The rolls have been boxedand sorted as complete sets <strong>in</strong> chronological order by company. There are a smallnumber <strong>of</strong> draw<strong>in</strong>gs that do not fall <strong>in</strong>to this sequence.Conditions govern<strong>in</strong>g access:Access is given <strong>in</strong> accordance with the NRM access policy. Material from this archive isavailable to researchers through the NRM Read<strong>in</strong>g Room. The archive is fully open toresearchers. Because the rolls are <strong>in</strong>tact these are sometimes heavy and unwieldy, thereforeparticular care has to be taken <strong>in</strong> handl<strong>in</strong>g the draw<strong>in</strong>gs. Several <strong>of</strong> the eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g draw<strong>in</strong>gswith<strong>in</strong> this archive are physically fragile due to earlier storage methods and small sectionsmay be miss<strong>in</strong>g.Conditions govern<strong>in</strong>g reproduction:It is not possible to provide copies <strong>of</strong> these draw<strong>in</strong>gs, other than those from the twoboxes <strong>of</strong> LNER draw<strong>in</strong>gs. None <strong>of</strong> the draw<strong>in</strong>gs have been micr<strong>of</strong>ilmed at this stageand there are no surrogates. It may be possible to trace micr<strong>of</strong>orm versions onaperture cards for the miss<strong>in</strong>g General Arrangement draw<strong>in</strong>gs by reference to theformer British Rail/ Oxford Publish<strong>in</strong>g Co series available for reference at the<strong>National</strong> Railway Museum.Language:EnglishPhysical Characteristics & technical requirements:The majority <strong>of</strong> the draw<strong>in</strong>gs are wax l<strong>in</strong>en affixed <strong>in</strong> sets to wooden rods. One ortwo rolls have become detached from their rolls. There are a small number <strong>of</strong>miscellaneous loose draw<strong>in</strong>gs and bluepr<strong>in</strong>ts, ma<strong>in</strong>ly from the later London & NorthEastern Railway period.F<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g aids:There is a tabulated catalogue, which provides a list<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the boxes and a generaldescription <strong>of</strong> their contents. As most rolls <strong>in</strong>clude an <strong>in</strong>dex and the number<strong>in</strong>gsystem with<strong>in</strong> the rolls does not lend itself to a full list <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>dividual draw<strong>in</strong>gs, thishas not been attempted.
