As you know, green initiatives are becoming second nature to citizens across the globe, but also for local government and of course, companies like Sherwin-Williams. sustainability The terms "sustainable" or "green" are becoming widely used in newspapers, magazines, annual reports and advertisements and very often they are used with a similar meaning. What is sustainability? “Is sustainability the same as a green initiative?” It means “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” The principles of sustainability can stimulate technological innovation, advance competitiveness, preserve natural resources and improve our quality of life. Essentially, sustainability is about process and corporate culture - how a company chooses to operate. Sustainable practices are intended to last and have a positive influence on living resources. What is green? “Green” is the colour and the term that is commonly used for products and services created through sustainable practices. Reduce waste generation, energy consumption, water use are part of sustainable practices. Here are two examples of sustainable business practice: • SW Emulsion Plant, CEP - Chicago The facility uses a huge amount of water to clean equipment. By instituting a recycling program the facility prevents the discharge of contaminated waste water into the local sewer system while reducing the amount of water it uses. • HQ Warrensville Heights – Cleveland, Ohio, Automotive Plant – Richmond, Kentucky Both have established extremely effective and sustainable recycling programs. Employees have recycled 12.6 tons of materials in 2007 and are determined to double that amount in 2008. The Richmond site recycled more than 324 tons of nonhazardous waste. in brief Carmakers have an environmental commitment with a sustainability strategy focuses on increasing fuel efficiency, on reducing transportrelated conventional emissions, dismantling and recycling programs to reduce wastes, investing in paint application process to reduce the VOC emissions.
