Bremen, the port city on the Weser river, can look back 

on over 1,200 years of history. The magnificent Weser- 

Renaissance town hall and the grand old statue of 

Roland on the market square (both UNESCO World 

Heritage) are two of the city’s most famous landmarks. 

The Schnoor, the oldest district in Bremen, and the 

unusual buildings along delightful little Böttcherstrasse 

take you back to a bygone age. Bremen’s best-known 

monument and its emblem is the statue of the Town 

Musicians with the donkey, dog, cat and rooster from 

the Brothers Grimm fairytale.

Innovation by tradition – breaking new ground has

centres, highly regarded universities and pioneering 

technologies, Bremen has been responsible for a 

number of projects that prove that science is anything 

but dry and boring. The Hanseatic city also endeavours 

to maintain close links between science and the local

Bremen’s seafaring traditions are still alive and well 

today and have a big part to play in its unique appeal. 

The Schlachte Embankment runs right beside the 

Weser river and is a magnet for locals and tourists alike. 

There are always people milling around by the water, 

especially when the sun is out. 

Among Bremen’s more unusual locations with a maritime 

flair is the fast-growing Überseestadt district. The 

former city docks are being transformed into a vibrant 

community for the 21st century – in an area five times 

the size of the city centre.

Cologne has its carnival, Munich has its beer festival. 

In Bremen, the celebrations go on all year round. 

There’s something for everyone, from gravity-defying 

acrobats and graceful dancers to chart-breaking pop 

acts. Not a month goes by without some exciting event 

taking place in the city: the Freimarkt (the oldest funfair 

in Germany), the music and maritime festivals, Europe’s 

biggest 6-day cycle race, musicals and plays, prestigious 

art exhibitions and last but not least the traditional 

Christmas market and the accompanying stalls along 

the Schlachte Embankment.

Bremen town hall and the Roland statue – World Heritage 

The town hall and the Roland statue on the market square are on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. The importance of the 

town hall is demonstrated by the distinctive style of its architecture, known as Weser Renaissance, which was prominent in north 

Germany in the late Renaissance period. Bremen’s Roland is one of the oldest and most impressive of the Roland statues which were 

erected in Germany during the Middle Ages as symbols of liberty and trading rights. Together, these two attractions bear testimony 

to the history of the Free City Republic of Bremen, from the 9th century through to the present day.

There is also lots of discover in the 

region surrounding Bremen. Set in the 

idyllic Teufelsmoor, the artists‘ village of 

Worpswede has numerous exhibitions 

and galleries to visit. Topping the bill in 

Bremerhaven is the new Harbour Worlds 

complex with the Klimahaus, German 

Emigration Centre, German Maritime 

Museum and the Zoo am Meer. 

In the coastal resort of Cuxhaven on 

the North Sea there is a fine swimming 

beach, mudflat walks to Neuwerk island 

and boat trips to Heligoland for tax-free 

shopping. 

How to get to Bremen 

Travelling by plane 

Frequent connections from a number of 

national and international airports. The 

airport is just a few minutes by tram from 

the city centre. 

Travelling by train 

InterCityExpress (ICE) and InterCity/ 

EuroCity (IC/EC) services to the city 

centre and one of Germany’s most 

modern railway stations. 

By car/coach 

The Bremer Kreuz intersection is a major 

transport hub linking the A27 Cuxhaven- 

Bremerhaven-Hannover autobahn and 

the A1 Hamburg-Osnabrück-Rhineland 

autobahn. 

Easy access to the city‘s attractions 

Long before you reach the city centre the tourist information system 

and parking information signs will direct you to attractions, hotels 

and available car parks. Alternatively, you can use the park+ride 

scheme that connects with the tram and bus (BSAG) services, which 

is free if you‘re using a Brepark car park. You‘ll also find information 

panels at prominent locations throughout the city centre. 

Please note: 

From 1 January 2010 to 30 June 2011 cars with the special yellow 

or green discs are allowed to enter the Bremen low-emission zone 

(LEZ). If you are staying in accommodation within the LEZ you do 

not require a disc, as long as you can show your hotel voucher 

or booking confirmation.
