Since 1846 ...Hutchins, an Anglican day and boarding school for boys, is one of Australia’s oldestand most distinguished schools. Hutchins was established in 1846 and has acommitment to excellence and a progressive and forward-looking curriculum.Hutchins encourages high academic standards.Sporting and cultural achievements, sound moral values and strong communityinvolvement are equally valued. Boys of all faiths are welcomed into the Schoolwhere a sense of tradition, a supportive and caring staff and a sense of personalcommitment are important elements of life.LocationToday’s Hutchins campus is located about five kilometres from the centre ofTasmania’s capital city, Hobart. The main campus lies on the slopes of MountNelson, overlooking the picturesque Derwent River and is adjacent to the Universityof Tasmania. The Outdoor Education Centre is located at Southport, approximately100km south from Hobart on the edge of the World Heritage Wilderness.A boys’ schoolHutchins is a school for boys and makes a special effort to give them a balancedunderstanding of what it means to be male in the modern world. Staff members helpboys identify their personal strengths and weaknesses and teach them to deal withthe challenges of sexism and gender stereotyping.Hutchins provides opportunities for boys to build strong friendships and to supporteach other.Hutchins is at the leading edge of development in education for boys. It is afounding member of Boys’ Schools : An International Coalition. The wider curriculumThe Centre for ExcellenceBoys develop at different rates and have different needs. The Centre for Excellenceoffers programs which recognise this and which help boys having difficulties withliteracy or numeracy as well as extending the gifted and talented students.Pastoral careIn addition to the School Chaplain and the School Counsellor, Class Teachers andthe House Tutors know and care for the boys. The Heads of Houses and Heads ofSchool are also there to provide support, advice and help. The role of the Prefectsand of the SRC, and the Befriender and Peer Tutoring Programs are importantelements of pastoral care.The ÒBig BrotherÓ scheme, an important part of pastoral care, encouragesolder students to join boys in the Junior School and ELC for reading lessons andplayground activities.Strong friendships exist between boys of all ages.Bullying is not tolerated at Hutchins. Boys and staff work together to prevent anyphysical, verbal or emotional bullying.Sport and Outdoor EducationSport and Outdoor Education are important at Hutchins and there is a wide range tochoose from. Sailing, tennis, scuba diving, surfing, cricket, rowing, football, rugby,table tennis, badminton, hockey, water polo are just some of the activities available.The Hutchins Outdoor Education Centre is a natural area of coastal bush land whichadjoins the World Heritage Southwest Wilderness at Southport, 100 kilometressouth of Hobart. A well-appointed classroom, the central amenities building andaccommodation cabins form a base for camping, bushwalking, surfing, abseiling,snow camps, canoeing, marine biology studies and many other beach activities.Hutchins also uses Maria Island and Freycinet National Parks in its outdooreducation programs.School of Performing ArtsAt the beginning of 2000 St Michael’s Collegiate and Hutchins opened the Schoolof Performing Arts, an exciting and innovative “school within a school” for studentswith outstanding talents in music, drama, and dance. The facilities offered includeindoor and outdoor rehearsal and performance spaces, recording studios, state ofthe art lighting and sound equipment, sprung floor dance and drama studios, andexhibition and reception areas.


ChapelThe Chapel of St Thomas, dedicated and opened in 1971 by Bishop Robert Davies,has a prominent position on the Campus and in the life of Hutchins. The Chapel isopen for private prayer and quiet reflection each day during school time. Each yearthe Chaplain offers preparation courses to help boys decide whether or not theywish to be Baptised or Confirmed. All students and families are welcome to attendany service advertised in the Term Calendar. All boys from Kindergarten to Year12 attend regular services in the Chapel as part of their school life. An emphasis isplaced on students playing a significant part in these services.Burbury HouseThe Student ResidenceHutchins welcomes Australian and International students into Burbury House, theon-campus Student Residence. The Director of Boarding and the Resident HouseTutors assist Boarders during their evening or weekend study periods. Supervisionand support are also provided twenty-four hours per day, seven days a week. Care istaken to provide a firm but relaxed atmosphere where students are encouraged to beself-reliant while at the same time showing care and consideration for others.The style of accommodation offered depends on the student’s age, with olderboys usually in single rooms. Students in the Residence enjoy access to relaxationareas, computers, music rooms, a heated swimming pool, the gymnasium andtennis courts.
