Twenty-four nations showed up for the Von Cramm Cup competition.| BETTERLIFE winter 20126The US had made it to the final round via a win in its round robin group, and a semi-final winover #3 seeded France. Despite a 3 – 0 win, there were some tense moments. Cheney outlastedformer #1 Frenchman Xavier LeMoine in a 3 hour, 20 minute marathon. Larry Turville, playing#1 for the US, added his own anxious moments by going down 2 – 5 in the second set beforerunning off 5 straight games to clinch the tie. Dawson and Wulf completed the sweep witha doubles win, and the stage was set for the final against surprise finalist Australia, who hadupset #2 Spain in their semi. The final was played on a sparkling day on Center Court. Cheney opened by beating the Aussie#2, Ray Bray, 4 – 6, 6 – 2, 6 – 4, with a single service break determining the third set. Next camethe battle between long-time World #1 Andrew Rae, new to the 60 & over, and last year’s WorldChampion in the 60’s, Larry Turville. Turville had been nursing a groin pull all week and wasprobably not at full strength as he succumbed to Rae’s unrelenting consistency and pressure6 – 2, 6 – 1.That left it all up to the rookies Dawson and Wulf, playing Rae and Max Bates, the #1 seed inthe upcoming world doubles competition. After dropping the first two games, Tony and Paulfound their rhythm, and never looked back, winning 6 – 4, 6 – 2. It was an extraordinaryeffort for two players getting their baptism of fire. | BETTERLIFE winter 201212FUNDAMENTALCONCEPTSFOR TRAINING AND EATING RIGHTSpencer Tatum is the Fitness Director at DC Ranch Village. Spencerhas extensive knowledge in training, fitness, and nutrition and shares hisknowledge regularly on a local radio show. Below are a few fundamental conceptsof training and eating that everyone can benefit from:bySpencer Tatum1. Start with “Ready, Fire, Aim!” Just get moving!Training and nutrition are always changing. The knowledge of the body is always changing. Atthe Village, we are always looking for ways and informationto improve people’s health and wellness,so it’s a good idea not to get caught up in finding theperfect program or diet.2. Write down your goals and tell them tosomeone. You will be held more accountablethis way. Members always have done this task, andwe then discuss successes and challenges in theirprogram every week. Also, set daily, weekly andmonthly goals that are achievable. It makes thebigger picture easier to achieve.3. Train from the ground up and from themiddle out. Try to perform exercises from astanding position. As Americans, we sit or laydown for about 20 hours out of a 24 hour day. When we sit or lie down, we cause dysfunction inour muscles. Our hip flexors and gluteus tighten up.If our gluteus and hip flexors tighten up, our jointscan’t move properly. The muscles dictatehow our body is going to move. If ourmuscles are moving and absorbingthe stress from exercise properly, the stress will not go to ourjoints, and we will get theresults we want from ourtraining. Also, we need totrain in multiple planesTHECOREneeds to be trainedin different planesof motion.of motion because welive in multiple planesof motion. To performmovement in differentplanes of motion, wemust have a strong middlepillar or core. Core trainingis not doing 100 sit-ups. Thecore starts in the middle ofour back and ends around themiddle of our thighs. The core needsto be trained in different planes of motion, too—the different planes of motion are Sagittal(Forward and Backward), Frontal (Lateral), andTransverse (Rotational).4. Mobility before stability! We are all bornwith excellent mobility. As we grow, we start losingour mobility due to sitting and not performingmobility work to keep it. If you want to see how tomove properly, watch a 2-year-old child move. A2-year-old can move properly in all directions, eventhough he may not be as strong as an adult. Mostpeople do not perform any type of foam rolling orstretching. Foam rolling and stretching are keyaspects of a great training program. One of thebest investments a person a can make is a foamroller which is a 6-inch-by-3 feet piece of foam thatis rolled up and down on the muscle. The rollerallows myofascial releases in skeletal muscle. It islike taking the knots out of the rope—in fact, youcould say a foam roller is a “poor man’s massage.”It is important to roll before we stretch. The rollingtakes the knots out of the muscles before themuscles are lengthened. We must have mobility beforewe strengthen. When a person lacks mobilityand proceeds to perform strengthening exercises,he is putting a load on dysfunction. When a personputs an external load on a dysfunctional joint ormovement, he is setting himself up for injury. Ourgoals in training are to reduce injury and improveperformance. Performance can be weightloss or athletic performance.5. 3 for 3 rule! The 3 for 3 rule is eating a carbohydrate,a protein, and a fat every 3 hours. Our bodiesare like high-performance automobiles. We need toput the high-octane fuel in them. If you want yourbody to operate at a high level and get the resultsthat you want, you must fuel it properly. A person’smetabolism is like a fire, which needs fuel—andfuel of the right type. The body needs fuel every 3hours or it goes into starvation mode. Starvationmode holds onto fats and slows down the metabolismrate. Our body is smart and is constantlyadapting to its surroundings. Here are a few rulesof when it comes to food choices:A. Eat more chicken and fish and less redmeat. Lean red meat is great source of protein, but most people do better with chicken andfish. Also, choose non-processed meats. Processedmeats like lunch meats, hot dogs, andfast food meats are loaded with chemicals thatdamage our digestive systems and bodies.B. Get your carbohydrates from fruits andvegetables. In America, we consume toomuch bread and simple sugars. Fruits andvegetables are a better source of carbohydratesdue to the antioxidants and vitamin levels inthem. I am also a fan of eating your carbohydratesin the morning versus at night, due tothe increased activity level in the morningcompared to the evening.C. Eat fat to burn fat! The right kinds of fats aremuch needed in our diets. Unsaturated fatsare very much needed for fat loss. Examples ofunsaturated fats are almonds, avocados, oliveoil, etc. These fats also help in lubrication ofour joints. We are excited about helping you change your life!witner 2012 BETTERLIFE | 13

listen toTHE EXPERT| BETTERLIFE winter 201214VITAMIN DARE YOU GETTING ENOUGH OF THIS SUPER NUTRIENT?Vitamin D has always been known as the bone-buildingvitamin. However, are you aware that almost every human cell in our bodyrelies on it? If you are deficient in this vitamin, your body will fail to work atits potential—including your metabolism.Experts believe that up to 77 percent of Americans are vitamin D deficient (defined as having blood levels ofless than 30 nanograms per milliliter). So why do we come up so short, especially since vitamin D is one of thefew vitamins our bodies can make? Sunlight converts a cholesterol-like substance naturally found in the skininto D. The challenge is, thanks to UV rays and skin cancer, soaking up sun to make more D would do you moreharm than good. For your skin to make enough vitamin D, you would need direct midday summer sunlight on ahuge portion of your body for 15 minutes a day—risking serious sun damage. It’s even more difficult for people ofcolor to make D as the melanin in dark skin decreases vitamin D production by up to 90 percent. In the past few years, research has suggested that vitamin D might help relieve mood disorders because it seemsto increase the amounts of serotonin, one of the neurotransmitters responsible for mood. In particular, vitaminD seems to help the type of depression called—seasonal affective disorder (SAD)—or the winter blues. Vitamin Dalso plays a positive role in heart disease, metabolism, pregnancy problems, birth defects, skin and other cancerssuch as colon, breast, and prostate, and multiple sclerosis. As a result, vitamin D’s daily requirements for adultshave increased from 200 IUs to at least 600 IUs, and possibly more. I recommend that my clients first have theirvitamin D levels checked and then for most, to take 1,000 IUs daily.Wondering what foods and beverages are rich in vitamin D? The next time you visit the grocery store, look forfish such as salmon with bones, fat free or low-fat fortified milk, fortified soy milk and egg yolks. Because vitaminD-rich foods are so limited, it’s often beneficial to take a daily multivitamin with 600 IUs of vitamin D3. With theNew Year upon us, I highly encourage you to create a New Year’s Intention to have your vitamin D level checkedthe next time you visit your physician. Keep me posted! Wishing you a healthy and successful 2012.Chrissy Barth, Registered Dietitian and Sports Nutritionist. For more information, contact Chrissy at CvbarthRD@aol.com4 STEPSTO A BETTER YOU THIS YEARWith 66% of Americans being overweight or obese it is no surprisethat fitness and nutrition is the number 2 new year’s resolution people make rightbehind spending more quality time with friends and family! So how do you getback on track after the holiday diet splurge? Here are a few easy tips to give you afresh start this New Year!Make a fresh start and forget about the over indulgence or past diet failures. This is a time to start anew soforget all of the overeating you may have done over the holidays.Dump all the holiday leftovers and the tempting diet sabotage in your cupboards. Better yet, donate allof this extra food to someone who needs it! Why keep food around that you feel guilty about eating afterwards, donate it to someone in need rather than your waist line!Set REALISTIC goals. Often people fail because they have no goals in mind or their goals are too extreme. For example, thinking you will never eat sugar again is unrealistic and is setting you up for failure. Makesmall, attainable goals to help you reach a bigger goal in the future. For example, tackle one vice at a time!Maybe week one cut down to 2 frozen yogurts per week, then eventually cut down to 1 frozen yogurt per week, then maybe you will only have 1 frozen yogurt every 2 months! These small changes really add up to a big lifestyle change.Try something new once per week and have one staple healthy meal once per week! This keeps foodnew and exciting and teaching you how to look forward to a healthy meal! Eventually, you may only have one“cheat meal” per month because you found new healthy meals to look forward to. Try having a healthy foodof the world night once per week and create healthy dishes either alone, with your family, or with a group offriends and make an event of it!Chances are this year you are ready to make changes to be the best you that you can be! Why not strike whilethe iron is hot and your motivation is at an all time high! focus onMEMBERSSo what was it like to finish the race? It was the mostamazing thing. Nothing compares to it: It’s unexplainable.I was so happy at the end of the race, even thoughI was pretty much toast physically. You know, I neverunderstood why people would collapse when theycrossed the finish line at a race like that, but now I getit. Your body is so perfectly aligned with your mentalgoals when you’re competing. I could have gone tenmore miles to get to the finish line, but once it wasover, even the littlest thing was a struggle. Just steppingup on the curb to get to the car felt like climbingMt. Everest. Were there a lot of people cheering you on? Oh yeah.Joe was there. My parents and grandparents, a coupleof aunts and uncles, cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Keeble fromswimming. Even though I did the race, there are somany other people that I have to give credit to becausethey were so inspiring and supportive.| BETTERLIFE winter 201218IRONMANTHIS CAMELBACK VILLAGE EMPLOYEE IS WINNING PEOPLEOVER WITH HIS WINNING WAYS.You can’t help but like and admire 19-year-old Jean-Paul Oei(pronounced “we”), and feel like there’s hope for the next generation. JP embodiesa work ethic, focus, and drive that most kids his age could learn a lot from, andhe makes sacrifice after sacrifice—for school, work, and training—with a smilepermanently planted on his face.JP seems to live at the Camelback Club, fulfillingresponsibilities as both Assistant Coach with SwimNeptune and Lead Fitness Attendant. When he’s notworking, he’s working out, training for the next bigchallenge. His most recent achievement was finishing 10th inhis age group at the Ford Ironman Arizona, a grueling140.6-mile test of physical and mental endurance. He was the second-youngest person out of the field ofnearly 3,000 competitors, and finished in an impressive12 hours and 36 minutes. We caught up with JPshortly after the November 20th race, and talked tohim about his commitment to being the best he can be.When did you first get interested in athletics? Jean-PaulOei: When I was 12 or 13, I started swimming withcoach Joe Zemaitis of Swim Neptune. He was a professionaltriathlete, and I thought that was pretty cool.WITH AHEART OF GOLDDid you like swimming competitively? I got into it rightaway. It was exciting and challenging. When I was 15,I swam in the Annual Alcatraz Classic: Swim with theCenturions and came in third place overall. It was thesame year that seven-year-old Braxton Bilbrey fromGlendale, Arizona became one of the youngest peopleever to swim the 1.4-mile route. Braxton, Joe and hisbrother John, and I all went to the event together. It seems like Joe has been a big influence on you. Oh,he sure has been, and still is. About four years ago, Idecided that I wanted to do the Ironman before I was20. Coach Joe was a big part of that, because he holdsthe 19-and-under world record for Ironman. Not manypeople do that race to begin with, and to do it beforeyou’re 20 is really pretty rare. You have to be at least 18to compete, so there’s a pretty tight, two-year windowif you want to do it before you’re 20. Joe really inspiredme to reach this goal, and he’s been an incrediblementor. He guided me throughout my training, whichI started about a year ago, and he got me an incredible,high-end bike that I never could have afforded.Did you train with a group or on your own? My schooland work schedule prevented me from joining a team, but a lot of my friends do sprint triathlons so I was ableto train with them sometimes. I also ran with a fewcross-country girls I knew from high school.Did you ever just want to give it up? Every once in awhile I’d take a day or two off, but I had a pretty goodidea of what I was taking on and what I had to do tosucceed. To do anything that requires sacrifice, youcan’t just kind of want it. You have to really want it.Everyone picks what they really want, and this is whatI chose.Did you just focus on the three different sports inyour training? Pretty much. When I quit swimmingcompetitively after high school, I picked up weighttraining and gained a lot of mass that I didn’t needfor the Ironman. So I had to spend a lot of time in thebeginning just trying to cut down my weight. I didn’tdo a lot of swimming because I felt pretty confident inthe water, so I focused mainly on running and biking.I mixed the two into what they call bricks, doing along ride followed by a run to get used to going from alow-impact activity to a high-impact one.Is there anything you wish you had done differently?I could have done more cycling. It’s a very technicalsport and I only had 10 months to learn it. It’s somethingI want to get better at.How did your eating habits change? When I used totrain for short swimming events, like the 200 freestyleand the 100 butterfly, I could eat anything I wanted. But when you’re training for an event that’s over tenhours long, you need a different game plan. I was reallyconscientious about what I put into my body, makingsure that everything would digest smoothly. I alsohad to learn to eat while riding and running. For raceday, I ate the four Snickers bars that I brought with me,plus everything the event organizers were handingout on the course. You’ll probably be in their position some day. What’s itlike being an inspiration to the kids you coach? I hopeso. I really like working with the kids and helpingthem have fun and accomplish what they’re therefor. Everyone’s there for a different reason, and I wantto make them the best swimmers they can possiblybe. As Lead Fitness Attendant I also teach the juniorcertification classes, so kids can learn how to use theexercise equipment at the club. It’s really rewardingto help kids stay active and learn the importance ofbeing healthy. There’s so much technology around us,we tend to forget about ourselves and the incrediblemachines that are keeping us alive…If we maintain andtake care of our bodies, we can have a really good life. Are you interestedin pursuing a careerin fitness? I’m goingto ASU to pursue adegree in either businessor kinesiology, which is the studyof how the humanbody moves. AndI hope I can keepcoaching swimmersfor a while. But if Ican get into the firedepartment in thenext couple of years,I think that wouldbe the best fit for me.I really like helpingpeople, and if I canget paid for that I’llbe really happy.¬ far left JP during thebiking portion of the race¬ Getting out of the wetsuitto start the bike rideJP with his IronmanFinisher medalwitner 2012 BETTERLIFE | 19
