. As the years go by, they
see how her Jewish identity is deteriorating,
as many of her peers
move on in life. She is becoming
more and more marginalized.
The W.’s heard about OHEL in New
York, and decided to visit. It was
very encouraging to learn about the range of psychiatric residential,
vocational and outpatient services available in a cultural context that
was sensitive and respectful to Jewish practices. Unfortunately
though, they also learned that these services are only available to residents
of New York. In addition, even if the W’s moved to New York,
the residential placements have a long waiting list. Time is ticking by
and Janice is not getting the help she needs. What can the W’s do?
There is an answer.
The “New Lease on Life” Program initiated by The Rose and Maurice
Halpern Lifetime Care Foundation allows persons to move to New
York and enter into a living arrangement while receiving expert
psychiatric rehabilitative services. This program works with families
who are from outside of New York, or who are on a waiting list for
funded housing, to develop a plan where they can purchase case
management and residential services, while combining it with many
funded programs, allowing the possibility of rehabilitation at an
affordable level.
Alumni
Judy Judy Landau Fulda
From 1981-1986 I worked at
the 52nd Street home of Bais
Ezra as a Shabbos counselor just
about every other weekend as
well as yomim tovim. I also
worked on many Sundays. The
women taught me so much about
enjoying and appreciating life
and I really had positive experiences
during those six years. I
also worked with some
wonderful staff members, some
of whom I’ve remained friends
with until today.
I went on to obtain my MS in
School Psychology and have had
various jobs in schools and agencies
(UCP, Board of Ed, Moriah
School of Englewood, Tikvah-
New Hope Guild, etc.) I am
currently on staff at the Kiryas
and I know that much of what I
learned at Bais Ezra 20 years ago
helps me in my work today!
Lichovod R’ Moshe:
I’m enclosing a letter that I sent to Dr. Kaplowitz, M’s
psychiatrist. I thought it important that you and David
Mandel know that the care your people give is
outstanding. At the same time I would like to mention
to you that everyone from Bais Ezra, who is involved
with M, is indeed a “shaliach tov” from the Ribono Shel
Olam. This is how I have to look at it in order to live
with myself. I have such tremendous “Hakoras Hatov”- I
just wish I were able to express it in more than just
words. From the House Manager, Berel Volinsky, to every
counselor that I have contact with and everyone in
between – they are extremely dedicated
and caring substitute parents. Donny
Hollander, his psychologist…for whom I
have no words. Maybe one day I’ll
explain in person. Mrs. Hollander,
the nurse, (no relation) Melissa, his
case manager - everyone, everyone
– they are absolutely wonderful. I
feel that my words will be inadequate
no matter what I say,
so I better stop here.
All the best!
Dear Ms. Lewitter,
I am writing this letter to let you know that since my son and our family have
become part of the Bais Ezra Res/Hab Medicaid Waiver program, our quality of
life has improved tremendously. The person who deserves the credit for this is our
service coordinator, Melissa Zegerman.
From the very beginning, she has accepted every challenge given to her
with grace and professionalism. She has always responded in a very timely fashion
and no task has been too difficult for her. When she shows up for her monthly
visits, it seems that everything has been taken care of, and then a whole slew of
new problems or concerns or questions comes up and she never tires of trying to
help.
She is also such a pleasant person to deal with. It seems like she has the
patience of a saint when it comes to listening to my problems. When I feel that I
have reached a brick wall, she seems to always come to the rescue. I
know that this all sounds as if she is too good to be true, but she
really is an exceptional human being.
Before hooking up with Bais Ezra, I was with another
agency. I dreaded the required visits from the service coordinators
and everything always took such a long time to be taken
care of, and there were many concerns that could not be
handled by them. Now I know that I have someone in my
corner and it makes facing the trials and tribulations that
come with being the parent of a handicapped child that
much easier.
I want to thank Bais Ezra for all they have done
for me thus far.
Sincerely,
C. S. and Family
