Comfort.Comfort is not a luxury, it's a necessity. Adriver sitting comfortably drives safer.Volvo, therefore, go to considerable lengthsto make sure that you sit comfortably-byanyone's standards. Take the front seats forexample; considered by many to be the bestand safest available. Securely anchored tothe floor for safety's sake, they incorporatemore adjustment possibilities than you maybe used to. The backrest, which has anintegral head restraint, is infinitely variabledown to a reclining position. An adjustablelumbar support is built into the backrest toprovide extra pressure to the small of theback. Control.Behind the wheel of a Volvo 244 you willfind an impressive array of instruments,switches and warning lights. Blended intothe smooth contours of the fascia, thewhole layout has been designed for easyreading and finger-tip control.There is a warning light which indicatesdipped headlight, tail light, brake light andeven rear number plate light failure. Otherwarning lights show brake circuit failure,parking brake application, alternator charge,oil pressure, turn indicators, main beam,heated rear window, choke and hazardwarning.The heating and ventilation controls arehoused in the centre console. Powerfor the Volvo 244.There are two alternative power units availablewith the Volvo 244. The DL model ispowered by the 100 hp DIN version. In theGL model you will find the 123 hp DIN typewith Continuous Injection fuel supply, andfully transistorised ignition system. Bothunits are 2.1 litre capacity with four cylinders.The aluminium alloy cylinder head is ofthe cross flow type, and incorporates anoverhead camshaft which offers better responseand low speed pulling power. Thecross flow type cylinder head also reducesthe risk of vapour locks and running-on.Whichever you choose, both engines requireonly economy grade fuel, which is aboost not only to your pocket but also tothe environment.Automatic or manual?Whether you prefer automatic or manual,you can be assured that gear changing willbe a smooth operation. With the automatictransmission you still have the opportunityto choose your gears, and first gear can beselected at speeds up to 37 mph, a greathelp if you want to slow down quickly.I n the case of the manual, there are twoalternatives. On the DL model there is astraight forward fully synchronised fourspeed unit with a built-in reverse interlockmechanism. The GL unit has the same featuresplus electrically operated overdrivewhich is activated by a switch housed inthe top of the gear lever.


Driveability.When you drive the Volvo 244 your immediateimpression will be how comfortableand well planned everything is. But whatwill probably surprise you is its wonderfulmanoeuvrability; the ease with which youcan move the car in and out of those tightparking spots.On the open road the Volvo 244 really excels.The precise rack and pinion steeringleads the car effortlessly along windingroads. Apart from the steering, the stabilisedspring strut front suspension and live regaxle contribute greatly to the superb overallhandling characteristics. In addition, the caris fitted with wide steel braced radial tyresfor maximum grip on tight corners, and firmcontrol in the wet.The net result of these combined featuresis a car that performs extremely well in allconditions. Its road holding, handling andride make travelling a pleasure and allowthe driver to approach his driving in a relaxedand confident manner.Volvo's rack and pinion steering gives immediate responseto steering wheel movement. With a tight turningcircle of only 32'2" the Volvo 244 is much moremanoeuvrable than many small cars despite the wealthof room inside.


Safetyis a strong point.There is a growing tendency for people tobecome more safety conscious. We arepleased, because one of our strong pointsis safety. But it is nice toknow that in the event of a collision, impactabsorbing front and rear crumple zones protectthe passenger compartment, which isitself a sturdy safety cage.Years of research, often unique, mean thattoday's Volvo 244 offers the driver and passengera high level of protection. This is, ofcourse, provided that the seat belts areworn properly.The structural strength and torsional rigidity of Volvo's rugged unitised body forms thebasis for overall passenger protection, but surrounding the passenger compartmentitself is a cage of closed section box profiles of immense strength and body metalcrumple zones at the front and the rear.


The Volvo 244's steering system gives fivefold safety in a head-on collision: 1) Thelower steering rod folds downwards; 2) The steering tube collapses telescopically;3) The steering rod moves downwards away from the driver; 4) The wheel's anchorageto the column crumples, and 5) The wide bolstered hub spreads the impact pressure.Sturdy tubular members built into thedoors give protection from the sides andburst-proof latches prevent the doorsfrom flying open even when the car isdamaged extensively.Few other cars give as much all-roundvisibility as the Volvo 244 - better than90%. The electrically heated rear windowand very efficient ventilation makesure that driving visibility is not impairedby misty windows.Each half of the triangle-split, dual circuit brakingsystem operates on both front wheels and one of eachof the rear wheels simultaneously. So, even if onecircuit fails completely, the other will still brake throughtwo front wheels and one rear wheel giving about 80%of full effect. This power assisted system has discbrakes on all wheels, separate rear wheel drums for thehandbrake, and relief valves to the rear to prevent therear wheels locking up prematurely in an emergency.The brake lines are made of rust-resistant alloy consistingmainly of copper and nickel.


Built-in quality.. .Volvo style.In Sweden you can buy virtually any makeof car. Thus, the non-partisan Swedish MotorVehicle Inspection Company has a lot ofcars to look at. They have computed theprobable life expectancy of a Volvo at 16.6years - almost two years longer than thenext nearest make.To achieve this durability, quality control isi mperative. Design, materials, assemblywork; all must be first-rate.To the car owner, rust is an expense and the cause of what could be a dangerouscar. This is why Volvo builds exposed body pressings of hot-dipped galvanisedsheet steel, in all about 3.5 square metres being used per car. Which explains someof the lasting quality of a Volvo 244.


Other explanations are: the door sills are cavity-ventilated by theslipstream and the outsides of the sills are sprayed with polyester,the insides with a rust inhibitor.The more vulnerable parts of the exhaust system, including therear silencer, are made of aluminised sheet steel. This also helpskeep the car in top trim and fewer visits to the workshop meanless costly motoring.From the ground up, Volvo rustproofing is applied as follows:1) phosphating of raw body metal; 2) total submersion in an electro-dipbath of primer; 3) oven hardening; 4) application of fillercoat and joint sealing by means of compound and caulking; 5)application of top coats. On top of this, the underbody is treatedwith rustproofing fluid and compound at the factory. A rust inhibitingagent is also sprayed into all closed members and sections tocombat rust.In a similar manner, the brake pipes of the Volvo 244 are made of avery rust-resistant alloy, the main constituents of which are copperand nickel. This is primarily for safety's sake; understandably, itsaves you money too.


The Volvo 244 GL -the. performance car.The 244 GL was created to meet the needsof those people who spend more time onthe road. The people to whom driving isimportant, and very often enjoyable. Peoplewho appreciate a car with a little more flairand style of its own.The Volvo 244 GL has plenty of flair. This isnot only provided by the sun-roof, metallicpaint, and delicately tinted windows. Nor bythe 5.5" wide wheels with low profile steelradial tyres, which offer excellent road holding.Or even by the superb real hide seatand backrest facings (the driver's seat iselectrically heated!). Not to mention thenon-slip padded sports steering wheel. TheGL flair is very much performance too. Itsfour cylinder 2.1 litre, aluminium head, overheadcamshaft engine produces a brisk123 hp DIN. This is achieved in no smallpart by the efficient Continuous Injection( CI) fuel delivery system.
