Murphywill discuss how Yeats used Carleton,seeing him as the celebrator of the true <strong>Irish</strong>peasant to enhance Yeats’s own authorityand reputation as a critic and rising writerover others in the 1890’s, but how WilliamCarleton was not quite how Yeats imaginedhim to be.Carleton was the masculine <strong>Irish</strong> peasantarchetype Yeats used in his poetry anddrama against the effeminate <strong>Irish</strong> peasantof the writings of the English critic MatthewArnold.
