About Playhouse 22
It's almost impossible to believe that, after an extended absence from the theatre scene, Playhouse 22 has just
completed an exciting and successful first season at our new home on Cranbury Road. Not a group to rest on
our laurels, we have an even more exciting season planned for our 2010-2011 season - and we want you to be
part of it!
We hope you will enjoy our upcoming season, opening with the smash popular musical, "How to Succeed in
Business Without Really Trying" - to be revived on Broadway in 2011, but you can see it with us first!! This is
followed by Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible,” “Curtains,” William Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice” and
the Broadway Blockbuster-hit “Hairspray.” In addition, we are offering two "Black Box" shows as part of our “On
the Edge” series, presenting “As Bees in Honey Drown” and “All the King’s Women” to add to our existing offering
of shows. And if that weren't enough, treat yourself and your family to our annual holiday offering, "A
Christmas Carol". As you can see, we are offering our community a fun, enjoyable, and entertaining year of
quality theatre.
As always, please feel free to visit our website at www.Playhouse22.org for updated information about our shows,
presentations and special events!
Thank you for your continued patronage to Playhouse 22. For over 52 years we have been part of the East
Brunswick community, and we look forward to another 50 years plus of giving you quality entertainment at an
affordable price. See you at the Playhouse!
Sincerely,
About the Show:
The Crucible was first performed at the Martin Beck Theater on Broadway on
January 22, 1953. The reviews of the first production, which Miller felt was stylized
and too cold, were largely hostile, although The New York Times noted "a
powerful play [in a] driving performance." Nonetheless, the production won the
1953 "Best Play" Tony Award. A year later a new production succeeded and
the play became a classic. Today it is studied in high schools and universities,
because of its status as a revolutionary work of theater and for its allegorical relationship
to testimony given before the House Committee On Un-American Activities
during the 1950s. It is a central work in the canon of American drama.
The play was adapted for film twice, by Jean-Paul Sartre as the 1957 film Les
Sorcières de Salem and by Miller himself as the 1996 film The Crucible, the latter
with a cast including Paul Scofield, Daniel Day-Lewis and Winona Ryder.
Miller's adaptation earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best
Screenplay based on Previously Produced Material, his only nomination. The
play was also adapted by composer Robert Ward into an opera, The Crucible,
which was first performed in 1961 and received the Pulitzer Prize.
