PRINCE OF PEACE COMMUNICATIONS OBSERVATIONS REMINDERS AND NEWS
It is with pleasure that I announce the following appointments to the Senior Campus
commencing in 2013.
Jonathan Klupp Curriculum Leader Senior School Mathematics
Year 6 and 7 and future Canberra Trips
Most parents would be aware that one of the main reasons we spend time in Canberra
with our Year 7 cohort is the curriculum learning outcomes
surrounding democracy, government and the workings of Parliament. With the new
Australian Curriculum these learning outcomes are now positioned in Year 6. As a
consequence we will transition from Year 7‟s attending Canberra to Year 6 attending
Canberra as follows:
2013 2014 2015
Year 7 Year 6 and Year 7 Year 6
Year 6 teachers have begun the planning process for 2014 to ensure a smooth
transition and close linking to curriculum in the current learning outcomes as well as
exploring other possibilities.
Wanted! Friends of the Library
We are building a “Friends of the Library” group and are looking for
parents and grandparents that are keen to help out with Library based projects in
2013. These projects would include story-telling and helping create theme based
decorations for the Junior Campus Library, book clubs on both Campuses and helping
out with book packs at the Senior Campus. (and much more!)
If you want to find out more about how you could become involved then please
contact Sam Yarnold at syarnold@princeofpeace.qld.edu.au.
Buchholz Secondary Schooling Scholarships
The Buchholz Secondary Schooling Scholarships have been made available due to the
generosity of the late Lesley Valerie Buchholz who left the bulk of her estate to the
Lutheran Church of Australia Queensland District (LCAQD) to provide the opportunity
for as many students as possible to attend a Lutheran secondary school who would
otherwise be precluded from doing so due to financial hardship.
The scholarships are awarded for the length of the child‟s secondary
education up to a maximum of five years (Years 8-12) for those commencing in 2013-
4, or six years (Years 7-12) from 2015 onwards. It is on-going in nature; covering the
period of secondary schooling until he/she graduates, is withdrawn, or has their
enrolment cancelled.
It covers annual tuition fees, inclusive of compulsory school camps and levies, at a
level of between 25-100% depending on the capacity of the family to contribute to
their child‟s education, and on the Bequest funds available.
Applications for 2013 scholarships close on Friday 23 November, 2012
Initial further details regarding the application process, selection criteria and
application forms will be available on the College website later on Wednesday.
Cricket Australian “POP-stars”
POP students are stars. Earlier in the year our Year 4 students became “cricket stars”. Cricket
Australia put together a video promotion of the sport and our students were invited to star in the
promotional material. Cricket Australia are very happy with how the videos have come together
and thank each of the Prince of Peace children and the school for their willingness to participate.
If you would like to see the link for our Year 4 “Sporting Stars”, follow
Living Jesus, Leaving Heart-Prints.
Last week, our Year 6 Community and Worship Parliament Committee
took time out of their busy end of year schedules to not only give gifts
from our community to the cause of Operation
Christmas Child, but they also went to visit and assist in the
assembling and distribution of our boxes.
The Samaritan‟s Purse Warehouse, the organisation behind Operation
Christmas Child, brings together numerous volunteers busily working
to distribute thousands of boxes filled with joyful cheer for children
who otherwise would not receive a gift at Christmas time as we
celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ our saviour. The volunteers give so
humbly of their time, and our children were able to see first hand the
tireless efforts of so many to support a cause that will bring joy to
thousands of children in remote and underprivileged communities.
Samaritan‟s Purse has changed the lives of children through Operation
Christmas Child since 1993. Every year, generous people across the
world lovingly pack shoe boxes with gifts – simple, yet powerful
messages of God‟s unconditional love. I am proud our the efforts of the
Prince of Peace Community as we packed
319 Boxes!!!!!!!!
Remembrance Day Service Friday 9 November at 11.00am
On Friday we will be holding our usual community chapel service at
students will be leading the service and all members of the community
are welcome to pause and remember our servicemen and service women who have served our
country with courage, humility and honour. On this day, students will be guided in their understanding
of this special day of remembrance, and the importance of this day for all
Australians.
Teacher Staffing for 2013.
Over the past couple of weeks, our staffing for 2013 has been finalised. I look forward to
publishing this information for families in the next newsletter. Class lists are in the end stages of
finalisation. These will be distributed to families along with formal reports at the close of the school
year.
Special Dates coming up for families.
There are of course many special dates coming up for families. I highlight two dates here for our
Community Welfare Committee
yPoP? Is the question and we would like you to come up with the answer.
What does this mean? It means that we have a great school full of great children and adults and
we want to celebrate this. So our question to you is, why is POP a great school?
We would like you to answer this question as creatively as you can.
You might draw a poster of something that you think makes POP great
You might write a poem about something great that you have seen or that happened to you at
POP
You might create a sculpture, paint a picture, draw a cartoon strip
You might share a story of something that happened to you
The list of things you could do is endless.
So put your creative thinking caps on and answer our question ….. yPOP?
You can begin working on your answer now and hand it in to Ms Robinson or Mrs Williams by
9 November. Your work will be displayed for the last few weeks of the term so that everyone can
see what makes POP great.
If you have any questions about this fun activity please talk to one of the members of the Arts and
Culture Committee or Ms Robinson.
MotherJumpers: PoP mum jumps 14 000 feet for worthy cause
On November 25 Vanessa Hall will be one of many mums around Australia taking the plunge to
raise funds for the not-for-profit organisation Support for Mums.
Jumping at Bribie Island in front of family and friends, the mother of 3 and owner of local
business, Dolly Vardens, aims to raise $1 000 that will go towards supporting women suffering
circumstantial crisis such as perinatal depression, an unwell child or losing their husband.
“I am jumping because it's a cause that I feel strongly about. When I had my 3rd child, there were
many grey, gloomy days. I was in a rut and needed a lot of help to get back up to the happy and
vibrant person I usually was. I know there are many others who also face the same predicament
and would benefit from the services provided by the Support for Mums charity” said Vanessa. “I
don't think I would ordinarily consider jumping out of an aeroplane but the fact that it's for a
charity that I feel strongly about, made it an easy decision.”
The Support for Mums not-for-profit organisation was set up to provide mums and their families
with practical, short term assistance, and/or referral to families experiencing circumstantial crisis.
Support for mums provides assistance through the provision of babysitting, cleaning, child
minding and more.
Longest Lutheran Lunch
On Tuesday 6 November we celebrated the Longest Lutheran Lunch. It is a chance to help us
connect with our communities with a view to sharing the momentous news of God‟s grace.
Students came to school in free dress and some had crazy hats and fascinators. The teachers and
staff also made a big effort to wear something more glamorous for the day! Everyone sat down at
the long table set out in a single row to enjoy the lunch and company. All enjoyed a leisurely lunch
together. There was a buzz in the air as it was filled with laughter and relaxed conversation. It
gave us an opportunity to celebrate our historic roots.
Lions Youth of the Year
On Friday a representative from the Lions Club of Brisbane Inner North came along to speak to our
students about the benefits of this award. Students were encouraged to put themselves forward as
it would be a great opportunity for them to develop skills such as character building, developing
interview techniques and public speaking skills. The state winners will be able to participate in a
Lions International Youth Camp in New Zealand from December 2013-January 2014. Applications
forms are available from your local Lions Club or try visiting the website www.lionsclubs.org.au
Cricket Adventure
A few months ago, a number of Year 4 and 6 students were
invited to participate in a cricket coaching and filming session at
Allan Border Field, Albion. The fruits of that experience are finally available for viewing – please
visit http://in2cricket.com.au/clubs/instructional-videos to see our young stars. Apparently there is
also a „Milo in2cricket‟ app for „i‟ devices available through the App Store that shows some footage
of our children.
SPORT
Year 5/6 Girls Softball This week the girls demonstrated excellent sportsmanship during their
first game of softball for the season. They played against Albany Hills and were narrowly defeated.
All the girls kept trying even though it was a difficult task and should be commended for their
attitude. Of particular note were Charlotte Ellem and Mackenzie Bryson who demonstrated good
improvement throughout the game. Congratulations girls for another excellent effort.
Year 5 Boys Touch A win and 3 narrow losses was the return for the Year 5 Boys after the latest
round of touch games. Improvements in defence saw very few opportunities given to the
opposition teams and our scheming and probing attacks caused mayhem (once that mayhem is
caused to the opposition teams, we will be unstoppable!). Best players for the day were Deon
Smith, Hamish Munt, Cooper Schmidt and Patrick Bunn.
Year 6 Boys Touch All boys have been playing extremely well over the past few weeks and this
week was no exception. This week the boys faced off with Aspley A (a win for POP 1-0) and
Everton Park where we went down 4-1. There were some significant „break aways‟ in both
games. Isaac Cooper and Tim Poole were named best players for this week.
Last week our 2 games finished in a comfortable win and a draw. Best players were Noah Smith
and Tom Goopy. Keep up the great team work boys!
Year 5/6 Beach Newcomb/Volleyball The Year 5/6 mixed volleyball players showed excellent
sportsmanship this week. There were many students encouraging each other and sharing the ball
with teammates as they played Newcomb. Despite the windy conditions, the teams worked hard
at catching and passing the ball.
This week when the POP teams played each other, a new dimension to the game was added.
Players were asked to include a volleyball set or dig in the sequence of play to build on their
volleyball skills. Well done to all - our best players this week: Ella McLean, Rebecca Pfeiffer and
Sasha Tobin.
Year 7 Girls Softball
POP 1 vs Craigslea Lost 6 – 12. All girls played well, especially Michelle Graham who pitched for
the first time and took a fantastic catch.
POP 2 vs McDowall Lost 6 – 10. Again, all girls played well especially Shakira Brunjes who took two
great catches.
Year 5/6 Cricket Last Friday the Year 5 Cricket Team had a successful match against Eaton‟s Hill,
narrowly winning. The Year 6 Cricket Team were beaten by a small margin against a strong team
from Everton Park. Both teams played well and are starting to develop the skills required to play
cricket. Skills such as catching, stumping and batting are improving with each match played. Well
done to both teams on their good sportsmanship over the last few weeks.
Netball Report POP 4 BNA Competition.
POP 4 got off to a slow start for the season. Our first game was forfeited as 80% of our team was
in Canberra. Game 2, we only had 6 players. Fortunately, Nakita from POP5 was able to assist
Shakira at the goal shooting end. Olivia earned player of the match with her excellent defence &
intercepts but we lost 7-12. Game 3 was a bye. Game 4 we had 7 players, however our regular
shooters were away so 3 new shooters had to be found at training on Monday. Eve, Phoebe &
Caitlin shared the shooting duties. All the girls played extremely well. Ella, Sarah, Amy & Lauren
showed some great defence & intercepted the opposition passes with ease. Caitlin was player of
the match for her full court play & shooting efforts. The team effort brought our first win 12-7.
INDOOR NETBALL Congratulations to the Prince of Peace initiated Indoor Netball team who won
their division at Brisbane City Indoor Sports last Monday Night. Going into the finals third on the
ladder and underdogs against the top team, the “Popstars” won 41-26 in a very clean and
structured display. Congratulations to the following team members:
Weekly Devotion
God is sheer being itself-Spirit. Those who worship him must do it out
of their very being, their spirits, their true selves, in adoration. John 4:24 (The Message)
Where do you find God? When we think of God as a being “out there” who we can petition and ask
to intervene in our lives when needed, God can most of the time be relegated to an optional extra
mostly irrelevant to our real day to day lives. At the same time we continue to be haunted by the
sense that there must be more than this- that our life should be part of something bigger and far
more adventurous.
What would it mean if God were close? What in fact if life was made up of the very stuff of God,
that there was a bigger story, a greater song happening all the time that is written on our hearts
and connecting each one of us and all of creation? Acts of compassion, moments of love and the
breaking through of mercy, peace and forgiveness would then come to seem part of the true life
and light that is in the world- a moment when the world stops spreading its own news and
remembers the greatest story of all.
The Book of Deuteronomy (30:14) tells us that “the word is very near to you; it is in your mouth
and your heart...” When we really hear this, the idea of asking God to intervene suddenly from the
outside is rather silly. God is already working, so very close, telling a story that is bigger than time
and more beautiful than anything we could imagine on our own. Instead of sending up the
occasional plea for direction, we need to be working out where the great adventure is already
going on and stop messing around with trying to write little sub-plots of our own. Or, to use a
different metaphor, we need to stop trying to swim in puddles and take a dive into the ocean.
It is only when we can tune in to the great story of the universe, one that continues to tell of love,
reconciliation and forgiveness, that we begin to discover life in its fullest. We become our true
selves in worship of the one who is “sheer being itself” and in cooperation with the Spirit that
continues to create all life in loving relationship.
May you find yourself part of God‟s big adventure.
