<strong>Issue</strong><strong>79</strong><strong>December</strong>2008Editor: Vernon Dunhill email: vernon.dunhill@ntlworld.comWatton WheelersSunday 26 th October 2008 CTC Emitremmus DeserverRide (Summertime Reversed)Six Watton Wheelers took part in the annual CyclistsTouring Club organised road ride from Fairlands ValleyPark Stevenage through East Herts and Essex to SaffronWalden and back.The weather although not cold was very damp and wewere glad of the refreshments provided on route at thevarious check points where as the ride was run underrules governing the average speed we had to have ourroute cards time stamped. Many riders had puncturesalthough our group only sustained one.Total mileage was 62 miles at a minimum overall averageincluding stops of 8mph.Sunday 2nd November, Leader MaryFour riders left Watton in the mist and joined another sixat East Herts Station. We went through Hartham, alongthe road from Bengeo down to the Wadesmill roundaboutand took a left turn along a track behind Hanbury Manor.Across to Cold Christmas, up to Rush Green and backdown to Wareside. Then to Widford, down Nether Street,off road, and through some very large puddles and arrivedin Sawbridgeworth. Fig Fairs just happened to havea Craft Market in the memorial hall and the wonderful ladiesfrom the W.I. had made some home made cakesand bacon sandwiches etc. Return on a similar route viaWare and along the towpath. Pat and Dave managed tohave 4 punctures between them. Approx. 30miles andback to Watton at 3pm.Sunday 9 th November 2008 Leader TrevorTwo start points for this ride, Watton and Morrisons inWelwyn Garden City and with a total of 18 riders the ridewas split into two parts to aid control.Essentially the ride followed the old railway line, nowknown as the Alban Way, through Hatfield to St Albans,where Cornish pasties and a hot drink were enjoyed.The return was via Sandridge and Stanborough to Morrisonsand then back to Watton. Sunday 26 th OctoberWatton RamblersA group of nine walkers, led by Derek Henley, setout from Watton to Hertford via Bramfield encounteringpavement, road, field edge, farmyard, footpath,bridle way, playing fields, woodland quagmire andploughed field in constant drizzle.After recovering over an excellent lunch and drink atthe Bridge House the group, joined by two othermembers, returned in much improved conditions viaWaterford, Stapleford and Watton Green. Despitethe weather it proved an enjoyable walk.Saturday 15 th NovemberThis 'long morning walk' led by Peter Aknai took usin an easterly direction towards Gregory's farm, thento Coomb's Wood, over the Bourne (usually dry, butrunning a little after all the rain of the last few days),then on to the woods behind Munden Parva.Bright sunshine made the autumn walk very pleasantand the countryside has never looked better. Wereturned via the road to Whemstead, turning ontofootpath No.7 to cut across the fields back to MillLane.Lunch and a pint at the George & Dragon crowned asatisfying 6.5 mile walk for 11 members of WattonRamblers.The „Walking – the way to Health’ group stillmeets every Tuesday at the Sportsfield at 10.00 amfor a 2 hour walk in the countryside around Watton.These walks are conducted at your own pace andall are welcome - just turn up and join in.Details from rosemarycooper@ntlworld.comTel: 01920 411622Please remember to observe the country code at all times, dogs andchildren are welcome but need to be accompanied and kept undercontrol.
