A Message From the President and Executive Director…
United Way of Clark, Champaign & Madison Counties is unveiling a new bold crisp
look. The look is LIVE UNITED…Give, Advocate and Volunteer. You have seen this
branding on national and regional United Way ads. Now, this new look will also
represent your local United Way. LIVE UNITED is here to stay.
LIVE UNITED is about advancing the common good. LIVE UNITED means working
with our community partners, other funders, our affiliated agencies, donors,
supporting companies and volunteers to help create opportunities for a better life
for all. Components of LIVE UNITED are:
  – Being involved with the annual United Way Campaign is a good place
to start. It’s a fantastic way to invest hard earned dollars into programs and
initiatives that are making a measurable difference in people’s lives locally. We have
demonstrated the power of Club 52, giving one dollar or more a week or increasing
your donation by one dollar a week. Over 3,800 people have taken the Club 52
Pledge during the past two years and made a significant difference.
  – Everyone deserves opportunities to have a good life: quality
education leading to a stable job, enough income to support a family, access to
quality health care, and assistance in times of emergency. Advocating for improved
services at a community and systems level supports advancing the common good.
  – Being a United Way and/or community volunteer brings unlimited
value to our community. Giving of time and leadership to community projects,
governance oversight and making funding decisions is priceless.
There would be no United Ways without volunteers!
Heroes are people who help others. There are thousands of local United Way
heroes. We are asking our heroes to take another big step and LIVE UNITED!
Help us advance the common good. Help us create opportunities for a better life
for all!
GROWING OUR POTENTIAL
THROUGH PARTNERSHIPS
A Partnership for Success Promotes Healthy Neighborhoods
United Way sought to increase our involvement in
neighborhood revitalization by contacting the City of
Springfield. We asked how United Way could better serve
and promote healthy neighborhoods, where people feel
safe, secure and proud to live. The City of Springfield
identified a critical home and property that truly was a
gateway into a great Springfield neighborhood. The
house was a candidate for the government sponsored
Neighborhood Stabilization Project (NSP) program. Without
significant attention, this home could have continued to
deteriorate and potentially create some uncertainty about
the stability of the area. The United Way, in cooperation
with their partners at the City of Springfield, Speedway LLC
and their many outstanding business partners, renovated to
nearly new status, a home that had been vacant for two years.
During this substantial project, a great deal of work
was performed:
throughout the area; it was a win – win project for all!
Get Up and Go After School Program Helps Youth Learn Healthy Habits
WESTERN CLARK COUNTY PARTNERSHIP
prompting United Way to look for options to help fill the
void for afterschool programs in Western Clark County.
National Trail Parks and Recreation District was planning
to expand services into New Carlisle, so discussions were
initiated to provide services to elementary school children
in that area.
The Get Up and Go After School Program began in

with initial funding from United Way. Four sessions of the
program were offered to children in the 3rd through 5th
additional United Way funding.
The goal of the Get Up and Go After School Program
is to improve the lives of the youth in Western Clark
County by providing fun physical fitness opportunities
and nutritional education. The children involved in the
program were introduced to new non-traditional fitness
activities along with traditional sports and nutrition
education in hopes they would find an activity they
enjoyed and healthy eating habits that would put them
on a path to lifelong good health.
GIVE. ADVOCATE. VOLUNTEER.
Activities that were part of the program included
traditional recreational sports such as basketball and
soccer and non-traditional ones such as Zumbatonic
fitness, dance, martial arts, walking and jumping
competitions. The children also attended field trips to
local destinations that included hiking at Charleston Falls,
The Fitness Cellar, bowling, roller skating and activities at
Smith Park in New Carlisle.
Nutrition lessons were also part of the curriculum. The
weekly lessons focused on topics such as the food pyramid,
portion control, food labels and more. Healthy snacks were
provided to the children each week.
National Trail Parks and Recreation District also partnered
with several local agencies, such as the Ohio State
University Extension, Wittenberg University and Clark
County Combined Health District to provide educational
programs. The OSU program “Eat Smart, Be Active, Learn
How” was offered to the parents of the children involved

program. The Clark County Combined Health District
conducted BMI screenings for the program. Wittenberg
University assisted with the evaluation process and
several students used the program for their thesis
projects and community service hours.
The Get Up and Go After School Program recently
received a 1st place Awards of Excellence from the
Ohio Park and Recreation Association. We congratulate
the Parks District staff and their partners for this special
award. This is another example of the quality work and
service delivered by United Way Partners and an example
of advancing the common good!
The Promise of a Neighborhood Coming Together
Two years ago, Clark County Funders’ Forum
received a proposal for the development of a Promise
Neighborhood in the Lincoln Elementary School
District with full support from Springfield City Schools
and Dr. David Estrop, Superintendent. The Funders’
Forum includes United Way, local foundations, city and
county government and other non-profit agencies that
have the capacity to fund community initiatives. After
“The culture of the school
has been transformed to
create higher aspirations
about conduct and about
academic work.”
discussion and research, the funders collectively pledged
$100,000 per year for three years to launch the Promise
Neighborhood Initiative.
Springfield Promise
Neighborhood (SPN) is built
upon the idea that education
is the most important
way to end generational
poverty. The initiative
focuses on the children in
the attendance zone of Lincoln Elementary School in
Springfield, Ohio, a neighborhood school and part of
Springfield City School District. High need factors for
6 | LIVE UNITED
the Lincoln neighborhood include a high incidence of
poverty, low academic achievement scores, and low
scores on kindergarten readiness assessments. Assets of
the Lincoln neighborhood include housing and economic
neighborhood stabilization efforts, as well as the assets
of schools, churches, parents, neighbors, teachers, and
youth. SPN develops and coordinates the leadership of
residents and the people who work in the community to
identify and respond to community concerns. It uses a
ground up approach to create an environment that is a
good place to live and raise a family.
Now in its second year of operation, SPN has made
important steps. Residents have formed an association
that meets each week. They have formed work teams
around the issues of safety, recreation, and neighborhood
beautification (including school and neighborhood
gardens) that have been identified as significant areas of
concern. The culture of the school has been transformed
to create higher aspirations about conduct and about
academic work. This year, residents and the faculty of
Lincoln School have expanded their efforts to develop
out-of-school enrichment opportunities for youth. Plans
include creating spring and summer opportunities for
youth to learn about food and nutrition. Residents hope
to transform the grounds around Lincoln School to include
recreational opportunities and a lab garden that will
promote healthy living.
United Way is very supportive of this special initiative
and is proud to be one of its partners, supporting the
common good!
2-1-1 ACHIEVES
ACCREDITATION
We hate to brag but…United Way’s 2-1-1 has achieved
international recognition!
Our 2-1-1 is among a select group of organizations to
be accredited by the Alliance of
Information and Referral Systems
(AIRS), one of only 142 Accredited
2-1-1’s in the United States
and Canada. Accreditation is
recognition of excellence in
information and referral services
after successful completion of a
detailed professional accreditation process from the Alliance
of Information and Referral Systems (AIRS). Less than 12% of
all 2-1-1’s have achieved accreditation.
8 | LIVE UNITED
The AIRS Accreditation Program is a multi-phase, 2 year,
process that assesses more than 200 distinct operational
components and includes an expert review of the agency’s
resource database, a “secret shopper” monitoring of service
delivery, and culminates in a detailed onsite review.
2-1-1 has been a part of United Way since 1977. Since then
2-1-1 has been linking people with the resources they need
in Clark and Champaign Counties. Over 18,000 people
received essential information in 2011.
