PACE meeting, and to Monte Bay, Principal, of the new West CTA for sharing information on this exciting
new school located on Charleston just West of the 215. Guest speaker Jura Leak, Project Facilitator, Title I
HOPE informed us on the number of homeless high school students and the issues they face each day.

CENTENNIAL HIGH SCHOOL NAVY JUNIOR ROTC PASS-IN-REVIEW
Congratulations to the 202 cadets of the Centennial High School NJROTC program as they were
inspected on Friday 29 January 2010. Captain Daniel Wenceslao and Commander Dirk Hebert along with
Trustee Garvey, Principal Day, City Councilmen Anthony and Ross, Dr. Denson and I were fortunate to
participate in the inspection.
I was honored to award Cadet/Commander Keyawna Danai, 2009-10 Cadet/Battalion Comanding Officer,
The “Legion of Valor Bronze Cross for Achievement.” This award is given annually to outstanding cadets to
recognize achievement of scholastic excellence in naval science and academic subjects and to stimulate
development of leadership. The 10 cadets selected are chose out of over 65,000 cadets nationwide.
Cadet Danai is in the top 8% of her class at 58 of 585 and has been awarded a scholarship by the United
States Naval Academy Foundation to attend 1 of 24 Naval Academy Prep schools in 2010 and then she
will attend the US Naval Academy in 2011.

PALO VERDE HIGH SCHOOL WINS REGIONAL SCIENCE BOWL
Congratulations to the Palo Verde Science Bowl Team. Coaches Cheryl Waldman and Frank Franco will
take the team to Washington DC to represent the District and the State of Nevada in the national

11 New Empowerment
Schools
The Clark County School District
announced 11 new schools that
will receive the Empowerment
School designation beginning in
the 2010-2011 school year. The
status will provide the schools
with the empowerment benefits
within existing budgets.

Honored with $25,000
Milken Educator Awards
Congratulations to the two Clark
County educators that were just
honored with the $25,000 Milken
Educator Awards. Mike Patterson, a
math teacher at the Advanced
Technologies Academy and Jeremy
Gregersen, an English/Language
teacher at the Meadows School, a
private facility.
Going Green: CCSD
Welcomes New Hybrid
School Bus to Its Fleet
Bus could achieve up to 30 percent
better fuel mileage
The hybrid vehicle, only the second
of its kind manufactured by Thomas
Built Buses, is estimated to achieve
up to 30 percent better fuel mileage
and began service on Tuesday,
February 16, 2010. A state-of-the-art
bus that utilizes some of the newest
green technology features available.
The cost differential of the hybrid bus
was paid for with settlement funds
from the Nevada Department of
Transportation and the Sierra Club,
who aim to promote cleaner air for
the students of the Clark County
School District.
Nevada Reading Week
Bill Abrams, the founder of
Nevada Reading Week, believed
with all his heart in the need to
encourage Nevada’s children to
read for pleasure as well as for
information. In 1975, to inspire
our communities to celebrate
reading, Abrams initiated a
statewide week of reading
celebration.
The Nevada Department of
Education began a statewide
initiative for Nevada teachers and
librarians to celebrate reading
through shared thematic activities.
Many of our local celebrities,
parents and community members
participate in the festivities by
telling stories and reading to our
students. The Nevada Reading
Week for 2009-2010 is “Pick a
book from the reading garden.”
Nevada Reading will be celebrated
the week of March 1-5, 2010, but
schools will determine what week
in March works best for them
depending on their school calendar.
Math Portion of the
Nevada High School
Proficiency Exam
The math portion of the Nevada
High School Proficiency Exam will
take place on Tuesday, March 9.
Parents of high school sophomores,
as well as juniors and seniors, who
have not already passed the exam,
can help their child prepare for the
exam by using internet resources.
Students can obtain information by
visiting
www.cpd.ccsd.net/math/math.html,
or they can prepare for the math
exam by utilizing an online tutorial
at mathtest.ccsd.net, or by obtaining
free tutoring at their school or public
library.
