Keeping Interactive Notebooks in French Class:The Right SideInteractive Notebooks will be used in this class daily to help you learn and remember importantvocabulary, grammar, and culture aspects of the French language. Why do they work? Becausethis notebook style uses both the right and left hemispheres of the brain to help you sort,categorize, remember and creatively interact with the information you are gaining. You mustactively do something with the new concepts before you really understand them. The more youprocess information the more you begin to understand it. This leads to longer retention.What goes on the right side? INPUT goes on the right side• Notes/vocabulary from readings and lectures on grammar and culture.• Textbook activities.• All teacher generated information (i.e. handouts)The Keys to Fantastic Right Sides Always start the page with the date (in French: see board) and title at the top. Right sides have odd numbered pages (write numbers on top right corner.) The right side is for writing/gluing down information you are given in class. Write legibly. Use highlighting and color to make important information stand out. Use notes for lecture, discussion, text, etc.

The left side incorporates and reflects how you learn French as well as what you learn inFrench.What goes on the left side? OUTPUT goes on the left side.Examples of left side items:• Brainstorming• Data and graphs you generate• Poetry and songs (your own)• Quickwrites• Graphic organizers• Crosswords• Venn diagrams• Cartoons, drawings, pictures you take of something you made• Writing prompts• Summaries from stories read in or out of class• Your questions• Other creative avenues for processing informationThe Keys to Fantastic Left Sides Left sides have even numbered pages (write numbers on top left corner.) Every left side page gets used. Always use color… It helps the brain learn and organize information.“What if I Forget to Bring My FIN (French Interactive Notebook)?”You need to write down notes on a sheet of notebook paper and copy them into your FINafter class. You are accountable for EVERY SINGLE page in the FIN. The same goes if youmiss class – get the notes from either a FIN Buddy or from Mademoiselle’s copy.
