sustainability
The terms "sustainable" or "green"
are becoming widely used in
newspapers, magazines, annual
reports and advertisements and very
often they are used with a similar
meaning.
What is sustainability?
“Is sustainability the same as a
green initiative?”
It means “meeting the needs of the
present without compromising the
ability of future generations to meet
their own needs.”
The principles of sustainability can
stimulate technological innovation,
advance competitiveness, preserve
natural resources and improve our
quality of life.
Essentially, sustainability is about
process and corporate culture - how
a company chooses to operate.
Sustainable practices are intended to
last and have a positive influence on
living resources.
What is green?
“Green” is the colour and the term
that is commonly used for products
and services created through
sustainable practices. Sherwin-
Williams offers many products that
“A team effort
towards Sustainability”
international spotlight
meet “green” specifications, like
improving air quality (VOCs). AWX,
the global waterborne basecoat/
clearcoat system, is the best example
of the “green” products offering.
Sherwin-Williams is committed to
the implementation and continuous
improvement of sustainable
practices in all aspects of our
business. From innovative and
environmentally–responsible
product design to resource
efficiency and conservation, we
expect that our efforts will translate
into economic success, as well as
respect in the communities we serve.
Reduce waste generation, energy consumption, water use are part
of sustainable practices. Here are two examples of sustainable
business practice:
• SW Emulsion Plant, CEP - Chicago
The facility uses a huge amount of water to clean equipment. By
instituting a recycling program the facility prevents the discharge of
contaminated waste water into the local sewer system while reducing the
amount of water it uses.
• HQ Warrensville Heights – Cleveland, Ohio, Automotive Plant –
Richmond, Kentucky
Both have established extremely effective and sustainable
recycling programs. Employees have recycled 12.6 tons of materials in
2007 and are determined to double that amount in 2008. The
Richmond site recycled more than 324 tons of nonhazardous
waste.
in brief
Carmakers have an environmental
commitment with a sustainability
strategy focuses on increasing fuel
efficiency, on reducing transportrelated
conventional emissions,
dismantling and recycling
programs to reduce wastes,
investing in paint application
process to reduce the VOC
emissions.
How will the car in the future look like?
Do they will still have wheels or
screws to go underwater?
Thirty years after the movie
thriller ‘The Spy Who Loved
Me’ hit the silver screen
“sQuba” is the first car
that can actually ‘fly’
under water. In fact
the scene never really
took place, it was an
animation.
The owner of this
submersible car is a
Swiss company,
Rinspeed and the boss
Frank M. Rinderknecht
is known for his
extraordinary automotive
creations: “For three decades I
have tried to imagine how it
might be possible to build a car that
can fly under water. Now we have
made this dream come true.”
“It is undoubtedly not an easy task to
make a car watertight and pressure
resistant enough to be
manoeuvrable under water. The real
challenge however was to create a
submersible car that moves like a
fish in water.” Says Rinderknecht.
Rinspeed’s Zero-Emission World Debut at the
Geneva Motor Show - March 2008
The occupants’ breathing air comes
from an integrated tank of
compressed air that divers know
from scuba diving. “For safety
reasons we have built the vehicle as
ENERGYNEWS
feature
an open car so that the
occupants can get out
quickly in an emergency.
With an enclosed cabin
opening the door
might be impossible.”
Says Rinderknecht.
But safety wasn’t the
only reason for
choosing an opentop
design: With an
enclosed volume of
just two cubic meters
of air the vehicle
weight would have to
increase by two tons (!) to
counteract the unwanted
buoyancy, giving the “sQuba”
the land mobility of a turtle.
Without occupants the “sQuba”
surfaces automatically.
“The ‘sQuba’ concept car project has
been developed with the aim to
minimize the pollution in every
aspect a zero-emission.
Will the science fiction become reality
in the next future … what’s your
opinion?
customer corner
INTERVIEW
The KDA GROUP is expanding
The KDA Group was created exactly
20 years ago. This company is known
in particular for its multi-brand
garage for heavy vehicles - KDA
TRUCKS - and for the construction
and repair of waste collection
containers - KDA CONSTRUCT.
1988: After 12 years Renault at
Vilvoorde, Karel Bohets, KDA Group
manager, decided to open a garage
for cars for personal transport and
small vans at Machalen. At first he
ran the garage himself but after a
year but after a year, he had a staff of
3, then having moved to another
building, it increased to 5 people.
1995: With his wife, Christel
Ceulemans, Karel Bohets decided to
take over the Fiat dealership in Perk
and move all of his activities
overthere. Another building was
built and used as a garage for repairs.
8
ENERGYNEWS
1998: The company became a MAN
Truck Service Center with 15
employees. Thanks to the success of
the MAN Truck Service Center, it was
decided to suspend the Fiat
dealership by the end of the decade.
2006: Karel Bohets took over
`Magdaleens containerbouw` in
Willebroek, a company specialized in
the construction of waste collection
containers, and transformed it into a
profitable company, KDA
CONSTRUCT.
2007: Karel Bohets bought a
building in the “Cargovil”
industrial zone at Zemst, where he
transferred the
construction of
containers. In the same
year the body repair
shop of the Truck
Center was also moved
to Zemst, and in
September 2009 the
MAN Truck Service
Center garage moved
to the same site.
“At the moment, we work with 27
employees and our company
manages towing and pulling, but my
plan is to become an OMNI-Truck
Center which offers work to twice
the number of employees,” says
Karel Bohets.
You talk about an OMNI-Truck
Center, what does that consist of
exactly?
“We will offer complete service for
transporters. That is, a place where
we can offer everything they need:
maintenance, repairs, service for airconditioning
and tires, windows,
electricity, diesel for articulated
lorries, buses, towing and repair, a
hotel to spend the night, a place to
rest and also a center for professional
development”.
“For this reason, we are looking for
some new partners, perhaps aiming
toward a dealership system", Karl
Bohets explains with pride. "To offer
more services, several years ago we
began a second service for one of
our important clients at Charleroi.
This is an operative winning card on
the Brussels – Namen-Bergen axis”.
Four years ago you decided to
change paint suppliers and you
chose Sherwin-Williams. Why?
“We have had some problems with
the application of the paint. With the
good service that we receive from
our supplier, Bellekens, Sherwin-
Williams’ Syncron® is the only
industrial system that allows us to
determine application according to
color. Even the shine is exceptional.

Thanks to Sherwin-Williams we spray
our containers with a complete
process which makes us unique in
the market.
In January, we will begin using
Sherwin-Williams' AeX line for
Commercial Vehicles and Fleets on
our company vehicles and with our
MAN activities. Syncron® will
continue to be used for industrial
work”.
Thanks to your experience in the
Automotive field and particularly in
using robots, you will soon begin
automatic container welding. This
process will surely increase your
efficiency. Can you explain how the
evolution of technology has helped
you during the years?
“In the fields of warehouse
management and spare parts,
everything happens using
computers and IT processes. The
computer has also changed the
appearance of equipment and
machinery. For this reason we have
also purchased a new air-mix spray
system (Kremlin). The PLC automatic
system shortens times and makes it
possible to change colors in the blink
of an eye".
You've been active in the
automotive and heavy vehicle
industry for more than 20 years.
What do you think are the most
important changes in these sectors?
How will the sector change? Do you
have any advice?
“Unfortunately, the lorry sector has
become even more competitive, like
the automotive industry. This means
that the margins of profit in sales will
continue to shrink and the intervals
between maintenance will increase.
This is precisely why we want to
transform the KDA Group into an
OMNI-Truck Center, to guarantee the
necessary income. At the moment,
we are working on a multi-brand
concept that will have more impact
in the sector".
What do you think of the VOC law
for the environment?
“It’s a law and it must be respected.
Our advantage is that we have a
partner, Sherwin-Williams, that has a
great deal of experience in dealing
with materials, and therefore we do
not foresee any substantial negative
consequences. The KDA Group also
wants to set an example regarding
the environment".
The role of insurance is becoming
more and more important in the
repair of damage to automobiles. Is
customer corner
this true for lorries as well? What do
you think about the intervention of
insurance?
"Even if the role of insurance is less
dominant in the truck sector, we
cannot rule out a rising tendency. In
fact, this intervention is a
consequence of past abuses of
confidence. The KDA Group will
continue to acquire new business
opportunities and thus guarantee
work to its employees".
Service and quality have always
been important to your company.
For this reason, you have planned
some large investments for 2008 (of
about € 11 Million), but what is this
going to be used for? (paint,
construction – warranty programs,
education…)
"The KDA Group operates on three
principal parameters: Earnings,
Quality and Service. The combination
of these elements requires constant
attention, and for this we offer
training and completion courses to
close the circle.
As far as warranty, we work with
some suppliers who consider the
guarantee of their products an
obligation and not a mere
phenomenon.
At KDA we consider our warranty the
same way and we apply when it is
necessary”.
Questions & Answers
What is the most critical aspect that will affect the
performance of waterborne technology?
Air quality is the most critical aspect that effects the
performance of waterborne coatings.
Does AWX cover better than solvent borne?
The AWX Waterborne System holds more pigment than solvent
borne systems. Hiding is usually improved 25 – 33%.
Does AWX cost more?
Our experience proves to us, that AWX is a productive and
profitable alternative solution for collision centers to solvent
borne coatings. With the right equipment, mindset and training,
Waterborne can be every bit as (or even more) productive as
a solvent borne system.
Does the mixing of AWX have a complicated conversion step?
No – AWX is very easy to mix. Simply add the toners listing in
the colour formulation, then reduce with 10% AWX deionised
water or till 20% with Slow Reducer for warm temperatures.
Does AWX require special application equipment?
Minor modification will need to be made to provide optimum
performance. Since AWX performs similar to a solvent borne
system, it requires the lowest capital equipment cost of all
systems.
Is AWX difficult to apply?
Application of AWX is very simple; it provides better hiding,
cleaner formulations for colour match, and easy and consistent
blending properties.
Is AWX healthier for my employees?
While waterborne technology is better for the environment and
reduces VOC emissions, AWX still contains solvents, pigments
and resins. We recommend proper personal protection
. equipment be used for any coating application.
Will I have to maintain separate solvent streams with
waterborne technology?
Yes – It is necessary to maintain separate waste streams,
however AWX reduces hazardous waste generation.
