The wider curriculumThe Centre for ExcellenceBoys develop at different rates and have different needs. The Centre for Excellenceoffers programs which recognise this and which help boys having difficulties withliteracy or numeracy as well as extending the gifted and talented students.Pastoral careIn addition to the School Chaplain and the School Counsellor, Class Teachers andthe House Tutors know and care for the boys. The Heads of Houses and Heads ofSchool are also there to provide support, advice and help. The role of the Prefectsand of the SRC, and the Befriender and Peer Tutoring Programs are importantelements of pastoral care.The ÒBig BrotherÓ scheme, an important part of pastoral care, encouragesolder students to join boys in the Junior School and ELC for reading lessons andplayground activities.Strong friendships exist between boys of all ages.Bullying is not tolerated at Hutchins. Boys and staff work together to prevent anyphysical, verbal or emotional bullying.Sport and Outdoor EducationSport and Outdoor Education are important at Hutchins and there is a wide range tochoose from. Sailing, tennis, scuba diving, surfing, cricket, rowing, football, rugby,table tennis, badminton, hockey, water polo are just some of the activities available.The Hutchins Outdoor Education Centre is a natural area of coastal bush land whichadjoins the World Heritage Southwest Wilderness at Southport, 100 kilometressouth of Hobart. A well-appointed classroom, the central amenities building andaccommodation cabins form a base for camping, bushwalking, surfing, abseiling,snow camps, canoeing, marine biology studies and many other beach activities.Hutchins also uses Maria Island and Freycinet National Parks in its outdooreducation programs.School of Performing ArtsAt the beginning of 2000 St Michael’s Collegiate and Hutchins opened the Schoolof Performing Arts, an exciting and innovative “school within a school” for studentswith outstanding talents in music, drama, and dance. The facilities offered includeindoor and outdoor rehearsal and performance spaces, recording studios, state ofthe art lighting and sound equipment, sprung floor dance and drama studios, andexhibition and reception areas.
