ditorial opi nion Maybe its,too much to expect that members of our university act as if they care more for teaching students than bickering with other members of the University. While the situation isn't exactly up to Teamster \ standards, the union shenanigans make students wonder whose interests are best being served white the fight lingers on. The iriterests " at heart are surely not those of the students Or the rest of the community, both of whom want the whole question settled as quickly as possible. Perhaps the" interests are too much at heart, no matter whose interests they are. Thinking, rational University people become Stalling emotional, scheming University people when the i question of unionizatjp n comes *up. Thinking people would never ' let an important question like' this go unresolved for three years. Thinking people would never stall because, they know stalling would not erase the persistent question of unionization. Grant ed, unionization- is a tough issue to settle. The University of Pitt sburgh took several years to do so and a lot of bad feelings grew during those unsettled years, just' like the bad feelings now growing at the University. ' Bad feelings and bickering among factions at the University can only! harm the operation of the University. If opposing forces] can't cooperate on an efficient solution to unionization, it's no wonder jthe University has trobble running efficiently. The courts] jthe usual answer when two partjes cahjt settle their differences reasonably, qte no answer at all. Court stalling is the favorite tactic- for the administration , these " days. Some unionization supporters estimate that court stalling could tie the case up for another two years. Two more ydars. And when the big legal guns are exhausted, even the contenders, will be tired of the whole mess, j Kicking television habit harder than you think \ By SARAH MARTENS Collegian Columnist "Prodigal! son, he's been away for awhile ..." I felt like the long lost hero of the familiar Denver song as I settled down in front of the television set tor the first time in years during Christmas break. Prodded by my new-found college intellectualism," I quit the booby tube cold turkey during my first term and except for an embarrassing relapse during last year's Stanley Cup-playoffs, I had kicked the habit completely. My confidence in myself not to t be mesmerized beyond hope, plus boredom and a bit of curiosity about Cher's navel, now had me enchanted once again. At first I didn't mean to watch it, but lust to sit in the same room with it and see how easily I could ignore it. After all, my family would think me rather antisocial if I took sanctuary in the kitchen the entire vacation. My tight sphere of concentration seemed impermeable as I worked at crafting Christmas gifts, much to my delight. Unknown to me, however, a subtle and devious brainwashing was taking place. Chile, our pe£ stray cat, noticed the change first, when"! took pity on her usual breakfast of cereal and offered her some American cheese. Whiskers twitching, she carefully sniffed it over, licked once, then returned to lapping up her Cheenos and milk without further pause. "Picky-picky-picky," I scolded. "She doesn't eat that junk," my sister informed me. "But- it's common knowledge that all cat s love cheese!" "Who said?" The cat looked up at this with luminous green eyes, giving me the retarded humanoid look. The night before she had polished off a leftover pork chop with sauerkraut. Case closed. Pity I never questioned the origin of my idea. iThere were other signs. I began to sniff my sweaters and wonder if a switch to powder deodorant would be better. While I laughed at the total absurdity of a doll whose bust increased by rotating her arm, I put-in a grocery request for a new brand of diet soda. By the.end of a week, a vague and nagging sense of dissatisfaction with my physical self had set in. My mother noticed my eyes glazed over between 7 p.m. and midnight, and asked if I needed new glasses. I fought my younger brother over the newest issue of T.V. guide. In short, I was shamefully and disgustingly hooked. It was a nightmare that brought me to my senses. One night I dreamed I had stepped through the television screen and had been mysteriously transported back to my dorm room, a la Alice and the Looking Glass. I had jufet awakened late for class and decided to skip breakfast. A shimmering, animated image of myself stepped out of bed, frowned, and said, "Oh no you don't!" "Who are you?" I gasped? "I'm your conscience. Breakfast eaters have more energy during the day, so you just march rjght over to the dining diall and| eat." Not being one to mess around with the supernatural, I did so, a bit shaky. Next I ran to history class, but by the time I had shucked off my coat it was too late. "And that's the way it was, 200 years ago today," the prof concluded, i I. headed for , the Forum, conscious that my mouth Idid not .have that justbrushed tingling freshness. Socially outcast,. I crammed for .the day's chemistry quiz. The professor cradled his| microphone.- "Today we're changing our format somewhat By random selection, a few of the students will determine the grade of each section." The tension builds antT- explodes into squeals as narr es are called. "Sarah Martens, come en down!" Shocked and grateful, knees q taking, I skittered down the aisle. Hiindrsds of eyes were upon me. We four elite cast sideways glances at each other. A hush fell over the room ¦ i • What is the formula for acetic acid?" My turn. Throat, choked with saliva, mind tumbling, stammering; "H . H . . . H . . . HC2 . . . : the audience tit-'' tered, began to Uugh, and then the roar filled the room. [Mercifully, I woke up, sweating and shaking. Reality is a blessed thing. Collegian Columnist What's so important about having the right career these days? I'm about to be degree-d by this universi ty and have been asking a lot of questions lately. But everything I ask seems to reach back to this initial'question and fatally bite its tail. I am not a disillusioned vocat ional' pessim ist. I just don'l think projecting myself 20 years into the future is all t hai important. And after all , when I'm 45, I'll be a different person. How can I tell what that stranger will want to be doing with himself? - | l But like it or not, I'm now in the middle of all this. I have spent some time and considerable energy In pursuit of that sheepskin, and I do have somewhat of an obligation to seek to apply it in the world. I offer reflections on certain elemerits of graduation that I hope will be familiar. Not advice , but comforting illustration. First off is this busi ness of a resume. It is your key to success. Your personal resume is a highly concentrated elixir of your life 's ambi tions and noble honors. Everybody I know has a great deal of trouble in preparing one. Because the resume presents such difficulty, there are,plenty pf places to learn how to go about writing one. There are •filmstrips , guidebooks, manuals and counselors. ' ' Wait till you see; some of the sample resumes. One I was given belonged to a past editor of this newspaper. TO THE EDITOR: In response to the editorial in The Daily Collegian on Dec. 16, 1975, the mechanism for escort services still exist. As Betty Moore, Student Help Center, advised IFC in a' presentation Thursday, Dec. 11, 1975, her agency still is prepared to coordinate the service. The automatic answering service for the Help Center telephone currently refers callers to this department and Ritenour Health Center after hours; thus it could be 24 hour service. It merely needs to be activated by IFC and ARHS again. • Your suggestion that patrol cars be dispatched to provide taxi service or private, chauffeur service to any female who calls is fundamentally rejected for the following reasons: 1. We do not|have tne number of officers available to provide this function and adequately perform the primary task for which they are employed. * 2. I do not ibelieve the University should provide unfair competition to existing public services (taxi). 3. ' In your editorial you state an existing alternative; taxicabs •are radio-dispatched and they provide the service (as does the campus bus loop). We would be happy to assist in again activating the escort service as coordinated by the Help Center; however, we had no such request until your editorial. The Student Help Center advised they have received approximately six telephone requests for the escort service this year.. In reviewing the number of rapes and attempted rapes on campu&,from January of 1974 until today, I find that two (one rape and one attempt) involved trips across the campus. The remainder occurred in a building or near buildings when the victim left the building momentarily, butwithout a destination. Whether or not either of the two incidents involving a trip could have been prevented ) is, of course, unknown. If they could have, the service would have been beneficial. And everyone 's ideas are bett er of course, than anyone else's. 1 have given up. I am no longer going to-rearrange my resume to please different advisers. If all the counselors and filmst rips have different outlooks on resume philosophy, then so do the employers. This simple realization can save you a lot of work. Lambs to the slaughter , thousands of "recent college graduates and Seniors" filed upto do what looked very [much tike register here at school. Only thi s registration was for the world of work and kll the courses were filled. I really should have left the hotel ten One of the little bookl ets you got at Operation Native Talent listed majors and interests that you mig ht have studied in col lege. Under those headings were a. number of employers stationed in booths in the ballroom and interested in people from such disciplines . Ail you had to do was go and âlk to them. The first thing you begin to notice about your Opportunities Index is that a lot of companies are willing to talk to people from any field. McDonalds , Friendly Ice Cream, and the American Hospital Supp ly Corporation to name a few. There was no heading for journalism so I went to be interviewed by the companies with the shortest lines . It happened that First Jersey Securit ies was listed under advertising and had a short line. I sat down in front of a young -executive who wanted me to sell stock for his researc h operation. What has this to do with-advertising? "Oh, very much," he said. "We want you to use your communicatio n skills to convince people that we know; what we are talking about when it comes to buyin g stock. Your house plants have just survived the dreariest 30 days of the physical year. Sunlight was scarce and living rooms were either too drafty or too dry. And since you left them alone while you holidayed, some of those green youngsters worked up a great thirst. Water. The, stuff of life. Philadelpbians may pronounce it "wooder," but it still makes up some 90 per cent of the average plant. It's up to you, the local connoisseur of cultivation, to ensure that your plants get enough of that juicy stuff. "Nature is not to be conquered," naturalist EueU Gibbons once said. "You have toadapt, not nature." Well, Euell is gone (reports say his departure was due to natural causes) and a glance around the average home shows that his remark was slightly in error. According to a recent estimate, approximately 350 million plants are adapting to indoor life in the United States (a special i hank you to Chevron Oil Company for this amazing stat). However, they can only adapt to a certain extent. You must provide the water; the most important need that must be met. It can be a tough one to meet, too. There's water, water everywhere, the man says, and hardly a drop of it is worth drinking. House plants everywhere nod their nodes in agreement with this painful fact. Ureen i numos , 4, ! Take Centre County water for instance. It flows through tons of limestone and picks up pH-changing calcium that many of your acid-loving (low pH) plants would just as soon do without . This high pH water is known as hard water. The treatment "that softens the life-giving sauce only makes thjngs worse. The calcium is substituted for with 1 sodium during a1 procedure known as ion exchange. Plants really don't need'a lot of sodium as anyone who has _ poured Morton Salt on their soil can attest. Those brown ; leaf tips might be the result of "Culliganitfe." Actually, any water that you can drink is probably safe for your plants. The hard water is better. Indeed, results in a recent poll of a top-notch horticulture professor at The Pennsylvania State University indicated that the , hard water doesn't do any damage at all. Ypur plant's soil mix is probably acid enough to nullify the calcium's effort at pH change. Your regular fertilizations have helped here, too. What you water with is not as important as-how you water. The most important rule to remember is that you ¦° must water thoroughly. Keep watering until you can see ' seepage in the saucer. Token drops on the soil surface, even if applied every day, do not reach those roots deep in .. the bowels of the pot. ( For most plants, water only when the soil surface is dry ~ to the touch and no sooner. Hairy, thorny, thick or waxyo leaved plants need to be watered less often than smooth, tlun-leaved kinds. Plants growing in plastic or glazed containers don't need water as often as those growing in clay pots. ¦ Plants living in pots without drainage holes need to.be watered thoroughly enough that the deepest roots get ' kissed but aren't waterlogged. Good luck with these. Keep in mind that these instructions apply to how often and not how much. Soil should always be soaked and the excess water quickly (within an hour) disposed of. One final hint : plants in really warm or sunny areas need water more often than those in cool or shaded spots. That spindly, off-white plant way over in the corner begged for sun and warmth for a while and doesn't need water. It's dead. That's final.
