During this course, students willexperience and participate in various forms of entertainment, and will thusbecome familiar with the integral role entertainment plays in theAmerican culture.Critical Approaches to the MediaThis course aims to “immerse” students in English as it is used in themedia. Sources from the visual and print media will provide a departure


point for analysis, discussion and debate. These primary sources will besupplemented by readings on how to develop a critical attitude toward themedia. Students will be expected to formulate their own ideas andopinions about the media and the social and political forces that shape it.A presentation will form part of the assessment for this course. Students will beexpected to research, retrieve, study and discuss the relevant statutory andcase law and apply this to sample cases; they will be asked to read andinterpret specimen documents and to formulate legal ‘opinions’ forpotential ‘clients’; they will also be required to present legal arguments insimulation exercises, thus relating the principles of business law to thecurrent practice. Particular attention will be paid to expandingparticipants’ business and legal vocabulary and enhancing their powers oflogical expression, while consolidating their general communicativecompetence and rhetorical skills. Theescalating cost of court proceedings has served as an impetus for potentiallitigants to resort to ADR and, in particular, to mediation – the use of aneutral third party to assist disputants in reaching a compromise.Mediation currently plays a key role in the settlement of disputes betweenbusiness partners in the international arena. Students will be encouragedto apply the legal and linguistic knowledge they have acquired in previousEnglish for Lawyers courses as they explore the theoretical issuesinvolved in ADR/mediation. In the practice-oriented part of the courseparticipants will have the opportunity to enhance their oral (negotiation)skills in simulation exercises based on authentic case material. A varietyof follow-up writing assignments will help to consolidate lexical andgrammatical competence.Advanced Legal Communication Skills (English for Lawyers 6)As a successful lawyer, you will have to be a persuasive communicatorboth on paper and face to face. Whether writing an opinion or letter,negotiating on behalf of a client, or making a presentation in court, youwill need to know how to communicate the best factual and legalarguments to support your case. This course will focus on thevariety of forms that corporate crime and business fraud can take, whileassessing the thesis that corporations may have a natural propensitytowards committing fraud. Students will apply theory to practice byworking with a selection of case studies where they will create, formulateand present the most effective crime prevention/damage limitationstrategy for the chosen scenario. Corruption: The Enron case Bribery: The BAE and Siemens cases Fraud: The Bernie Madoff casePublic RelationsPublic Relations (PR) is essentially the art of image creation and imagemanipulation. This course will focus on PR as a method by which acorporation can attempt to build and maintain a positive public image ofitself – even in the face of bad news and a hostile environment.A variety of well-known PR campaigns and disasters will be analysed inor<strong>der</strong> to identify the most effective communication strategies that acorporation can use to protect and improve its public image. Specificcommunication techniques of persuasion and influence, such asneutralizing negative information and issue reframing, will also bestudied in detail.Students will then apply the theory to practice by working with aselection of ‘PR disaster’ case-studies involving corporations such asWal-Mart and McDonalds.
