estnews 23Amara Raja Batteries to entersolar and motive power marketsIndian Amara RajaBatteries (Amara) is toexpand into the solarand motive power marketsand plans to open a secondmanufacturing plant inChitoor, India.Amara aims to target thesolar storage market with itslead‐acid batteries. Its motivepower batteries are aimedto be supplied to a widevariety of electric poweredtransportation systems,including the railway market.The battery manufacturerhas commissioned anadditional manufacturingplant in January in Chitoor,India and is to open anotherbattery factory in the sameregion in December thisyear in order to increase itsexports.Amara is currentlysupplying lead‐acidbatteries to the industrialand automotive market.Amara’s focus has been onIndian Ocean rim countries,especially in the Africancontinent. Its batteries arenow marketed in Nigeria,Uganda, Tanzania and Egypt.“We will also continue toexplore the possibilities forforging strategic alliancesin the industrial batteriesbusiness and cater todynamic technology changesin the storage power sectorglobally,” said Jaydev Galla,managing director at Amara.In 2013, Amara and ExideIndustries have dominatedthe Indian lead‐acid batterymarket with a 90% marketshare.bestmagazine // Autumn 2014
