Kema Test of Power Transformer
April 2006

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE SPEECH OF
MD AT ANNUAL CONFERENCE
l Our sign at the
Karachi airport
says “Siemens
number one in
Pakistan”. This now
has the seal of
approval of Karachi
stock exchange
l As we stand at
the top we must be
happy but also extremely cautious because
as you know the higher you are the harder
you can fall.
l We must give new meaning to success
and not sit back and relax on our present
achievements
l No one will give you a medal for the
most articulate explanation of your failure
but you will be recognized if you can present
success and find solutions that lead you to
the top.
l Evaluate yourselves, find your mistakes
and address them and encourage a
culture of critical analysis around you so
even your subordinates can tell you your
weaknesses
l One thing everyone has to understand
that there is a lot of difference between
empowerment and complete freedom
l A good manager always weighs a
decision carefully because he or she
knows that every time a decision is over
turned it undermines credibility and erodes
the confidence of higher management
l We have to comply with all laws and
it should be proactive not reactive.
l We have fit4more principles and
that lead us to the recipe for profit and
growth. I want you to follow this recipe
and aim for sustainable growth
l An important tool for sustainable growth
is cross selling. Now that you are
concentrating on this you can see the fruits
that it can bring to your basket. This is just
the tip of the ice berg
l We must all understand that though
we might be in different businesses we
are one Siemens just like the human body
that has different parts doing different
things like smelling, hearing, eating and
seeing but every different part serves one
body just as different business units serve
one Siemens
l We need to be lean and mean in order
to get ahead, we need to cut costs,
streamline processes and be able to face
competition that gets tougher by the day.
l It is crucial that we do not ignore merit
when hiring and do not favor anyone that
we find below our standards. A wrong
addition to your team done in haste or for
some other consideration can become a
lifelong liability that can shackle your
progress.
l I know that you are all very busy but a
little time taken out to give feedback to
HR can help the company identify areas
that need attention and benefit all of us
in the long run
l Quality, customer satisfaction, value
addition and skill enhancement are other
areas which require our attention and are
vital to the growth of the company.
l Safety at the workplace is another
important element that we should not
forget. We should ensure that safety
standards are followed because if there
are accidents we are not only paying the
medical costs but also costs related to
work loss
l We must also ensure that we keep
the environment clean so that it does not
pose a hazard to our neighbors. Siemens
is a very responsible company and we
are dedicated to preserving the
environment.
SIEMENS ADDS US$ 0.5 MILLION
TO EARTHQUAKE RELIEF EFFORTS
Siemens A.G.the main share holder in Siemens Pakistan,
has donated their entire share of the interim dividend of Rs.26,
857,872 (Approx US$ 0.5 Million) for earth quake victims of
Pakistan. This amount will be used for the “Light for Life”
program planned by Siemens to provide power to the affected
areas and will be in addition to the Rs.5.5 Million rupees already
generated by employees of regional Siemens companies and
matched equally by their management. Siemens since the very
first day of this calamity has been extremely active in providing
help both in cash and kind for the relief of earthquake victims
and total donations in cash and kind are now close to US$ 2
million
In first hours of this tragedy Siemens worked around the clock
to restore communication lines with the affected areas on
voluntary basis with its dedicated workers even endangering
their lives by staying on top of communication towers when the
area was receiving severe after shocks. Siemens employees
in Islamabad including top management also volunteered
services at local medical centers to look after the affected
people.
Siemens India also made a major contribution by donation of
medical equipment worth Euro 80,000 ( Rs.576,000) thus
demonstrating the developing brotherly ties between the two
countries. This was in addition to medical equipment worth
US$ 322,000 donated by Siemens Medical Solution Germany.
The Medical Equipment and four Diesel Generating sets with
engines donated by Volvo were presented to the Relief
Commissioner in Islamabad in December.
“FIT4MORE POWERED BY ”
INAUGURAL SESSION PROCEEDINGS
The theme of the Annual Conference this year was " Fit4more
Powered by " and the logo depicted a wind mill powered
Fit4more. The wings of the windmill carried the attributes of
the Fit4more program. This was visualization of this concept
at it's best and the delegates were motivated by the sight of
the logo being unveiled by the MD. A button was pushed and
amidst the sound of music and lights the logo appeared magically
shrouded in a cloud of smoke. Flashing lights on the smoke
created a spell of their own and the windmill started to turn
slowly as the logo came out of the haze getting the conference
off to a flying start.
During the tea break a cake shaped like the logo was placed
at the centre table to be cut by the MD and the executive
directors. Amidst thunderous applause the cake was cut and
distributed and as the delegates each got a piece of the cake
their resolve to instill in their lives this concept was doubled.
As usual the delegates at this conference were provided with
color coded badges to help them find their workshops and
MD & CEO Mr.Sohail Wajahat H. Siddiqui and Executive Directors
Mr.Gerhard Wilcke, Mr.Mohammad Ilyas, Mr.Nasim Siddiqui and
Mr.Parvez Iftikhar cutting the cake at the Annual Conference
timings and this was accomplished smoothly. During the entire
conference the registration desk staffed by volunteers from
CSG and CC helped the delegates and demonstrated the value
of team work.
THE CONFERENCE ENDED WITH THE
FOLLOWING REMARKS BY THE MD
First of all I would like to congratulate the organisers for
holding a very successful conference which was very well
arranged. We seem to be improving each year. Tears nearly
came to my eyes when I saw the presentations today as
finally we are all speaking with one voice and our focus is the
same. We should remember what we have learned over here
and not forget it as we go back to work. I want CC to put all
the material on our internet web site so everyone can have
access to this material and learn from it.
Over the years this conference has assumed great importance
and the deliberations we hold here should be restricted to
the top performers in the company so I have instructed CC
and HR to ensure that attending this conference is a privilege
and not a right. Only if you perform well will you be invited to
this conference next year. If you do not get invited you will
know that you have not measured up to the standards but do
not loose heart because you can always bounce back and
join us again next year.
Once again I thank the organisers for organizing such a good
conference and wish you and your family members best of
success, health and happiness in 2006. See you next year.

HIPATH BIZIP EARNS THE “BEST OF
CEBIT AWARD” FOR SIEMENS
At this year's CeBIT, HiPath BizIP earned Siemens the “Best
of CeBIT Award” presented by the trade magazine TeleTalk.
HiPath BizIP is a telephone system that doesn't require a
switchboard. The HiPath BizIP telephones are directly
connected to one another and communicate much like
participants in an Internet file-sharing service (peer-to-peer,
P2P), where computers exchange data without detours through
a central server. Designed for up to 16 telephones, the solution
is intended primarily for small companies and will make costly
installations and maintenance work on telephone systems a
thing of the past.
The developers at Siemens shifted the switchboard function
to the telephones
themselves. Users simply
connect BizIP-410 model
phones to an existing
network. The phones
recognize one another via
the integrated peer-to-peer
protocols and automatically
configure themselves. New
telephones connected to
the network will send an
electronic notice to the
other phones. Finally, each
telephone receives the next
free internal telephone numbers. The configuration data is
stored on the telephones. The P2P protocol requires only 400
kilobytes of memory. If
one telephone fails, the data that was stored on it is provided
by other phones, which makes the system very reliable.
The telephones offer the usual functions, including threeline
conferencing, call forwarding and call hold. Users
can also place calls with voice-over-IP. An Access Device
from Siemens connects the existing company network
with the Internet, making it possible to download updates
onto the individual phones. This small box called BizIP
AD 20 provides an Ethernet connection for broadband
Internet access. In addition to a VoIP-compatible router
that gives all phones access to a VoIP provider, the BizIP
Access Device also features two ISDN ports, allowing
users to place and receive calls via a conventional fixedline
network. Analog devices also can be hooked up to
the system: Two ports are available for connecting a fax
machine or a door intercom.
PTD PAKISTAN INCLUDED IN LIST FOR
IMPLEMENTATION OF MI@PTD
In a dynamic and rapidly growing PTD market worldwide, steady
and systematic monitoring of the market and the competition
is essential. The success here depends on the ability to
understand the customers and market better.
In the battle for
customers and
market share for
profitable growth of
business, market
intelligence is always
an indispensable,
critical factor for
success. In order to
implement a uniform
and systematic
approach of
observing and
reporting key market
data, MI@PTD
initiative has been
introduced by PTD
Division of Siemens
Germany. This helps to gain a 360-degree view of the market
and a uniform platform for collecting and reporting data from
all the regions/countries.
PTD Pakistan is also included in the list of countries selected
for implementation of MI@PTD in the first phase. Mr. Ishtiaqul
Haque (BU TR) & Mr. Munis Siddiqui (BU SB) have been
nominated as MI Co-ordinator and MI-Multiplier respectively,
for implementation of MI@PTD initiative in Pakistan. Training
sessions have been conducted by them for PTD colleagues
and MI@PTD in Pakistan is on its way with a successful
completion of first phase of online data filling process.
Dear Readers
Here is another issue of Siemens Ki Dunya.
I can say that it is a bumper issue because
it carries reports on some major events like
the Annual Conference and the family day
in Islamabad. In both the events team spirit
was the reason for success. Talking of
success our team work as far as Siemens
Ki Dunya is concerned has been recognized and the National
Council of Culture and Arts has selected this newsletter as
the second best News Letter of it’s kind in the country. The
council has been holding this competition for last 35 years
and the jury consists of eminent figures from the field of Art
and Culture. We still have to strive for the number one position
but it is a matter of satisfaction that within a few years we
have been able to attract such recognition. Let me leave you
with a quote
“ Teamwork is the ability to work
together toward a common vision.
It is the fuel that allows
common people to
attain uncommon results. “
DRIVE FEEDS EXCESS
ENERGY BACK INTO
THE POWER GRID
At the Hanover Trade Fair, Siemens
introduced two systems for frequency
converters that transform the surplus
kinetic energy of an electric motor back
i n t o
electricity
and feed it
back into the
power grid.
The greatest
potential for
energy recovery of this sort lies in
motors that set large flywheel masses
in motion and rapidly decelerate again.
A so called frequency converter makes
the revolution speed of the motor
variable. Currently, the motor used for
braking is usually put in generator
mode. But the energy obtained during
this process is conducted into a large
resistor, which heats up and must then
be actively cooled as well. In elevators,
for example, around 30 percent of the
energy ends up unused this way. With
the new drives capable of recovering
power, practically no energy is lost.
And with energy prices rising, the higher
investment costs are repaid after only
a short time.

The silver Jubilees of our Managing
Director Mr.Sohail Wajahat Siddiqui
and Chief financial Officer Mr.Gerhard
Wilcke were celebrated together with
the get together dinner prior to the
Annual Conference in the last week of
January. The venue for the occasion
was carefully selected as the theme
dinner for the evening was based on
the theme “ FLYING HIGH”. The local
PAF (Pakistan Air Force) Museum was
a befitting place to host not only the
dinner but the Silver Jubilees of these
two gentlemen because as the compeer
of the evening said “They are the
Squadron Leaders of the High Flying
Siemens team”.
The theme was carefully planned and
meticulously carried out by CC. All
delegates were provided with the scarf
and cap that was the hall mark of
second world war pilots and it rekindled
the bravery and valor of those times.
Banners with apt visuals and the slogan
“ Flying High” lined both sides of the
beautifully decorated tent pitched in the
backdrop of a rockery that retained the
attention of the guests throughout the
program. Right in front of the rockery
was the beautiful stage that had
complementing backdrops for the two
silver jubilees and a musical band that
provided alluring music through the
evening.
A limousine was specially arranged to
bring the two silver Jubilee celebrants
to the venue from office and they arrived
in style to the clapping of guests and
were profusely garlanded upon their
arrival. Led to the head table the
proceedings started with their
colleagues expressing their experiences
with the two. Amongst those who spoke
on the occasion were Mr.Mohammad
Ilyas, Mr.Rahim Dawood, Mr.Amin
Bandhani, Mr.Samiullah Siddiqui, Major
A.A.Zuberi, Mr.Nasim Siddiqui,
Mr.Parvez Iftikhar, Ms.Sowaba Imran,
Mr.Ali Sher Naqvi and Mr.Irfan Umar.
Siemens Home appliances had
prepared special statuettes inscribed
with the qualities of MD and CFO and
these were presented to the two by
Ms.Sowaba Imran. The beautiful
felicitation cards received from all over
the region were presented by
Mr.Mansoor Farooqui in specially
designed silver boxes together with the
regular documents from HR pertaining
to the silver jubilees. A very unique gift
received from Siemens India for the
MD was presented by Mr.Nadeem
Kazmi to Mr.Sohail Wajahat while a
beautiful book received from Siemens
Singapore was handed over to
Mr.Wilcke by Mr.Mohammad Rafi. One
of the highlights of the evenings was
the video message received from
our former CFO and Present Chief
Executive of Siemens Philippines Mr.
Tertius Vermeulen which was warmly
greeted by the guests. The speech by
Dr.Klaus Wucherer given earlier in a
ceremony in Germany was read out by
Zia Zuberi.
Gerhard Wilcke has preferred to see a
bit more of the world – at Siemens
expense, of course. He started out in
Germany and served in various
functions. Then two years in England,
followed by some five years of
wonderful holidays in Australia. We
brought him back to the cold reality of
Germany – and finally rewarded him
with Siemens Pakistan.
Everyone says he is the perfect partner
for Sohail: With a fine eye for tactics,
When I met him the first
time I had the feeling
that he was the right
person for the company
because he was very
straightforward and
articulate. He brought a
lot of discipline to the
financial area of
Siemens. He is first,
different and
courageous. For me he
is a blessing from God.
Mr.Sohail Wajahat H. Siddiqui.
Everybody knows that
the speed of light is the
fastest in the world but
since Mr.Wilcke came
to Pakistan I found that
Mr.Wilcke can use MS
Outlook faster than the
speed of light. He
makes the best use of
this.
Mr.Rahim Dawood
A three tier cake with sculptured
flowers greeted the silver jubilee
gentlemen at the end of formal
speeches and this was cut by both
amidst thunderous applause. This
was followed by a sumptuous dinner
that everyone thoroughly enjoyed.
SOME CHOICE REMARKS AT THE
SILVER JUBILEE FUNCTION OF MD & CFO
REMARKS ABOUT CFO
a solid background on the commercial
side, and a quiet approach that nicely
balances the – shall we say impulsive?
– style of his CEO. The rumors are that
nothing – absolutely nothing – will rattle
him. Even the occasional bomb in
Karachi.
Dr. Klaus Wucherer
Member of the Corporate Executive
Committee
Siemens AG
At Anniversary Dinner in Germany
Buddha said "Do not believe in anything
simply because you have heard it. Do
not believe in anything simply because
it is spoken and rumored by many. Do
not believe in anything simply because
it is found written in your religious books.
Do not believe in anything merely on the
authority of your teachers and elders.
Do not believe in traditions because they
have been handed down for many
generations. But after observation and
analysis, when you find that anything
agrees
Perseverance is
one of the qualities
of Mr.Wilcke.
Failure happens
when one quits
and Mr.Wilcke
never quits.
Mr. Samiullah Siddiqui
Mr.Sohail Wajahat Siddiqui and Mr.Gerhard Wilcke cut the beautiful three tiered silver jubilee cake
7 8
The delegates intensely motivated
and thoroughly inspired left the
venue to prepare for the coming two
days annual conference and praised
the efforts of the organisers for
providing such a well managed
event.
He has a very special
and calculated sense
of humor, his humor is
also business
targeted. His
messages have
double meaning.
Sense of humor and
also message for
positive action. He is
targeted like a stinger
missile.
Mr. Amin Bandhani
with reason and is
conducive to the good
and benefit of one and
all, then accept it and
live up to it." This is
also knowingly or
unknowingly the way
Mr. Wilcke follows. He
has very good analysis
qualities and a good
sense of humor.
Mr.Mohammad Ilyas
I have learned a
lot from Mr.Wilcke
and always find
him ready to help
and guide.
Major (Retd)
A.A.Zuberi

Sohail Siddiqui started out at Siemens
Pakistan, and had two stays in Germany
and a break in England for studies. Over
the years, he worked up the classic career
ladder – from trainee engineer to
Managing Director.
He is deeply committed and engaged –
and seems to work day and night on
behalf of our customers. Those who know
him appreciate his unconventional
thinking and his directness – all packed
in a great sense of humor. And he is not
only a very successful manager – but is
greatly respected by the political and
business communities. What better
I am personally very
happy about the
professional
relationship between
us. The MD looks after
the airplanes and I
look after the
parachutes. I am quite
happy that he looks
after the airplanes
because sometimes
there is a thick cloud and he easily
goes through so we can see the sun.
This is one ability not many people
have.
Mr.Gerhard Wilcke
Sohail joined Siemens 25 years ago
and I am sure that the first day he set
foot in the company he must have
determined his purpose for being
there. I can see him saying to himself
" I am going to be the Managing
Director of this company some day.
This is how purposeful he is and how
he loves to plan his career. Many of
his colleagues might have had doubts
that he would make it to the top but I
combination can there be?
Dr. Klaus Wucherer
Member of the Corporate Executive
Committee
Siemens AG
At Anniversary Dinner in Germany
Eisenhower had said
“Leadership is the art
of getting someone
else to do something
you want done
because he wants to
do it." This kind of
leadership requires
smart work not hard
work and as long as I
have known Mr.Sohail
Wajahat he has always worked smartly
and also advised all of us to do the
same.
Mr.Irfan Umar
Mr. Abid Hussain
Under your leadership Siemens Pakistan
have given to the company and the plans
we made have borne fruitation.
Mr.Tertius Vermeulen (Former CFO SP,
I am sure there was
never any doubt in his
mind that he will achieve
it.
Mr.Nasim Siddiqui
Major(retd) A.A. Zuberi speaking at silver jubilee
of Mr.Abid Hussain
Ever since he has
taken over the
going towards the top
and it is not a
coincidence that in
the latest lit of top 25
companies in his 25 th
Year we are on the top
Mr.Parvez Iftikhar
Mr.Sohail Wajahat is a
role model for all of us
and by his rise to the top
he has proved that in
Siemens anyone that
performs will get their
due reward . His
presence in the
company should be a
great source of
motivation for the young
that have just joined the
company because they can see the
heights to which they can rise if they work
with conviction.
Mr.Ali Sher Naqvi
He epitomizes
boundlessness. He has
such a dynamic
diversified yet complete
personality with
appealing and inspiring
aspects to it. The
sculpture that we have
highlights a few of his
wonderful attributes.
FULL TEXT OF SPEECH OF MD AT ANNUAL CONFERENCE
Dear Colleagues
Our sign at the Karachi airport says
“Siemens number one in Pakistan”. This
now has the seal of approval of Karachi
stock exchange. We are now number
one in the top 25 companies of the
exchange. My congratulations to you on
this achievement and on the historic
results that led to this position.
As you know it has been a long and hard
journey that has brought us to this
position. As we stand at the top we must
be happy but also extremely cautious
because as you know the higher you are
the harder you can fall. We must
understand that we have surmounted a
peek but not conquered the mountain.
We must now set our eyes higher so that
in the long run we are in the position to
set benchmarks even for institutions that
evaluate us. We must give new meaning
to success and not sit back and relax on
our present achievements. Many
successful organisations have been
destroyed because they thought they
had reached the top and nobody could
even come near them. This is the greatest
folly one can commit and I cannot
emphasise enough the importance of
doubling our efforts if we want to keep
this place and go even higher. Mr.Colin
Powell the former American Secretary
of state gave a very simple formula for
success. He said” There are no secrets
to success. It is the result of preparation,
hard work, and learning from failure”.
So how do you prepare for success ?
The most important thing for achieving
success is making maximum use of your
time. You cannot succeed if you waste
time in unnecessary discussions and in
trying to explain why something has not
been done. I am amazed at the energy
and time wasted in trying to explain failure
rather than to find avenues for success.
No one will give you a medal for the most
articulate explanation of your failure but
you will be recognized if you can present
success and find solutions that lead you
to the top.
Many failures also arise out of the yes
culture. Another American the famous
actor Bill Cosby said “I don't know the
key to success, but the key to failure is
trying to please everybody “. In business
we cannot have a “you pat my back and
I will pat yours” approach. Weaknesses
have to be addressed and they can only
be addressed if you can pin point them
and they can only be pin pointed if we
stop playing this “Everything is perfect“
game. Nothing in the world is perfect and
there is always room for improvement.
Evaluate yourselves, find your mistakes
and address them and encourage a
culture of critical analysis around you so
even your subordinates can tell you your
weaknesses. Everyday I try to find a
weakness because if I can find it than I
can resolve it and if I resolve it I will
become stronger and will be able to reach
higher.
As you know we have changed the
culture of the company and empowered
you so you can take decisions based on
merit and thus have the tool to face this
highly competitive world. One thing
everyone has to understand that there
is a lot of difference between
empowerment and complete freedom. A
few instances have come to my notice
where people made decisions that were
just not logical or in the best interest of
the company and they were than not
happy that higher management
overturned their decisions. Empowerment
is to test your power of decision making
but if it is found that you are behaving
like the little child who wants to touch
boiling hot milk you have to be restrained
and you must evaluate why it was done.
A good manager always weighs a
decision carefully because he or she
knows that every time a decision is over
turned it undermines credibility and
erodes the confidence of higher
management. If all decisions
are accepted the Manager gains the
confidence of top management who
realize that he or she has the ability to
work without need for monitoring or
supervision. That is the ladder that takes
you to the top.
As we grow bigger more eyes are on us.
Siemens name now has real meaning in
Pakistan and everyone is sitting up and
taking notice of our rapid progress. Our
takeover of CTI and our contract with
KESC have put us in the eyes of the
public and we have to be very cautious
confidence of top management who
realize that he or she has the ability to
work without need for monitoring or
supervision. That is the ladder that takes
you to the top.
As we grow bigger more eyes are on us.
Siemens name now has real meaning in
Pakistan and everyone is sitting up and
taking notice of our rapid progress. Our
takeover of CTI and our contract with
KESC have put us in the eyes of the
public and we have to be very cautious
in how we behave both internally and
externally. Compliance is a very important
aspect of our behavior. We have to
comply with all laws and it should be
proactive not reactive. We should not
wait for the compliance officer to lift a
finger at us before we fall in line. I hope
the day will come when the compliance
officer cannot find a single violation and
that too without his prodding. We also
need to work together as a team. The
compliance officer is part of the team not
outside it so he should play the role of a
mentor a person who guides and softly
nudges all of us towards correct actions
that produce exemplary compliance
conditions.
You are very
fortunate to work with
Siemens. It is a
company that
provides you with all
the tools necessary
for success. All you
have to do is to use
the tools and you can
climb the highest
peek. We have
fit4more principles
and top+ that leads
us to the recipe for
profit and growth. I
want you to follow
this recipe and aim
for sustainable
growth. Many
companies grow but
It is a company that
provides you with all the
tools necessary for
success. All you have to
do is to use the tools
and you can climb the
highest peek. We have
fit4more principles and
top+ that leads us to the
recipe for profit and
growth. I want you to
follow this recipe and
aim for
sustainable growth.
like a balloon being filled with hot air that
bursts eventually. We have to be different
and we have to ensure sustainable
growth so that every year we achieve a
landmark and never have to look back
in our march forward to growth and
prosperity. An important tool for
sustainable growth is cross selling. Now
that you are concentrating on this you
can see the fruits that it can bring to your
basket. This is just the tip of the ice berg.
A well organized cross selling effort can
establish every one on solid lines. To
encourage such efforts we are giving out
an award this year for the best cross
selling efforts. We are one Siemens family
and we must work together as one
helping each other by identifying
synergies that will push our successes
in the future.
This is where key account managers can
play a vital role. As we all know the key
account managers are our ears and eyes
as far as customers with different
requirements are concerned. The key
account manager must maintain constant
and good contact with the customer and
as soon as there is need for products
and services that he or she knows the
customers desires and Siemens can
provide he should immediately put
forward an integrated solution based on
Siemens Synergies and also alert the
concerned business unit . We must all
understand that though we might be in
different businesses we are one Siemens
just like the human body that has different
parts doing different things like smelling,
hearing, eating and seeing but every
different part serves one body just as
different business units serve one
Siemens.
As we stand at the top we need to survey
the scenario. As our doors open up and
international competition comes knocking
we must be prepared because only the
best will survive in the coming days and
years. We need to be lean and mean in
order to get ahead, we need to cut costs,
streamline processes and be able to face
competition that gets tougher by the day.
It will not be done by just thinking about
it but by taking steps today to safeguard
our tomorrow. We need to maintain and
develop human excellence because
Human excellence can provide you the
advantage that nothing else can. Siemens
offers a host of opportunities for you to
train educate and uplift the human
resources you command. You must take
advantage and not only hire the best but
provide the best learning opportunities
to those you hire. It is crucial that we do
not ignore merit when hiring and do not
favor anyone that we find below our
standards. A wrong addition to your team
done in haste or for some other
consideration can become a lifelong
liability that can shackle your progress.
Human resources is an important
partner in our quest for people
excellence and I want you to give them
timely feedback so they can serve you
better. I know that you are all very busy
but a little time taken out to give
feedback to HR can help the company
identify areas that need attention and
benefit all of us in the long run. HR can
help you utilize the right person for the
right job which is so important if we
want to grow and not stagnate. If we
do not have the right person for the
right job we would be wasting precious
human resource. Quality, customer
satisfaction, value addition and skill
enhancement are others areas which
require our attention and are vital to
the growth of the company. Safety at
the workplace is another important
15 16
“
“
element that we should not forget. We
should ensure that safety standards
are followed because if there are
accidents we are not only paying the
medical costs but also costs related to
work loss. We must also ensure that
we keep the environment clean so that
it does not pose a hazard to our
neighbors. Siemens is a very
responsible company and we are
dedicated to preserving the
environment.
I have seen the flyers sent by the
medical centre and there is also
information in SKD relating to
prevention of various diseases.
Recently we have had the Hepatitis B
vaccination made available to
employees because we believe
prevention is better than cure. We
should continue our efforts and enhance
them in the coming days so we can all
remain healthy and enjoy a good quality
of life
In the end I want to say that the time
has come for you to take control of your
destiny. Over the last few years we
have gathered for the annual
conference and
each year has
been better
than the last.
We have to
continue to
meet to consult
and to have a
frank and
h o n e s t
evaluation of
our processes
and efforts.
This is the time
of the year to
strengthen our
resolve and
indulge in a
f r a n k
assessment of
our efforts so
we can find our weakness and by
addressing them come back next year
much stronger and on a higher peek of
the mountain of success. When will we
conquer the mountain? Not in our life
time because success breeds success
and when you get to the top of one
peek you find another more challenging
and as human nature dictates we forget
the one we have climbed and set our
eyes on the next that stands above us.
I wish you a very happy new year and
every success, health and happiness
to you and your family.

CELL ON WHEELS
(15m Self-Guyed Cell on Wheels)
COM MN in Pakistan have designed and
developed a local solution for COW’s (Cell on
Wheels). This is a mobile solution which not
only helps in providing temporary cellular
imported
solution. The
2 nd unique
feature is the
COW for
outdoor
equipment
which is the
first of its kind
in Pakistan,
again reducing
cost of the unit.
This is
expected to
coverage for cellular
operators but also
helps in quick
deployment. Due to
local design and
fabrication the
pricing is the most
attractive part, which
is approx half as
compared to the
Transformer passes KEMA Test it is already a great
achievement. Therefore getting 40 MVA, 132 kV Power
Transformer passed is the greatest achievement of
Design, Production and Quality people”. He said that
inspite of the way this transformer was exposed to tough
sea conditions and other hazards it is a testament to
ACQUISITION OF CTI
BY SIEMENS PAKISTAN
Siemens Pakistan acquired 53%
Shareholding of PTCL in Carrier
Telephone Industries (Private)
Limited (CTI) through privatization
policy of Government of Pakistan on
8th November, 2005. Accordingly
the Managerial Control has been
transferred to Siemens Pakistan
Engineering Co. Ltd on 9th
December, 2005.
CTI was established in 1969, as a joint
venture between Pakistan
Telecommunication Company Limited
(the then T&T Department) and
Siemens AG with the following
shareholding:-
a) 53% Ordinary Shares held by the
T&T Department.
b) 47% Cumulative Preference
Shares held by Siemens AG,
Germany.
The Company is engaged in
manufacture of long distance telecom
equipment i.e. carrier multiplex
equipment, digital system along with
analog system and computer
equipment.
The acquisition of CTI is a major
milestone achieved by Siemens in
Pakistan, ensuring a stronger base in
Pakistan and also aligned with our
motto of “Global Resources with Local
Presence”.
CTI also holds a wholly owned
subsidiary, Informage Softwares
(Private) Limited. This company
provides software solutions in the
market. This is under the process of
merger with CTI and hopefully the
merger will be completed by the end
of 2006.
To run the business operation and
align the business process of CTI in
accordance with Siemens policies and
guidelines, the management
appointed Mr. Syed Asadullah as MD
and Mr. Tahir Javed as CFO of the
Company. The two report to the Board
of directors consisting of Mr. Parvez
Iftikhar (Chairman), Mr. Gerhard
Wilcke, Mr. Uebach and Mr.
Thalhammer. This is a temporary
arrangement and will continue till
complete merger of CTI in Siemens
– expected in the first half of 2007.
All the offices of Siemens Pakistan in
Islamabad are also being moved to
CTI premises under a phased program.
HOW ABOUT COFFEE !
The story goes that an Arab named Khalid
was tending his goats in the Kaffa region
of southern Ethiopia, when he noticed his
animals became livelier after eating a
certain berry. He boiled the berries to make
the first coffee. Certainly the first record of
the drink is of beans exported from Ethiopia
to Yemen where Sufis drank it to stay
awake all night to pray on special
occasions. By the late 15th century it had
arrived in Mecca and Turkey from where
it made its way to Venice in 1645. It was
brought to England in 1650 by a Turk
named Pasqua Rosee who opened the
first coffee house in Lombard Street in the
City of London. The Arabic qahwa became
the Turkish kahve then the Italian caff? and
then English coffee.
LIKE TAKING PICTURES ?
The ancient Greeks thought our eyes
emitted rays, like a laser, which enabled
us to see. The first person to realise that
light enters the eye,
rather than leaving it,
was the 10th-century
mathematician,
astronomer and
physicist Ibn al-
Haitham. He invented
the first pin-hole
camera after noticing
the way light came
through a hole in window shutters. The
smaller the hole, the better the picture, he
Mr. Naveed I Ansari of Central Audit and the BU TD DEWA Project Team.
worked out, and set up the first Camera
Obscura (from the Arab word qamara for
a dark or private room). He is also credited
with being the first man to shift physics
from a philosophical activity to an
experimental one.
WHAT IS A BATH WITHOUT
SOAP AND SHAMPOO
The ancient Egyptians had soap of a kind,
as did the Romans who used it more as a
pomade. But it was the Arabs who
combined vegetable oils with sodium
hydroxide and aromatics such as thyme
oil. Shampoo was introduced to England
by an immigrant who opened Mahomed's
Indian Vapour Baths on Brighton seafront
in 1759 and was appointed Shampooing
Surgeon to Kings George IV and William
IV.
provide sufficient access & minimize
customer wait time. Our Call Centre
provides multiple ways for customers to
interact with the call agents; customers
can make a direct call or can send e-mail
messages, while the agents can call back
the customers or send a reply by e-mail
regarding the customer query / problem.
From out of a stormy night emerged
a surprisingly pleasant day to provide
Siemens families in Islamabad with
a memorable family day. The night
before it was so windy and gusty that
tents were uprooted and droplets of
rain threatened to turn into a
torrential downpour. Nature was very
kind that the scenario changed
completely in the morning with bright
sunshine playing hide and seek with
dark clouds and thus providing a blow
local delicacies were thoroughly
(RAILWAY SIGNALING) VISITS PAKISTAN
Mr.Jean Neufeldt in transformer factory
Mr.Kazi Fahim presents a memento to Mr.Jean Neufeldt
CHANGING STRATEGY
One day, there was a blind man
sitting on the steps of a building
with a hat by his feet and a sign
that read: "I am blind, please
help."
A creative publicist was walking
by and stopped to observe. He
saw that the blind man had only
a few coins in his hat. He dropped
in more coins and, without asking
Mr.Jens Neufeldt Director Sales Asia
TS RA MLI 1 visited Pakistan
recently. During his stay in Karachi
he visited Siemens Industrial
Complex accompanied by Mr. Kazi
Fahim and Mr.Zia Zuberi. He toured
the various factories and
demonstrated deep interest in the
manufacturing processes and how
railway signaling could benefit from
already available resources in
Pakistan. A lunch was later hosted
in his honor and mementos
presented by Mr.Zia Zuberi and
Mr.Kazi Fahim to mark his visit to
Pakistan.
for permission, took the sign and
rewrote it. He returned the sign
to the blind man and left.
That afternoon the publicist
returned to the blind man and
noticed that his hat was full of
bills and coins.
The blind man recognized his
footsteps and asked if it was he
who had rewritten his sign and
wanted to know what he had
Mr.Jean Neufeldt at motors factory
Mr.Jean Neufeldt at switchboards factory
written on it.
The publicist responded: "Nothing
that was not true. I just wrote the
message a little differently." He
smiled and went on his way.
The new sign read: "Today is
Spring and I cannot see it."
Sometimes we need to change
our strategy - if we always do
what we've always done, we'll
always get what we always got.
AN EXCITING TRIP OF PTD EMPLOYEES TO KALAR KAHAR
Alexander the Great came to India
sometime in 326 BC. He moved from
Taxila of Raja Ambhi, whom he subdued
without fight, to Kalar Kahar via Gali Jagir.
From there he moved over the Salt
Range, turning left, along the western
bank of River Jhelum, which he called
Hydaspes. He encamped in area of
present village Darapur. Opposite him
on the other bank was a mighty strong
ruler Raja Porus, a Pramar Rajput. They
fought Alexander’s biggest Indian battle
which Alexander won, achieving a
masterly surprise against the valiant
Rajput.
OF TOWN
OFFICE LOBBY
Inauguration of town office
lobby was held recently. The
lobby tastefully decorated by
shared services presents
attractive and welcoming look
for the visitors. Apart from the
pictures of awards there is the
famous quote from Dr.Kleinfeld
“ Nobody can be perfect but
a team can be” . This is
depicted on a background of the
Pyramids the most perfect example of
team work that produced one of the eight
wonders of the world. A logo from the
Annual Conference adores the centre
of the wall and proclaims “ Fit4more
powered by top+”.
The Managing director speaking on
the occasion congratulated Major
we must maintain high standards in
all our endeavors. He said creating a
pleasant and attractive working
‘LOCKAT’ grown in salt range.
Their bush country has been
producing pure honey which is
rare. We may note here that in
early days, some Yogies and men
who indulged in medicine
practice, had established a centre
at ‘Tilla’ called Tilla Jogi, because
of special growth of useful herbs
and plants. so the honey made
by the hardworking ‘bees’ had
such qualities. Another sweet preparation,
a gift from king Shershah Suri (Farid
Khan), continues at Rohtas, his
magnificent Fort. It is called ‘Amrassa’.
This sweet is a roasted preparation of
rice flour, in pure milk ghee and is usually
in small pieces/candies. It is sweet
enough only for the taste and is hardly a
bar even for diabetics. It is long lasting
and its packs make fine gifts.
springs and rains is as old as our
historical knowledge. Though not a very
large lake it provides water facility and
greenery to the area. Besides, there
are Siberian migratory ducks (mostly
mallard) which leave Siberia because
of heavy snows and cold. At times some
stray groups of ‘cranes’, who usually
stage in waters of Bannu, may also visit
Kalar Kahar. These birds have long
flights and they move down to areas
as far as Bengal, dropping at
rivers and various dam sites
en route. They go back as
soon as the season changes.
Also at Kalar Kahar, we have
fruit orchards and quite a few
‘rest houses’ including one
from PTDC and there are
many sportsmen and tourists
attracted to the area.
No wonder our PTD
employees arranged a one
day tour to this historically
vibrant and esthetically
pleasant area of Kalar Kahar
to explore the natural beauty.
The tour started early in the morning
from office. All members fully enjoyed
the sights and scenes on the way on
the motorway and enjoyed
refreshments at the rest areas. After
reaching at Kalar Kahar, the members
played cricket matches and at the end
they enjoyed a delicious lunch.
Siemens has remained and strives to be
always a step ahead of its competition
in adapting the latest technologies in
order to cater for the increasing
technological requirements of the country.
In recent days, WiMAX has become the
keyword for any telecomm related
business, Siemens realizing the potential
of this technology has been working to
provide a better solution for it. It is already
being predicted that the impact of WiMAX
would be big so first let’s try to understand
this technology. What it is and how it will
affect our everyday life.
WiMAX is a standards-based technology
for providing high-speed, last-mile
broadband wireless connectivity to homes
and businesses. Termed as “WiFi on
Steroids”, WiMAX would enable even
more millions to access the wirelessly,
cheaply and easily, Tests say that
WiMAX wireless coverage will be
measured in square kilometers/miles.
Base stations (similar to the cell-phone
architecture) will eventually cover an
entire metropolitan area, making it a
Wireless-MAN therefore allowing true
wireless mobility within it.
“WiMAX is here to stay” this is what
telecom industry experts are saying
about this new technology in an age
where simply, anything wireless goes.
Reasons for the success of WiMAX
can be itemized as below:
1. WiMAX has the potential to do to
broadband Internet access what cell
phones have done to phone access. In
the same way that many people have
given up their "land lines" in favor of cell
phones, WiMAX could replace cable and
DSL services, providing universal Internet
“
Siemens with its strong presence,
highly decorated portfolio and
qualified technical staff is ready for
WiMAX’s promotion, sales and after
sales support. With the headquarters
in Milan and Germany also available
for technical assistance, backed by
an R&D department that is renowned
for the quality of its products,
Siemens is all set to contribute in
promoting WiMAX in Pakistan.
access just about anywhere you go.
2. WiMAX will also be as painless as
WiFi, turning on your computer will
automatically connect you to the closest
available WiMAX antenna.
3. Service providers are opting for
WiMAX to compete with the circuit
switched telephone services by providing
VoIP services for their customers. This
would provide an alternate low cost
PROMOTING WIMAX IN PAKISTAN
“
solution to voice calls especially
international voice calls.
Today, WiMAX remains arguably the most
highly touted emerging wireless
broadband technology. A research firm
says revenue from WiMAX equipment
sales are off to a good start, with a nearly
eight-fold increase expected this year.
According to Infonetics, which studied
the worldwide WiMAX market, equipment
revenue in 2004 totaled $16.4 million,
and is expected to increase to $124.5
million in 2005. According to Trade Group
the WiMAX market is will be worth $ 29.3
billion by the year 2008.
With such an incentive, Service Providers
are already cueing to embrace the first
release of this technology in order to
achieve market shares and enjoy for the
following years the tremendous
advantage of being the frontrunner.
By sending obsolete proprietary
standards, prices will become accessible
for a greater part of the population. This
will create a mass demand where
customer flexibility will be guaranteed by
purchasing products labeled “WiMAX
Certified”
Siemens Mobile has strategically opted
for nothing less than the full compliance
to IEEE standards as well as full
adherence to Forum guidelines. As
evidence of this decision, Siemens
products are in the first batch of vendors
participating tests and the executive
management openly declares the intention
of maintaining this technological edge in
the future evolution.
Siemens has set the pace for this
emerging market and recently succeeded
in completing the first live data transfer
with SkyMAX (Siemens solution to
WiMAX), a new end-to-end WiMAX
solution based on the IEEE 802.16-2004
standard, in its test lab in Milan, Italy.
During the live link between a modem
and a base station in the 3.5 GHz
frequency spectrum, data was transmitted
“
The Scope for WiMAX is quite
promising here in Pakistan, as several
operators are showing their interest
in implementing this technology” says
a senior official at Siemens. “The
WiMAX Forum's certification program
has launched, and the first fully
compliant “WiMAX Certified”
labeled gear will ship shortly.
“
at a top speed of up to 12 megabits per
second in 3.5 MHz bandwidth.
Transmission rates as high as this had
only previously been achieved with early
proprietary systems. Siemens will
therefore be one of the world's
first companies to offer standardcompliant
WiMAX radio networks,
including end devices, to fixed
and mobile network operators.
SkyMAX modems use Intel’s
PRO/Wireless 5116 chip, the first
on-chip system for WiMAX that
is based on the IEEE 802.16-2004
standard.
The connection between the
SkyMAX base stations and a
number of modems was tested in
a non-line-of-sight setup. The
results demonstrated that
SkyMAX is able to deliver services
such as Web browsing, video
streaming, VoIP and file transfers
with a guaranteed level of quality
even when the radio link between sender
and receiver includes obstacles like trees
or buildings.
More recently Siemens Communications
and the government-owned
telecommunications operator BEST in
Belarus have signed a memorandum of
understanding for the delivery of the
WiMAX solution.
“The Scope for WiMAX is quite promising
here in Pakistan, as several operators are
showing their interest in implementing this
technology” says a senior official at
Siemens. “The WiMAX
Forum'sÊcertification program has
launched, and the first fully compliant
“WiMAX Certified” labeled gear will ship
shortly”.
Siemens with its strong presence, highly
decorated portfolio and qualified technical
staff is ready for WiMAX’s promotion,
sales and after sales support. With the
headquarters in Milan and Germany also
available for technical assistance, backed
by an R&D department that is renowned
for the quality of its products, Siemens
is all set to contribute in promoting WiMAX
in Pakistan.
HOT FROM SIEMENS
PRESS WORLD WIDE
Siemens and the BHEL of India to Cooperate in Advanced Power Plant Technology
The Siemens Power Generation Group (PG) and the Indian firm Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL) of New Delhi signed a
memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Erlangen on cooperation in the field of advanced power plant technology for clean
conversion of coal to electricity. The agreement makes provision for BHEL and Siemens to jointly offer and execute power plant
projects in India that involve so-called supercritical steam conditions.
"Power plants based on this advanced technology are a key step in the direction of clean conversion of coal to electricity," said
Klaus Voges, group president of Siemens Power Generation. Supercritical steam conditions – at a steam temperature just below
600 degree celsius and a high pressure of approx. 250 bar - enable extremely high plant efficiencies.
Siemens receives new U.S. orders for 70 wind turbines for Texas
Siemens Power Generation's (PG) wind power division has received an order for 161 megawatts (MW) of wind turbines for the
Wildorado Wind RanchTM, which will be located near Amarillo, Texas. These turbines have the potential to meet the electricity
demand of more than 50,000 households. The Siemens scope of supply consists of 70 2.3 MW MK II turbines, including towers
and transportation to the site, installation, startup and commissioning, and a five year service and maintenance agreement. Siemens
Power Generation is demonstrating a strong growth in the wind energy business. Last year, the company almost doubled its
production capacities for wind turbines. In 2005 Siemens PG signed a contract for one of the largest wind orders in the world. For
Florida Power and Light Energy, LLC, the company erects wind farms with a total installed capacity of 600 MW at various U.S.
sites.
Advanced building climate control technology cuts energy consumption by up to 50 percent – New
software calculates amortization
Advanced electronic control systems can reduce the amount of energy con¬sumed by a building's heating, ventilation and air
conditioning (HVAC) systems by up to half. New software from Siemens shows that such a system can pay off after only a few
months. New SED2 EasySave software analyzes the configuration, performance and energy consumption of a conventionally
controlled system and compares it with the accumu¬lated investment costs of an electronic solution. The result shows building
owners, facility managers, planning and engineering offices as well as production machinery operators how they can save on
operating costs and enables them to determine how long after installing the electronic system (also available from Siemens) it
will take for the investment to have paid for itself.
Peer-to-peer technology for IP communications in businesses
CeBIT 2006 saw the unveiling of Siemens' HiPath BizIP, offering innovative peer-to-peer technology for voice communications in
the business environment. Small companies in particular will benefit from the quick and easy access to IP communications that it
provides: up to 16 BizIP-410 telephones can be connected directly to the corporate LAN and allow voice communication over the
data network. With this innovative communications architecture, a conventional PBX for calls to the public network is no longer
necessary.
HiPath BizIP shifts the switching intelligence that used to be concentrated in the PBX to the desktop sets themselves. This means
that these phones can be connected directly to the existing LAN infrastructure and eliminate the need for a separate PBX. The
phones locate each other and configure themselves via the integrated software and are instantly ready to use. The system is easily
scalable from two to 16 terminals. Each phone has an integrated answering machine and supports all the usual enhanced features
such as caller lists, group calls, call diversion, three-way conferences, and swapping between calls.
GLOBAL NETWORK OF INNOVATION
MOST MODERN POLICE HEADQUARTER
One of the most modern police headquarters in the world will be opened in the
emirate of Dubai later this year. Siemens equipped the newly erected building in
the heart of the city with communications technology, IT infrastructure, software
and security technology. Thanks to a high-tech emergency call system, police, the
fire department and ambulance services will be able to react more quickly and
collaborate more effectively
HiPath BizIP EARNS SIEMENS THE “BEST OF CEBIT AWARD”
A peer-to-peer-based solution provides smaller, technically oriented companies with
quick access to IP communication: HiPath BizIP shifts the switching intelligence, which
is traditionally concentrated in the telephone system, to the desk sets. Up to 16 BizIP
410 telephones can be connected directly to the corporate LAN. With their integrated
software, the telephones find each other and configure themselves, making them
immediately operational. The system is easy to install and can be expanded as needed.
At this year's CeBIT, HiPath BizIP earned Siemens the “Best of CeBIT Award” presented
by the trade magazine TeleTalk.
Washing Machine with Automatic Program Selection
Siemens has developed a washing machine that automatically selects the right program
for every type of laundry, a feature that reduces water consumption. The appliance —
“automaticWascher” — is equipped with smart sensors that recognize how much laundry
is in the drum, what kind of textiles the laundry load comprises, and if it is heavily or
lightly soiled. Users only have to choose one of two program settings: hot and colored
wash, or easy-to-clean fabrics. The machine takes care of the rest.
Gigaset Home Control
The Gigaset telephone as control center for the intelligent home: The Gigaset Home
Control is a simple and cost-effective system for automatically controlling all electronic
elements in the home. For example, you can use it to lower the blinds, to dim the lights
or to turn the lights off completely. The system can be easily controlled with the Gigaset
mobile handset.
Image-processing sensor inspects colored objects at a high rate
of speed
Siemens A&D has developed an image-processing system for automatic inspection
of colored objects. At a rate of 30 test operations per second, the compact Simatic
MV220 color-surface sensor is very fast. The robust plastic/metallic housing in IP65
is suitable for use directly on the machine in rough industrial environments. The
system is used primarily in production engineering and in applications in the
packaging and food & beverage industries.
BIRD FLU
Bird Flu is an infection of birds caused
by Influenza virus specific to birds.
Recently a new strain of this virus has
appeared that is very lethal to birds
when they get infected. Unfortunately
this new strain has been gradually
spreading across the world. It started
from China and then involved Far
Eastern Countries before recently hitting
Europe. Fortunately this virus has not
yet learnt mechanics of human to human
transmission and the human cases that
have occurred so far have been due to
direct transmission form infected birds
through close handling. However, there
is a great risk of a strain developing that
might be able to transmit from humans
to humans and, God forbid, should this
happen than this will be the start of Flu
Pandemic that is feared to cause
millions of deaths globally.
Mechanism of Influenza spread:
Influenza viruses are highly contagious.
They are transmitted from person to
person mainly through droplet infection.
Coughing, sneezing and speaking
releases viruses which are then inhaled
by other people in close contact. This
is why the risk of infection is particularly
high where large numbers of people
congregate in confined spaces, e.g. in
buses, trains, schools and nurseries,
elevators.
Even before the first symptoms appear
in someone who is infected, which
usually happens 1 to 3 days after
infection, the viruses can be transmitted
to other people by coughing or sneezing.
The risk of infection remains for 5 to 7
days after onset of the illness. So a
period of 7 to 10 days is very infective
to others.
Bird Flu Transmission to Humans:
The pattern of human transmission
remains mysterious. Young children
seem especially vulnerable to the virus,
although some experts note that children
are more likely to have contact with sick
birds or to play on ground contaminated
with droppings. What's more, people of
all ages have contracted and died of
bird flu. At this point, too few people
have been infected to know all the
Advice for Travelers:
· There are no travel restrictions in
force at present on account of bird flu
or an influenza pandemic.
· If you develop a fever and flu-like
symptoms within one to two weeks of
returning from a business trip to an
area infected with bird flu and if you
had any form of direct contact with
poultry, you should go to see the
company doctor or your own doctor,
after telephoning first. You should notify
the company doctor in any case.
· When in infected areas, avoid all
contact with live birds.
· Keep away from poultry markets.
· Eat only poultry that has been
thoroughly cooked (no pink meat) and
eggs/egg products that have been
thoroughly cooked (do not eat fried
eggs, soft boiled eggs or desserts
containing raw egg).
· The risk of bird flu being passed from
animals to humans is very low and
virtually only exists where there is
intensive contact with diseased poultry.
Transmission from human to human is
only described in isolated cases
(intensive contact when nursing
someone with the disease).
possible risk factors for bird flu.
What should we do to prevent Bird Flu:
present to share the great milestone
achieved by Mr. Akhtar Ul Islam. Gifts were
Colleagues.
Mr. Akhtar Ul Islam with Mr. Axel Fisher, Mr. Bernd Wernich, Mr. Adil Imran,
Mr. Mansoor Farooqui and other colleagues.
Good thing is that
the virus is still not
able to pass from
humans to humans
and let’s hope that
by the time it
ultimately develops
this ability the
scientists would
develop effective
treatment for the
dreaded disease
but currently they
are running short
of time. The
governments
By
Dr. Kamran K Faruqi.
Chief Medical Officer
take precautionary measures by culling
all poultry in the affected and
neighboring areas and ordering
quarantine of the areas. At the individual
level there are some measures that we
can adopt to decrease the risk of spread
of infection:
· Avoid crowded places
· Use a paper tissue to cover your mouth
and nose when coughing or sneezing.
Dispose of tissues in the rubbish bin,
not the wastepaper basket. Then
wash/disinfect your hands.
· Also wash your hands thoroughly after
contact with other people.
· If you suddenly develop flu-like
symptoms (aching limbs, severe
malaise, cough, fever) while at work,
report to the Company Medical Service
(after telephoning first).
Additional measures to prevent Bird Flu
would also include eating only poultry
that has been thoroughly cooked (no
pink meat or barbecue) and eggs/egg
products that have been thoroughly
cooked (do not eat fried eggs, soft boiled
eggs or desserts containing raw egg).
In this regard it is important to tell your
house wives or servants to handle raw
chicken and eggs carefully, wash these
properly before cooking and after
washing these wash their hands well.

Managing Time
by: Sharjeel Jawaid
BU TD
On our
journey to
h u m a n
excellence
we should
gather and
practice the
i n p u t s
which drive
s e l f
improvement and leads to
success. One of the basic
attributes of successful
individuals is effective
management of time.
Time is a resource which is often
ignored. Like the many bounties
of nature it comes free. This may
be a reason that its importance
is not appreciated. Every living
being on this planet receives 24
hours each day. It is up to the
individual to make the best use
of these hours.
Most unfortunately, time
management in our culture has a
very low priority. Our social
gatherings are highly
representative of the value we
attach to time. Not only that we
do not keep our schedule, we also
do not care for others.
Do’s
Do’s & Don’ts
Loss/theft of a movable device
(e.g. Notebooks, PDAs, USB
sticks etc.) must be
immediately reported to the
locally responsible contact
person for information security
Store your notebook in a
lockable and safe place while
it is not being used.
Use encryption to protect
against data theft and
manipulation.
Many books and articles are
available on suggestions for
managing time. Some tips are
given below.
1. Organize yourself
l Keep an appointment calendar
l Keep a task list
l Know where your papers are
l Keep a clutter free desk
2. Plan your day in advance.
Before leaving for the day review
your tasks for next working day.
Apply the same for the week as
well
3. Keep identifying your
“important tasks”. Important
becomes urgent when not
assigned the right priority.
4. Plan your day with 3 major
slots of not more than 90 minutes
each for important tasks.
5. Keep 30 minute slots for other
tasks / one timers e.g. follow ups,
Laptop security
The data stored on the movable
device must be backed up at
regular intervals, preferably on
weekly basis.
Always keep your systems
updated with a virus scanner
software for the device, it must
be installed, configured, and
must always remain activated.
Don’ts
Do not install software from
untrustworthy source (e.g.
internet, shareware, etc) and
never click YES when ask for
download.
Never leave your notebook
unattended during business
travel (e.g. at airport lounge,
customer meeting room, hotel
room).
Don’t put your notebook in an
unaccompanied luggage (e.g.
when traveling by bus or plane).
The user must not modify the
security settings of the device
Be aware. Be secure.
phone calls etc
6. Avoid distractions, specially
when working on important tasks.
Common examples are phones
and unwanted visitors.
7. Keep conversations brief on
phone. It should be used for
exchange of information, fixing
appointments and finding status
etc. Never use the phone for
giving explanations or clearing
misunderstandings. These
matters are better resolved with
face to face discussions.
8. Meetings should be
l Restricted to a maximum of 90
minutes.
l Should have an agenda
circulated to participants in
advance.
l Minutes must be recorded with
task responsibilities and
deadlines.
9. Keep a record of how your
time is spent.
10. Start your day early. You
will be surprised how much
can be achieve in first 2 hours.
11. Treat time as if it is hard
39 40
(except change of passwords).
Most of the above points come
from Peter F. Drucker who died
recently at the age of 95. Mr
Drucker was an original thinker
and has left more than two dozen
books on economics,
management and fiction. He was
never employed by a corporation,
but the corporate chiefs of the
world kept their ears tuned to
him. He gave the concept of
“Knowledge Worker” some forty
years ago.
Recommended
reading from his
works is “The
Effective Executive”
which was initially
published in mid
sixties but is
regarded as one the
best books on
management today.
