Mount BaldyResort ExpansionMaster Plan February 20053.2 MOUNTAIN TERRAIN ASSESSMENT3.2.1 Slope AnalysisThe Slope Analysis (Figure 3-2) divides the topography of the study area into a range of skiablegradients as they relate to each of the primary skier/snowboarder skill classes. These are asfollows:Table 6. Ski Area Slope Analysis CriteriaColourGradientCriteriaCharacteristicsWhite 0-8%• Too flat to ski/snowboard, ideal for base areadevelopmentGreen 8-25% • Ideal for Beginner skiers/snowboardersBlue 25-45% • Ideal for Intermediate skiers/snowboardersGrey 45-80% • Ideal for Advanced and Expert skiers/snowboardersRed > 80%• Too steep for skiing/snowboarding traildevelopment, increased avalanche hazardThe result delineates the general character of the land, illustrating that the study area has agood to excellent mix of terrain, predominated by intermediate oriented slopes. Further, it isimportant to note that almost none of the potential ski terrain lands are too steep for traildevelopment. In sum, it is clear that there is significant potential for the establishment additionalalpine skiing development on the lands in consideration. It is equally apparent that there are significant base area development opportunities on landsthat are relatively flat and conducive to establishing the required resort staging facilities. Thesefacilities could include village areas, parking, and the associated residential developmentnecessary to create a well-balanced attraction. These same relatively flat lands offer a widerange of opportunity for Nordic trail system development.Refer to Figure 3-2 – The Slope Analysis on the following page for reference.Page 23Brent Harley & Associates Inc.The Resort Planning Group
