Since Les Michael's unbeaten baseballers play six of their remaining nine OC games on the home field, they get the nod as probable champions and NCAA tournament entries. But the odds are against the Bishop's stretching their Edwards Field win streak to 29 by year's end. Tennis Hopes Dim Prospects for a first or second place finish in OC tennis look bleak at the moment for the Frasermen, but the "luck of the draw" has much to do with crowning champions in that tourney. Cottcmuin Athlete ofthe Week Freshman Doug Cotterman, stellar Bishop weight man, was named Athlete of the Week Sunday for his record-shatteri- ng discus throw in the Cincinnati-Capit- al meet Wednesday and his nine-point scoring spree in Saturday's Denison-Akro- n runaway. Cotterman bettered his own discus record for the third time a week ago, heaving the discus 151 ft. 3 in. for an easy first place. A year ago, the Mentor, O., trackman was the nation's second best discus thrower, having tossed the lighter platter 1C8 ft. Saturday the freshman turned in a first in the discus, second in the shot put and fourth in the pole vault. nyon lielfers id BUdl Bennett Athletic Foe By John Everls The Battling Bishop golfers will be out to open Monnett Week End athletics on a winning note Friday when they tackle Kenyon at the Delaware Country Club. OWU's freshman-dominate- d swingers topped the Lords 11 to 4V4 two weeks ago in Gambier, O. During the past week Coach Dick Gordin's linksmen were unusually busy, facing five teams in four days. Lose To Big Red Friday the Bishops met Denison and Wittenberg on the Delaware course. The Big Red had too much for the Red and Black, trouncing their hosts 14 to 5. Ohio Wesleyan day's record at evened the 1- -1 by beating the Tigers from Springfield, 15 to 5. On Apr. 29 the Bishops visi 1 ilO Peopis ted Oberlin for a two-wa- y match. Finding Akron and Western Reserve already on hand, Coach Gordin agreed to a four-wa- y affair. After complicated computing, OWU found itself victor- ious over the host Yeomen, 11 to 8, and Western Reserve, 18 to 1. The Zippers finished on top, besting the Red and Black, 14 to 5. Cowman Best Bishop Bill Cowman took medalist honors for the Bishops on the Oberlin course with an 80. Rod Meyers toured the course in 84, while Chris ter Kuile and Jack Winters tied with 85. Cowman also was top Ohio Wesleyan golfer in the triangular meet with Denison and Wittenberg, turning in a good 78. Gene Cawood and Myers scored 79, but Winters and ter Kuile ran into trouble and finished near 90. Nicholson, spoke to students of Astronomy 101 Saturday, Apr. 26, on the history of planet Jupiter and its 12 moons. Four of these moons were discovered by Nicholson, a distinction which is shared only by Galileo, who discovered the first four in 1610. Nicholson has retired from active stellar observations after having spent over 40 years at Palomar, Mount Wilson, and other observatories. He has made significant studies of solar behavior and of Jupiter and its satellites. He is currently touring colleges and universities in the United States to study the condition of their science facilities. Nicholson said Jupiter's moons IX and XII were accidental discoveries while satellites X and XI were found after a deliberate search with the 100-inc- h reflecting telescope at Mt. Wilson Observatory in California. His first discovery, Nicholson recalled, was made in 1914 when he was involved in an intensive study of Jupiter and its (then) eight known satellites. In 1938, while most of the staff of Mt. Wilson was attending an astronomy convention in Sweden, the giant telescope was left to him for a whole week. The moons Nicholson discovered are estimated to be less than 20 miles in diameter. Their distances from Jupiter range from 7 million to over 14 million miles. Except for two of the satellites, Nicholson said he has seen all the others through telescopes. The unobserved two show up only in photographs, he said. They are of the 19th stellar magnitude, which, according to Nicholson, can be likened to the brightness of a candle seen from several thousand .miles away. o Fliers Seek SC, Faculty Approval The faculty and S'.udent Council are expected to consider the Condor Flying Club's application for recognition as a student activity sometime this month, according to Club President Nyall Bemis. Colonel Harold V. Larson will be the Club's faculty advisor. Ten members are now fiying the club airplane, a Taylorcraft, kept at Delaware Municipal Airport. Three club members have already made their first solo flight. The Club meets every Tuesday night in the. ROTC Building to learn Civil Aeronautics regulations and navigation. Members, after paying an $80 initiation fee, are entitled to fly the Club airplane at cost.
