It was a hot summer day.Amari and her brother Leo wereplaying soccer. Amari kickedthe soccer ball and watched itsail right into a treetop!“It’s too high to reach,”said Leo. “We’ll have to buy anew ball.”2


<strong>The</strong>y went home and countedtheir money.“We can’t even buy a tennisball with this!” said Leo.“I know a great way to makesome money!” Amari said. “Alemonade stand!”“We could set it up at theplayground!” cried Leo.3


<strong>Lemonade</strong>“Great idea,” said Amari. “Lotsof hot, thirsty kids will come overto buy our cool drinks.”“Okay, what are we waitingfor?” said Leo.4


Amari and Leo took moneyfrom their piggy banks and wentto the store with their father.<strong>The</strong>y bought sugar and lotsof lemons. <strong>The</strong>y bought ice,too. <strong>The</strong>n they raced back totheir house before the ice had achance to melt.5


First, Amari and Leo made asign for their lemonade stand.Next, they began to make abatch of lemonade. <strong>The</strong>ir fathercut the lemons in half, andAmari squeezed them again andagain to get out every drop ofjuice. <strong>The</strong> boys mixed all theingredients together in a pitcher.6


IceColdLem 0n2 5ade¢<strong>The</strong>y walked along a path tothe playground and set up theirlemonade stand. It didn’t takelong before a boy came over tobuy some lemonade. He frowned.“Yuck! This lemonade is sour!”exclaimed the boy.7


Amari and Leo gave the boyhis money back. <strong>The</strong>n they wenthome to fix their lemonade.<strong>The</strong>y added sugar. But thenthe lemonade was too sweet.<strong>The</strong>y added more lemon. Butnothing seemed to make thelemonade taste just right.8


“I know something we can do!”cried Amari. “When Grandmabakes her special lemon cake,she adds bits of lemon peel to it.Let’s do that to our lemonade.”<strong>The</strong>y asked their father tohelp them shave the lemon peeland add it to the lemonade.“Yum! I could drink this allday,” said Leo.9


10Everyone else felt the sameway. Leo and Amari sold theirlemonade as fast as they couldmake it. In less than a week,they had enough money to buya new soccer ball. In fact, theybought two! After all, Amariwas a powerful kicker.
