Safer Sex Intervention Adaptation KitGlossaryAdaptationThe process of making changes to an evidence-based program to make it more suitable for a particularpopulation and/or an organization’s capacity, without compromising or deleting its core components.BDI Logic ModelBehavior-Determinant-Intervention Logic Model. A program-planning tool that guides program developersthrough four sequential and clearly linked steps: (1) establishing a health goal; (2) identifying andselecting the individual or group behaviors directly related to that health goal; (3) identifying and selectingthe determinants related to those behaviors; and (4) developing intervention activities directly related tothose determinants.ContraceptionThe intentional prevention of conception by artificial or natural means.Core ComponentsProgram characteristics that must be kept intact when the intervention is being replicated or adapted for itto produce program outcomes similar to those demonstrated in the original evaluation research. Corecomponents can be organized into three categories: content, pedagogy, and implementation.Core Content ComponentsRelate to what is being taught, specifically the knowledge, attitudes, values, norms, skills, and so forthaddressed in the program’s learning activities that are most likely to change sexual behaviors.Core Implementation ComponentsRelate to some of the logistics responsible for an environment conducive to learning, such as programsetting, facilitator-to-youth ratio, and dosage and sequence of sessions.Core Pedagogical ComponentsRelate to how the content is taught, including the teaching methods, strategies, and youth–facilitatorinteractions that contribute to the program’s effectiveness.DemographicsSocial and vital statistics associated with a particular population. Examples of variables typicallydescribed by demographics include age, gender, socioeconomic status, ethnicity/race, immigrationstatus, and sexual orientation.DemonstrationsHands-on practice of a skill or an activity.
