Choose well gritted routes in deep winter and remember it’s darkat 4pm.Check your bike - salty roads speed up corrosion in winter, so keep your chainand gears well oiled. A quick A-B-C check (air, brakes, chain) before every ridewill flag up any major faults with your bike....is back! Our work with young people in the UKSpring term welcomes back The Big Pedal, the UK’s largest interschoolcycling and scooting challenge. Last year we surged pastthe one million journeys to school target for the first time, thisyear we’d like to pass two million. We’d love as many schools as possible to take part, so pleaseask any you work with to join us – there are great prizes, rangingfrom bike and scooter storage to cycle stunt shows by some of theworld’s top riders. The challenge lasts 15 days, but it is schools’best 10 which will count, or they can do the three-day challenge ifit suits them better. It’s free to enter and on top of being a huge amount of fun, it helpsmake a lasting change. When we surveyed schools who took part,96% of respondents said it raised awareness of cycling andscooting and 76% said that pupils continued to cycle and scootto school following the event.Schools can enter this year as individual classes or as wholeschoolsand they can register now at www.bigpedal.org.ukDon’t forget, we also have Sustrans’ Big Shift – an onlinechallenge available all year round, including all forms of activetravel (walking, cycling, scooting and skating). It’s free and we’llset targets for schools to make a Small Step, Big Stride or GiantLeap with their active journeys. They can take part atwww.bigshift.sustrans.org.ukSomething else to look forward to in January is our new onlineshop where schools can purchase Sustrans resources, incentives and goodies to support and inspire active travel, suchas for our Superheroes scheme. The positive experiences of allthe children that you have read about in this newsletter are the culmination of more than 19 years of Sustransand our officers working with schools, colleges and young people.Without your support, many children would not have the opportunity to enjoy independent and active journeys inand around their communities, so a huge thank you from us on their behalf. The long-term benefits ofcreating healthy and sustainable journeys will be shared by every one of us – in terms of our health, theenvironment and the wider economy. If you like the sound of what Sustrans does and think that more schools, colleges and young people in your areacould benefit from our work, or you want to know more, please get in touch.email youngpeople@sustrans.org.ukphone 0117 915 0100online www.sustrans.org.ukSustrans is grateful for the continued support of our schools work in Perth and Kinross from thefollowing:Perth and Kinross Sustrans I Bike newsletter, Winter-Spring 2014-15
