the 200th birthday of the Academy<br />

with a year of exciting events, special programs,<br />

public engagement activities, and a<br />

very special yearlong exhibit, The Academy<br />

at 200: The Nature of Discovery. Explore<br />

highlights from our collections during specially<br />

themed months, watch real scientists<br />

at work, and even get up close with rare<br />

specimens from our behind-the-scenes collections.<br />

American Swedish Historical Museum The<br />

first museum in the United States dedicated<br />

to Swedish and Swedish American history<br />

and culture, the ASHM also highlights the<br />

impact of Swedes on the Philadelphia region.<br />

A newly renovated exhibition tells the story<br />

of the Delaware Valley’s earliest European<br />

settlers and their New Sweden Colony (1638-<br />

1655). Other rooms highlight contributions of<br />

Swedes and Swedish Americans including soprano<br />

Jenny Lind, feminist Fredrika Bremer,<br />

engineer John Ericsson, inventor Alfred<br />

Nobel, and artists Carl Milles, Carl Larsson<br />

and Birger Sandzén. Special exhibitions feature<br />

contemporary art and design, as well as<br />

Swedish history and culture. Tu-F 10-4, Sa-Su<br />

12-4. Closed Mon & holidays. $8 adults, $6<br />
